Alex Brown signs with the Saints, 2/$6m

Looks like Brown signed with the champs. 2 years, $6m. A reasonable price...one that I kind of hoped we could bring him back at. Oh well. Kind of the price range I figured. I think the team is really convinced Izzy and Anderson give us close to Brown's production, which I don't necessarily disagree with. Brown was solid, but that's it. Anyway, good luck to Alex. He always came to work, and was a great team leader.

Sorry .....

……. heres the LINK .

So Princetoncubs how about that he got way less , try half , of what we were gonna pay him .

oh noez!

someone called me out on the internetz!

I never said that he’d get the same K in a relatively depressed open market, just that his current one wasn’t a logical reason to cut him. The Saints are getting a good deal.

by PrincetonCubs on Apr 7, 2010 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

The reason to cut him ....

…. was because hes a 5.5 million over two year guy not a 5 million per season guy . We were overpaying for an average player and we finally did something about it . That said I really wish AB was still a Bear , but its a business and this was a good business move .

by MidWayMonster54 on Apr 7, 2010 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

While you make a good point...

if the Bears do not do anything in the FA market to use that money, it’ll be a waste. Spending an extra $2.5 million for a solid guy is better than saving $6 mil and having no one to fill his spot. The Bears are thin at DE behind Peppers and releasing Brown makes that issue worse. Even if the Bears draft a guy at DE, say somewhere behind FS, and LG/RT, are they going to get an A Brown quality DE? Even in the 3rd round that’s a stretch. Just releasing a guy to save on salary is stupid if there is no plan to reallocate those funds to a specific need. Let’s hope it’s not to help pay for Manumaleuna!

Didn't they get Brown in the 4th?

I’m just sayin’
(I was avidly against the Bears getting rid of Brown)

Chuck Norris once met Dick Butkus and had a very odd feeling come over him. Chuck later realized it was fear

by BearNecessities on Apr 8, 2010 6:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess that's kinda what I'm saying...

why trade away the 4th round guy who you know can play the position, even if he’s unspectacular, just to have the need at DE for a guy who can be a solid back-up and emergency starter if necessary? Can the Bears get “lucky” again in the 4th-5th round with another Brown, or will it end up as another Melton/Gilbert project? Is the new Bear’s motto…“we’ll save money, no matter how much it costs!”? I’m questioning the logic/strategy of the move, not necessarily defending Brown’s abilities.

Because they believe

the combo of Izzy and Marc will be an upgrade.

I am a huge fan of Izzy...

He, IMO, is the best all-around D-line guy. He can play every position well and is the perfect rotation sub because he knows all the positions. I see him as best at the DE position, but my guess is Harris will be hurt or useless or both this season, so Izzy will have to spell the 3-tech more than usual and thus take him away from the DE spot too much. Having Brown, or any other competent DE who knows the system, to be in that rotation would be preferable to Melton/Gilbert’s OJT. I think not having Brown is worse than paying him $5mil this season.

It's difficult to determine his value

I don’t believe he’s worth what the Bears were going to pay him, but certainly someone has to step up at LE. Izzy will most likely spell Harris once in awhile on passing downs at DT.

I agree...

he’s probably not worth $5mil, but I see it as better to overpay him knowing what they have, rather than save the money…UNLESS…they get another quality D-lineman with that cash. Or perhaps, as has been suggested, get Atogwe with it. Having $5mil to spend and no one to spend it on is just as dumb as overpaying for a bench guy. Mostly, my concern is Harris being the problem, not the loss of Brown.

I think it is hard

to not be a fan of Izzy. He is the ultimate team player, hard worker and a genuinely great person. I talk him up around my boys all the time hoping they learn something from his example.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

exactly

if the move wasn’t made with a subsequent use of the $ savings in mind to improve the team at another position, it doesn’t make sense. Why take away depth and durability at an important position?

Except that the....

Bears have already spent a lot of FA money, and have to draft yet, as well. They may have been clearing out Brown’s salary to help them with the $20M they have to now pay Peppers this year, and not because of future wants.

Remember the Headlines about the Front Office clearing up $25M for FAs? Well, IIRC, Peppers gets $20M, Taylor gets $7M, and Manumaleuna get’s $6.1M this year. Sounds to me like the Bears broke that $25M by about $8.1M, and we’re still wanting the Bears to pick up a guard and a safety. The Brown release brings them back down to the closer range that they alloted, effectively making Peppers a net increase of $15M on the position for the year.

so my typing sucks

I’ll proofread my post one of these days

by jay42 on Apr 8, 2010 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

lol....

that’s why my biggest wish for the site is a “edit” button for comments. And it’s not just for poor typing, either. There are those times when I write something that sounds one way in my head, all witty and stuuf, and then just looks like I’m being a complete ass when I read it after it’s been posted. I’ve learned to use the “preview button” a lot more, but I still screw it up a lot……….

I'd vote no on the edit button.

I actually like people having to be accountable for what they type. This isn’t directed at you, but it’s nice to call people out later on when they make asinine comments and assumptions.

I'm a member of several sites that....

give you the edit button, but said edit button only works on comments that haven’t been replied to. So you cannot change something you said that someone else had a beef with, but when you’re a dumb@ss like me and forget to proofread, you have an opportunity to change it. It also allows you to quickly add something to the post if you realize you forgot something important instead of having to reply to yourself, or reply twice to a comment. I like that. I wouldn’t want an edit button, though, that allowed “replied to” posts to be changed. It would absolutely make every argument shifty…..

If we had an edit button, would half of the arguments on this site still happen?

Glad to see Alex land on a good team....

Best of luck Alex, and thanks for 8 years of memories!
