The Chicago Bears Welcome Back Chris Harris?!
Per Brad Biggs' Twitter account (other links coming soon), Chris Harris will re-join the Bears after a three year stint with the Panthers. Has there been a trade involving a veteran linebacker?
More details as they are announced...
UPDATE: Here's a link to Biggs' story on Chicago Breaking Sports
UPDATE 2: Per Zach Zaidman the Panthers get LB Jamar Williams.
UPDATE 3: Per a source close to the situation, Chris Harris will be making an official announcement on his Facebook page.
UPDATE 4: Apparently, the trade is not official yet. Both sides have yet come to agreeable terms. More info to come as I receive it.

I like him as a player
But is another strong safety really needed?

That;s the part the confuses me.

If we can't get O.J this is the next best move..
Adrian Pedestrian!! Now that's funny Mr. Bayless...
How?
They play different positions. I’m excited that we got Harris back(I was sad to see him leave), but a FS he is not.
But a turnover machine he is
Its like having a second Tillman in the secondary
(Asshole Sr) "If you learn one thing here, NEVER pass out in Ohio."
No disagreement here
Just saying that Harris would not be a substitute for OJ.
We drafted Major to be the FS
Now I know we have no idea how he will turn out but the guy has a chance to be pretty. There is alot of talent on this dfense with that said what ss do we have that is better than CH at the moment. None. 1. position upgraded. That is how that is the next best move. Plus they don’t have to dish out another 20 to 30 million dollar contract to get Harris signed like they would with O.J.

And if he ends up pretty, he’ll no doubt get some endorsement deals in Chicago!

Just a cut and paste now that there are two threads
Glad he’s coming back… but…
But the whole thing makes me even more furious at Lovie and Jerry.
This is an admission of failure to trade him in the first place, which caused us to lose games, sign and draft numerous failed replacements, and ultimately missed out on Chris Harris’ career year (he led the NFL in forced fumbles).
Complete egomaniac idiots running this team, who think they are smarter than everyone else.
All that off my chest… glad he’s coming back. And the locker room will be very happy too, especially with Peppers here as well.

A lot more players got burned on that play. Urlacher for one over ran the play, plus the CB on that side.

uh no
Harris had him in the flat and took a bad angle and the urlacher tried to run him down. But I think he is a much better player now vs then. But I wonder why carolina wanted to let him loose. Safeties are a hot commodity.

Depends on who initiated the trade. I’m sure Carolina knew Bears were shopping Williams. Maybe just a little coincidence.

He was traded because Lovie had a man-crush on Adam “The Redskins way over-payed me” Archuletta, and traded for him to start at SS and replace Harris.

He wasn't producing squat when they traded him.
He was servicable. He wasn’t standing out but he wasn’t making mistakes either. The reason Lovie and Co brought in AA was because he was forcing turnovers like a mad man with Lovie the first go around. They thought the system in Washington was the cause for his decline. It wasn’t until he got he they found out it was because he really sucked.

So now we have 8 safeties on the roster; we will only keep 5.
Major Wright
Danieal Manning
Craig Steltz
Al Afalava
Josh Bullocks
Kevin Payne
Chris Harris
Quentin Scott
Q Scott probably gets cut or makes his way onto the practice squad. That leaves 2 more who need to go. The last 3 seasons, the Bears have only kept 5 safeties on the roster. Who’s out?
Maybe with Wright
We can move Manning back to Nickle, where he has at least been ok.
My bets, Payne, Scott and either Bullocks or Afalava
(Asshole Sr) "If you learn one thing here, NEVER pass out in Ohio."
and of those 8
Wright and Bullocks are FS

probably Steltz. Scott on the Practice Squad. I don’t see us cutting Payne or Afalava. Neither one of them is great, but I don’t see how Lovie would think that Bullocks or Steltz is better.
"I want people to fear me"- Derrick Rose.

The difference is that Payne & Afalava are kind of the same guy;
and neither does much on special teams.
Bullocks for all his faults, is a true FS. A backup for sure, and he is better than the other 2 on special teams. I really would like Steltz cut and then Payne & Afalava battle it out for the last spot.

I hope not as I think he did a good job when he started two years ago, but they moved a rookie ahead of him last year, and then traded for someone to put ahead of the rookie. For whatever reason, the Bears have ruled out Payne as a starter and probably even as a backup.
I hope Payne does get the chance to go to a team where he can play more.

8 safeties now, huh.
Well someone’s got to go on the chopping block. Any teams that could use a couple in return for a serviceable G?
Craig Steltz days in ...
…….. Chicago should be numbered . Hes a bad position player with good special teams skills . Bullocks and Manning could also see their time as Bears end . Scott will be either be a practice squad player or on our opening day roster . My guess is practice squad .

I personally
Don’t see Steltz going anywhere. I see Bullocks gettin the ax, and Manning being moved back to corner. Steltz being the backup FS behind Wright and AA being the safety-extaordinare backing up both safety positions.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
Some Bear beat writers
seem to think that if the Bears added another safety after drafting Wright that Payne would be the odd man out and looking at getting cut….They even mentioned that it could happen before training camp…..

I wanted to throw Payne in there
I just think he adds amazing depth if anything were to happen to Harris. I guess Afalava does too, ugh who knows. If the trade goes through, a position of weakness before the draft just turned into one of our strengths in a matter of five days.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
Really? A position of strength?
A bunch of guys we had before a 3rd round draft pick and another SS. Harris is an upgrade but I do not see it as a huge one, he plays out of position and has decent at best speed.
Good to have back yes, but lets not get too far ahead of ourselves
Two starting caliber safeties
One who is a gifted athlete and one who’s a turnover machine > what we had. The amount of experience our depth at the position will have is also a bonus. Strength might be pushing it, but S isn’t the biggest weakness of the D anymore.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
I will agree with that
it is now DT……IMO

I think he has looked his best
In the nickel. His speed is a huge assett there and reminds me of Arenas in Saban’s defense blitzing from the same spot.
Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!
possible outcomes
Afalava – in (youth, can potentially play both FS/SS, produced some last year)
Wright – in (top draftee)
Harris – in (just got him)
Bullocks – out (even w/ 500k guaranteed from the tender, I think they’ll swallow that in favor of younger guys)
Steltz – out (unless he shows he can actually play in the secondary in camp, otherwise there are lots of ST option)
Scott – bubble (pure guess: he makes the roster so long as he works hard on special teams, he looks to be a superior athlete to almost all the other guys)
Manning – bubble (STs works in his favor….candidate for a potential move back to corner. I bet DJ Moore gets axed.)
Payne – bubble (I hate to say it because I like him a lot; will depend on if there are any injuries and how Scott/Manning look in camp. He’s making 550k this year, so he’s a little more expensive that some of the other guys. They may decide they don’t need Manning as a returner and will keep Payne for in-the-box safety depth)
Despite all these options…I’m not super confident yet that the secondary is going to be markedly better next year

From my Liamthers post (in February)...
This could also return the glory back to Chicago’s stable, their defense. Adding in players like Julius Peppers (check), Jon Beason, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Chris Harris (check), Chris Long, James Laurinitis and Louis Delmas with players like Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher, Tommie Harris, Charles Tillman and Al Afalava could be something very, very special.
Two down… Five to go!

Chris Harris has 3 more years left under his current contract. He is due to make a little more than $2 million dollars this season.

Nice
The move was just the latest in a tumultuous offseason long purge at Halas Hall that has created a negative environment in which “everybody is looking out for themselves,” according to the source. Tensions were running so high that senior director of football administration Cliff Stein and scout Jeff Shiver almost came to blows after several heated conversations relating the team’s pursuit of rookie free agents Saturday night, which a separate source downplayed as being a “heat-of-the-moment” altercation resulting from long hours.
Angelo might not be done making changes, either. Several of the team’s college scouts have expiring contracts and others could be let go in order to hire replacements that are more to Ruskell’s liking.

I really figured they’d have to give up a future late round draft pick to go with Williams, but this is better.

WTF! How can the Bears trade a guy that had 20 sacks in one game!!
Williams had some decent moments last year, recording 20 sacks in a game he started for Lance Briggs. He was a restricted free agent, which is one reason the Bears were willing to move him.

maybe we get a trade going for Kahlil Bell,
because of his opening 72-yard run as a Bear.
That said, Williams has a ton of upside and could turn out to be a very good player for the Panthers for years to come. He’s been learning the position behind some very good players, imo.
