Bears Reach Mandatory 75 Player Roster Limit

Per multiple reports, the Bears have started reducing their roster from 80 players to the 75 mandated by Tuesday's deadline.

So far, here are the cuts:

QB Matt Gutierrez

WR Zeke Markshausen

DE Maurice Evans

Update: The final roster move was announced this afternoon.  The Bears have added FB Will Ta’ufo’ou to the waived/ injured list.

The Bears will take one final look at the players in action this Thursday, and then begin chipping away to the final 53 man roster due by September 4th.

I thought I read somewhere

that players on IR counted against the 80-man roster, but not against the 75-man roster. If true, we only need to make one more move, given that Unga is on IR

You're right on the first part...

He won’t count towards the roster tomorrow when the deadline hits. So we still need two more cuts since he won’t count.

I can't believe they cut these guys!!!

Wait who are they again? And yes torch you did read that so we only have 1 more cut to go at this time.

Thinning

Start at the top with Phillips, Angelo, Smith, Marinelli, and Tice. Now you are talking!

Yeah, let’s kick out Tice – who’s had one offseason and very little talent to work with and, incidentally, is regarded as a very good offensive line coach. Great thinking there, bub.

I’m so glad the Chicago meatheads are back now the offseason is coming to an end…..

Uh-Oh!

I agree that Tice and Martz should stay, however you forgot to put the McCaskey’s on that list, Chiboy.

Roster Rules

The teams have to be down to 53 by Sept. 4th, not sure what time, I think it’s 2 or 3PM EST.

53

Brad Biggs has a column about what he thinks the 53 will be on breakingsports.

Kinda of surprised

about Ta’ufo’ou since I was reading in the paper as possibly making the team….Though I wondered how since FB and Martz offense go together like oil and water….

Still they could of placed him on IR just to be nice I guess…..

Getting to know Mike Martz offense with this offensive line? It’s just hours of pure boredom interrupted by moments of unbelievable horror.

Me too

While Martz may not use a FB, he still seems like a good player but then again since the team sees the glass as half full they assume Martz will be there for the long haul and won’t need a FB down the road. He could always be a practice squad guy again.

"I was interviewing George Halas and I asked him who is the greatest running back you ever saw. And he said, 'That would be Red Grange.' And I asked him if Grange was playing today, how many yards do you think he'd gain. And he said, 'About 750, maybe 800 yards.' And I said, 'Well, 800 yards is just okay.' He sat up in his chair and he said, 'Son, you must remember one thing. Red Grange is 75 years old.' - Chris Berman

You kind of have to act like Martz is there for the long haul

You can’t keep players on the roster because “Maybe the next coaching staff might want to use them”.
