Preseason Game 2 Quick Recap - Raiders at Bears
I saw way too much of this tonight. Not acceptable. Cutler was, luckily, able to keep a few plays alive with his feet, most notably the TD to Knox, but he can't keep doing that all season. Not a good night for Chris Williams.
Is it just me, or did this feel like the absolute longest preseason game in the history of forever?
This team still has a lot of work to do, but there are a few things that may be shaping up a bit. We'll have more recap and breakdown, as always, over the next few days, but let's take a look at some notable things.
Quick Stats
Jay Cutler 7/15, 99 YDS, TD
Matt Forte 5 carries, 109 YDS, TD
Devin Hester 29YDS RECEIVING, 20 YDS RUSHING
Julius Peppers 5 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 FF
More quickies after the jump.
Forte's big run skews things a bit, but he looked very sharp doing it.
Special Teams Coverage was a little better, but the absence of the almighty Mannelly made the rest of ST look like garbage.
Defense gets average pressure, Peppers still looks like a beast.
Urlacher injury appears to be calf related, and relatively non serious. He sat for precaution, I believe.
Can we keep Cornelius Brown just to have a guy named Cornelius?
2nd blocked punt this week. This week, Iglesias feels no interest blocking his man. Interestingly, he's in the same position that Afalava was last week.

good game guys
its a preseason game so it doesnt really matter
The result doesn’t, but next week is the game where the starting lineup gets its last major action before the meaningful games start, and we’re looking pretty shaky in some major departments. Obviously things will improve but, as an example, we had to wait a long time for the OL to start gelling last season.

But I don't think any amount of gelling...
will help overcome a turnstyle at LT. I was encouraged by a lot of what I saw tonight, but if Williams plays anywhere in the same ZIP code as poorly as he did tonight, this team is in trouble.

well, williams played very well last year at LT
hopefully this is just a preaseason thing. i wonder if part of it is the lack of scheming/game planning that is the general trend in preaseason. i know they don’t just wing it, but teams do not prep and scheme anywhere near the amount they do for a real game. whatever, if he does well in practice vs. peppers, i’ll be cautiously optimistic he’ll be fine come week 1.

The O-line is God aweful.
Cutler will not survive the season, if the season looked like last night.

After that performance last night
which hallmarks two games where the offense and defense looked pathetic for the most part and were still at “it’s a preseason game so it doesn’t really matter”? Wake up dude, we’re too soft to hang in this division right now.

well i was trying to make you guys feel better but whatever
how bout this instead…HAHA YOU LOST TO THE RAIDERS, WOW YOU MUST SUCK
Thank you.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
Well we won the half so we didn't actually lose to the Raiders
but I hate hearing it’s just a preseason game, these games are crucial to us and regardless of it not being the regular season it still reflects where we are as a team. I don’t like where we are as a team.

Even if you don't include the TD, Forte still got 5 YPC.
Miniscule sample size, but it was a good night for the 1st team’s running game.

Great debate last night
It’s a good sign that he might improve this year!

Hopefully we’re both wrong… with our individual concerns.

At lunch
I watched a little of the game, and I’m way more worried about the defense than either CW or Forte now.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Quick first thoughts...
1. C Williams played badly all night.
2. Forte is healthy.
3. The O-line needs to show more improvement than it has thus far.
4. Izzy should start at DE and Anderson can come in for situational pass rush duties.
5. Hate to beat a dead horse, but T Harris played weak again tonight. When is he going to bring his B game?
6. Melton, K Davis and Bell should make this roster, Alfalfa and Gilbert should not.
7. Iglesias may not make the team and he’s definitely behind Davis at this point.
8. Harrison played better and Adams and Toeaina played well.
9. Patrick Mannelly is missed, but at least Clark improved; nice effort Dez.
10. Dave Toub is not real happy right now.
11. Cutler is the real deal, he’s tough, smart, and will be an elite QB by season’s end (assumning the o-line learns how to block well).
12. Hester is great on plays that do not require him to be on the LOS and get separation or fight through contact. He’s a great slot WR, but he’s just not a good enough receiver yet to be a starter. DA should start along with Knox. Hester will get plenty of touches, he’s just not an every down WR yet.
13. This defense should be a lot better by now. I’m worried.
14. D Manning is an OK utility DB, but he’s just not good enough at any position to start.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!
O-line was a BIT MORE respectable in the run game

tommie harris has played pretty badly since the leg injury vs. dallas a few years ago
he’s an average DT, nothing more. we keep hoping for him to turn it around, but i’m not sure it’s going to happen. yes, the injuries have something to do with it, but he’s been mediocre for 3 years. quite honestly, i’d be shocked if he is in the top 20% of DTs, let alone one of the top ones, period. if he keeps playing mediocre, we need to start giving more of his snaps to other DTs, and just cut the man at the end of the year.

I feel authentic sympathy for Tommy,
but the Bears need to find a replacement. He doesn’t play with the same power, leverage or explosiveness. He’s had a good career, one that was cut short, but we don’t gain anything by wishing upon a star that he’ll recover.
If he does? Wonderful. Could not happen to a better guy.
But DT still needs to be our most pressing defensive need IMHO.

6. Melton, K Davis and Bell should make this roster, Alfalfa and Gilbert should not

... and even if you don't include the hail mary play...
Cutler was sacked on over 20% of his attempts. And he’s above average at avoiding sacks.
Williams was very bad tonight. Giving up 3-4 sacks from one spot in half a season isn’t good, especially when they were all to a DE that’s not elite. Giving up that many in one half is inexcusable, even for the preseason. LT is now issue #1 for the rest of the preseason, IMO.

Honestly, i think that game was just an anomaly
Cdub has been very reliable at LT up until that one game. That’s not enough to me to say we need a new LT replacement. Wait until next game he will do much better, i am just not going to jump ship on him from one bad performance in pre-season. This guy is the real deal, it was just one of those days i think.

Wolfe had a higher YPC than Bell
Even though his best run was called back for holding. So the Bell ran better than Wolfe argument is not true. Though I admit his drop was bad, at least he can get separation and receive out of the backfield unlike Bell.
He was afraid of the defense, that's why he dropped it. =/
Took his eyes off the ball. But he’s a RB, so I’m not too worked up about that one.
by GriggsBriggs on Aug 21, 2010 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I tend to side with keeping Bell...
over Wolfe, but you cannot simply quote YPC as the sole measure of a player’s running ability. Seriously, you are trying to split hairs between a 6 for 10yrd and 6 for 13yrd performance. Bell is a better between the tackles runner, a solid short yardage back (no pun intended), and hits the hole well. Further, he’s a much better pass blocker. I guess I’d rather gamble on keeping Bell as an RB and hoping his ST contributions can improve than keep Wolfe for ST and hope he becomes a better RB. In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if they both make the team. Nothing personal man, just business. ;>)
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!
I agree
Wolfe doesn’t bring anything to the table except special teams play. He had a perfectly thrown ball that he dropped; not going to help his case. Plus, I really like Bell’s ability to get the extra yard.

Wolfe doesn’t do anything well and is eating up a roster space. I wouldn’t keep him over Rashied Davis for special teams.

Dez has gotten the most practice I assume
Or they tried a few guys to back up Mannelly and he was the best.
its a completely different skill set
A normal center exchange just involves one arm and your wrist. A shotgun snap is just a flick of the wrist. Long snapping is more akin to a rugby throw in plus most of the power for the snap comes from your hips. Long snapping is its own unique skill.
all centers should be able to long snap
What if Pat Man gets hurt during a game?
"Michael Redd's owed 18.3 million next year. He can either opt out like an idiot or opt in like a douche bag." - NittanyCub
Still,
I’m not saying it’s the same thing, but Kruetz and Beekman would theoretically be much more comfortable doing that, instead of our tight end.
by GriggsBriggs on Aug 22, 2010 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions
Saying that all centers should be able to long snap
just shows that you know nothing about long snapping. Its a skill completely unrelated to anything a center does. Just because both line up at center and snap the ball doesn’t mean that there is anything more related to it. Saying that all centers should be able to long snap is like saying that all quarterbacks should be able to punt.
by MrPants on Aug 22, 2010 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
I said they should be more comfortable with it,
and NEVER implied that ALL centers should be able to go into a game and flawlessly carry out the task. However, given that the position and actions are SOMEWHAT similar, I would expect that our centers would be better suited for such a duty, rather than a TE who catches the ball. I guess it would be like comparing punting and kicking. They are different techniques, however, if your punter is out (let’s say), then the kicker shoud be most suited for the task, knowing the job that he does is most similar and he would be most comfortable out of everyone else.

The line is gonna get Cutler killed if they keep playing like that.
Orton is lucky he is in Denver where they have a solid O-Line. He would have been on the IR before midseason if he was still with the Bears last year.

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
Well that's what happens when players leave and you don't replace them
Because of the big trades and pick ups recently, I don’t see our line improving much anytime soon. Good thing Cutler has some mobility, but it really didn’t show tonight.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Aug 22, 2010 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions
True
But like with any other player, such as McNabb or Roethlisberger, even with mobility, you are still to blame sometimes for sacks. Our line played awful, but if Cutler wants to help himself, more awearness is going to be needed.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
I can't believe what you are saying
He had a great run out of the pocket, he also created the td play to Knox by escaping the pocket. What do you want??
"He is remarkably bright", a "terrific talent", the sky is the limit for Cutler"
-Mike Martz-
Look at the stats
Quarterbacks with that kind of mobility, McNabb, Rodgers, or Roethlisberger all lead the league in sacks. This is because, while they have the ability to escape pressure, they often have low awareness in the pocket, lacking that “pocket presence” that players like Marino or Manning, who can’t run, use to avoid sacks. I don’t doubt Cutler’s mobility, don’t twist my words, and he can make something out of nothing, but just like the other quarterbacks I’ve listed, he’s going to take a lot of sacks because of his lack of awareness.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
by Topher Doll on Aug 23, 2010 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions
I disagree completely
the only reason that Rodgers and Roethlisberger take a lot of sacks is due to the fact they hold on to the ball for far too long to try to make a play. It is well documented. If there is one thing Cutler has it is very good footwork in the pocket to create space. That doesn’t mean he makes the best decision after he creates opportunities. It is the reason that the last year he was in Denver they gave up so few sacks due to him creating many plays with his legs. You post so often on MHR go back to read the posts pre trade to substantiate if you disagree.
"He is remarkably bright", a "terrific talent", the sky is the limit for Cutler"
-Mike Martz-
Rodgers has improved his release last season a lot
He is much quicker now. You could use his line as an excuse, cause it is bad, but his release isn’t an issue now, Roethlisberger is blind in the pocket, that is why he shifts out so often. I’m not attacking Cutler, I’m attacking the type of quarterback he is, a mobile one that lacks awareness, and compensates with his athleticism. He isn’t a runner like Vick or Young, and he’s not a pocket passer like Manning or Marino, he’s in between, and he, like others like him, compensate for this lack of awareness with their athleticism. A number succeed, McNabb, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, are all good or great quarterbacks who have taken teams to the Super Bowl, Cutler can too. But he will be sacked a lot during his career, and part will fall on the line, but because of his style of play, part will be his fault.
As for my posting on MHR, it has nothing to do with this conversation, I was a Bears fan long before I followed the Broncos, and will continue to support the Bears, no matter how they deviate from their legacy.

It has to do with this conversation, not you as a bears fan
and not you posting there, but posts related to how well his pocket presence was before the trade thing went down and he was praised for his presence on MHR. If you go back and read old posts there pre trade they loved his pocket presence.

reply to your Roethlisberger/Rodgers
“With five years as a pro under his belt, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had accomplished far more than most signal callers his age, including Rookie of the Year honors, a Pro Bowl selection, and now two Super bowl championships. And for the most part he played like a guy with experience far exceeding his years.
And…
Blame it on the offensive line all you want, but sooner or later, you have to start thinking about how the quarterback is playing, in addition to how the offensive line is protecting it’s passer.
It’s no secret, folks: Aaron Rodgers holds onto the ball too long.
While it keeps him from throwing a ton of picks and incompletions, it also leads to sacks, missed chances, killed drives, a better passer rating, and ultimately can lose games.
But he wasn’t without his faults. During the 2008 season, he drew criticism for his tendency to hold onto the ball too long, which resulted in numerous sacks and turnovers. But a big part of Roethlisberger’s game is his ability to make something out of nothing. As a big, strong guy who won’t go down easily, he makes many big plays because of his willingness to hold onto the ball longer than most quarterbacks in the hopes that something will open up."
"He is remarkably bright", a "terrific talent", the sky is the limit for Cutler"
-Mike Martz-
Rodgers DID hold the ball too long
Especially in 2008, but in 2009 his release was much fast, not lighting, but hardly a slow release. Like this conversation, the article you mention at Bleacher Report is completely opinion. Neither of us are going to convince the other, so it’s not really worth it, but you should not one fact: quarterback who play like Cutler almost always lead the league in sacks, and the same will remain true for Cutler throughout his career. He will likely overcome most of his difficulties, but he will likely be sack a lot. One other thought, not sure what your article on Ben is about, I agree he’s done a lot in his career, he hardly won those Super Bowls, but he still has the rings and has he’s one tough dude, but he still gets sacked, a lot, and this is because of his lack of awareness in the pocket, thus leading to him moving out of the pocket. This works for him, but imagine how much better he’d be if he learned some pocket presence to go along with his toughness and athleticism.
Cutler can be great, he doesn’t have that “make something out of nothing” like Favre or Roethlisberger just yet, but he’s working on it, but I don’t think Cutler is as tough as those two guys, and both of them have take big hits for the type of game they play.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
by Topher Doll on Aug 24, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions
Actually not talking about their release at all
both links point out the fact that they hold the ball too long trying to create plays which in turn leads to sacks. As far as Roethlisberger goes, he has tremendous feet in the pocket for a guy his size, nort speed, but tremendous pocket presence that allows to move around and create plays. We will definitely disagree since I am not sure how you can come to that opinion on those 2 guys and I watch alot of their games. In fact they are probably near the top of the NFL in creating opportunities when the pocket starts to collapse.

and the line has to gel, and its a new system…blah blah blah. these life long professionals have 3 weeks to get better. we’ll see.
These life long pro's are .....
…. learning a new offensive system that is complex and takes time to learn , the line is learning a new zone blocking system & acclimating 3 new offensive line starters to that same new system and you expect what exactly ? For it to be perfect ? Cutler looks great , Forte looked good and the WR’s & TE’s are comin along so why so gloomy ? While our starters were in , from what I’ve seen in highlights , we played rather well ( minus Williams ) so hold it together man its all good .
And just a little blurb I saw Urlacher was held out because it was just a preseason game . So big sigh of relief there .

every year they same legitimate cliches get pranced out as to why the bears don’t look good or don’t play well or don’t start hot. some part of the system is new, the line hasn’t gelled yet, this coach is still learning his players, this guy is in a new position etc. a lot of them have been excuses covering poor player talent and coaching. this year they’re probably the most legit that they’ve ever been, but at the same time its been nothing but excuses for the last 4 years. the defense last night looked a lot like the defense last year, and the year before, along with the oline and running game. remember when everything finally came together last year? yeah me neither. so, i’m done taking solace in “it’s early” or “just the preseason” until something actually changes.

is the past the past
Also didn’t our D struggle without 54 last season ?
or is the past important? when you make up your mind let me know. urlacher has been here for when this defense has stunk, and he’s been out when it has stunk. him being back doesn’t make the d line get any more pressure, or certain plays against the secondary. the defense looked as bad the other night as it has for much of the last few years.
As I stated in a previous post ....
…. the past is the past and it has no affect on this season . And look at the other side of the argument there bud , Urlacher has been there when the D was great and …… ohh , oops it was rarely the case before him . When you take 54 out you take out our D’s heart and soul . And you can say all you like
urlacher has been here for when this defense has stunk, and he’s been out when it has stunk.…… but without him our D is not the same . He makes all our calls and has the ability to read the offense better than anyone one the roster . We all saw how well Roach did calling the D ( he left dudes uncovered ) and Hunter is a good back up and nothing more . And him being back can make the entire D better . His audibles can directly effect both the pass rush and the coverage . Say like in the Falcons game last season , call me crazy but I’ll bet he’d have gotten the coverage right so that a WR ain’t runnin all by himself . And when he calls an audible it can effect what the D line does also . Maybe a stunt or a zone blitz or a simple shift . 54 can make a huge difference to our D , our entire D . And your goin off on a rant because we played bad in the PREseason ? Come on dude at least save all this hate and angst for when the games matter .

Actually Mike B it is impressive
with how terrible the line was that Cutler was able to get anything at all going. That 4th down pass was a thing of beauty

i thought there wee a few bright spots.
Anderson was playing good but Izzy should start.
The wide outs are looking good.
Forte has his burts back.
Does anybody else think that are run defense was pretty good?
Is it me,or do the Packers really suck???

After the Raiders first few drives it got pretty good...
but in the third and fourth quarters it turned back to crap.

No Improvement
I have had enough already. Lovie and the coaching staff should start looking for new jobs. The play of the Bears is unacceptable. Angelo needs to go as well. Time for an overhaul. This team has nothing!
Yeah
Played badly in 2 preseason games. Might as well give up on the entire season

pre season
some good mostly bad its only pre season and i read somwhere that the colts are 4 and
24 in pre season so there is hope..
what does bother me as with last year even in pre
season, teams just look better prepared then the bears and fired up didnt we start slow last season as well? and that may be the lovie ship setting sail if it continues through the season.. im thinking 8-8
The 1st string looked like complete garbage in the 1st quarter
Both sides of the line were getting manhandled, and our secondary was deja-vu from last year.
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that." -- Jerry Angelo (12.30.2008)
Jerry Angelo trades for Jay Cutler! (4.2.2009)
Logan Mankins...
needs to be in a bears uniform within the next 5 minutes the o line is looking worse and worse. They needed to either draft a guard or sign for one and i definitely think they may need to look into trading for because at this cutler wont make it to the dallas game(which is only in week 2)
The o line play was terrible last night and i dont think they did all that amazing of a job in the running game outside of that one run. (btw nice block by G-REG on that play) Forte showed great speed to run away from huff and branch(these two guys can run) and it was a great sign that he is heathy.
The defense is back at it again, they play great for the first to downs forcing a 3rd and 10 or hell a 3rd and 21 and then collapse this must change. Peppers needs to show why hes dominant and the best DE in the league. In the last two games he has played “ok” not up to his standards and i am disappointed.
Bell is a good RB, he runs hard always falls forward and runs with some power and doesn’t dance around he should definitely get on the team ahead of wolfe.
Major wright is the other safety beside Harris this season, although he didn’t play tonight he left a hell of an impression on me last week. He tackles like an animal and will bring the pain im tired of seeing the arm tackles and i want to see someone step up and lay the opposition out.
Last but not least hopefully Urlacher is good and ready for week 1. I dont care if you like him or not, think hes washed up or not, this defense is in trouble without him plain and simple

One thing to take solace in is that most of the damage was being done by one guy
Hopefully in a real game, the coaching staff would game plan and consistently have a rb or te help williams out

Yeah
and it was his first real bad game at LT in his career! In addition to this, the game didn’t count.

Bell doesn't break any tackles
A juke is just as good as a broken tackle, Wolfe does that, Bell just runs in a straight line towards the defenders. On the play called back for holding Wolfe was spinning and juking defenders for extra yards, Bell just runs into them.

Well i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree
At the same time though, I am sure that Pep will be worth the investment come the start of the season, the guy makes the entire line better, not many defensive players in the history of the NFL made an owner say “I’m am going to shell out 79 million dollars to get this guy on my team”.
Football is a tough sport, and playing football at the highest possible level in the world today is not an easy task. I am sure Pep or his coaches do not doubt his abilities to be a game changer and i am sure he rolls out of bed every morning and thanks God that he is fortunate enough to go to work every day and play the game that he loves. We as fans watching football take that for granted, we expect everyone to step on the football field and throw 400+ yards, get 7 sacks, and score 50 points a game.
It doesn’t skew the fact though that playing this game is a blessing and we should be fortunate to have players like that on our team. If he or any player goes out and gives 110%, play through injuries, and leaves it all on the field then i don’t care if he gets 6 sacks in a season, at least i know that he gave his best and tried everything to make his team win. At the same time he can’t do it all himself. When he gets double teamed this year it is up to every player to step up and make the big play because it’s all about the team and it’s all about them playing for each other, and the tradition of the navy blue and orange.

That's being pretty critical, but...
… That’s your opinion.
I would be more concerned with the fact that when Peppers chased Campbell out of the pocket or made him step up, there wasn’t any other defender finishing up the play. Someone else is going to have to step up on that line and take advantage of the pressure Peppers WILL get on the other side of the ball.

The only issue with trading for Mankins is .....
….. his contract demands . He wants something similar to what ole boy for the Saints got and we ain’t got it . Now compensation we got . Give’em a second rounder and say Kevin Schaffer or maybe just strait up for Greg Olsen ( as much as I would hate to see Jay’s BFF go ) or maybe just a second . Compensation ain’t no problem , but money kinda is . Maybe we could structure his contract to where we could afford him , but its still gonna be tight and he won’t be an immediate impact seeing how he’ll have to get on the same page with our O-line . That said I agree with you , just go get Mankins we need all the help we can get .

There was some good and some bad
I keep hearing how there is no game plan, its very vanilla – whatever and thats fine for the preseason. But when you see someone is getting to the qb why not make adjustments! Last I saw that is also part of the game – being able to make adjustments.
I do have reservations about this oline. I did notice that the run blocking was better this week.
The defensive play was reminiscent of last years team. On 3rd and long our D just isnt able to make the stop.
But, when you think of the first half, we had a couple of good plays from the offense – the long run by Forte and the ability of Cutler to scramble and elude the defense on the td throw to Knox. Our defense had the bend but dont break mentality – Raiders moved the ball up and down the field but only came away with 13 points. So if we take that into mind it was an ugly game but at the half we DID have the lead.
Last nite's game
Getting worse w/each game!!! The Raiders pushed us around…on our home field! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…..The cover 2 does not work!! A new attiude is needed before Sat. nite if they think this is acceptable.
Well I'll be watching the game again
This time more closely on NFL network so I can better gauge what’s going on.
Dan Pompeii reviews the performances of key players and those who are playing for roster places (Matt Toeaina did well; neither Wolfe nor Bell have yet claimed the #3 RB spot). His credibility has fallen, though, since he wrote:
Never knew the Bears’ MVP was long snapper Patrick Mannelly. He’s out with a neck stinger. I wasn’t even sure how to spell his name.
To that, I think I speak for us all when I proclaim: Fie on you, sir!

Enough!
If I hear: “it’s only pre-season” one more time I’m going to hurl!
For those of you that are checked out, the “Other Teams” are playing in the pre-season also! … but they don’t look like “god awful horse shit” out there on the field.
The Special Teams, the only silver lining for years, look a tad better than Pop Warner.
The defense still can’t get off the field on 3rd and LONG, … let alone third down.
Now lets face it, the Raiders D-Line is At Best, an average line.
The NFC North D-Lines are the real deal.
… And, they’ll be taking Cutler off the field with a “shop-vac” before this O-Line “Gels” :(
OK homie ( pbanachi ) start your cookie tossing ........
….. its only a preseason game . So let me get something strait you think teams like the Bills are gonna be awesome because they beat the Colts in the preseason ? Or maybe you think Detroit is gonna win the division because they went 4-0 in the preseason a few years back ( how’d that work out regular season wise for them ??? ) ? Or are the Browns a contender because they beat the Packers in a preseason game ? Or could the Raiders be Super Bowl bound after defeating not only us but the Cowboys as well ? Point is in the preseason your playin for what ? Nothin . So is it really so bad that we lost 2 preseason games ? Heck no man .

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
The score and standings mean squat in pre season!
Some teams play their starters longer, … some teams spend more time evaluating their bench, … some teams, … etc. etc. etc. … BUT when your starters look like crap and give up 5 sacks in a half, when the starters can’t get off the field in third and LONG, when the starters continue to miss blocking assignments, and Tackles, then it’s time to pull your head out of your ass, stop making lame excuses and BEAR DOWN!
Go Bears, … and keep that shop-vac near by.
Really ???? So what do you win .....
…. in the preseason ? Do you win a shiney trophy ? Or maybe the respect of the league and your peers ? NO !!! You win squat and risk the health of your star players . The O-line has to have time to gel , the D will be fine and start making the routine tackles they’ve been missing and get your panties out of the bunch there in there homie ……. IT’S THE PRESEASON !!!!!!!!!!!! Toss them cookies again .

Read the post!
It’s not the score, I say again, or a “shiney trophy” as you say, it’s the level of play.
Our starters look BAD!
And they where playing against SD without several Key players that are having hold out issues;
And they played against the Raiders that didn’t field their top DE and DB.
Out preformance was inconsistend and poor.
That’s the Ofensive side of the ball.
I have been hearing the Defense will be ok for 4 years now???
The first time I watched the bears was in 63 in a bar that is now Palatine and I’ve seen some “Real Bear Defense” over those 47 years.
Unless we figure out how to get off the field on 3rd down (especially 3rd and LONG),
it’s not going to be “OK”. And I don’t know if it’s lack of player quality or play calling, …
But thats the cold hard reality of it.
“It’ll be OK” and “that’s just the wind baby” is not very reassuring.
Pox on the scores and a pox on your trophy. Our starters are a Long way from playing.
Cherry pick a few plays here or there, and talk away the bad ones, … another 7 & 9?
… It starts in the trenches, … neither line is getting a push and it folds from there :(
The only thing I'll take issue with is ....
……………..
neither line is getting a pushNo their getting push just not on a consistant basis . It seems to me that once both lines get a feel of their new additions they both could play very well . On offense the line blocked great on running plays vs. the Raiders and was so-so aginest the pass rush . One thing to note is when Williams was blocking a DE he was dominiate . It was only aginest a blitzing LB in Wimbley where he folded like a wet towel . Also not love for Omiyale ? He did good in both run and pass blocking . And Greg Olsen helped spring Fortes long run . The D-line only one man was getting ggod push , Julius Peppers . Though doubled most of the night he still managed 5 tackles , 1 sack , 1 forced fumble and a pass defense . Aside from him you are correct our D-line was incosistant . Harris flashed a few times , but when your facing one on ones all night you gotta make some plays . Izzy looked like the best player to put across from Peppers . He was a beast aginest the run and got a good push aginest the pass .
Even with all that said its still the PREseason and we have time to work out the kinks in the trenches . The third PREseason game is the dress rehearsal for the season so hold your judgement until then at least . Now if we play horrid in that game maybe worry a bit , but its still just a preseason game .

Good Points on:
1. Izzy, if there is a God, he should start.
2. No doubt that Pep is the “real deal”.
3. Harris’s replacement and a guard are 1st and 3nd rd picks respectively.
Also in defense of Olsen, He is Not a Bad Blocker!
Mediocre, OK, but this garbage about him being a Bad Blocker has been regurgitated (there I go again with more puke talk, LOL!) by every talking-head that has a sports column, that it has now been accepted as a (false) truism.
Yes but ....
……. regurgitated sounds brainy my man !! Hey at least we can see eye to eye on a few things !! Its a start .

If our regular season performance resembles these last 2 efforts
We can worry then. Pre-Season is about learning, “gelling”, and evaluating.
We have learned that our OL has not gelled. Evaluating our D, we still lack 3rd down discipline and sufficient surge to impose our will on opposing offenses.
The world is not over. We still have time to improve. Our final roster isn’t even set yet.
I shall not despair. I shall remain cautiously optimistic.
But seriously, we lost to the F’in Raiders?? C’mon Lovie – grow a pair.

The Raiders are getting better and have a legit QB now. They should be decent. not that great but much better than last year.

Our play was pathetic and lazy
I was at the game and I thought maybe the tape woulnd’t look as bad but it was. No one has mentioned this but our safeties continue to be slow helping over the top and with all due respect Chris Harris’ coverage skills are poor. Now I see why we traded him the first time. Great in run support but in the passing game not so good. Peppers and Izzy looked good. Mark Anderson looked good against 2nd string guys in Q3. We had no cohesiveness on offense at all through the first half and our backup offense is a joke. I thought Forte looked good and the offensive line was the exact opposite of the first, good run blocking and poor pass blocking.

This may have been mentioned above, but
I’m not a big fan of phrasing things like this:
Forte’s big run skews things a bit
Because… this same “skewing” applies to all RBs in the league. It should be assumed that when you look over the season total #‘s for a RB, that he should have broke for a long one every once-in-a-while. “Skewed” or not, the other 20 yards he got on 4 carries, an average of 5, which I will take any day. Average the last two weeks out, and his numbers don’t look as bad as they did last week. That is the point of a large pool of data. You could say last week it “skewed” his numbers because he sucked. This week he “skewed” his numbers because he did good. But that is how it is for every RB in the league. And at the end of the season, I hope he has more days where his numbers are “skewed” higher than lower. (Rant over)
Lets take it for what it was, a great day for Forte.
by I Have Bearsititis on Aug 23, 2010 11:16 AM CDT reply actions
Forte's run was sprung by Olsen's block.
I looked at that play several different times to see how and “why” it was so effective. Olsen got out and really sealed the outside allowing Forte to quickly get to the second tier of the defense and turn on the jets.
Props to GREG OLSEN on that play!

LBs were garbage
I just watched the first quarter of the game at lunch, and I’ve got say Briggs (looked exceptionally horrible) and Hillenmeyer were nonexistent. Over persuing, missing tackles, etc. The D-line looked pretty good; Anderson, Izzy, and obviously Pepp got good pentration. Barring one good play covering Miller, DMS should never play safety again. The positive was the running game- I loved seeing the delayed hand-off plays (does anyone know the real verbiage?). I saw very good blocks by Olsen, Davis, Louis, and Omi.
