Bears Draft RB Harvey Unga in 7th Round of Supplemental draft.
Someone will have to be cut to fit him on the 80-man roster. Wolfe and Bell might want to dust off their resumes.

Not only will someone have to be cut,
but don’t we forfeit a draft pick next year?

Does that mean no 7th round Olineman???
Maybe JA can trade away a 1st rounder so we can still get our man in the 7th.

Very nice!
He might look good enough to make the team. He’s got something none of the current RBs on the roster have; real size and a blue-collar style.
Jeff from Cleveland wrote- I've figured out the moral of the story: Stay in school. Wade: 3 years at Marquette, Bosh: 1 year at Georgia Tech, the kid from Akron: no college. The most educated guy convinced his dumber friends to come play on his team for less money.
Well...
He does have a good record as a pass catcher, too… My first thought was “#3 or 4 RB AND our starting FB” but I have seen a couple knocks on his blocking strength. Apparently he has good technique but not enough “pop” to play FB. Guess we will see. Either way, he is a tough between the tackles runner who can catch and at least delay a blitzer….So why do we have Wolfe again?

Short yardage
will be his speciality. Even if he doesn’t fit well into the scheme, he’ll provide the Bears an option on the goaline and 3rd/4th and short.

Looks comfortable out of the backfield and knows how to catch the football and create a play out in the flat. Now, he isn’t an elite receiver, will struggle to adjust to the football off his frame and isn’t the most natural pluckers. Was split out at times in the BYU offense, but isn’t a real impressive route runner when asked to separate from linebackers in man. However, he does have a bit of a feel of where to sit down into coverage and find throwing lanes toward the quarterback.
Impression
He’s built like a fullback, but he strikes me more as a single-back type runner in the NFL. Isn’t real dynamic and isn’t a guy who I want starting for me as an every-down type runner in the NFL. But as a physical No. 2 guy who can win in short yardage and goal line sets and wear down opposing front sevens, he’s your man.
He could be a fullback too…what’s Martz got up his sleeve here?

probably nothing.
It was probably just a JA Lovie pick that he had no imput in.
Another question mark?
Big, but not fleet of foot. Goal line? Probably Lovie and JA see him as a TE or maybe even a Middle linebacker, LOL!!
Is it just me or does this mob just fall in love with a guys abilities and then spends the next year or so trying to figure if this DB is a WR or this TE is a slot receiver or if the DE is really a DT or if the C is a LG or if the LG is a RT or if the RT is indeed a LT etc. etc. ad nauseum!!
Are you really
complaining about a 7th round pick on this guy? He could be a nice change of pace for Taylor and Forte; his bruising style will fit in well where the Bears struggled mightily- short yardage game.

Value for the Price Paid
I like this move as it only costs the Bears a 7th round. Does he take the place of a fullback or a running back? Or, do the Bears take the chance and try to stash him on the practice squad?
Unga
He might be good competition for an ST spot, but I think he has an uphill battle to make the team. Martz’s playbook is very complicated and he’s joining the team late. Might be a practice squad and activated if someone got hurt. I’ll admit I don’t know all that much about him, but he sounds like a good prospect down the road.
Sounds like Jerry just had to
Like an addict, trying to quit. He just could not stand having ALL the picks next year.
Not real sure what they do with him. Put him on PS and can’t other teams sign him? Put him on the team and it looks like he will struggle to compete.

He voluntarily withdrew from school due to “honor code” – which includes sex, tobacco and alcohol from what I remember. Also his girlfriend withdrew at same time (leading me to believe it was the sex part) but c’mon, who didn’t do those in college. Shoot we have athletes killing each other and shooting up who knows what anymore.
He was expected to have his break out year (3,500 yrds in 3 years) and needs a breakout year? Plus wasn’t he predicted to be a top 10 back or something before this last year.
Finally, 2 thoughts, we have all our picks (knock on wood) except 7th next year. And will we really miss anything with Bell or Wolfe?

I think assuming Wolfe being the odd one out...
is wrong. Bell did ok last year when given the opportunity and had that one big run (his firt NFL touch I think), but Wolfe has embraced ST and turned into the best ST tackler on the team. With where they’ll be on the depth chart, that’s what will make the difference. Bye Khalil. Good pickup for the price.

I don't disagree about Bell
But I’d have trouble saying that Wolfe is a better tackler than Shaw. I could be wrong though…

thumbs up
Seems like a decent pickup to me. A three-time thousand yard rusher in college, physical back who has at least above-average catching ability for a man his size.
Given that we picked him, I am guessing the coaching staff already has plans to cut one of the guys currently on the roster. The Bears might be dumb but I don’t think they are dumb enough to use a supplmenetal 7th rounder on a player they expect to fail to make the squad. So either they saw him as a value worth more than a 7th rounder (who is going to make one of our current backs “no longer needed”), or else something they have seen—or not seen—out of one of our current guys this spring has them worried.
will he stick?
With the liklihood of us carrying 3 QBs, 4 TEs, and 7 WRs this season, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll carry 4 RBs. Forte and Taylor are obviously staying. That leaves Bell, Wolfe, and this new guy battling for that 3rd spot. I think Wolfe sticks because of his Special Teams value (plus Wolfe is really our only change-of-pace back out of the bunch).
Barring a RB injury, I see Unga being stored on the practice squad or on injured reserve.
Change of pace?
He never plays, so I guess we don’t like change of pace, or think it’s not worth it….I do like his ST play though

Whether he makes the team
Or is put on the PS for a season, PLEASE leave this guy at tailback. Don’t put him at TE, or H-back, or Fullback. That’s only diminishing his skillset. He is a very fluid runner and he doesn’t look at all like a 245 lb. man when he has the football in his hands.

Contrary to mythical thought here on WCG, he’ll be gone after training camp is finished. One play does not a running back make.

one play for a bad team in a nothing season.
if he earns it, great, but i expect Unga to replace him. I still like Garrett Wolfe, his repeated ability to come from off of the screen and make a touchdown saving tackle on special teams has endeared him.
Wolfe
has too much upside, speed, and special teams prowess. He makes the roster hands down along with this guy (most likely), Forte, and Taylor.

One possibility is that Wolfe ends up on the PUP list to start the season
He had a very serious injury last year. Because of the lacerated kidney, the Bears could put Wolfe on the PUP list giving them 6 weeks into the season before deciding to cut him, giving an injury settlement, or put him on the active roster if there are injuries to other players.

Payne is close to a lock for making the Rams 53 cut :)
Seems like we got the short end of that trade.
A safety with starting potential for a 7th rounder? Rams will have a good set of safeties with Atogwe and Payne. We traded away a guy in Williams with starting potential for Chris Harris, and traded away another for a 7th round pick. On of these things is not like the other……

Bingo!
Chicago was able to get a 7th round pick for a Safety that the Rams will start and the Bears were going to cut.
The Panthers were able to get a starting caliber linebacker for a safety the Bears will start and the Panthers were going to cut..
I’m not saying that Harris and Payne are equal. But the situations are interesting, and I think speak to the competency of the respective front offices.
Look at what each team in these trades did.
The Rams got a starting player for a pittance.
Carolina got a young linebacker with a ton of potential that many thought would be starting if he wasn’t stuck in the Bears linebacker corps for a player they were going to cut.
The Bears got a pittance for a player that they were going to cut but the Rams will start, and gave away a young linebacker with a bright future for a player that was going to be cut anyways.
Again, I’m not saying that the Bears were robbed, or that I wouldn’t have made either trade. I am just saying that, if you look at the transactions, while the Bears might not have gotten screwed, there seems to be some indications that the Bears didn’t exactly play the game masterfully.

The way I understand it, Harris was going to be cut
but his agent was able to get a bit of value for him instead. Same with Payne… we were going to cut him, and his agent (same agent as Harris) was able to get a bit of value for Payne.
Yeah....
It’s not like I think the Bears got robbed. I was just pointing out something that seemed a bit funny to me. And maybe a bit of an example of the abilities of the respective FOs. The Panthers were able to get a guy, in Williams, that they will be able to start at some point. The Bears were only able to get another 7th round pick for Angelo to throw at another project offensive linemen or wideout. Granted, Harris has more credibility than Payne. But Payne still has starting credibility, and will start in StL.
But it’s not like my panties are in a twist over it. At least the Bears got something for a guy they were going to cut anyways. I just find it funny that the Bears traded away one starting caliber player (Williams) and got Chris Harris and another starting caliber player (Payne) and got a 7th round pick.

I'm totally fine with the Chris Harris trade
Even if he was cut…there’s no certainty that he would’ve signed with the Bears if a better offer was out there.
Besides, I imagine a Chris Harris/FS with Daniel Manning/SS or Major Wright/FS with Chris Harris/SS is a lot better than what we had last year.

I'm more than fine with the Williams/Harris trade.......
Maybe I didn’t make myself entirely clear. I was using the Williams/Harris trade as a comparison. In that trade, we traded away a potential starter for a current starter. In my mind, the Bears and the Panthers both got equal value. The Bears got the more immediate fix, while the Panthers got a long term solution.
In the Payne trade, I see the Rams getting a starting safety for a 7th round pick. To get a starting safety, the Bears gave away a linebacker with a very bright future (IMHO). Now, to be fair, Harris is a lot better safety than Payne. I’m not going to deny that. But I would have thought the Bears could have pulled a 5th rounder for a player with starting cred.
But I’m also not losing any sleep over the issue. It wasn’t that big of a deal, IMO. I was just pointing out something I saw.

Meh...I was hoping for a 6th rounder for Payne
This season has been weird in terms of player value…never would I thought a year ago that Boldin and Marshall would be dealt for 2nd rounders.
Also, I hope Chris Harris is a long term solution himself…the guy is 27 years old; compare that to Darren Sharper who’s pushing 34.
by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jul 17, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions
I actually wasn't surprised by Boldin.....
He’s a 30-year-old (in October) receiver who is tough as nails………but he’s benefited from a pass heavy offense where he was the #2 receiver behind arguably the best receiver in football and with a solid #3 on the field who might be a better receiver than he is (Breaston), and he has been plagued with injuries. We’ll see whether Boldin is the same receiver in Baltimore, but I think he will not be as productive as some expect him to be there. That’s not to say he isn’t a good receiver. He’s about as tough as they come across the middle and has decent hands and speed. But is he a real #1 receiver? I don’t know.
Marshall, on the other hand, was stunning. A second round pick for a guy who is one of the top 5 receivers in the game? I don’t think he’s the second best in the game, as I’ve seen some claim (I’d be hard pressed to place him ahead of Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald or Megatron, who would be my top 3, in that order), but he’s definitely elite. The Dolphins stole Marshall. But that seems to be the way it’s going this off-season. I’m starting to wonder if Owners don’t already believe there will be a lock-out next year, and are undervaluing players because of it.

And yes, I have to believe some team will sign him away if we stash him away with as much interest as he generated. Maybe a 4th RB. I agree with everyone who said Wolfe is too valuable to cut. I just can’t see why a 3rd round pick (even it’s from 07) wouldn’t be useful to this team. Let’s not forget we had a guy calling plays for him who did not kniow what his strengths are. (Let’s run the 5’7" guy betwen the tackles…that only meant I yelled at the TV more) but Unga seems a lot like a Brad Muster type of player-can block, but can run really well between the tackles also.
