The Bears Den: Friday the 18th of Twenty-Ten Edition
In football, you have the offense and the defense. You can't have one without the other. Respect will be paid.
Davis standing out in OTA practices - Yes, that Davis. In other news, it's raining frogs, dogs and cats are living together, and apparently the Martzfense can do anything it sets its mind to.
Chester Taylor, Bears plan to run in make-or-break season - I'm sure they'll run it a fair percentage, but this is too good an opportunity to say, "yeah, after you catch it, you should probably run."
Chicago Bears: Guard Roberto Garza a rock on Bears' shifting line - Roberto Garza is like Prudential for the Chicago Bears. Also, Twisted Sister wrote a song about wanting him.
Bears' Briggs would welcome 18-game season - Briggs likes football. I also have the sinking suspicion he enjoys getting paid for it, as evidenced by some quotes in here.
For Knox, it's like being a rookie all over again - relearning football is hard, but a lot of fun. Expect a lot of this story until there is something to talk about.
Guess what? I have flaws. What are they? Oh, I donno, I sing in the shower? Sometimes I spend too much time volunteering. I follow WCG on Twitter. Occasionally, I'll hit somebody with my car. So sue me--no, don't sue me. That is opposite the point I'm trying to make.
Goodell: NFL doesn't need 4 preseason games - Four preseason games will not last long, one way or the other. If Darth Goodell wants something done, you better damn well expect it's going to get done.
Lions lose 2 workouts for violating workout rules - This just in, the Lions are finding new, unexplained ways to screw up practice.
Jaguars forfeit two summer workouts after complaint - This even more just in, apparently so are the Jags.
Report: Jets could make Revis highest-paid DB in history - I was just thinking the league should have an overpriced market for cornerbacks, and now the Jets seem to be granting my wishes. Hey Jets--I don't wanna go to work today, can you make something happen about that?
Hahaha, this always makes me chuckle.

Rashied Davis will have to start hanging on to the ball in games instead of just OTAs.
No one has ever questioned his work ethic, but the guy dropped so many key passes in 2007 & 2008 I nearly went apoplectic over the Bears insistance of playing him. I want the WRs that catch the ball consistantly to make the team.
I can usually tolerate most of Larry Mayers' fluff pieces
But this is ridiculous, the guy had like 2 receptions all of last year and this year he is suppose to be all of the sudden relevant in the offense? Really Larry?

Here's the thing on Rashied Davis...
… Special Teams & experience.
Period!
He’s going to make it hard for Jauquin Iglesias to see the field (5th receiver).
Only way I see Iglesias beating Davis out this year is if:
a) injury
b) Angelo makes an executive decision.
c) Bears go 6 WRs
Outside of that, I see another year of practice squad for Iglesias.
Semper Fi
Iglesias
was on the active roster last season. Some team would’ve gobbled him up if the Bears left him on the practice squad. I see both of them making the team again.

So, you believe they will keep 6 receivers?
Hester, Bennett, Knox, Aromashodu, Davis, and Iglesias?
So, then there would have to be a cut of a veteran player on the 53-man roster from last year. Who do you think that will be?

Rideu
also looked good during last year’s OTA’s and Training Camp…Let’s see what Davis can do in the Pre-Season games (not the best indicator but it is what it is).

Davis showing off in OTA’s is a lot better than the alternative.

They usually keep six anyways
and now with Martz aboard, there’s even more focus on the WR position. I don’t believe they’ll keep a single FB on the roster. What’s the point anyways? He likes to use TEs as H-backs.

They will go 6 maybe 7 receivers
no FB will make the cut

6 or 7 would hurt SP/Ts
At this point, if the Bears were to keep Jauquin Iglesias and a 7th receiver, they would severely limit another unit— probably DBs.
With Bowman and Tillman’s history of injuries, I can’t see 7 receivers making the roster. I’m having a very hard time seeing 6.
You can expect 7 or 8 DLs because of the “premium” Angelo has on them and the rotation Smith likes to employ. The LBs are veteran and are needed in SP/Ts as they are usually your best tacklers.
6 is going to depend upon how well Iglesias can make tackles this preseason. I can’t see how he beats Rashied Davis in this category who has made a living on SP/Ts plays.

Six wide outs made the final 53 in 2009 and 2008
Why would any less make it in 2010? With an offense that actually uses 4 WR sets, why would they now decide to only carry 5?

True...
But, I don’t see 7 as you suggested. 6 could possibly be the number, Les…
… But, I don’t see it being a matter of the offense dictating how many receivers stay on active roster in 2010. True— 3 receiver sets in Martz system is almost a standard with 4 and 5 being a option. However, that won’t dictate the roster when it’s already been noted that Greg Olsen will be one of those receivers.
Again, I think Hester, Bennett, Knox, and Aro will be there. You can also throw all four TEs in that mix with Greg Olsen being more like a hybrid TE/WR. But Iglesias, Rideau, and the new draft pick will need to show that they can play SP/Ts better than Davis because the Bears will more than likely use Greg Olsen or Forte in 5 WR sets more than likely (just as they did in St. Louis or Detroit).
The DB depth is major concern this year and to have too few DBs with Bowman and Tillman starting has to be a concern.

i disagree with no fullback making the cut.
I see one making the cut and another making the practice squad. Martz still uses fullbacks from time to time, so I can see a guy like Eddie Williams starting because he can run and catch the football. I think it will come down to Clark or Davis because I can’t see Martz carrying 4TE.

Sure,
Paint with the broadest brush you can.
This is the Internet. There are idiots abound on EVERY site. Yours is no different.
Just because some idiot registered himself as “dailynorseman” on PFT and said something as stupid as the Gaines Adams comment in the Propheteer’s sig does not mean he should be taken as an example of the type of people that post at DN.
Do you not see the parallels between racism, sexism, ageism and any other “ism”; and saying that everyone from our site is an arrogant, classless, low-life?
I do.
Personally, I would rather have intelligent discussion about how the Bears have made some good off-season moves. That I am actually worried more about the Bears than the Packers.
How about how much of an idiot Brad Childress is?
Maybe even how the year off might prolong Urlacher’s career?
Come on over, I am sure you will find our idiot to intellect ratio is about on par with the rest of the intarwebz.

That's the thing..
I have posted over there and I have seen other’s post over there. It’s seems though with the site in question intellect doesn’t overrule blind arrogance and the bull that goes along with it. Plus I would hate to get banned for voicing an opinion that went against anything saying that the Vikings are’nt the best thing since sliced bread.
We are always welcome to intelligent conversation. We don’t ask for you to agree with us ( which we know you won’t most of the time) but if what you say is true than the minority has a bigger voice than the majority. Propheteer’s quote is just one of many off colored and uncalled for responses that have rolled off the fingertips of posters on that site. Not saying anything at all sometimes is just as bad as saying it.
So with that I say if i’m wrong show me and I’ll admit that I’m wrong until then my opinion will not change.
Adrian Pedestrian!! Now that's funny Mr. Bayless...
I do have to say that I have not been on the site as often as I used to be, so I cannot speak for the last few months.
But I know none of the 3 “admins” of the site would ever ban a person from another SBnation site because they said something that was anti-Vikings. As a matter of fact, I cannot recall anyone getting banned over there, and that may be the problem. Considering your site seems to have 5 contributors, 2 editors and 2 managers; it seems this place may be better policed for the kind of behavior that you claim permeates our site.
But I say again, you can’t say that simply because a guy on a completely different website(PFT, which is overrun by that type of person) calls himself “Dailynorseman” he is somehow a microcosm of the type of people at our page.
So let me ask you: have you always had this opinion of our site, or is it a recent change?
I'd somewhat agree.
there are some decent and intelligent people over the Norseman, and I’ve had great back and forth with a good number of members there. It sucks that the bad apples are such abound that it gives your site a bad name.
While I have no idea if KCViking is in fact rasist, that’s how his original post (should the Redskins use a white guy calling black guys lazy as a motivator) read, to me at least. I was actually taken aback that more members of the site didn’t request that it should be removed in the comments section. So while the majority may have been against it, they are not the ones that spoke up for it. Thus, making the minority the vocal majority.
Just like the new post on your site. All I have done is stand up for the rules that are supposed to govern the Norseman, and in turn have had multiple personal attacks against me, by multiple users. Yet again, where are the self-governing members that care about how their site is represented? Furthermore, where are the mods? The same mods who didn’t remove the original post, since as it turns out the original poster self-removed it.
And for the record, I’m done with that thread. I’ve said my peace and I refuse to go back over there and play childish name-calling or “Bearz rule, Queens suk” type of games. So, “Doc Goth” can keep his “candy” – whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Actually,
The person who reposted the article was completely different than the person who originally posted the article discussing race.
KC Viking posted the original.
Jethrophet posted the second topic where he changed “Race” to “Phat”., and made the attack personal.
In defense of KCviking, he is not the type of person to purposely start a flame war or to say something with the intent to offend or irritate. His original post was against DN guidelines, but not overtly racist in my opinion.
His posts generally have some real value to them.
True.
But I was referring to where Jethro deleted the phat content in his post after KCV requested that he do so. Instead of outright deleting it, he changed it to an all out personal attack on me, at that point. Thus, why I felt the need to respond. It’s been removed by Gonzo now, and all is good in the hood. Live and let live, in my opinion. To be honest, I’m done with the topic, as I would have been if it would have died when the original post was self-removed.

it was not an attack of you, it was an attack of your words.
he changed it to an all out personal attack on me
there is a big difference. you called people racist who are not racist. although this comment uses the word racist, it is not racist, nor is the person posting in any way racist. and the intent of this comment is not racist or even racial.
in fact the contrary is true. by defending the original poster, i was protecting his reputation. you read the post incorrectly and reacted to it. you called someone a racist who clearly stated that he was not and that the issue was not about race.
you never once even addressed the topic of the post. it seemed as though you were too caught up in reacting and trying to act righteous, when you clearly misinterpretted the entire point of the post. that is damaging and i take acception to your actions there.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Really?
The following, among many others, are your words from your fan post that your site manager deleted:
well, we can’t control the i.q. level of these chicagoans…but, maybe we should institute a minimum i.q. and test them before they can post here! i mean, i have nothing against dumb people, but why do they have to be chicago fans?
the monkey claimed that the post was “rac!st”,
the really funny part is that the ‘choking monkey’ who “kan’t read two good” is actually one of the editors over at
the ‘windy city gridiron’. i’ll post his very own profile below so that you can see what kind of person they allow to
be an editor of their blog.
however, it was easily misinterpreted by the small mind of this bear fan, ‘cheeky monkey’, aka david taylor.
some other incoherent stuff that i ran through google translator…..and it just came back as whining, crying baby talk. seriously, get that daiper changed, or adjust your medication….something.
and this one in the comments section from “DocGoth”
I’ll make David T my keyboard candy-bitch !!!!
Furthermore, I never once called KCV a racist. I said his post asking “should the skins get white people to call black people lazy to motivate Haynesworth” read that way. You, yourself, admitted that at first it seemed inappropriate. You altered your opinion because you read beyond the initial reaction. However, I simply cannot and did not overlook it. It should have, and did get removed.
Funny thing is, KCV had no issue removing it, and I actually had some respect for him when I found out that he removed it by himself. I was willing to drop it and move on. And I had, I wasn’t even posting on that thread until you changed your fan post and dedicated it as a personal attack on me.
As I have said before, I have been nothing but respectful on your site, following by your sites guidelines. It doesn’t matter what colors I ultimately represent, the least you could do is show the same respect.

david, you are mischaracterizing what occured
they author re-wrote his post to be an all out personal attack on me, my freelance company, my daughter, my intelligence, the Bears and WCG all in one epic swoop.
i know, because i made the post. i did not attack your freelance company, your daughter (who i didn’t even know of), the bears, or WCG.
i clearly laid out why i had a problem with people who comment without reading the posts they are commenting on. i pointed out how damaging the result was in this particular situation, i.e. by your own comments.
i also pointed out that you then made posting about it over here and encouraged others to go look at a post on another site that had absolutely nothing to do with the chicago bears or anyone who posts on this blog.
those actions are intended to “stir things up”. i take acception to that when the particular issue is one that much bigger than anything in sports.
your comments were off base and that is what i told you. i clearly laid out how and why you were misreading the post and defended someone who did not deserve your defamatory comments. you just weren’t willing to see it other than your initial reaction. that is sad.
it is funny how the actual content and point of the whole issue is being neatly avoided by you here and even over at the daily norseman.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
So, don’t you think that KCViking should get some credit for realizing that the post was taken in a way that he likely did not intend, and voluntarily removed the post?
absolutely.
And with him, I have no further issue.
