What Can Martz do for You ??

Over his NFL career Mike Martz has taken some just plain offensive offenses and turned them into something special . The Question in most Bears fans minds , and around the NFL for that matter , is can Martz really make the Bears offense better ? Is the Mike Martz style of offense really still valid or was it just he had some great years with the Rams and their great core of players ? The numbers say that Martz and his offensive philosophsy will make the Bears offensive much better . Lets take a look at some of Martz's previous stops and see just how much better we could get right after the jump .

Star-divide

First we'll take a look at Martz's claim to fame , The Greatest Show on Turf and the Rams before Martz . The numbers before Martz look a little something like this ......

1998 St. Louis Rams Offensive Stats ( Before Martz )

                                - 22nd in passing offensive at 192.2 yards per game

                                - 5th in passing attempts at 556

                                - 28th in passing Touchdowns with 12

To say the Rams offense was bad that year is a bit of an understatment . Now lets take a gander at the Rams offense with Mike Martz at the helm just one year later ......

1999 St. Louis Rams Offensive Stats ( With Martz )

                                - 1st in passing offense at 272.1 yards per game

                                - 19th in passing attempts at 530

                                - 1st in passing Touchdowns with 42

Is it just me or did he just take one the the worst offenses and turn them into a juggernaut ? They moved up 21 spots to first in passing offense and 27 spots in passing touchdowns to first place while lowering their passing attempts . Martz did his job and did it well with the Rams .

Now lets look at his next coaching gig with the Detroit Lions . Before Martz's offensive system the Lions looked something like this ......

                               2005 Detroit Lions ( Before Martz )

                                 - 26th in passing offense at 178.0 yards per game

                                 - 14th in pass attempts at 520

                                 - 26th in passing Touchdowns with 15

As we all know the Lions have been pretty bad over the past few seasons , but when Martz came in he transformed them into something respectable . Here are his accomplishments with the Lions ......

                               2006 Detroit Lions ( With Martz )

                                 - 7th in passing offense at 238.8 yards per game

                                 - 2nd in pass attempts at 596

                                 - 13th in passing Touchdowns with 21

Wow !!!!  . They moved up 21 spots to 7th ( funny I thik I've seen that number somewhere before ) in passing offense and 13 spots to 13th in passing touchdowns , but went up in attempts per game by 12 spots . He made the Lions scary with John Kitna at QB ( Kitnas career year in passing yards with 4208 ) . Also to be noted was Kevin Jones going from 20 receptions in 2005 to a whopping 61 in 2006 . Yet again Martz made his team much better in terms of the passing game .

And finally lets look at his most recent job with the San Francisco 49ers . Before Martz the 49ers looked something like this .......

                               2007 San Francisco 49ers ( Before Martz )

                                 - 32nd in passing offense at 145.0 yards per game

                                 - 22nd in pass attempts at 513

                                 - 26th in passing touchdowns with 15

Well thats just not a pretty sight now is it . Near or at the bottom of most passing stats . Now lets look at them with the addition of one Mike Martz .......

                               2008 San Francisco 49ers ( With Martz )

                                  - 13th in passing offense at 211.2 yards per game

                                  - 18th in pass attempts at 509

                                  - 13th in passing touchdowns with 21

Yet again Mikey does his job and does it well . He moved the 49ers up 19 spots to 13th in passing offense and 13 spots to 13th ( have I seen this before or is it just a bad case of De Ja Vue ? ) in passing touchdowns . Ummm did I mention he did this with J.T. O' Sullivan and Shaun Hill at QB ? Now thats just plain impressive !

So now lets take at look at our stats last season .......

                                2009 Chicago Bears ( Before Martz )

                                  - 17th in passing offense at 217.1 yards per game

                                  - 8th in pass attempts at 563

                                  - 10th in passing touchdowns with 27

This is by far the best offense Martz has been handed ( at least by the numbers ) over his last few stops . If trends continue our offense could be as good any in the league in passing . Martz's numbers are solid and overall steady when it comes to improvment in the passing game and the numbers support that . So are all of us Bears fans really hoping aginest hope or are we all just smart enough to realize that Mike Martz can and will make our offense better ?

In my opinion Martz will improve our offense as a whole . He'll make us explosive and unpredictable ( no more full back dives on 3rd & inches ) something we've lacked under the Ron Turner school of play . Matt Forte and Jay Cutler will have big come back seasons this year . Devin Hester , Devin Aromashodu and Johnny Knox will be studs in this offensive scheme . And Greg Olsen and our tightends will be a major factor in our passing game . But thats just my opinion whats yours WCG ?

* Just for some perspective I was completely aginest the Martz hiring , but with proven numbers like hes put up I find it hard now not to say that he'll make us much better .

Nice writeup.

I didn’t realize SF had improved that much when he was there.

I knew about the improvments the rams and lions made

i was under the impression the 49ers didn’t do much better but in reality they

if cutler’s interceptions are cut down which i think they will be

and players like hester knox and olsen are used creatively which once again i think they will be

we could be looking at a top 10 offense

Nice job!

I just want to point out that you don’t need to put a space before the period, exclamation point, question mark, or comma. It’s like this. Not like this . or this ? or this ! Got it?

Anyway, I hope this Martz- makes- offenses- better trend continues.

Wowwwwww……….What’s even scarier is the fact. That everyone here is a ideal fit in his system………..Small quick receivers,a rocket throwing QB, and a HB that has a great all around game…..

Kinda scary

How both Forte and Taylor can compliment Martz’s system so well…good RBs with decent/great pass catching ability.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jun 25, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Excellent post.

Great research and very well put together.

However, before we can speculate on how he’ll improve our “overall offense” we’d need to see more than just passing numbers. Basically, how’d the rushing game do, what about interceptions, etc from B.M. (Before Martz) to year one A.M. (Anno Martzino).

SOLID!

Sometimes the masses need to have things beaten into their heads to get it… Martz is an offensive genius!!!

Int and Sacks allowed for SFO and DET (can't find STL that far back)

Interceptions were fairly consistent, or went down, which is really good. Sacks allowed increased for both. But the bigger picture is:

All of the offenses improved.. overall team records went from 5-11 to 3-13 for Detraoit and 5-11 to 7-9 for San Fran. So, Martz will not save this team, but he will make them more fun to watch. I hope Cutler can figure out the system and work well within it, but I hope more that Lovie’s side of the ball stays healthy and potent.

by DisCUBbobulated on Jun 25, 2010 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

For me it's all about the line play

if that is improved even if only slightly, this offense can be more explosive and succesful. As always the turnovers need to be cut way down, and I still have a feeling we might see the D trying to put the fear back in the league how successful they’ll be in doing that is anyone’s guess.

I'm with you on the D.

I look at it this way – if the O was working with Turner and Orton again, I think we’d all be expecting the D to be the focal point of the team – Url back, Peppers on board, C. Harris back, T. Harris hopefully repaired, etc.

With Martz and Cutler, though, it could be a wicked O and a wicked D. Can’t wait for Week 1!

by oripunk3485 on Jun 25, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Wicked and wiley

should be the offenses’ motto this season. With that said, red-zone turnovers or lack thereof, will be the deciding factor on whether this team makes the playoffs or not.

but I hate when people argue a point without using statistics. Might as well just be slinging poo at each other.

As far as why he was let go- my best guesses are philosophical differences, and power struggle/rubbed the HC wrong with his seemingly arrogant attitude.

Here's a stat or two for you...

In 2005 the Lions were 25th in rushing, before Martz. In 2006, the Lions were 31st in rushing and in 2007, they were 32nd in rushing, during Martz.

In 2007, the 49ers were 27th in rushing (pre-Martz)and in 2008, with Martz, they were 27th.

However, we do agree that Martz will make the Bears better and I think there is much more talent on this Bear’s offense than in SF or Det. I think the 2010 Bears offense will be something we have not ever seen in Chicago; a real explosive offense. Martz has some true short yardage threats in Olsen, Forte, and Taylor that were lacking in SF and Det. Add the best corps of WRs he’s had to work with since leaving STL and Martz will have success in Chicago. Lastly, the Bears D will benefit because the offense is likely to score a ton of points, which will take pressure off the D to score and get take-aways, but just hold the opposition to FGs.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!

by LostInSTL on Jun 25, 2010 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Something has got to give

Lovie still thinks this team is a running team, and Martz is Martz. I hope they find some kind of balance between his ego/offense and some modern-day conservatism by running the ball effectively.

In Detroit, he failed to do that efficientely because Jones only averaged 3.8 ypa in two years and never got above 200 carries for each season (only 153 in ‘07). I would like to see him exploit Forte and Tayor similarly to what Gore did in ’08- 240 carries, 1036 yards, 6 TDs, and a 4.3 ypa. I believe that’s what will benefit the team the most, rather then let the defense tee-off on Cutler and cause the turnovers that have come to epitomize Martz’s offense.

So we (I'm using "we" as the royal plural for a sense of solidarity)

must be smarter than the GM’s of three other teams. I’ll give you the Lions but….. Oh, and he WAS a HC so…. I’m not saying he won’t work but to call me an idiot for being a naysayer (and I am) is a bit harsh. There are obviously NFL professionals who agree with me that he may not be as great as advertised. The man did sit out a season from coaching completely. Offensive geniuses would get snatched up quicker than that don’t you think? Oh and concrete data ignores the human element completely. What if the guys a complete ass who alienates everyone? And if you think that doesn’t matter than who’s the idiot one with philosophical differences? I hear you, I just disagree, that’s all.

I wasn't referring to you as an idiot

Just in general when fans use their personal, emotional opinion that they acquired from the very biased media, and use it as a baseless argument. Those are all good points on why he hasn’t worked out in other places, and I’ll add that his inability to run the ball or dedicate himself to trying more often has probably gotten him fired from those places, like LostInSTL stated so eloquently.

Was fired......

in the offseason after the 07 season due to some players complaining about the offense being unbalanced and pass-happy. The Lions proved they made the right move by becoming the first 0-16 team in league history, failing utterly on offense as well as defense.

As for the 49ers, Martz was let go after Singletary was named head coach because because “The Samurai” wanted a more balanced, ball-control style offense. So the Niners dropped Martz over football philosophy.

But I still don’t think your and idiot……… :)

In SF it was a philosophical difference with Singletary

Singletary wanted an offense that ran the ball more. Ironically, the 49ers are trying to improve their passing game because the run first ball control offense Singletary wanted does not fit today’s NFL game.

He will help us get to the Superbowl !!!

All three teams in the North that can get 400 yards in a game and still lose . The lack of a power back will derail the three headed monster ? Gerhart will be a bigger all around factor than Percy was . He is a work horse and won’t need a Probowl to caress his ego .
Martz loves small WR’s and that plays right ntoour hands . Do you really want Jared hitting Cutler 45 times a game .
Doctor Gothic suggests that Cutler sees the vision guys at Nike . The night blindness thing will become a factor when Brett retires and ABC & ESPN alow your team to play on TV again !!
The O-line that Tice puts together will be the key to Cutlers health . I heard Martz & Cutler are already at odds ???

Chicago played more night games than the ViQueens did last season, even with Favre....

And we still play 4, at least, this season. Yes, Minnesota is scheduled for 7 because of Favre-lust. But that didn’t stop us from getting 4 of them, anyways. Hey……what happened last year when the Bears and Vikings met in prime-time? I don’t remember…was it……it was! Jared Allen couldn’t get past Chris Williams, and Jay Cutler hit Devin Aromashodu for an OT TD, right? Well, theres another one of those prime time games this year. Right around week 15. Peppers will be waiting :)

And how many times did Allen get past Chris Williams last year? that would be Zero, wouldn’t it?

And you really believe that the Back-up RB will be a bigger factor than Percy Harvin? With Favre throwing? Really?

The trend shows the first year is a struggle

So this next season, I’m not hoping for too much, but with the second season, things improve, come 2011, I have much higher hopes. But the big part of Martz system succeeding is a good, or better yet great offensive line, and a good bunch of receivers. Our O-line will need to step up if we want this too work. Secondly, there was a reason Martz only real success came in St. Louis, and it was largely named Holt and Bruce, without those guys, plus Faulk was a nice target as well, that offense would have struggle similar to Detroit and San Fran. So if we can get our receivers to keep improving, there is hope.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

I lived in St. Louis in 1998 and 1999, so I saw this all up close. You are completely missing that Mike Martz was not the only change Vermiel made. The most notable other one, for purposes of your point, was that they switched QB from Tony Banks to Trent Green/Kurt Warner (both new to the team in 1999). Oh yeah, and they trade with the Colts for some running back named Marshall Faulk.

I surely hope you are not trying to say that upgrading your QB position from Tony Banks (who went on to play badly for another team, Redskins I think, before washing out of league) to Green/Warner — both great QBs, Green would have been as successful as Warner if he hadn’t had those injuries — and then also put Marshall Faulk in the backfield, had nothing to do with the improvement that year, that it was all Mike Martz. That’s what you implied. Come on.

by puddnhead on Jul 2, 2010 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

Yea thats only one team though . The other teams also ....

….. had a dramatic improvement with predominantly the same players as the season before . With the Lions he did it with John Kitna and with the 49ers he did it with Alex Smith , JT O’Sullivan and Shaun Hill . And while it wasn’t all Martz he was a large part of the answer in all these teams rises .

This Bears defense, as constructed, needs to play with an early lead.

So that the Cover-2 four man rush can pin their ears and go after the QB. Leading the charge is new acquired Julius Peppers.

If Martz can help the defense get that early 14-0 lead… then Peppers and Co will have the opposing offenses in more predictable passing situations = sacks and turnovers.
