The Bears Den: Friday the 11th of June, 2010
Ahman Green is headed to the UFL - Remember when he used to consistently run all over the Bears? I'm glad that's over.
NFL - Photo Gallery - Yahoo! Sports is kind enough to bring us this photo of Rex Ryan that is captured in such a way as to make him look like he threw the ball straight up in the air. Perhaps he should've brought his supposedly-great but-I-have-yet-to-see-it young QB to throw it, instead.
DeMaurice Smith and the NFLPA filed a legal action - The NFLPA aren't messing around with this one. Here's some more insight into that story.
Carroll confident he has learned from past NFL mistakes - I think things will work out a lot better this time around for him. Added bonus, he doesn't have to worry about secretly paying players in the NFL. What? Too soon?
I dedicate this video to Ron Turner:

I watched that on TV yesterday
it was interesting and I think he handled the questions (including the ones about Payton) pretty well.
"A lot of fans were drawn to me because they knew that whatever the score was, I was going to run as hard as I could on every play. You don't have that now, you have guys waiting for next week or even next year." - Walter Payton

Yeah it was a good interview
Even if Jim Rome is a tool. I did like how Urlacher didn’t back down from his comments. That’s what I like about him. Anytime he says something controversial he always come back with a “Yeah I said it? So what? Was any of it not true?” attitude. The guy doesn’t BS, that’s for sure.
"I was interviewing George Halas and I asked him who is the greatest running back you ever saw. And he said, 'That would be Red Grange.' And I asked him if Grange was playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain. And he said, 'About 750, maybe 800 yards.' And I said, 'Well, 800 yards is just okay.' He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old.' - Chris Berman

Why is it that I notice page layout issues here at WCG, and not at other SBNation sites? Or is it just me? GGAAAAHHHHH!!

Bad situation all around. Ironic how both Jones and Benson were labeled busts after being drafted in the top ten of their respective drafts, and then after a change of venue broke out of their shells and became respectable and productive backs. The two were more alike than either of them would have liked to admit.

I think, the whole sharing the ball thing bugs Forte as well……..He should be happy, he doesn’t have too carry the ball 316 times…….

Every athlete want's to be "the man", secure a legacy and maybe get a HOF berth at the end of his career.
These guys all want to accumulate the stats ensuring a big payday when their rookie contract expires. It’s harder to do if you don’t get the ball enough.

If the back is good enough.....
he will stand out and secure a place even while having to share carries with a solid back like Chester Taylor……..Ask Adrien Peterson.

Perception is a funny thing....
Peterson has dropped fewer balls in his first three seasons (20), and while taking more carries, than Walter Payton did in his first three season (30).
Still funny though…..rec’d

but Barry Sanders was the shit!

yup...
I posted a comment in the thread about Barry:
On a side note, did you know Barry Sanders NEVER, in his ten year career, had a season below 1,115 yards rushing and 1,320 yards from scrimmage. And those "low" numbers came in his 1993 season where he only played 11 total games. Oh, and he did that while playing for the Lions! Jeebus, I knew he was good, but not that good?!?

Reviewing the 2006 draft...
This got emailed to us, so I thought I’d throw some traffic/ discussion their way:
A running theme in their most recent drafts, the Bear’s went without a first round pick in 2006. A trade down with Buffalo yielded additional 2nd and 3rd round picks instead, which turned into S Daniel Manning and DT Dusty Dvoracek.
Head on over and let them know what you think.
You guys have a good weekend...I know what I'm doing.

Know will get chances...
that makes sense, cause he is, ya know, a receiver. It would also make sense that he’d actually catch passes thrown to him since he is, ya know, a receiver. But the Bears offense never makes sense. Maybe Martz and Tice have finally changed that.
Chester Taylor will make our offense and Matt Forte better. Dude can’t play every down, neither can most defensive players. While I expect the relationship between Forte and Taylor to be reciprocal, I think Forte is going to impress this year and finally be deserving of the high fantasy draft pick he was last season (ie sleeper this year).
My Little Ponys , I like that, but it is not lost on me that Aromashadu is a Colts throw away, but already penciled in by many as a starter. I hope is and all that, but not adding a veteran receiver after last years passing debacle was a bad move. Martz or not, potential takes time to develop, personally I want to win now. It is naive to think that those growing pains are entirely over. A humble (yeah yeah) TO on the cheap with a chip on his shoulder could put us over the top, I’d make that call.
Bus before twitter, just sayin.
No TO, please
He’ll have to learn Martz’s offense just like the rest of our WR’s and he’s old as dirt. Our receivers will be better due to the simple fact that this will be their second year playing together.

Wow...
“Our receivers will be better due to the simple fact that this will be their second year playing together.”
nothing about that is either simple or a fact. it is naive to think the growing pains are over.
The TO of five years ago
would be a maybe…but the TO now? I don’t know, Jerry Rice made me believe that I should never discount a veteran WR, but those guys are few and far between.
I’m one of those rare guys who neither hates TO or is a fan…I hope the guy does well for himself, but he’s already been given 3 chances to be the “humble” WR one hopes he’d be.
TO with Donovan again in Washington would make for one HELL of a storyline this year I must say though.

I'd say I am pretty ambivalent about TO
come week 6 i think itll be obvious that we could use TO or a veteran WR
Well, I like our WRs...but I'd say
the Bears may regret not picking up a guard like Smiley or Duece Luiti…but I’m very intrigued about Lance Louis and his crazy speed for his size.
After the home opener…if the Bears can beat the Cowboys on the road and the Packers back at Soldier that’d be an accomplishment to be 3-0, I can’t even think that far ahead into week 6 when there are immediate challenges in the 2nd and 3rd games.

while our line needs help
i think Tice will make us better then we are on the OL.
It is my opinion that the WR corps is the worst on this team and at this point expecting improvement in this corps is the most obvious pitfall we will face this year. What is shocking about this is the lack of experience at WR is/was a large reason for Cutler’s 26 INTs, but we have not addressed this youth at WR in any way other then hoping our young players improve just by aging, like cheese.
I hope and expect our WRs to improve, but i do not think that any of the 3 of Knox, DA and Bennett will contribute as much as TO or another veteran would this year. And that is talking about contributing when really our problem last year was the WR youth was a detriment. I think that youth will continue to be a detriment, one that would not exist with a veteran.
The notion that Martz offense now focuses on throwing to an area, and not just a player reinforces my point. After they were abysmal last year we are now relying even more on or WRs to be in a specific place at a certain time. I feel like this is asking our young WRs to run, before they can walk. Is Earl Bennett going to take another year off just to learn the knew playbook?
Eh...I trust Martz
I was more impressed with his tenure with the 49ers and Lions than with the Rams if that makes sense. I mean the guy turned hot garbage in San Francisco and Detroit into decent/respectable offenses.
I like Tice, and I hope he does well with the line. It all starts in the trenches and if the line is solid I think we will be alright despite how the WRs play.

It's also...
Intentionally obtuse to equate better with growing pains being completely over, but I suppose miscontruing his statement makes your counter easier to formulate. It’d be naive to think that the growing pains are completely over, and it’d show an equal lack of football acumen to think that they aren’t going to be better than they were last year.

Martz's offense
I think we’re good at WR…don’t need TO!!! The RB tandem w/ #22 and #29 will help keep both of them fresh. I also think we’ll have some leads late-game and having 2 good and healthy backs to close out the game will help alot!!!
