Bears Offense, Week 1 play-by-play (1st Half)

Hello, I'm new to WCG, but if some of you are Blackhawks fans you might (but probably not) recognize me from my occasional comments at Second City Hockey. But I've been a Bears fan all my life, which is not too easy when you're living that life growing up in Florida and then living in Texas.

But I live in Chicago now, and of course I can follow the Bears closer than I ever could as a kid. Plus, I've recently acquired one of these newfangled toys called a "DVR", which allows me to record games and watch them over and over. Even in slow motion if I want to! Golly gee, technology these days, am I right?

So I thought I'd do a little play-by-play analysis of the Bears' offense, to see on a play-by-play level what works and what doesn't, with an emphasis on the line play. Sure, it's easy to say "the line sucks" or "big hole to run through there" (not so much the second these days, though), but what makes it possible? Who are the contributors and goats that lead to the success and failure of each play?

Following the jump is every play in the first half of the Lions game, with analysis of each one. Now, some general caveats:

1) I'm working from the FOX broadcast, which generally is the worst kind of broadcast to work from. They don't really care about showing you who's on the field and who isn't. So while I've tried to identify the Bears' personnel for each play, sometimes I just don't know.

2) Obviously, I don't know the specific play calls, blocking assignments, etc. So while sometimes someone is standing there and looking stupid while a pass rusher gets through untouched, I don't have any way of knowing if he blew his assignment or someone else did. So I try not to assign blame, instead just focusing on who does what. That said, trends do become obvious over time - if a player is consistently standing there looking dumb while a pass rusher gets through untouched, something's probably wrong.

3) Yes, there are probably typos, and possibly even sentences that don't, strictly speaking, make sense.

And here are some general observations that I've gleaned so far:

1) Louis was easily the best OL the Bears had in the first half of the game, often bottling up Suh by himself. Omiyale and Williams seemed very weak. Kreutz does a lot of standing around. Garza I didn't notice much, either in good or bad contexts.

2) The line as a whole nonetheless played OK when it comes to pass-blocking. It was definitely a "bend but don't break" affair, almost always getting blown off the line of scrimmage, and with Detroit rushing only four on nearly every single play of the half. It's not like the Lions were bringing a lot of heat, and I shudder to think of what will happen when the Bears play a defense that does. BUT ... there were very few occasions where someone got through untouched. Cutler always had at least a chance to make a throw; the only sack was more or less a voluntary affair on his behalf (see play #15 below). And he was not hit or even seriously hurried often, either.

3) The line was garbage on run plays. Seriously, garbage.

4) Aromashodu appears to have been called on to run-block a few times out of the slot, and was basically a bucket of fail in these situations. Knox had a couple of nice downfield blocks, though.

5) Manumaleuna looks like the primary blocking TE, but he needs to improve if this is going to be his role.

So, without much further ado, here's the 1st half analysis. If there's sufficient interest, I'll post the second half in a day or two ... these things take a while to do, as I usually watch each play a half-dozen times or so, sometimes more if the angles are bad or there's a lot going on.

DRIVE #1, from Bears 34

1: 1st and 10, Forte left guard to CHI 35 for 1 yard
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Aromashodu in slot, Knox and Hester wide. Forte and Olson lined up in the backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off to Forte about 5 yards deep in the backfield.  Omiyale and Kreutz double-team DT Suh, although Omiyale leaves the double-team in order to push away LE Avril, who's able to penetrate the backfield untouched. Williams has no trouble with RE Vanden Bosch on the left, holding his block until the play is over. Garza engages DT Williams long enough to give Forte space. All in all, a good job by the line. Olson plunges into the pile and along with Louis drives back LB Peterson.  The breakdown appears to be with Aromashodu, who's lined up in the slot opposite CB Berry. It looks like he's assigned to block Berry out of the play, but doesn't get there near fast enough. Consequently, Berry makes the tackle to hold Forte to a small gain.

2. 2nd and 9, Forte left tackle to CHI 42 for 7 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Olsen in slot, Knox and Hester wide. Forte and Manumaleuna (in motion) lined up in the backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off to Forte about 5 yards deep in the backfield. Big trouble right away here, as Omiyale immediately turns inside to double-team DT Suh, only to realize that LE Avril is once again coming in untouched. So turns to block Avril but is already several yards into the backfield, where he's pushed back even further. This also allows Suh to beat Kreutz, once again coming over from center, and almost get to Forte before he's even to the line. Meanwhile, Williams isn't beat clean by RE Vanden Bosch, but does allow him the edge, and Vanden Bosch is also nearly able to get to Forte. He just whiffs as Forte runs by. Fortunately, Garza and Louis are able to seal the hole inside of Williams, and Forte gallops through for a gain. Knox also contributes with a block on the outside on CB Wade, and S Delmas has to come up for the tackle.

3. 3rd and 2, Cutler pass short middle to Aromashodu complete for 20 yards to DET 38
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu in right slot, Hester in motion left slot to wide right, Knox wide left, Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
More quick penetration by the Lions, with RE Vanden Bosch coming from right end up through the middle, forcing a quick throw by Cutler. Williams responds by double-teaming Garza's man (can't tell who it is, probably DT Williams). Kreutz has once again turned right to double DT Suh, who is nonetheless able to get a hand in the vicinity of Cutler's face, and the only resistance Vanden Bosch gets is when Garza leaves the double-team to make a desperate lunge at him. MEanwhile, Omiyale gives up ground to a rushing LE Avril, and nearly gets pushed into the QB. Cutler's hurried throw is high, but Aromashodu is able to tip it to himself and make Peterson miss (twice!) before Vanden Bosch runs 20 yards downfield to tackle him from behind. Great blocking after the catch by Olsen, who takes both safeties out of the play with a single block, and Forte, who takes out LB Johnson, and a Knox/Hester combo that keeps a disinterested-looking CB Wade away from the play.

4. 1st and 10, Cutler pass incomplete deep right to Aromashodu
Manumaleuna, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, and Omiyale down. Olsen in motion left to right, Aromashodu in right slot, Forte and Clark in the backfield, Cutler under center.
Omiyale once again driven back by LE Avril, but he does a good job of keeping Avril wide of Cutler. This time, Kreutz and Louis have an easy time double-teaming Suh, and there's no pressure from Cutler's blind side, either. Cutler has ample time to fire deep to Aromashodu, who simply drops the perfectly throw ball. A shame - the play as a whole was otherwise well-executed by all involved.

5. 2nd and 10, Forte right guard to DET 33 for 5 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Manumaleuna at TE, lined up right. R.Davis in right slot, Knox wide left, Forte motions from left slot into backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off to Forte about two yards deep. Not too sure what happens here - Williams lunges right and looks to get only a small piece of a rushing LB Peterson. This leaves Kreutz alone to block both Peterson and RE Vanden Bosch, who is collapsing again to the middle. Vanden Bosch grabs Forte at the line, as does LB Johnson, who's able to shake off both Louis and Manumaleuna, but Forte is able to stumble forward for 5 yards anyway.

6.  3rd and 5, Cutler pass short left complete to Aromashodu for 9 yards to DET 24
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Knox and Aromashodu twins left. Oslen and Hester twins right. Forte in backfield, Cutler in shotgun.
Forte does a good job of picking up LB Berry, blitzing from the blind side. DT Suh and LE Avril both penetrate, and overall the Bears line gets pushed back off the line with only Garza and Williams holding their ground in a double-team of RE Vanden Bosch. Thanks to the shotgun formation, though, Cutler gets the throw off quickly before anyone gets close. Aromashodu gets an easy few yards after catch before being pushed out of bounds by S Delmas.

7. 1st and 10, Cutler pass short right complete to Hester for 17 yards to DET 7
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Manumaleuna down. Olsen TE right. Knox wide left. Hester in motion from slot left to right, Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Williams gets beat by RE Vanden Bosch to the outside, recovers and pushes his foe back, before getting beat a second time. Vanden Bosch nearly sacks Cutler from behind but Cutler releases the ball before getting hit. Meanwhile, the entire line of scrimmage is pushed back six yards as the Lions rush six, before LE Avril drops back into coverage after his initial push.  This confuses Olsen, who appears to consider chasing Avril at first, and he stands there for a moment before running aimlessly back to the pile. DT Suh is held by both Omiyale and Manumaleuna during a double-team, but he gets a hand in Cutler's face - eight yards into the backfield - anyway. Good presence by Cutler to get the ball out and complete with his protection getting pushed into his face. Hester gets a few YAC before getting pushed out by CB Houston.

8. 1st and goal from 7, Forte right end to DET 5 for 2 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Manumaleuna and Olsen double TE right. Knox(?) wide left, Forte and Clark in the backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler pitches right to Forte, who's forced to the sideline when no hole appears. I feel like the Lions knew this was coming - they have four lined up at LB in the middle, plus a safety lined up wide. Forte's in trouble right away, and is forced further outside by diving LB Follett, who nearly makes the tackle three yards behind the line. Kreutz has trouble getting away from the middle, and Manumaleuna may have had the wrong play in mind, as he's blocking up the middle instead of sweeping wide. Omiyale similarly starts left when the play is right. Of the linemen, only Williams makes it to the right flat to block for Forte, all the way from the left side. Olsen and Clark make initial blocks but there are just too many Lions, and by the time Forte makes it to the sideline, there are 7 Lions compared to 3 Bears to block them. Nothing Forte can do, and he's pushed out by S Brown for minimal gain.

9. 2nd and goal from 5, Cutler scrambles right end to DET 1 for 4 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down, Olsen TE left, Aromashodu and Forte in slot, Hester and Knox wide, empty backfield with Cutler under center.
Once again, the Bears get destroyed at the line, even though the Lions only rush four, with the pile driven back five yards and Cutler driven out of the pocket. Surging DT Hill drives Garza back into Cutler's face, and Omiyale gets driven back by LE Avril to about the same place. Cutler moves out right and actually ducks under an arm tackle by LB Peterson, before being dragged down by a pusuing Avril. It should be noted that none of the receivers looked open on the play, although I couldn't see Knox. Again, the Lions seemed to pretty much know what was coming.

10. 3rd and goal from 1, Forte right tackle to DET 2 for -1 yards
K.Davis, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Asiata, Olsen down. Manumaleuna and Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off to Forte about 4 yards behind the line. Again, the Bears simply get whipped at the line. Williams, Garza, Kreutz, and Louis all flop down right on the line after making contact. Omiyale somehow fares even worse, getting pushed back by DT Suh right into Manumaleuna who in turn is in the way of Forte, two yards behind the line. Suh really made this play for the Lions- he creates the wall that makes the initial stop of Forte, who fights all he can before getting pulled down by DT Fluellen.

11. 4th and 2, FIELD GOAL

DRIVE #2, from Bears 39

12. 1st and 10, Cutler pass incomplete deep left to Knox + 15 yard ROUGHING THE PASSER penalty on Lions to DET 46
Manumaleuna, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Olsen motion from slot left to TE left. Hester in right slot and Knox wide right. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
RE Vanden Bosch simply wastes Olsen, then splits through Manumaleuna and Williams to get in Cutler's face quickly. Cutler does a good job of avoiding him, then rolls out left, where he is pursued by LE Avril, who's shaken off Omiyale relatively easily. The good news is that Louis has managed to hold his block on Suh without a double-team. Nonetheless, Cutler heaves it deep to no one in particular - official PBP says intended for Hester but Knox appeared to be closest. I wish he'd get those out of bounds, but he was under duress with Avril flying at him. Avril was subsequently called for the hit to the head.

13. 1st and 10, Cutler scrambles right end to DET 28 for 18 yards, negated by 10 yard HOLDING penalty to CHI 44.
No doubt about the call on Garza. Cutler's likely sacked without it, but otherwise it was a nifty little run.

14. 1st and 20, Forte left guard to CHI 45 for 1 yard
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu in right slot. Knox and Hester wide. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler takes the snap and fakes the WR screen to Knox, then hands off 5 yards deep to Forte. Having received the handoff, Forte finds Omiyale being abused by LE Avril to his right, Williams struggling to get a hand on DT Suh to his left, and RE Vanden Bosch catching Garza flat-flooted and coming right at him. Forte makes a nifty little move to evade Vanden Bosch and hits the hole. Kreutz and Louis, meanwhile, have double-teamed DT Williams and pushed him off the line by a couple yards, and Aromashodu has engaged LB Berry about 5 yards ahead. Looks like a big gain possible ... but DT Williams shakes off the double-team and forces Forte left, where he's met by LB Peterson, who has shaken off a secondary block by Kreutz, and brought down by a host of Lions who have suddenly converged. This play was blown up behind the line, though, when Forte was forced to pivot in order to shake off Vanden Bosch. This team just isn't good enough to hold blocks for any amount of time.

15. 2nd and 19, Cutler sacked at CHI 44 for -1 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Manumaleuna TE right (in motion). Slot receiver right, wide both sides. Olsen in backfield, Cutler under center.
Again the Lions rush only four and get moderate pressure, although the quickness with which Cutler decides to leave the pocket makes me think it's a designed rollout. By the time he gets outside the numbers, he should just heave it out of bounds, as RE Vanden Bosch has come all the way across the field and is in close pursuit. He dives at Cutler and misses, and Cutler then steps out of bounds for a one yard loss with DT Suh in his face.

16. 3rd and 20, Cutler pass deep middle to Knox INTERCEPTED by CB Berry
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Olsen TE left. Aromashodu slot left, Hester and Knowx wide. Forte in backfield and Cutler under center.
Lions only rush 4, but besides Omiyale giving the edge up to LE Avril (and perhaps getting away with a hold when Avril starts to circle back), things hold up OK. Garza and Williams double-team DT Suh to good effect, and RE Vanden Bosch gets slowed up by Louis as he tries to take the long way around his left side. Cutler just forces this one. He has the entire left side of the field to roll out to if he wants to by time, and Forte's idle right in front of him with room to run if he wants to shovel it to him. Plus, Aromashodu is open short in front of him if he decides to play for field position. But instead he stands his ground and heaves it into triple coverage, where it's picked off.

DRIVE #3, from Bears 25

17. 1st and 10, Taylor right guard to CHI 27 for 2 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Aromashodu slot right, Knox and Hester wide. Manumaleuna and Taylor in the backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off to Taylor about 4 yards deep. It appears the play is designed to go up the middle, as Manumaleuna, serving as lead blocker, takes on LB Peterson right up top and does a good job with the block. But Louis has been pushed into Taylor's way by DT Suh, forcing Taylor to find an alternate route. That's all the time the Lions need to blow up the play, and Taylor is met at the line by LB Ekejiuba, who has dodged an attempted block by Kreutz, and finished off by Suh and 3 other Lions.

18. 2nd and 8, Cutler pass deep left to Knox 32 yards to DET 41
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot right, Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Not much to say here. Williams gets beat inside by RE Vanden Bosch, but the entire defensive line bites on the play action fake to Taylor. CB Wade, covering Knox, also apparently bites on the fake, meaning that Cutler merely needs to take a few steps to his left and toss it to Knox. With no safety help in sight, Knox has a few yards to run before S Delmas makes a possible TD-saving tackle. Easiest play of the day so far for the Bears. Wish they were all like that.

19. 1st and 10, Taylor right guard to DET 33 for 8 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot right, Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off about 3 yards behind the line. A well-executed running play, as Williams ties up DT Hill while RE Vanden Bosch runs around the outside. Taylor's too quick, though, and is already by him by the time he gets there. He runs through the hole created by Williams, as DT Suh and LE Avril have played the pass rush and aren't in any position to make the stop on a run up the middle. Meanwhile, Olsen seals up Taylor's left in the second level. The only thing that prevents a big gain by Taylor on the play is when LB Berry grabs Taylor's legs a few yards past the line, although Taylor's still able to stumble forward for a few extra yards.  And all it took was one block by Williams and some quickness by Taylor to create a nice gain.

20. 2nd and 2, Cutler pass short right to Taylor for 13 yards to DET 20
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down.  Aromashodu slot left, Hester and Knox wide. Olsen motions from TE left to backfield. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Another very simple, well-executed play. LE Turk comes in untouched, but bites on the play action fake to Taylor. When Turk recovers, Cutler then simply lofts the ball over his head to Taylor, now waiting for the screen pass. With some open space, he's able to pick up an extra dozen or so yards before being brought down by LB Peterson and S Brown.

21. 1st and 10, Taylor right guard to DET 17 for 3 yards
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot left, Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler hands off about 3 yards deep to Taylor, who is already surrounded upon getting the ball. Williams and Kreutz have let their men through in order to block downfield, leaving the OL a little shorthanded. Consequently, Omiyale has to come all the way over from the right side to block DT Hill, who's lined up opposite Garza at the snap, and it's only because Hill has overrun the play that Taylor isn't stopped dead in his tracks. DT Suh has also overrun the play after blowing Louis back - it appears the Lions were expecting pass here. Taylor is able to scurry by them both. Meanwhile, Kreutz and Williams have both converged to block the middle linebacker and Aromashodu once again misses his block on CB Berry, who along with LB Peterson (left unblocked by the double-team on the MLB) bring Taylor down. Very poorly executed all around, and the Bears are lucky to pick up 3.

22. 2nd and 7, Cutler pass incomplete short left to Aromashodu
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot left, Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Nothing doing here, just a quick slant to Aromashodu. The pass is a little behind him, and Cutler leads his receiver right into the hit. Aromashodu bobbles it once before it hits the ground. Or at least it's ruled to hit the ground; I honestly can't tell if it does or not, even in slo-mo. It probably does.

23. 3rd and 7, J.Cutler pass short middle to Aromashodu for 6 yards, negated by 5 yard ILLEGAL USE OF HANDS penalty to DET 12
CB Wade called for the ticky-tack penalty, bailing the Bears out when Aromashodu is unable to dance for the 1 extra yard after making the catch just short of the first down.

24. 1st and 10, Cutler pass short right to Olsen for 4 yards to DET 8. Olsen fumbles, recovered by Detroit
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot left, Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Another simple little play, this time with Cutler in what appears to be a designed rollout and hitting Olsen at the line. Olsen turns upfield but loses the ball when hit by CB Houston. D'oh!

DRIVE #4, from Lions 43

25. 1st and 10, Forte right guard to DET 43 for no gain
Manumaleuna, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Hester in slot, Olsen and Knox wide. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Frustratingly, the OL actually gets some push on this play. Louis and Kreutz double-team DT Suh and drive him back, with Louis doing most of the work, and Garza quickly penetrates into the second level to block downfield. One of the few trench battles all day that has taken place on the Lions' side of the line. Unfortunately, Manumaleuna seems confused as to who he should block. He wisely lets RE Vanden Bosch go by on the outside, where he's little threat to the play, but then doesn't react quickly enough to get to the guy he should be blocking, LB Peterson. Peterson gets by himm and makes the tackle at the line.

26. 2nd and 10, Cutler pass short middle to Forte for 6 yards to DET 37
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Hester motions wide left to slot, twinned with Aromashodu. Knox wide right. Olsen and Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Cutler attempts a weak play action fake to Forte, but the Lions don't buy it. Immediately the pocket has collapsed around Cutler. He has to step up to avoid LE Avril, who has beaten Omiyale around the outside, but is pressured by DT Hill, who despite being engaged by Garza has penetrated six yards into the backfield. He steps up again and hits Forte, who has snuck through the line and is wide open in the middle. Meanwhile, Cutler gets creamed by RE Vanden Bosch, who has stumbled, but recovered quickly enough to get by Williams. It's just three seconds from the time the ball is snapped to the time Cutler releases, but three of the four Lions rushers have had their shot at Cutler - only Louis, who is blocking DT Suh with minimal assistance from Kreutz, has kept his man away from the QB. I suppose it goes without saying that there's no downfield blocking either, and Forte is immediately hit by CB Smith and LE Avril (not Vanden Bosch as the official PBP says).

27. 3rd and 4, Cutler pass incomplete short middle to Aromashodu
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Manumaleuna TE right. Aromashodu in right slot, Knox and Hester wide. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Garza, Kreutz, Louis and Omiyale keep both tackles contained, but both ends come around the outside on the pass rush. Williams gets away with a hold on RE Vanden Bosch, while Manumaleuna and Forte barely contain LE Avril long enough for Cutler to get the pass away. Under duress, he throws behind Aromashodu over the middle.

28. 4th and 4, PUNT

DRIVE #5, from Bears 31

29. Cutler pass short left to Olsen for 5 yards to CHI 36, negated by 10 yard HOLDING penalty to CHI 21
Manumaleuna just throws LE Avril to the ground.

30. Cutler pass deep left to Aromashodu for 21 yards to CHI 42
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale, Olsen down. Aromashodu slot left, Knox and Hester wide. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Decent job by the interior of the line. Once again, the battles are taking place five yards on the Bears side of the line, but RE Vanden Bosch, DT Suh and DT Williams are all kept away from Cutler. Omiyale, however, lets LE Avril close enough for Cutler to be lucky that the ball isn't knocked out of his hands as he throws it. Near disaster there, but he fires a perfect strike to Aromashodu in between three defenders.

31. 1st and 10, Cutler pass incomplete deep middle to Olsen
Olsen, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Aromashodu slot right, Hester and Knox wide. Forte in backfield, Cutler under center.
Once again, Louis bottles up DT Suh, while Garza keeps DT Williams busy while (Chris) Williams and Omiyale drive the ends wide of Cutler. He has time to fire deep to a streaking Olsen, but the throw is high and Olsen is covered anyway by S Delmas. Would have been a tough catch even if it was on target, but in single coverage I suppose it's worth the shot.

32. 2nd and 10, Cutler pass short middle to Knox for 15 yards to DET 43
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Olsen TE right. Forte slot left, Aromashodu slot right. Knox and Hester wide. Empty backfield, Cutler under center.
RE Vanden Bosch tries to run up through the middle, but runs into DT Suh, who's been repelled again by Louis. Garza, and Kreutz to a lesser extent, keep DT Hill at bay, while Omiyale successfully forces LE Avril around wide enough to not be a factor. With time, Cutler fires to Knox, who has found a tiny bit of space in what is apparently zone coverage. He's hit immediately by S Delmas, but hey, first down.

33. 1st and 10, Cutler pass short right to Forte for 16 yards to DET 27. Forte fumbles, recovered by Detroit
Olsen, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Hester slot right, Knox wide right. Taylor and Forte in the backfield, Cutler under center.
LE Avril is lined up wide, and at the snap Omiyale throws himself in Avril's direction, getting just enough of him to slow him down and averting disaster. This time, DT Suh beats Louis, but Cutler has Forte on a little swing to the right. Forte's able to gain yardage, thanks to an uncalled block in the back by Kreutz on CB Berry and a terrific block by Knox upfield, but is hit by S Brown and fumbles it away.

DRIVE #6, from Bears 21

34. 1st and 10, Cutler pass short middle to Forte for 9 yards, negated by 10 yard HOLDING penalty
Williams gets beat by RE Vanden Bosch to the outside, and responds by sort of horse-collaring him. Tough not to call that one. The irritating thing is that Vanden Bosch then proceeds to pull Cutler down by the legs, well after the ball was gone. Dirty play.

35. 1st and 20, Cutler pass short left to Forte for 89 yards-TOUCHDOWN
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Four receiver set, with Olsen slot right. Forte in backfield, Cutler in shotgun.
Screen pass to Forte, with the key block coming from Kreutz about six yards downfield. After that, it's all about Forte's speed.

DRIVE #7, from Lions 37

36. 1st and 10, Cutler pass incomplete short left to Aromashodu
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Aromashodu slot left, Olsen slot right. Knox and Hester wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler in shotgun.
Once again, Cutler sees his pocket folding in around him, with the primary pressure coming from LE Avril, who again beats Omiyale to the outside. RE Vanden Bosch has also pushed Williams back into Cutler's face, although Louis continues to keep DT Suh contained. Garza's also able to keep DT Hill locked up in the middle of the pile, again with minimal assistance from Kreutz. Still, Cutler has time to throw, and Aromashodu is open on the sideline, but the pass sails high. Aromashodu comes down with it, but out of bounds. Not much he could have done.

37. 2nd and 10, Cutler pass short left to Taylor for 13 yards to DET 24
Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Olsen TE right. Taylor slot left, Aromashodu slot right. Knox and Hester wide. Empty backfield, Cutler under center.
Finally, Cutler has all kinds of time, with no serious threats coming from the Lions' four-man rush. Louis, once again, keeps DT Suh locked down, this time with not even minimal assistance from Kreutz, who kind of waves his arms in their general direction but doesn't seem to do anything. It appears that DE McBride has replaced Avril on the left, and Omiyale has a much easier time with him. Williams is finally able to get position on RE Vanden Bosch, and keeps him contained. DT Hill tries an end around the edge, but gets nowhere. With all the time, Cutler steps up and finds Taylor for a first down.

38. 1st and 10, Cutler pass short left to Olsen for 11 yards to DET 13
Olsen, Williams, Garza, Kreutz, Louis, Omiyale down. Aromashodu slot right, Hester and Knox wide. Taylor in backfield, Cutler under center.
Once again, Omiyale and Williams both get beat to the outside, with Williams fortunately not being called for exactly the same hold on RE Vanden Bosch that he got penalized for earlier. The middle holds, though, with Kreutz and then Garza keeping DT Suh busy, and DT Hill getting nowhere against Louis. Cutler fires to the sideline to hit Olsen, who is pushed out by CB Wade.

39. 1st and 10, FIELD GOAL
