Monday Morning Musing: Are you drinking the Chicago Bears "Kool-Aid" yet?

With the recent lack of news, other than the extremely high levels of optimism coming from Halas Hall, I've been woderning--how many of us have already bought into the 2010 season in full force, and how many can't fight the lingering doubts history has forced them to use to dull their expectations.

The poll results will be incorporated into my article on Thursday afternoon, so make your answers count, people! And tell us why you feel the way you do in the comments! They're my favorite!

Poll
How "bought-in" to the success of the 2010 Bears are you? (1-5, 5 is the highest)
5-This team is going to dominate fools and burn faces off.
137 votes
2-I feel good, but I'm a little wary--can it be as good as promised?
341 votes
3-I have no idea--this could go either way.
239 votes
1-In a perfect world if everything goes right, they'll be fine. But that's not happening.

no way , bye lovie!

Dear Loyal Readers,

I have no faith in this current Bears administration. I know they signed Julius Peppers, Brandon Manuamuela, and Chester Taylor, but the Packers and Vikings are too tough. We have all done this before! I know Jay Cutler is a good quarterback, but he proved last year that he can’t produce under pressure. That said, Mike Martz is a great offensive coordinator when given the talent. but i still think it is a too big of a proposition to think playoffs or Super Bowl. We definetely need a new coach. Let Lovie Smith finish out the year, and get himself fired, unless they win BIG , and hire Mike Martz as the Head Coach in 2011. We also have Rod Marinelli and he wasn’t a very good coach at all in DET, but he really didn’t have the personel with ther Lions. I am tired of all this hope every year, and then we suck, and have to break down what happenned. I know that’s sports, but not the proud franchise that is the Chicago Bears.

Tired of the hope?

Welcome to fandom… Until the games are played all any of us have is hope.

No one knows anything for sure, Saints fans hope their team can get back to a SB, Lions fans hope their team can keep improving, and Vikings fans hope the judge keeps their two cheaters on the field another year.

Bears fan in a Cleveland jersey... clearly some confusion.

Maybe he needs the help of a good Analrapist.

Well, and his profile says Bulls fan...

maybe his #23 Lebron jersey is some sort of existential metaphor for Lebron coming to Chicago.

Could be.

I was just hoping you guys would get the “Analrapist” thing, or it would have looked really, really weird.

Sold on "3"

Although, I’m an eternal Bears optimist I’m in a wait-and-see-approah, cause I don’t entirely trust their red-zone offense yet. I believe the defense will be back in the top-12 in almost every catergory based on Peppers, Wright, and added depth at CB.

I don't think I'm ever NOT drinking the kool-aid

Every season, EVERY SEASON, I drink the kool-aid and expect more than I should. I have to stop reading Official Bears news releases from OTAs and such, it’s always good news, always bright and sunny, and full of itself.

if we get consistent o-line play...

then give me a reason as to why we can’t win the division?

If our o-line is suspect, we’ll win 7 games at best.

I'd question the entire statement:

Brian Urlacher has the immune system of a hamster
What the hell does this statement even mean? Does Urlacher constantly get sick? If so, is his perfomance inhibited by that? Does a hamster have a weak immune system?

Tommie Harris’s unwillingness to work hard
Because something has been one way in the past, it will forever be that way? Is Tommie currently unwilling to work hard? If so, how do you know this?

Jay Cutler threw 26 INTs last year
…therefore the Bears can’t win the division this year?

We have 0 proven WRs
…therefore the Bears can’t win the division this year?

Matt Forte may be the new Curtis Enis
Playing RB with an injured leg behind a terrible OL in 2009 means he may be the new Curtis Enis? LOL

The O-Line has given us no reason it could be consistently good
New LT, surgery on injured C, new RT, new run-blocking TE, and new OL coach. The OL, while terrible last year, should certainly be average this year.

We need to mention this in a Chris Harris thread. I crack up thinking of him walking into the Bears locker room and saying to the guys, “You’re not going to believe what the fans are talking about…” :-D

Always on "Da Sauce"

I’m gone use the old cliche’, there’s too much “parity” in the league. There’s no one team that you can pick to straight dominate. So that make the Bears chances as good as any.

2010 outlook

I think the division can definitely be won. But somehow I don’t think It’ll happen. Just too many question marks for me as a fan to say they’ll be a great team. Didn’t address the OL, backup QB looks shaky at this time, D needs to make big improvement. All that said, I look forward to every season (even the pre-season games) I just think we need a new coaching staff in order to be successful.

June is the best time to be a Bears fan.

Im not gonna make the same mistake this year of getting my hopes up in the offseason only to see them crushed once the reagular season gets under way. I have come to the realization this year that the team is in the middle of a rebuilding period. Look at the facts:
1. The offensive line has shown flashes of talent but is unproven.
2. They have 3 great position coaches in Mike Tice, Mike Martz, and Rod Marinelli but Marinelli is the only one that has been with the team more than a couple months.
3. Its a new offense being implimented, and everyone who knows the offense says it takes at least 2 years to really get a good understanding of it.
4. Its gonna be the third D-Coordinator in 3 years

To me all the signs point towards a rebuilding season. We’ve got a franchise QB, a new (and brilliant) O-Coordinator, a couple of great position coaches, and some veteran leadership. All that is needed is to fill some gaps on the offensive line and the secondary, as well as form some cohesiveness. I think next year will be the year we retake the NFC North. (assuming Lovie and JA get canned)

I’m not sure what to think.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

Thing is:

I don’t know how much a “successful” season helps or hurts them long-term.

You can’t win 14 games and then fire Lovie/Angelo. Well. you “can”, but not without endless amounts of crap.

Also… I don’t trust Martz’s system, this line and going against guys like Allen, Suh or the Williams boys.

Who knows though? I’ve been wrong before. Just bring on training camp, I’m ready to get excited about football.

I do feel good but

in a hopeful kind of way. Player wise there is surely some positive “signs” if you will with some of the signings, certainly seem to be some upgrades. I’m with alot of you too on the coaching and or management. Tice seems like at least right now to have pumped some folks up, maybe Rod is in his niche now though he wasnt to fired up about the move, and well Smith is just Smith along with the other knucklehead they call Angelo that sticks his nose into stuff he has no control over(NFLPA stuff). So yeah….I’m cautiuosly optimistic…..really optimistic that Philips,Angelo and Smith just keep to their ways and it’ll be see ya’ at end of season..finally.

i believe this team will dominate the fools but not so much against the quality opponents. i would just be really happy if we could roundhouse kick the queens and the pack down this year.

Call me a Polyanna

You know, even with all the question marks, they just may click!?!?
The “D” has Healthy Leaders back, Top Quality additions and that Old Swager again :)
The big questions are the OL and the “Complex” new Martz scheme.
Except for a little tinkering: … “Follow the magic pea as we move the shells around”, …and a few new unproven rookie or redshirt faces, we are basically the same sad OL.
The rest of the offense is learning a brand new play book and unquestionably and universally agreed upon, … most complex play book in the NFL.
One negative that maybe a positive, … Jay couldn’t possibly throw as many picks again(?)
A Positive? That Cutler has played with this reciever group for a year?
But hey!
So What?
Me and the Old Lady have played together for over 37 years and there are just going to be certain levels of preformance that will be beyound our skills, … LOL!!
I am “Cautiously Optimistic”,
… the same good feeling I get when I “goose” the old gal and holler: “Go Bears!” :)

by pbanachi on Jun 28, 2010 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

And I am pessimistically hopeful.

I find myself listening to the same hype I bought into last year. “With our new big name free agent signing we’ll be a much improved team over last year. We’re just a piece of the puzzle away from greatness and this move should put us over the top. Etc, etc, etc…” We look better on paper this year and I want to be excited and feel some momentum heading in, just like last year, right up until we faced Greenbay and the wheels sorta fell of the bus.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.

+1...

I see the offense as having some great wide open potential. There are some questions in my mind about the short yardage game (run or pass) and the interior o-line blocking, but I am almost optimistic about the offense. The ST are going to continue to shine, so no issues there.
And then there is the defense. There are just too many questions for me to drink that Kool-aid. Is Marinelli going to be any good at a job he’s never had before? Is Urlacher physically ready for the season? Can Pisa/Tillman stay healthy enough to be effective? Is Tommie Harris done? Can M Harrison be more than just big? Is Anderson a good fit at DE? Can Gilbert contribute? Is Wright going to be the answer at FS? The list goes on, but until we see how this defense shapes up, I’m not sold that the defense can hold up all season.
My current projection is that the offense is as good as advertised and the defense is still a mess. Lovie is done at the end of the season, as I see things now. I am preparing for a 9-7 season, missing the playoffs at the very end, and Lovie being fired. But hope springs eternal and there is a long way to go before opening day. I am willing to just wait and see, but like JD, I’m pessimistically hopeful!

Obviously there are big questions at several positions,

and they all need to break right for the season to go the way we’d like it to. The bigger problem that I see is lack of depth. The loss of one or two starters anywhere except tight end would be almost devastating. I think hoping for everything to fall into place and have the whole team stay healthy is a bit of a stretch.

3 because of the lines

I am completely confident in this team top to bottom. Exception being the lines. Problem is, IMHO, the lines are the most important pieces to the puzzle.

I don’t know if the O-line can protect Jay or provide running lanes. And I don’t know if the D-line can provide consistent a pass rush or stop the run.

What I do know, is if the O-line can protect Jay consistently and provide running lanes, sky’s the limit! We are too talented at WR (I don’t care what the so called experts say) to not succeed in this system. And our RBs will flourish, if they can get the ball in open space (blocking provided) as planned in this offense.

What I do know, is if the D-line can create havoc with a steady pass rush and maintain their gaps in the running game. Our questionable secondary will not have to play above their heads, for the team to be successful. And our immensely talented LB’s will be enabled to do what they do best… Make plays (big hits & ball strips)!

On the other side of the coin, if the lines fail to do their respective jobs. Everything falls apart!

Jay Cutler has a high turnover ratio and in all likely hood, a strained relationship with Martz . The WR’s will be criticized for not being experienced enough and we’ll hear that “No true #1 WR” garbage and Forte will be called a one year wonder. While Chester Taylor will be called over the hill.

For the other side of the ball. Lovie & Marinelli will be under heavy fire and fired (rightfully so). The secondary will be among the worst in the league. And we here at WCG, will likely rip Tommie Harris until we’re blue in the face.
