Gearing Up For 2010.......Did We Do Enough?

We have all been witness to many changes with our beloved Chicago Bears during this off season.  So entering the 2010 season I'm confident other fans aside from myself are wondering, will it be enough?  Let's break it down in Pro and Con format.  First the Pro's and then the Con's.  One thing is for certain, the only direction we can go is UP.

                                                                                   Pro's:

A.  Mike Martz hired as Offensive Coordinator.

This move was long overdue.  The Offense was stagnant and predictable.  The arrival of Jay Cutler in 2009 only reinforced this concept.  Ron Turner was in way over his head in how to handle a young gunslinger type quarterback.

B.  Mike Tice hired as Offensive line coach.

Another move that should bring back the rushing Offense in 2010 and shore up the pass game for jay Cutler in terms of protection.  Tice can teach young players like Josh Beekman, Chris Williams and J'Marcus Webb the finer points of blocking NFL style.  I look for 7th round pick J'Marcus Webb to be a starter by Mid 2010 under Mike Tice's knowledge being passed to him.

C.  Rod Marinelli as Defensive Coordinator.

We went from Ron Rivera to Bob Babich to Lovie Smith and it leaves most of us wondering why Ron Rivera was ever let go in the first place.  Hopefully Rod Marinelli is an upgrade from Lovie and company in this role.  Because the Detroit Lions are the Detroit Lions I believe Rod Marinelli deserves another chance.  I think the Bears as an organization pulled off an astounding feat by having 3 assistant coaches that have all been head coaches in the NFL.  Don't be surprised if 1 of the three replaces Mr. ' The defense is on me' in 2012.

D.  Acquisition Of Julius Peppers.

One of the top free agent prizes going into the free agency market.  I have to hand it to Jerry Angelo, when he screws up the drafts he makes up for it on signings of free agents.  Little needs to be said here.  The Man demands double teams.  And if he is double teamed it creates chances for the rest of the Defensive line.  Assuming Tommie Harris can stay healthy with less double teams, every team in the NFL just lost valuable time in the pocket to throw the ball.

E. Acquisition Of Chester Taylor.

Another excellent move by the Bears.  Hell, brings us back to the Days of Neal Anderson backing up Payton.  Not that Forte is a Payton but he is a good back that played hurt most of the Year last season.  We now have depth at the position.  A Two headed monster that we see in Miami, Carolina and Baltimore.  Taylor is more of a downhill runner that compliments Forte's cutback style.  I look forward to dual set Offensive backfield formations.

F.  Acquisition of Brandon Manumaleuna.

Yes Greg Olsen, we know you can catch the ball as well as most Receivers in the NFL.  Mike Martz has called you out though.  We need blocking TE's to set up the run game.  The Bears landed one of the best in the NFL available in free agency with Manumaleuna.  I really look forward to seeing this guy in goal line situations.  We really struggled in this area last season and it looks like we just got a lot better.

G.  Trade for Chris Harris.

This was a solid move but was it enough?  Chris Harris brings a nice resume to the weakest area of the team last season.  We will need to depend on Manning or Afalava to shore up the other side at Safety.  Peanut Tillman has been having troule staying healthy as well.  However, with the Key addition to the Defensive line the Bears Defensive backfield just became a lot better,

H.  Brian Urlacher, Lance Brigg's, Pisa Tinoisamoa.

All 3 players healthy again going into the 2010 season.  There are not many teams in the NFL that have a linebacker tandem such as this on their roster.  Urlacher is running out of time for that Super Bowl ring.  Let's hope we see the Urlacher of old.

I.  Brett Favre.

The man needs surgery on a previously injured ankle following the NFC Championship game.  Rumor has it he's hanging up his cleats.  But do we believe him?  As much as it pains me to say this,  Minnesota is a much better team with Brett Favre at the helm.  I DO NOT believe he is coming back this time.

                                                                                      Con's

A.  Jay Cutler

The jury is still out on Jay Cutler.  His reads in the Red Zone are the thing nightmare's are made of.  With Jay Cutler it is what it is.  A tremendous talent that throws some really bad passes at times.  It is difficult to ignore the number of interceptions he threw last Year.  Only Jay Cutler can change the Con into a Pro heading into the 2010 season.

B.  Offensive Line.

Not a lot has changed here.  We have to pin our hopes on a new Offensive line coach in Tice and a 7th round pick in J'Marcus Webb.  Hopefully the lack of effort to draft an Offensive lineman in the 3rd,4th,5th or 6th round does not come back to bite us.

C.  Defensive Backfield.

We have 1  new/old  face in Chris Harris.  Do you hear crickets chirping?  Major Wright was taken as the best Safety on the board but when will he be ready?  As we can see there are a lot of question marks in exhibit 'C', no pun intended.

So what are your thoughts going into the 2010 season?

Totally agree

I don’t think he’s terrible from time to time, but when he is talking about Cutler it’s like he has a personal vendetta out against him… him and anyone who has not aided to the “rise” of the Broncos. The guy is such a homer towards Denver, it’s ridiculous.

VICTORY IS OURS in 2010.

Missing Urlacher was a major step back in and of itself. Coming back healthy with the addition of Peppers and a capable veteran safety in Harris, the defense regains it’s former domination. If Tice can work a miracle with the o-line the sky’s the limit with the Bears in this upcoming season. We’ve got enough pieces. You’re not going to have pro-bowlers at every position.

by Big Ike on May 15, 2010 8:22 AM CDT reply actions

Just food for thought.

I agree that we have a great chance at doing something this season. Whether it is a Superbowl or winning the division but… Urlacher was healthy at the start of last season and he ended up getting hurt. I agree that him getting injured was a huge blow to the team and then a few other key injuries through the season also. If we can stay healthy we will reign supreme this year I believe.

As for Tice,

I really hope he can shore up our offensive line. I’m still not sure why they haven’t brought in someone other than a seventh round and a few PFA’s, but they obviously know better than I do.

I’m in a debate with a member over at the Norseman who likes to speak in speculation and opinions. In the midst of the garbage that guy was spewing, one of the other members, a writer there, offered this on Tice, thought it would be good to pass along.

When Tice was the o-line coach here, he made good players great (Birk, Stringer), average players good (Dave Dixon) and mediocre players serviceable (Chris Liewinski, Corbin Lacina). Hell, he helped mold Birk from a 6th round draft pick into arguably the second best center in team history behind Mick Tingelhoff.

Tice was generally considered the best o-line coach in the NFL, and was being talked about as an offensive coordinator before Denny Green got shown the door and Tice was made coach. He’ll definitely make your line better, and if Martz can get through to Cutler, you have the makings of a good offense.

I really hope Tice is as good as he’s been advertised.

That said, I did post some incorrect numbers in my original looks at the drops. I’ve gone back and updated the chart. It makes a difference in the amount of the Vikings’ receivers and Hester’s as well, all for the better. But doesn’t change the point, that Hester doesn’t “drop the ball too much.”

The OL has changed a lot from the start of last year

CWilliams will be the LT to start the season. He will be a huge improvement over the once great Pace. That move frees up Omiyale to play his natural RT spot. OT play will be much improved. Garza will be adequate at RG, so the question marks are LG and C. I hope Beekman can win the C job from the deteriorating Kreutz, which will leave the LG spot to be filled. All in all, a lot has changed.

Krentz.................

All I know about this guy is he likes to shoot pistols at the firing range and drink beers with FBI agents. He was a solid player anchoring the Offensive lines for the Bears for many Years. Last Year however he was less than average to put it mildly. He if plays like that again this Year we may be seeing his swan song with his career with the Chicago Bears.

I believe if you put someone servicable beside Kreutz he will be fine.

He has always he issues with the huge D-tackles though, but I believe with the spurs being removed from his ankle and no pain he wil do a good job.. Not that they souldn’t be looking towards the future at this point but he still gives them time to develope whoever they have in mind ( whether that be LL or Beekman ).

by gageguy on May 15, 2010 5:27 PM CDT reply actions

Enough??

Enough to do what, have a better record? then yeah i think we at least go 8-8 but still miss the playoffs.

While I agree we definitely made moves to improve the team, i do not think we did enough to vault us into contention for the Super Bowl. Right now before seeing us perform as a cohesive unit I’d say maybe we did enough to make the playoffs, but get bounced in the 1st round.

Had we kept Alex Brown and signed a veteran WR or maybe an OL in addition to or in lieu of some other moves I think we would have increased our odds of getting to the Super Bowl dramatically for a small fraction of the orgs’ $1+ BILLION in an uncapped year.

by No It All on May 16, 2010 9:34 AM CDT reply actions

Indeed; all I see are a front office who’ve received an almighty boot up the backside to improve the team during the offseason, instead of sitting back and spouting rhetoric as usual. Other teams hire competent coaches / coordinators and trade for/sign players to fill gaps on the team every offseason, I’m not about to go all smiley just because we’re finally behaving like a franchise that wants to do well this coming season.

What I Mean By Enough

What we had was not working and 2009 was a very painful season to watch. The main theme of the post was to illustrate the Bears organization made a lot of moves in the offseason affecting coaching and player personal. I see you liked Alex Brown as did I. Aside from my personal feelings I have to bottom line the situation we had. The situation was a Defensive line that failed over and over again to get adequate pressure on the opposing QB. According to our fearless leader Lovie Smith the Cover 2 Defense does not work without constant pressure on the QB. As a result the Bears cut 50% of the Defensive line and brought in 1 of the best pass rushers available via free agency. My belief is that all the off-season moves we made coupled with some coaching moves means we can only improve from where we were at in 2009. A Super Bowl would be wonderful but I am more of a realist. Maybe winning the division and making it to the Conference Championship game.

by Gesiakob on May 16, 2010 1:30 PM CDT reply actions

Not even

I think at most we get to the playoffs but we are not winning the division or getting to the Super Bowl. There are still too many holes to fill and the other teams in the division are better and the Lions are no longer jokes. I’m a realist too but not to the point of assuming we can make it as far as you say. Although that’d be nice I don’t see it happening with the coaching staff we got. They’ll find a way to ruin it

Marinelli a "Pro" ???

Not sure I would classify that as a pro, maybe an undecided.

He has never been a DC, as a HC well, we know how that turned out. He has no “system” so to speak of so it will be following Lovie’s lead from last year would be my guess. A puppet if you will, and no I am not sold on Lovie’s system either.

Marinelli was used as a scape goat for fans who would have raised a huge stink should Lovie remained as DC.

by TheMan1 on May 17, 2010 8:12 AM CDT reply actions

He's a pro

in the sense that his players and other coaches respect him, and his football knowledge. And he has been around the game a long time.

by tommite622 on May 17, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

While I agree what he'll bring is an unknown...

How do you know he has no system?

He believes in the base Tampa 2, but none of us are privy to the inner workings of his particular version or his playbook for that matter.

Will he mix in more cover 1 or cover 3, will he believe in more disguises of his zones, will he zone blitz, will he even blitz?

Will he want his corners to press, will he roll his coverage to a top threat WR, will he double A gap blitz, will the Mug look cease to exist?

He might be a puppet, but I have a hard time thinking someone with his background and history will just go through the motions.

because if he had a system

It probably would have been announced on WCG twitter.

Lets restate, he has not shown nor developed a system and if you think he is in the meetings challenging Lovie I guess that’s your opinion. Being none of us have the privy to information, we will just have to go with what we believe.

And if he implements more corner press, double teams against top WR, or whatever more than what we saw Lovie do last year, I will be happy, I just don’t see him shaking things up.

by TheMan1 on May 17, 2010 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Captain Rod, has a system, for sure...

You do know that he was a defensive coordinator once before… at Rosemead High School in San Gabriel Valley, CA. It was his first coaching job, and for anyone keeping record, he also taught history. So there, take that.

I think Rod will be fine. I believe he will more aggressive than Lovie.

Not so much with blitzing but with the corners playing closer to the line trying to throw off the timing. I think he believes the extra split second that gives him could be the difference we need. I’m not sure why Lovie got away from that especially on third and long. Probably because our front four couldn’t get any pressure, We still should have been pressing the line though.

But I have no say so here is to what we are all hoping, he leads the D to Monsters status once again!

He's a guy who will implement Lovie's defense

but will have the fire and passion to get the team jacked up and running on all cylinders. When’s the last time we’ve had that in a D coordinator? I’m optimistic.

That’s the bit that’s worrying us.

That wasn't going to change

regardless of who came in as DC, might as well just accept it. I’m sure that’s why Perry Fewell wasn’t interested in the position.

I read that the Giants are going to more of a Cover 2 base

Perry's known for Cover-2

but my point was maybe he preferred not to have the HC breathing down his neck about his defensive play calling. Coughlin is an offensive guy.

Nobody wanted the job, and by “nobody” I mean Perry Fewell didn’t want it. Marinelli didn’t, either.

Not Shake Thing Up?

I’m sorry but did you happen to watch some of our blow out losses last Year? The game against Cincinnati sticks in my craw. The practically scored against us every time they touched the ball on Offense. I have been in therapy to try and forget the other blow out losses.

I just can't see Marinelli as a yes man

There are those in the NFL, but they also get no respect from their players. And Rod has respect from his guys.

They did enough.

14-2, Super Bowl bound. Because optimism is boundless in the preseason after all and I want something to look forward to!

If you really want to be optomistic

why not go for 24-0, that includes wins in the preseason and bye week. Take that Maurice Morris!!!!!

i forgot about the terrible Marinelli promotion

or as others have said basically keeping Lovie as the DC

by mike b on May 18, 2010 3:01 AM CDT reply actions

Rod Marinelli is going to work wonders for our DLine!

It isn’t really a promotion if you don’t want the job.

Nobody Wanted It

Because they did not want to be attached to Lovie’s idiocy. The way this shakes down is if Lovie’s Defense fails AGAIN, he certainly will blame the Defensive Coordinator and not step up like a Man and take responsibility.

by Gesiakob on May 18, 2010 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

doesn't matter if he doesnt step up

if defense fails, we won’t make the playoffs
no playoffs = new management

No

They need a replacement for Tommie Harris, and a stud offensive lineman. We are going to lose in the trenches. We’ll be playing cover two instead of Tampa two cuz Urlacher is going to have to play up to stop the run and our corners and safeties are not good enough for a cover two. The offense is going to depend on the O-line, we know Omiyale can’t play LG can he play RT his “natural position”? How often is Cutler going to make his 7 step drop only to find a DE a step behind him? I see a lot of high scoring games that we end up losing. #15 offense #20 defense 8-8 or 9-7 season.
