Actually, the article states that the Bears free agents who signed with the team are big winners, not the team per se.

Not sure if anyone is interested in the following news but I figured I post anyway
From ESPN New York
New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has been hospitalized and is in serious condition, according to multiple reports.
According to the reports, Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4, was taken to the hospital after emergency crews responded to his home Monday night.

Update:
George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning, a person close to the longtime New York Yankees owner told The Associated Press. LINK

Three Keys to D: Giving $20 million to Peppers
I try not to equate the dollar amount to sign a free agent to the players productivity. You certainly can make the argument that there is a correlation, but there is also a thing of “supply and demand”.
Peppers was the best DE in 2010 FA and has consistently been a pass rusher for the better part of his career. The Bears and several other teams lacked a “consistent” pass rusher in a league where a pass rusher is a top 3 position on a football team.
Negotiations started and the dollar amount that outbid all other suitors was $20 million+. Is that an extreme amount of money to pay? Yes! But, did the Bears need to bring in a player at the position? Yes. And they went after the player with the HIGHEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS.
That doesn’t come cheap.
What Brad Biggs needed to question was not the price of Peppers contract, because what level of productivity would be worth $20 million dollars? 8 sacks? 15? I don’t think so…
… What he needed to ask was does the addition of Peppers increase 1.) the number of pressures on the opposing QB and 2.) the total number of sacks in 2010 in comparison to 2009.
Price has no bearance on a difference maker if it improves your teams production.

I don’t necessarily think that 15 sacks, or even the total number of sacks…even though usually they will be parallel with this next bit, but wins will determine worth.
If we look back on the next 2 or 3 seasons, and find ourselves having sat at 11-5 or better, I would consider the Peppers signing a success, regardless if he had 2 or 20 sacks, and the rest of the team as well. That’s what Briggs needed to ask… do we as a team win more games because of Peppers
He's a 300-pound man who moves like a defensive back. That's what you're dealing with." — Bears coach Lovie Smith on DE Julius Peppers

Exactly.
That’s my point above, BN. How does he improve your team’s overall production?

IMO: The Bears secondary will be the biggest "question mark" in 2010
Over the past 5 years, the Bears have been able to win football games with average (Orton) to subpar (Grossman) QB play, inconsistent offense, and stout run defense.
What has always impeded their production has been the pass defense.
Although the defensive line has had it’s dry spells at times, the secondary has been on the decline since 2006. Injuries played a big part in that, but the depth has made that area an ever growing eye sore.
I am hoping that both Bowman and Tillman can remain relatively healthy for the better part of the season and that the use of depth underneath them (Graham, Turrenne, Jennings) doesn’t have to be utilized.
Also, I have big hopes for Daniel Manning and Major Wright. One (or both) really needs to step up and be the players that JA and Smith projects them to be. They have tremendous speed and athleticism which would be so useful to a division with 3 really prominent passing offenses.
Semper Fi
If the pass rush is not improved, the DB play will not be either, CHarris or no CHarris.
And the key to an improved pass rush (and DL play in general) is not Peppers but THarris. He needs to be close to what he was just a few years ago for the Bears to be a good defense again.

How the heck
can Turenne win the 3rd CB job when Graham is better, and has had an excellent off season? I guess good depth is a great problem to have.

Woodney was WAY overrated last year
I did see some promise, but I’d like to see him play against someone other than 4th quarter preseason scrubs. Of which he couldn’t cover.

No, he played with the 2s a lot.
He made some great tackles… unfortunately is was all on WRs that had beaten him on routes.
I don't remember him in any preseason 1st halfs
I hope he is a player, he has nice size and physicality for the position

I thought the same thing
Would it be that Graham is the #1 nickel and Turenne would be #3 CB?
Strike two.

I agree.I don't see how an undersized CB in the Nickel helps your pass defense.
But, wasn’t RMJ in 2006 like 5’9"?
