Very interesting story about the current battle over Jim Thorpe's remains.

Specialized offseason program referred to as Boot Camp for some NFL players.

I like

That we’re taking a look at the Mizzou kid. Big guy w/ good speed for his size. Four surgeries on the same knee is pretty bad though.

Also Thorpe and the "Boot Camp’ stories were great reads. Pretty amazing how far the NFL has come…

since the days when players readied for training camp by quitting their offseason insurance jobs, giving up cigarettes and losing weight by sitting in steam baths.

The Clayton article has me confused

I knew there were a few battles going on at camp (Roach vs. Tinoisamoa, LG, S and WR), but this is the first I’ve heard of Olsen vs. Clark… Sometimes I think these guys (Clayton) just spew absolute garbage, because they need to fill space.

Maybe I’m wrong.

by rdent4hof on Jul 26, 2010 8:16 AM CDT reply actions

I didn't understand it much myself.

It’s a “battle” if you want to call it that. I see both getting around the same amount of PT though. I’m much more interested in the Roach/P.T. battle and how our safety and o-line situations pan out. I personally like Clayton’s insight, but he lost me on this one.

I agree,

wouldn’t you think if there is a TE battle on the Bears it would be Olsen vs. Manumaleuna? Seems like everything we’ve been seeing and hearing out of Halas Hall makes Clark the odd man out.

I always feel like these national guys (Clayton, Mortenson, etc.) read or hear something from a local report and then just run with it without researching it completely.

by BearFan611 on Jul 26, 2010 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I was confusing, but I get what he is trying to "imply".

John Clayton spoke on ESPN 1000 this weekend and said that he believes that if Greg Olsen is on the Bears roster by week 6…

… He’d be shocked.

He doesn’t see the Bears holding on to a guy who doesn’t fit the offensive philosophy and is in line for a new contract. He thinks the Bears will deal him to a team in need of a TE for a 3rd rd pick in the upcoming draft.

That’s why he thinks Clark vs Olsen is the battle to watch because if Olsen can improve his blocking he might be able to uproot Clark.

I can't see them

trading him for anything less than a 2nd rounder. He would’ve been traded by now, cause they could’ve used the return this season not next season.

What can I say

he’s truly my hero. Plus, last night’s episode he landed a football franchise for LA!

Completely!

Why would a player, for San Diego no less, be involved in that kind of a meeting?

by BearFan611 on Jul 26, 2010 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

To help with selling process

Having a NFL player would only help promote the game in LA, regardless for what team he plays for. He was probably one of Ari’s clients as well.

I would agree, but...

… I think because he really hasn’t made the jump from potential-to-talent just yet and he is in need of a new contract in another year. 3rd round pick would be fair; 2nd rd would be good value (barring he explodes in 2010).

Agree with Chi Marine on this

Clayton’s logic is consistent at least.

If that's the case and the Bears are looking to trade Olsen...

Wouldn’t they want him starting and making plays, as to increase his value?

I think so.

by rdent4hof on Jul 26, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct!

That’s why JD believes that Greg Olsen will be the all-time leader in receptions by any TE in a Mike Martz system.

JD is thinking that the Bears will be wanting to highlight Olsen, then hope that someone is in need of a young TE with potential and try to milk them for—at the very least— a 3rd round pick.

It makes sense to me given the enormous contract for a TE who specializes in blocking and Martz’s history with the position.

This might be too "conspiracy theorist" but

I wonder if, in the back of his mind, Angelo might be thinking Lovie and the whole coaching staff might be history after this season anyway, so keeping Olsen for a more traditional OC next season could make sense. Especially since he is one of the few 1st round picks that Angelo has made that is not a total bust.

I know that most people think, if things tank, both Angelo and Lovie are gone (I don’t necessarily disagree with that) but JA’s contract is still a couple of years longer than Lovie’s and the McCaskey’s might not want to eat that money.

by BearFan611 on Jul 26, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Makes sense to me

I know some do not like Olsen but for a pass catching TE I think he is good. Would hate to lose him and then totally implement a new system next year and miss his skill set for a “blocking” only TE.

by TheMan1 on Jul 26, 2010 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't say it isn't a possibility, but I think it's highly unlikely.

I think that Lovie and JA are “tied to the hip” in terms of responsibility. For all the grievances one might have with Lovie, there is a reasons that management didn’t cut their losses in a year where they spent 100 million in FA. JA’s track record doesn’t absolve him of the mess that has been Chicago Bears football the past three seasons.

I think if you are wooing the interest of a first-rate coach in 2011— given JAs track record and entire body of work (not just this offseason)— why would they want to come in under a GM who hasn’t always done the things that would enable his team to win?

by ChicagoMarine on Jul 26, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see it going either way...

If Lovie is gone and the McCaskey’s don’t completely clean house, it depends on the kind of guy you bring in. If it’s a Jeff Fisher or a Bill Cowher (btw, condolences to him and his family on the loss of his wife) then JA would not be much more than a figurehead at that point. If things turned around with a different coach, then it kind of validates JA might not be that bad and Lovie’s staff(s) just coudln’t develop players.

Personally, if things go South this season, I’d rather see a complete turnover of front office people including Ted Phillips, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let’s hope they play well this season and it becomes a moot point.

What?!?

Did someone say something about a new receiver… Sweet Oden’s Beard, we’re saved. And he’s 6’4", he’s gotta be good. Screw tryouts, screw that 31 other teams passed on him, sign him now he can be our #1. Cut Davis yesterday, Matt Jones is jeebus re-incarnated, and Brandon Riddeau RULEZ!

Kinda ironic

that this kid came from the same school as Justin Gage.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jul 26, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I think he's at least worth a look

Worst case scenario: his injuries have taken their toll and he’s worthless.
Best case scenario: he impresses and we stash him on the PS for future development.

Sure

I mean we gave up on Justin Gage a little too easy…and the guy has sort of made a name for himself in Tenn

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Jul 27, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Ahhhhhh......

you speak to the very foundation of what has come to be known as DMS. This staff has no concept of continuity, or player development. Giving up on a player a t a position and either moving him around the team or around the league, it’s all the same thing. No patience. Sure, once a player has been given enough time to develop and is still stuck in the second or third tier, they should be moved. But the practice here has been to move at the first sign of problems. Hence 20 moves at FS and 20 Moves at SS in 6 seasons. That is utterly ridonkulous………
