Not only do the Bears boast nine of “SI’s Greatest” by jersey number, but one of them is #6 and it rhymes with, but ain’t, Cutler.

WCG… where we give past and present kickers (and a certain awesome long snapper) their due.

Yeah, that article was great...

They only touched on a few topics, though. It would be the perfect 10-page in depth piece. Most of it, we already know. But the numbers of how little has been done with such a potentially great franchise is ridiculous. This should be bigger news.

They'd better

pony up the money for Mannelly. He’s got years left in him, and it’s not like he’s crazy expensive.

To that list of all-time Chicago greats...

Might as well add #2 Charley Trippi, who played for the Chicago Cardinals. Yes, not a Bear, but a great Chicago football player.

At #7, Big Ben shouldn’t even have been in consideration. But nice to give Papa Bear Halas a shout out at that position _. Also the Punky QB shoutout at #9.

Could somebody plz go through and note the Chicago player shout-outs in that list? I’m not a particularly good Chicago Football historian. Thx!

Jersey numbers.

Nice read however I have a problem with a few namely:

#7: Elway over Halas.

For that I present this to the SI writing staff:

I got a Problem w/ the jersey No.s

Aikman over Young? I don’t think a lot of people consider Aikman better than Young, even if he does have more rings.

"I was interviewing George Halas and I asked him who is the greatest running back you ever saw. And he said, 'That would be Red Grange.' And I asked him if Grange was playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain. And he said, 'About 750, maybe 800 yards.' And I said, 'Well, 800 yards is just okay.' He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old.' - Chris Berman

by Sam Householder on Aug 26, 2010 11:31 AM CDT reply actions

The argument

is going to be that Young was the beneficiary of an already great team and Montana’s backup while Aikman came in and after going 1-15 in the 1st year…well, you know the rest.

Aikman should send a nice fruit basket to the Vikings for making the Hershel Walker trade.

Bottom line, the Vikings don’t make the trade, Dallas likely wouldn’t have had any SB appearances in the ’90s.

Aikman also had a WAY more talented team!

His offensive line was one of the all-time best ever assembled. Big and strong in all areas. He also was behind a better defense.

With Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and a host of great secondary players…

… Aikman was a modern day Terry Bradshaw.

But they started 1-15.

Montana and company (and gazillionairre DeBartolo who put his teams together pre-free agency) were already perennial challengers.

And yet Bradshaw has 4 rings and in the HOF while Brady is the #12, since you had to go and mention it.

I hate the 49ers because the West Coast was the remedy to the 46. I hate the Cowboys because, well, they’re the Cowboys. Both teams had some mighty spectacular players. A good line=a good RB which leads to the opportunity to through the ball=good QB=good WR=ball control which leads to good D stats which….you see where I’m going with this.

"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith

by Pete Dixon on Aug 26, 2010 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

But, Young didn't have it easy either?

His stint with the Bucs was anything, but successful. He took over the 49ers in ’91 and lost two NFC Championships to the Aikman-led Cowboys.

And if we are comparing Montana to Aikman, then first season with the 49ers in 1979 produced a 2-14 season. And his first year as starter in 1980?

… 2-14.

The record has nothing to do with it in my opinion. Aikman had an OUTSTANDING supporting cast. That was the difference.

I do.

I think Davis just had a bad stint with Rex and Kyle and the Turdner system. He’s back in the slot and will matchup better in an offense that’s geared to his skill sets.

Only concern is confidence and hand-eye coordination. Martz believes in him, so I don’t he performs better than what most people expect.

18 game season-- to me-- means...

… Tougher to develop a QB in the NFL now.

With only two preseason games and a shorter offseason— good luck trying to get your rookie franchise QB ready for competition on week 1.

It also means, “hello” to a few more warm weather games for Bears fans in the month of August.

Hmmm... But

… Two of them NOW count. Meaning that you have “two less games” to test the water with your new overpaid rookie QB before deciding to throw him to the sharks or bring in a veteran.

With more QBs coming out of college after two years of play, the NFL has the potential of being more like the the NBA and all the players that made the jump from HS to NBA and the mediocre play we see today (where 4 teams on the East are legitmate teams).

The development has to come from somewhere and I am concerned as to where that will be given that a player can leave school after their sophmore year.

I don't favor the 18 game schedule either

In the 8th grade Mike Ditka won his school's Science Fair with a model of a working volcano. There were 17 other working volcano's made that day, but only one named Mount Ditka.

Not that it has anything to do with your comment, per se…

-------
Stupid babies need the most attention!

by David Taylor on Aug 26, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

It depends...

I think I’ve developed a system where the NFL gets its 2 extra regular season games, the players don’t get pissy from being injured, and you still have enough time to grade out your rookies…

Schedule:
2 games against each Division foe. (6)
1 game against each team from two Divisions in your own Conference (8)
1 game against each team from one division in the opposite Conference (4)
20 week regular season. (currently 17)
2 Bye weeks. One during the first 10 weeks, one during the second 10 weeks. No bye shall happen during the first 2 or last 2 weeks of the season.
Camp can start one week earlier.
Teams can schedule in-camp scrimmages against any one other team, but cannot charge the public for these scrimmages.
2 Preseason games.

Increase the Roster size by between 3 and 7, and revise the Injury rules (half-season IR?).

As long as ticket prices don’t increase (and hopefully go down), I’m kool with pretty much whatever they do.

by Doshi on Aug 26, 2010 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

That's quite the proposal

it’s really not half bad. I’m still on the fence on this one. My overall thought is, if the extra games our good for the league as a whole then I get it, if they are just because teams are trying to make more money because they aren’t selling out during the preseason then I don’t get it.
