Bowman Island

                            49052354_medium

Bears fans have high hopes for Zach Bowman in 2010 after his solid 09 campaign where he picked off 6 balls. Bowman has good ball instincts and breaking speed that resembles Eagles CB Asante Samuel.  In most stints last season, Bowman showed the potential to be a ball hawking CB that takes away a side of the field because of the possibility of a turnover.

The Bears don't play Man to Man that much, so along with the opposing team #1 receiver, I will also add the opposing team starting QB since they have to be able to beat Bowman in the zone defense that the Bears are showing.  Here is a week to week of the opposing QB's and #1 receiver Bowman will be up against, and what to expect from in these games.

Star-divide

Week 1 Vs Lions (Matthew Stafford/Calvin Johnson)

Right off the back Bowman will be tested against one of the better receivers in the game in Calvin Johnson.  On the flip side of there's is the opportunity to take advantage of a young QB in Stafford. I could see Stafford forcing the ball to Johnson, to where Bowman will have plenty of opportunities to make plays on the ball.

Week 2 at Cowboys (Tony Romo/Miles Austin)

This could possibly be his toughest challenge of the season. Miles and Romo have a good connection with each other, and Austin size and speed could could be too much for Bowman to handle which will result in Rod Marinelli using bracket coverage to help out.  However, Romo is Farve like meaning he has a penchant for throwing bone headed interceptions, so Bowman has a opportunity.

                                     Nfl-cowboys-raiders_medium

Week 3 vs Packers (Aaron Rodgers/Greg Jennings)

This could be a good match up for Bowman, whose athletcism and quickness can bother Jennings to the point that Rodgers will look to the other side of the field.  You also have to take into account that Rodgers crumbles when he has the slightest pressure around him, and he doesn't trust his own arm (50+ sacks tells me that you don't).  It would only take Bowman to get one pick off Rodgers while attempting to get Jennings the football, and Rodgers will immediately look to the other side of the field because we know how much Rodgers hate getting points deducted off his QB rating.

Week 4 at Giants (Eli Manning/Steve Smith)

Eli is a crafty veteran QB, but at times he can be prone to mistakes.  Steve Smith is good, but I wouldn't say he is special to the point he presents a match up problem.  Great opportunity for Bowman to get his name out there in a Sunday night prime time game.

                                            12-24-staten-island-giants_medium

Week 5 at Panthers (Matt Moore/Steve Smith)

Unlike the Steve Smith of last week, this Steve Smith is still crafty and is still one of the elite receivers in the game. Depending on where Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen is at in their development, I could see this being a long day for Bowman who could struggle with Smith's speed and strength.

Week 6 Vs Seahawks (Matt Hasselback/T.J. Houshmadnzadeh)

This could be a good game for Bowman or a tough one.  Matt Hasselback is a different type of QB than Seneca Wallace and he in the past has had good games against the Bears.  I just don't see T.J. Housh getting shutdown this time around.

Week 7 vs Redskins (Donovan McNabb/Santana Moss)

McNabb picked on Bowman last year and paid for it.  This might be one of those games where Bowman takes away a side of the field by because of the threat of a turnover.

Week 9 at Buffalo (Trent Edwards/Lee Evans)

I could see this being a good battle, but Bowman wins because Edward is throwing the football.

                                            Leeevans_medium

Week 10 vs Minny (Brett Farve/Sidney Rice)

Farve like Cutler is notorious for throwing picks so Bowman will have his chances in this game against Farve #1 target  Rice.

Week 11 At Dolphins (Chad Henne/Brandon Marshall)

He's going to get victimize in this game.  I truly believe Marshall is one of the few receivers that can't be shutdown.

Week 12 vs Eagels (Kevin Kolb/DeSean Jackson)

Expect a lot of soft, bracket, and cover 3 coverage in this game to neutralize the speed of Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.  Bowman won't get that much opportunities to make plays on the ball this week.

                                Desean-jax_medium

Week 13 at Lions (Matthew Stafford/Calvin Johnson)

This could be a week where Bowman struggles as by this time Stafford should be establishing himself as one of the best up and coming QB's in the game.  That and Megatron is a bad mix to be throwing at Bowman on the road.

Week 14 vs Patriots (Tom Brady/Randy Moss)

If this was 2007 there should be reason to worry.  Since Brady and Moss record breaking season in 07, Moss has lost a step, and Brady have found a new favorite target in Wes Welker.  The field conditions and elements should neutralize whatever left of Moss speed.  Advantage Bowman.

Week 15 at Vikings (Brett Farve/Sidney Rice)

The Metrodome is always a tough place to play, this could be a game where he struggles.

Week 16 vs Jets (Mark Sanchez/Braylon Edwards)

I could see Bowman having success against the inconsistant Sanchez and Edwards. I don't see a run oriented team like the Jets passing crazy in soldier field in late December.

                                     4107097825_45ecdd89b6_medium

Week 17 at Packers (Aaron Rodgers/Greg Jennings)

By this time Bowman should have develop a reputation around the league as a ball hawking CB. Bowman should develop the ability to take away a side of the field because of his ball skills.

Austin is banging Kim Kardashian now.

So hopefully he will start to have brain farts during the game like Romo did when he was with Jessica Simpson…

This is exciting

I heard something like Bowman would have been a first round selection if there weren’t injury concerns coming out of college. He’s definitely going to have the ability to prove that if he stays healthy playing against this strong lineup of opposing WRs. He’s shown flashes of greatness and I’m excited to see that come out after having a full season under his belt.

He's definately got the talent and skill set to be a Pro Bowler

He’s a natural a ball-hawk who probably has a realistic shot at double-digit INTs this year…

Great post

Except, as much as I dislike the Patriots, I have to believe that the Brady-Moss combo is still potent enough with Moss’s size to beat Bowman. Other than that, I’m excited to see what Bowman can do against the #1 receivers of the league playing on the left side of the Defense. Though, he’s not gonna get many breaks with Randy Moss, Austin, Jennings twice, Marshall, Smith, Jackson, and Calvin Johnson twice.

In his defense, most CB's struggle against Megatron.

He’s one of the receivers I mention along with Marshall that can’t be shutdown.

Well...

Maybe not absolutely “can’t be shut down”. I mean, with what Darelle Revis did last year, he would have a pretty good chance. But yeah.

I see a few things that will determine Bowman's success...

1. The play of T Harris up the middle-If Tommie can generate pressure up the middle causing more low-arc sideline throws (or high arc lobs down the middle), Bowman can play from the inside out and undercut the throws. IMO, this is Bowman’s most comfortable style (like the pic above).

2. The health of Bowmans legs-If the Bears front 7 can be the stabilizing force against the run and short yardage pass game and keep the non-coverage contact to a minimum for Bowman, then his knees should hold up for his primary duty as CB, coverage.

3. Rod Marinelli-If Rod can be more than a placeholder for the defensive coordinator and adjust the Tampa2 to be successful, rather than nostalgically ineffective (I call that the catch and release philosophy), then Bowman will be put in the position to be more than just the next surgical pincushion we now call Peanut Tillman.

Bowman has the skills to be great in this defense, but he is not a pure man-to-man or “island” type-cover guy. He could become one, but he has focused his learning on the Cover-2 and that is how he can have success this season. We’ll see…

I hope Hot Rod runs a more attack defense like Rivera did.

I love watching aggressive defenses, blitz the hell out of the quarterback and make him make quick decisions.

by Da Sassage on Jun 29, 2010 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

It's a huge Catch 22!

The question you both seem to be posing (and I would as well) seems to be “Is Marinelli going to be just a sock puppet for Lovie, or will man-up, grab his rocks and run some aggressive, Rivera-style defense?”

Well, that dilemma is just a catch 22 for Hot Rod. If he acts like the Bears version of Lambchop to Lovie Smith’s Shari Lewis, then the team stands a good chance of looking at the playoffs from the outside in. But if he cups his berries and runs the defense his own way, then……well, we all saw what happened to Rivera. Smith took all the glory, and Rivera was left without a job AFTER LEADING THE DEFENSE BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND!!!!!!!!!

What real option does Hot Rod have? The only hope he really has of actually having a job next season is the run around with Lovie’s hand up his heinie and hope that, even though the exact same system that has help the Bears decline in the defensive rankings 3 straight years, and that helped the Bears to allow the 6th most posts in team history in ’09, will somehow return to Rivera-led form with the addition of Julius Peppers, Major Wright and Corey Wooten.

Otherwise, he’s pretty much screwed.

Not so sure about the catch 22...

but I do see your point. I could frame it this way:

Marinelli is “lambchop” and the Bears defense is mediocre enough to earn Lovie a one way ticket back to Texas. New HC probably does not retain Rod.

Marinelli is not “lambchop” and the defense rises to respectability and gets the Bears to a playoff berth. Then I see 2 possibilities:

1. Marinelli gets little credit, but retains DC job with Bears.

2. Marinelli gets much credit and is offered another HC/DC position.

All in all I see Rod having much more to lose by simply being a puppet for Lovie and almost nothing to lose by being his own guy. Honestly, I see Marinelli as more like Mike Tice than Ron Rivera. They will always have a job as a position coach/consultant regardless of their success as a coordinator/head coach.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!

by LostInSTL on Jun 30, 2010 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Seems kinda right, until you.....

remember the last guy who wasn’t “lambchop” for Lovie. Ron Rivera wasn’t Lovie’s sock puppet, and ended up a linebackers coach for the San Diego Chargers, Remember? And Rivera’s defenses got us to the playoffs in ’05 and the Super Bowl in ’06. After the SB, Rivera was chopped (who cuts their DC loose after your D is 2nd one year and 5th the next?) and the defense went quickly south ever since.

I think Marinelli could end up with the same end result if he bucks Lovie’s wishes and runs the D his way.

As to your last sentence. Rivera actually falls right in line there, too. He fell back on his experience as a LB coach after the Big Mistake. But I get your point. Respect.

Agreed...

but IMO, the decline in ability makes the coaching that much more important because the Bears are not likely to get much more in the way of talent before the season.

all talent eventually declines, some more quickly than others (see THarris), so it is incumbent on the GM to keep the talent flowing in. In that the Bears have had, shall we limited success.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!

by LostInSTL on Jul 2, 2010 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed....

But that has little to do with the point that Rivera presented a dominant defense and got canned because he wasn’t Lovie’s sock puppet. I am not suggesting that coaching is the only factor.

But then again, maybe if the new kids had been properly coached and placed…….hello Manning, Anderson, Harrison, Gilbert, Melton, Payne, Afalava, Graham, Vasher, and on and on………..that the decline would have happened? It’s funny how Tommie Harris, Nathan Vasher, and Mark Anderson were all dominant in ‘06 and disappoint ever since. Could Rivera have motivated Harris? Could he have continued to coach up Anderson and Vasher? We’ll never know. I can’t say that philosophy is the issue, but then again, it is a bit of an assumption to say that it isn’t, as well.

The only thing that is certain is that the Bears defense has been declining since Rivera left, and age and injury aren’t the only contributing factors, either. Every team deals with age and injury. Few deal with a Head Coach shucking a DC who is producing the leagues best all around defense over philosophical reasons.

I don’t want to overemphasize Rivera’s lost…….but I also think it’s a disservice to underemphasize it, as well. A lot of factors have a hand in this. But they almost all trace back to Smith and Angelo.

If you want to place the bulk of the blame for the Bears' failures recently

on Smith and Angelo, be my guest, they deserve it. But I am not sure how much better the defense would have been if Rivera had been running the last few years as the talent just was not there.

by lookingdeadred on Jul 3, 2010 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

That's where.....

the real question lies. The talent in ’07 and ’08 was nearly identical to ’06. Was the decline due to coaching? Was it due to injury? Was it due to talent? Know way to know. But I think, in all honestly, that it was a combination of the three.

Yeah, he was a big surprise last year and with Peanut being injured alot last year, he could be one of the keys to the D’s resurgence this year. Really like how aggressive he is and he really made a lot of big plays in 09. I just hope the pass rush really comes through as well as it would really help the DB’s out.
