2010 Chicago Bears/ NFL Draft (Rounds 6 and 7 Open Thread)
We now head into the last two rounds of the NFL Draft... here are the Bears picks so far:
3rd Round: Major Wright, FS, Florida
4th Round: Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
5th Round: Joshua Moore, DB, Kansas St.
6th Round: Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan (quick analysis after the jump)
7th Round: J'Marcus Webb, OT, West Texas A&M
Stay tuned for continuing action!
Dan LeFevour, from NFL.com:
LeFevour is a four-year starter at a mid level college football program that flashes a lot of what teams are looking for but will need to develop several parts of his game if he wants to play at the next level. He does not take many snaps from under center and will need to work on dropping to the pocket and reading the coverage as he sets up. He has a decent arm but the ball will flutter, at times, when trying to thread the needle on some downfield throws. When he has time and room to step into his throws he can get some zip on the short to intermediate outs.

What’s everyone think about Bears getting Faneca?
"I was interviewing George Halas and I asked him who is the greatest running back you ever saw. And he said, 'That would be Red Grange.' And I asked him if Grange was playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain. And he said, 'About 750, maybe 800 yards.' And I said, 'Well, 800 yards is just okay.' He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old.' - Chris Berman

Could work out 1 of 2 ways
Like Ruben Brown or like Pace as Biggs pointed out.

conflicted
on one hand I think he can be an upgrade run blocking wise….but then he has given up a lot of sacks for an OG according to some….

OL
Looking at the projects that are left, I wouldn’t mind Sam Young OT from Notre Dame or Selvish Capers OT.

Sorry.....
but why the hostility? I was just trying to offer up where he ended up,. which disappointed me, as I wanted Olsen, and the Bears not only ignored him with the pick you were discussing, but with the following pick as well. Where was this going, 2 days later? Did I say something offensive? Or did you over-react when I simply offered up information that was neither hostile, nor contradictory? Seriously……….what the hell?

1.At the very least it will provide real competition at the FS spot.
2.He has things you can’t teach, like speed and instincts.

Rolle is smart enough to know
that he can set himself up for life and whatever future he wants with a decade in the NFL. He also says the only thing he wants to do right now is play football. So teams are passing on him because he has other interests? I say good, better value for us.
Rolle wants a long NFL career first, because he is smart
enough to realize that you can make lots of money as a young man, and that playing pro football isn’t a lifetime career, but is a chance of a lifetime.
I thought Afalava really dropped off the same way Payne did. Rolle was an All-American and his only weakness is that he is super smart!
Well I guess we have gotten 3 DB's so far
but I really wanted him from the start of this draft. Plus all the Rolle’s playing in the NFL are legit. We missed out on Antrelle so lets get Myron!

Faneca
I am intrigued by Faneca. He can’t pass block well but two years ago Hutchinson’s pass protection stats were terrible and Pace only allowed two sacks. The fact that he is still a pretty good run blocker may make the pickup a good one. If Forte and Taylor can run the ball Cutler’s stats should improve.
One of these years I would like to see more than one lineman taken in a draft by J/A.
yu also have to remember
Faneca was blocking for Sanchez. A rookie QB who held the ball way too long.
The whole Jets line’s stats were screwed because of Sanchez

earl thomas was rating 2nd best safety behind Berry. I would have liked Mays as well. Did you here how pissed Taylor Mays is that his old coach Pete Carroll didn’t pick him in seattle. He was a top 15 pick and carroll convinced him to stay then he just 30 picks and got passed on by his head coach and lost millions. I would be mad too if i was mays.

Lefevour...Great pick
Even if it is not a need we can do what the Packers used to do with Favre’s backups…develop them and then trade them for much higher picks. They did with Matt Hasselback and Aaron Brooks. I think great pick that might work out wonderfully later.
Yes, because we’re so good at developing young QBs.

Agreed. We only have one spot on the line locked up for the next 3-4 years and that is LT
Kruetz and Brown are near the end. We have no confidence in who will be RT or LG or if the guy that we put there will be worth it. Develop the future now!!

I love the pick. It's not like we have a 3rd QB anyway
It’s the 6th freaking round. Why not take another QB to groom for trade bait later of to play in the future. SF did go and trade for Steve Young while they had Montana. You can NEVER have enough good QBs on your roster
I'd rather have a vet than a prospect brought in. Haney is our prospect. We don't need 2 prospects.

I’m sure when the Pats grabbed Brady after having Bledsoe, they figured it wouldn’t matter. It’s the 6th round. I love the pick

Jerry Angelo's take on why we didn't take anyone on the O=line;
“I really felt that drafting someone on the offensive line would have been a move that would have made too much sense for our team at this point in time. It would have been a good move that I just felt would be out of character for this franchise given its recent history.”

He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old.' - Chris Berman

This is so dumb
We need help on the OLine not a Martz project. Getting a QB we don’t need is about the dumbest thing ever. And this reeks of trouble with Cutler being slighted with the drafting of a young and talented potential starter. Martz clearly wanted his guy and Angelo being dumb as he is got him his guy even though he gave up a kings ransom for his guy in Cutler. So stupid
Kolb
The Eagles took Kevin Kolb in the 2nd round and it took 3 years for him to start. I don’t think cutler is worried because we took a QB in the 6th round.
Yeah but
I highly doubt Martz will even be here in 3 years and Jay will still be under 30 and hopefully have a better team around him. To me this sends the wrong message is all. We got a franchise QB and we don’t need a prospective starter

You guys are really overreacting over a 6th round pick
What probably happened is that the Bears had him high on their board. So high, that by the time the 6th round came around, they just had to take him. I’m not comparing him to Brady but that was the situation in NE. When a guy on your board is that high and he’s ahead of some nobody OG from God knows where, you take the value as opposed to the need. Which is something I liked about the pick.
We're gonna get Faneca
and we have all our picks in next years draft….Getting a veteran is a better move than a 5-7th round project who probably wont even make the team..We can get a beast in the 1st next year if we need an O-lineman
Teammates.....What a unique concept
id be happy with faneca
just scared that money would scare bears away link after breaking the bank on three FA already
We might be able to get Faneca fairly cheap
He is already guaranteed $5 million + from the Jets this year. Maybe we can get him for less than normal.
Yep ppl tend to forget that.
We will probably go O-line, CB, LB then O-line again in the 1st four rounds.
Bosh 2010!!!!!
Scouting report on LeFevour
Accuracy: Runs a spread with a lot of four and five-receiver sets. High completion percentage reflects the offense’s quick, short passes, but generally puts the ball where he wants to when set in the pocket. Good timing with initial receivers on stop routes. Puts the ball to the outside shoulder on sideline patterns and end zone fades. Accuracy drops when on the run, however; usually throws high or wide, even when square to the line. Must improve his ability to hit receivers on the numbers and leading them on crossing routes.
Arm Strength: Lean quarterback with very average arm strength. Floats deep balls down the sideline and over the middle. Steps into most throws but still does not put a lot of zip on passes over 10-12 yards. Deep outs are wobbly, late and inaccurate.
Setup/Release: Sets his feet after receiving the snap and usually throws from a balanced position. Adjusts well to poor snaps in any direction. Will get happy feet if his offensive line is leaky – but is tough enough to stand and deliver in the face of pressure. Resets his feet when possible if on the move within or out of the pocket. Fair quickness on his release. Sometimes tries to unload too soon, getting even less than on the ball than on his normal passes.
Reading Defenses: Throws from the shotgun almost exclusively and typically throws quickly to his primary read, which won’t happen at the next level. Must learn how to read from the line and adjust while dropping back. Looks to sideline for pre-snap adjustments. Looks off the safeties, but not often enough. Will make poor decisions if not going to his first target – throwing late over the middle or forcing a ball into tight coverage.
On the Move: Fair mobility within the pocket, keeps his eyes downfield and will move around to find a passing lane. Accuracy and spiral is lacking when moving to his left, especially when he cannot reset his feet. Shows the awareness to dump off the ball under pressure. Tough former running back with some elusiveness and vision who will get first downs and more if unchecked. Uses his height to lunge for first downs. Puts ball in outside hand. Will tuck and run too quickly at times.
Intangibles: Four-year starter who helped the Chippewas become a bowl-worthy program. Well-respected in the locker room. Academic All-American for Region IV in 2008.

im coming late for the draft party...
But I caught the 6th round pick…and i have to say, after watching the reaction from this young man Dan LeFevour’s family, it brought tears to my eyes. For one, I am really happy for this young man (who I am hearing about for the first time in my life)…what a dream come true to have your hometown team select you as their QB. For two, I am happy because this guy will do everything he has to do to grow and become a QB for the future of this franchise. Kudos on a great selection!

Lovie Smith's reaction to not addressing the offensive line in the 2010 draft:
“Based on the way we played last year I really don’t feel like we need any help on the (offensive) line. Couple that with the fact that there are several key, albeit aging, free agents that we can bring in. I could see us going out and picking up a free agent tackle and attempting to play him at either of our guard positions. I just don’t see the need. Oh, and I hate that Cutler kid…”
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
“Based on the way we played last year I really don’t feel like we need any help on the (offensive) line”
I could actually see him saying that, plus how “excited” he is about what they can do this coming year.

do u guys like LeFevour over Pike?
by NorthWest Connection on Apr 24, 2010 2:02 PM CDT reply actions
I think Pike's arm is more NFL-ready...
…but LeFevour’s athleticism probably makes him a better long-term prospect.
Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.
I think they picked LeFevour because his skill set is what Martz looks for, Pike is slow on his feet.
Also LeFevour grew up a Bears fans, him and Jay can have something to talk about now
Blount at round 7 would be a steal... and he'd also be a good sparring partner for Tommie Harris
Maybe they will implement Tae Kwon Do sessions during OTA’s and training camp
lol
sparring might be putting it lightly

I liked Robert Johnson’s highlights video as well and, I have to say, was a bit surprised by the assessment given on Yahoo’s draft board (take from NFP):
National Football Post: A tall, high-cut safety who can bring the wood when asked to attack downhill. Really struggles when asked to change directions and get back up to speed quickly. Will be a real liability in the pass game.

02/08/2010 – Texas vs. Nation Game Review: West Texas A&M tackle J’Marcus Webb was stout in pass protection and as a run blocker, and even got out in front of screens to dominate defensive backs. Charlie Campbell (Eastern Illinois) stood his ground in pass protection and looked fluid getting out in front of Holliday’s TD run in the third quarter. – Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com
02/04/2010 – Texas vs. the Nation, Wednesday: One of the more intriguing physical specimens on the line in front of Perriloux is another major college transfer, former Texas tackle J’Marcus Webb, who played at West Texas A&M for two years after earning All-American honors at Navarro Junior College. Webb proved Wednesday he has good enough footwork and strength to anchor against the defensive ends in his game, and he has some mobility in the open field. However, scouts watching him on the field were concerned about his willingness to participate in drills and were disappointed in his body language between reps. – Chad Reuter, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com

played in 12 games as a freshman at Texas before transferring to Navarro. It looks like he’s gained a ton of weight. He came out of high school at 260 and his school listed him at 6’8", 325

OL: Ulatoski, Washington, Black, Carter
WR: i hope we go Seyi Ajirotutu. I’ve watched him the last few years in Fresno. He’s the big body guy the bears want and was a stud in college. Could develop into a lot more as he’s pretty fast as well. Denario Alexander wouldn’t be bad either

so...
Does anyone else think we sucked it out this draft? Maybe Angelo knows he is going to get fired and doesn’t care anymore.
Honestly we weren't supposed to do that good
When was the last time that the last team to pick their first player did the best? I am happy that we didn’t trade any future picks away (yet?) Who knows maybe some of these guys will surprise all of us, but I still love the Lefevour pick.
maybe it's just me
But if I traded 2 # 1 draft picks for a QB then having played a year under a suspect line that can’t run block nor give the QB much time to trow i would invest in the O-line before the 7th round. I think Lefevour is a good player too, but I also think we could have gotten him in the 7 or an UFA, no one was going to pick him
by Bears-Bullsfan on Apr 24, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
Look at the Colts. They picked up some decent O-line prospects in the middle rounds – while we were chasing more DEs. Pollian knows that even with Peyton Manning under center, you still keep building your O-line because ultimately if the line fails, then so does your QB, running back, etc…
Well, we desperately needed help at FS and OL…
We got a FS who is, despite some debate as to whether he’s more of a SS, better than anyone we had who could fit that role. Guess we can now officially rule out any bid for Atowge, though personally I would have thought two FSes who can also tackle in the box would be a better fit for this style of defense (small, athletic players) than even one traditional in the box SS (yes, I’m wondering if Atowge and Wright, at FS and SS respectively, would make a good combination).
We got the usual 7th round project for the OL, albeit one whom Tice was said to have liked and would like to work on. I’m as disappointed as anyone else in that we didn’t upgrade the OL… we ranked low in both run- and pass-blocking last season and will also have to face Detroit’s suddenly rather nasty-looking DL in this one.
Disappointed that he went with a QB. The only way I could be any more so is if we’d wasted a pick on a LB as well.

Not bad, JA...but, two questions...
Q#1: ..Assuming there wasn’t a OG on the board that could make our roster, why take a DE one year removed from reconstructive knee surgery (Wootten), instead of a DT (Atkins) that whipped the best OG in the draft like a wet kitten at the Senior Bowl ( Iupati, drafted 17th overall by the ’Niner’s)?? Q#2: ..Lefevour? Actually, I kinda like this kid…but, wouldn’t Alabama C Mike Johnson have looked alot better here? We gotta get younger and stronger on the O-Line — if Cutler goes down, we’re toast, so, if Lefevour can’t challenge Hanie for the #2 QB spot…what’s the point?? Maybe a 1-year deal for Faneca, huh…
