Preseason Game 2 Second Half Open Thread-Raiders at Bears

Football has finally returned to Soldier Field. For the first time since December 28, 2009 Chicago Bears fans will get to witness their beloved team in action on their home Week 1 of the preseason in San Diego was wholly unremarkable. A few things stood out, like the tackling ability of rookie Safety Major Wright, but for the most part, we didn't see too much excitement. Tonight should be a different story, at least on the offensive side of the ball. With backup Caleb Hanie out with a shoulder injury, we should see Jay Cutler and company on the field significantly more than the eight plays we saw him last week. WCG prediction: Bears 26- Raiders 10 |

Management don’t seem to think a veteran backup is required and/or feasible (since there’s no chance of displacing Cutler, and they don’t want to sink too much money into one position according to Angelo). Right now, all they need done seems to be someone to fill the 3rd QB slot until Hanie recovers.

i can see
if its money issue with management;
I’m basing a lot of this on an interview the other day where he was signing with the UFL bc no one would give him a shot. I would think that even working second string with the bears would put him in a good spot to stay in the league but now he’s going to the UFL and try to come back next year.
Think it was either money (they’re not willing to guarantee salary, so vet QBs aren’t willing to take a change on being just a camp arm) or else UFL contract.

One thing I want to see us do in the next couple of years while Cutler's in his prime
Is the drafting of a FAST running back. A game changing type of guy. I actually would love to trade for McFadden from OAK if the price was right. He’s been injured a bunch, but if healthy he could be a great fit in this offense.

Some prospects I wouldn't mind us looking at
Mark Ingram, Alabama: 4.4 speed but the kid is a workhorse. And he plays for ‘Bama so that’s a plus. If we’re drafting him, we likely suck in the ’10 season.
Evan Royster, Penn State: I like the kid but I think he’s a clone of Forte, so I don’t see us going after him.
DeMarco Murray, Oklahoma: Big, quick kid, I could see us looking at. Good pass catcher too.
Some fast guys I like are Quizz Rodgers, Oregon State and Noel Devine, WVU
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Royster is a lot like Forte.
As a Bears/PSU fan I’ve loved watching those two guys run the last couple of years.

Our RBs
don’t have very good vision. I realize Forte had a long run, but I’d rather see consistency than peaks and valleys. Bell could’ve walked into the endzone if he cut inside.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Nah I'd rather see a 80 something
yard TD run myself.
Yeah but it worked!
Just last last preseason?
Forte broke one versus the G-men, and was horrible in the games that counted.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Yeah I hear ya
But I just hate the whole “Yeah he ran for 110 yards but if you take away that run for 60 then he only ran for 50 yards” argument. He earned that run by showing the vision you spoke of. Yeah I ‘d like to see more peaks to but I punish him for having a great run because the others weren’t as great.
Yeah but it worked!
Gotcha
I can see a good argument for both sides, but let’s hope he has more of those runs this year.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Right.
What’s important isn’t that he had an 89-yard run… it’s that the very run you’re talking about expressed Forte’s excellent vision.
Forte may not be a premium RB, but it’s not for lack of vision. That’s probably his greatest strength. His inconsistent results has more to do with inconsistent play in front of him, IMO.

You're right.
He had a good preseason game last year and a bad season. Thus, his good preseason game means he’ll suck this year.
Water-tight, that logic.

No
he’s been bad for more than a year. Stats don’t lie. 30 something best RB in the league last season.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
What does that even mean?
“He’s been bad for more than a year.” He had a good rookie year and a bad 2nd year… while injured and playing behind one of the worst lines in the league.

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Aug 21, 2010 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
It means
he’s barely starter material in NFL. I don’t see Charles or Forsett having a problem with having a bad line. Actually, even worse than the Bears. If he manages to have a good year then I’ll happily eat crow.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Throw Gore, Jackson, Benson, Addai, CJ, and AP into the convo.
Their teams all had worse running blocking lines than what Forte had (Bears ranked 19th by FO).
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
I think Forte is better than you're giving him credit for.
… and if there’s one area he excels, it’s his vision.
I think we’ll have to agree to disagree here.

You're probably right
I’m hard on the guy, but he hasn’t done anything remarkable in this league; even his rookie year he failed to manage 4 ypc with a rediculous amount of touches. The line hasn’t been good for sure, but he’s got to find a way to break a tackle once in awhile. I really haven’t seen much of it. I really hope I’m wrong about the guy.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
I'll agree with you there.
I don’t often see him break a tackle… or make many guys miss. This guy needs good blocking and some space to be effective.
i will say the other thing that gives me optimism is I think Forte is a good fit for the offense.

... and on that same chart, you'll see
the Bears ranked 15th in open-field yards, which are attributable more to the RB than the line.
I’m not saying Forte is elite. I’m saying the problems last year had more to do with the line and his injury than his “true talent level.”
We’ll find out this year, one way or the other.

maybe
his vision hurts him at times… always looking for the cut back he gets swallowed in the line when he should just put his head down and push forward. I like him just wish he would sometimes bull ahead instead of just getting clobbered by 7 guys at once.
Could be.
I prefer the “patient” types, but sometimes maybe it’s better to just dive into the line instead of waiting for a hole that’ll never open to…. open.

Not sure
He’s more of a one cut runner, so I don’t believe his vision is great. I’d like to see him cut it off tackle a little, rather than try to pound it inside.

Lovie would find a way to spin that too

Left the game with a minor calf niggle early in the first quarter, I believe.

Really?
Everything about the trailer and the cast seems to suggest it would in fact suck hard.

I liked it
But then again, I like explosions, the many ways to use the word fuck, a bunch of people getting killed, drugs, and hot chicks so……
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
But...John Travolta
he sucks.

Maybe he’s one of the people getting killed in explosions?

and yes. With a few notable exceptions, generally his delivery is terrible and he never looks like he’s taking anything seriously.

i'm 37
not much of a movie critic but Travolta has been in some classics
Sat Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Grease …. agreed he’s a lot stiff in some other parts and movies… mostly one’s in which people have bad scripts and want to make money on his name.
There's a reason he almost never worked again, that's all I'm saying.

You can say that of most actors
Not many make it for very long. Hollywood actors have a very short window to make some serious dough.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
I still don’t understand how Nicholas Cage made it. Nicholas Freakin’ Cage.

Him and David Hasselhoff
I refuse to even consider watching a Cage movie. Comedy Central had Hoff’s roast tonight. Freakin’ hysterical!

lol
again someone who had some movies Raising Arizona wild at heart, Valley Girl … damn i’m old… that were for their time cool… not to say its translated over time
I agree
Those movies were great, and I’d add Leaving Las Vegas as well. Extremely depressing, but very good. Raising Arizona is one of my favorite films.

The worst case for him was The Rock. Pairing him alongside Sean Connery for so much screen time was just cruel.

I'm not his biggest fan
But From Paris w/ Love and Pelham 1,2,3 were good IMO. Well mabye not GOOD, but movies I enjoyed watching. Pulp Fiction is awesome and Face/Off and Swordfish were decent enough to watch again.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
I'm not into whatever Grease and SNF are. If I wanna be entertained by a bunch of people dancing
Everytime my mom would catch Grease on TV I’d find myself walking outside to find something to get into.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
At the risk of sounding We Todd Did
I don’t know what PT’s is.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
well
I figured if you knew the godfather you’d been downtown to PT’s but maybe it’s not in the Ville anymore
Ah I know The Godfather b/c I was in Louisville
On business last December and stayed within walking distance from it. Seriously, on a two week trip I went to The Godfather on the 3rd day I believe and blew all of my per diem. If PT’s is anything like then I’d love it.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
does your per diem
ever take you to FLETC in GA?
Actually never went to Godfather but PT’s was pretty good it was also near 4th street and other bars so could be hit on either end of a good night.
well
Grease and SNF were both about guys and what they needed to do be to be cool in that age… anyway both classics but i can appreciate you not getting them
That's sort of an oversimplification of Grease
which is not really a statement I ever thought I’d have to make.
If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

also not implying
that i think Travolta is a great actor but for my generation his earlier movies were often viewed if nothing else so he has a fond place for me.
I went to a Bears blog
and argued about Travolta’s talent…. Please make sure that in the game recap you mention that the second half was boring and no one impressed with their posting.
Totally meant to leave the whole "if i wanna be entertained" part out
I’ve never fully watched Grease or SNF, just seen bits and pieces and didn’t like what I saw.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
LeFlevour's release point....Sucks!
Yeah but it worked!
That was anti-pretty
