"Can the Bears get back into the 2nd Round of 2010 NFL Draft?"
We all KNOW that the Bears need to answer the FS position in this year's draft. Curently, two of the better FS are still on the board in Nate Allen and Taylor Mays. Either one of them I wouldn't "toot my nose" in the air about having on my football team. Neither of them will be on the board at the #75 pick, so the Bears will have to do something in order to get one of these sure-fire safeties.
Let's look at this in a couple different pieces, Bears fans...
... Who do the Bears have on roster that is expendable so that they can move up into the 2nd round?
>>> Greg Olsen, TE-- He doesn't fit well into a Mike Martz system. Although the Bears have said that they can make him fit and there is opportunity for him in the system, the track record of a tight end in a Martz system has been one of blocking and low receptions for even the most talented TE.
>>> Hunter Hillenmeyer, LB-- With the signing of Jamar Williams, Nick Roach and Pisa Tinamosoa, there just isn't a need for Hunter Hillenmeyer in Chicago any longer. The thing is, he really isn't attractive enough to get you back ino the 2nd round. Perhaps the 3rd or 4th.
>>> Charles Tillman, CB-- Charles Tillman has been taking it easy this offseason and has said he wants to go light in camps this year because he wants to preserve the wear and tear on his body this season. Corey Graham has been filling in for Tillman's absence and many scouts and reports have said that they have been impressed with Graham's tackling ability. And isn't that what we require out of the CB in C2? Tillman's coverage ability has never been spectacular; decent at times at best. Tillman refuses to move to safety and I think with his shoulders becoming more of a liability, coaches might be cooling down on the TIllman love fest.
That being said...
... Out of those players, who has a need for one of those players in the top-half of the 2nd round?
Right away the team that sticks out to me is the New England Patriots who hold THREE picks in the second round (44, 47, and 53).
The Patriots are in the market for a tight end and the Bears hold a former first round draft pick in Greg Olsen, who has speed and play-making ability, but has underachieved thus far in his career. However, there is still a huge amount of potential there and in the right system...
... He could blossom.
With three picks, the Patriots could be willing to move one and add a third in its place for a Greg Olsen.
What the Bears have to be aware of is that the Vikings, Broncos, and Eagles are all still in the hunt for a FS (Vikes more of a SS; Mays). Sergio Kindle is still on the board, along with Jimmy Clausen which makes an intriguing position for the Vikings on what to do with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round. Personally, I think they are content with Tarvaris Jackson and their LB unit. I do think Brett Favre will be back for one more season. That makes one of two top safties fair game for the Vikes, right?
The Bears have to wait to see what the Vikings do with their pick, then wait til teh ever "mysterious" Al Davis selects with the 7th pick in the 2nd round and possibly look to see if the patriots are willing to move their 44th pick.
Thoughts?

Tillman must stay.
I just don’t see how you could trade the best CB on the team when it’s not really a position of strength. I like what I’ve seen from Graham but it’s not enough to jettison Tillman. I’ll never forget that play he made against Moss a few years back in the end zone.
LB, on the other hand, is definitely deep. But I don’t think Hunter’s trade value is as high as Williams or Roach.
Olsen I could see moving. Either for a draft pick, or possibly in a deal to get Atogwe. Bradford’s gonna need someone to throw to.
I think that the Pats signed Algie Crumpler? So I don’t know if they’d be looking to trade one of those second round picks for another TE.
Agree about Tillman and HH
Williams has more trade value than Hunter at this point. I definitely would rather keep Roach over JW. Olsen should not be traded for any reason at all. If Martz can’t figure out a way to utilize Olsen’s abilities as a pass-catcher and mismatch for LB’s and Safeties, then it shows exactly why he’s jumped from team to team the last few years and was out of a job last year.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
I could kind of see the Olsen to Stl. move though
Either for Atogwe or for their 2nd round pick and our 3rd. As much as I like Olsen, you’d be getting a value player for a value player.

Tillman is the "tallest midget in the Bears secondary"
No offense to Tillman if he is reading these boards. Stand up guy and has been a solid player for this team, but he has never been much of a cover corner. Which is really not necessary in a C2, but it certainly is not something you just over look as more of the teams in the NFC North are converting to Spread formations that call for more coverage and instincts along the edges.
You’ll never forget the play against Moss, but I’ll never forget the gaem against the Falcons two years ago when the Falcons first series was 8-10 consecutive throws, 5-7 yards off the line of scrimmage, to Roddy White for what appeared to be an unstoppable drive to the endzone. It garnered a FG, but it certainly set the tone for the day. Tillman later left the game with a bruisted shoulder.
I just think Tillman is getting a bit banged up at this stage in his career and shouldn’t be seen as “untouchable” on a team that has secondary issues.

Supposing there was a market for Tillman...
… do you really trade him for an unknown?
by oripunk3485 on Apr 23, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Good question.
Corey Graham (who would replace Tillman) is unproven, but I don’t think the Bears would consider him an unknown in the sense of a rookie coming into the league. he’s been working hard in camps and many Chicago reporters have said they are impressed with his growth. Lovie has said the same thing.
Nate Allen/Taylor Mays [being an unknown]?
Well, ask yourself this…
… Are you comfortable starting week 1 with Danieal Manning and Craig Stelz in your two safety positions?
If you are, then this becomes a moot point.
If not, then how can anyone “turn their nose up” at two guys who have the scouts buzzing the way they have this offseason. Mays completely OBLITERATED the combine and Nate Allen has impressed every head coach in the league who has watched him workout.

The Only Question About Tillman.
Is his ability to stay healthy throughout the season. However, I think trading Tillman and replacing him with Corey Graham woould prove to be a foolish move. I think ideally we would want to trade from a position we have depth at. Not a position we are thin at.
Manning, yes, not entirely but enough.
Steltz, no. Unless I completely misread him last year. But I still wouldn’t trade Tillman… Bowman has had injury issues, so if he goes down who steps in opposite Graham? I haven’t seen D.J. Moore in action… ditto for Jennings.
???
He is a pretty decent corner not top 10 or anything but gets the job done. CB is already a need trading your best one doesnt help the cause. Sit pat at 75 there will be a decent safety or guard available

i like the idea
the olsen for atogwe deal would be great for both units, i wouldnt give our 3rd pick with it though maybe our 4th, we need to keep the 3rd we can still get major wright at that spot

If we got Atogwe
Why would we draft Major Wright in the third?
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
I agree if we are going to take a SS
let’s make No it all happy and take Kam Chancellor(i think i may have spelled his name wrong).
Regarding Olsen
I think we have enough depth at the Tight End Position to move him. It would make perfect sense to move Olsen to move up and address our need at the Safety position. Of course we don’t see a lot of moves that make sense with this team.
TRUE
not much has made sense with this team in the last couple years

I was thinking about the same thing earlier
and honestly i wouldn’t mind including next years 2nd to get up into this year’s 2nd. I f we can get up and snag Taylor Mays i would be happy. He has some serious potential and if you look back to 2008 he is an outstanding player. I think he was just pressing and trying to do to much this year. Also if we got Taylor Mays i would definitely “Toot my nose”.
Olsen and a third for the 33rd, Atogwe and a huge contract extension?
I dunno, Bears loyal…
… Doesn’t seem the best “business move” when if you wait 10 picks later you can get either Nate Allen or Taylor Mays. Dallas, Philly, and Minnesota are the only two teams drafting BEFORE the Patriots and need a FS. Minnesota is considering moving back and are speculating if Jimmy Clausen is an option. Dallas still needs a LT and they are depleting pretty rapidly.
That leaves Philly before the 44th pick.
You trade a player who has talent, but doesn’t fit into your system for a team who has a need and will be willing to give us the pick we need to get the player we NEED and maybe a late-draft pick (6th or 7th).
We can’t FIRE Martz at this point, because we have commited to him and, frankly…
… Had a hard time fielding a OC to begin with.
Atogwe is looking for an extension taht will pay him 4-6 million a year. He has had a few injuries and one specifically to the tools of his position— his shoulders.
I just don’t like the Atogwe "love fest. I think Nate Allen brings you great value for pieces that you weren’t going to get much out of in 2010 anyway (i.e.— Olsen and 75 pick)
Semper Fi
Honestly I'd rather have Allen at this point
He might cost a little more to get but he’s six years younger than Atogwe. The Bears on the other hand would probably rather have Atogwe b/c he’s experienced not only as a NFL vet but also in the Cover 2. Don’t forget, JA and Lovie are in “win now” mode.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!

Can they afford him though?
I just don’t see Virginia McCaskey pony’ing up another big contract for a guy who is 29 years old and a coaching staff that is on its way out the door.
I certainly think Atogwe is still an option, but I think his price is too much for the same reason logic you’re expressing about a younger Nate Allen.

Yes But.............
Atogwe is a St. Louis Ram. And we all know of the love affair displayed by Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo for former Rams players.
True, but...
… Atogwe is not a Lovie Smith draft pick. He debuted in 2005. Lovie was coaching the Bears in 2005.

I think the vikings are going to take
Mays or Allen.
by Jhitt81 on Apr 23, 2010 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I agree!
If not, then the Eagle will grab one.
It all depends on what direction the Vikings take with their pick. If they choose Mays or Allen, then Eagels wll scoop up the other. If not, I think one will be availabe at the 44th pick.

NFL.com
Has put together a 2nd round mock draft. They have Mays going 37th(530 pts.) overall to the Eagles, Allen 49th(410 pts.) to the 49ers (ironic?), and Burnett 56th(340 pts.) to the Pack.
Considering our first pick is 75th(215 pts.), I could see it as very possible to move up by trading our 3rd this year and 2nd next year to at least get ahed of SF. I think Allen can be that good and a leader for our defense for years to come. If JA can somehow pull this off I’ll be ecstatic to say the least.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!

I Disagree With NFL.com
I am confident the Eagles will selct either Jimmy Clausen or Colt McCoy with the 37th pick. That still does little to help out the Bears cause. We have about 2 or 3 more hours to swing a deal.

I'm not sure that JA has permission to trade any of next year's picks.
I think he’s reached his credit limit on mortgaging the Bear’s future.
