30 minutes of football down, 30 more minutes until this preseason is drawn to a close.  The roster cuts that will happen in the next 48 hours are a bit more clear, and we are that much closer to real football.

The question is: Will we be ready for real football?

Enjoy the 2nd Half!!

Lovie at the Half

Collins did some good things but made some mistakes with some plays and eating time outs

Told the remaining starting D that if they got a take away they could get off the field

Looking at the back side of the roster in the second half so a lot of guys will see some playing time to show case what they can do

Will have a tough time with some cuts but knows that Wolfe and Bell will make the roster as they are VERY talented………(ok that last part I made up to see if people read that)…..

Getting to know Mike Martz offense with this offensive line? It’s just hours of pure boredom interrupted by moments of unbelievable horror.

cuz he always seems (nowadays) to just quit pumping his legs the second he encounters resistance.

He doesnt stand out against these other guys that much to me. Am I wrong? I’d like to be wrong, if that means Forte will be good again.

Forte needs to quit listening to Lovie make excuses for him, and just get out there and play his heart out. THEN he’d become reacquainted with his confidence and put up some good numbers.

Bears' owners getting pounded worse than QB

It has been a rough week for Bears ownership.

First, the Bears were dubbed the NFL’s most neglected brand by Forbes magazine. The scorching report labeled the Bears as “financial flatliners,” noting that despite their high national recognition factor, the franchise placed ninth in the magazine’s NFL valuations rankings with a worth of $1.07 billion. That made them the lowest-ranked large-market team, ranking behind even the small-market Baltimore Ravens.

Now Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports is piling on, applying the kind of heat that Jay Cutler usually feels when he fades back to pass. In his fifth annual NFL owner rankings, the Bears are fifth from the bottom, with the only worse ownerships being (from the bottom up) the Raiders, Bengals, Lions and Browns.

In noting that Michael McCaskey will step down as chairman at the end of
this season, Silver writes that he “will leave behind a financial state
of affairs that, in relative terms, can best be described as flaccid.”

“It’s just mismanagement,” one NFL owner says. “They really should be
the tops in revenue, ahead of Dallas. Someday someone else will get a
hold of that thing and it’ll be a monster.”

But as Silver observes, that isn’t likely to happen any time soon, given the McCaskeys’ pledge to retain ownership of the franchise for the foreseeable future.

This last game specifically

I don’t care about whatsoever. Everyone who played the majority of the game may not even make the opening game roster. We’ve seen a total of probably 3 quarters of starters, regardless of how bad they may have looked that is no where near enough time to already be having a heart attack and giving up on the entire season.

Cutler’s bad decisions. The inadequate blocking. Poor pass rush. Ineffective coverage. Injuries to key players. Yet you can only say, “it’s only pre-season.” That’s not an argument, that’s wishful thinking.

That's not what I'm saying at all

I’m saying that seeing a total of about 3 quarters of the starters does not give me enough information about this team to already completely give up on this season, like I’ve said about 3 times now. If they play 4 quarters of terrible football against the lowly Lions, maybe I’ll accept your premature white flag on this season, but not quite yet.

I am not saying the season is lost either, but I am saying that I have not seen anything positive from the offense, defense or ST that makes me say, “…that’s what the Bears do well.” If you have a rationale to support your argument, please share it. For me, I’m encouraged by Olsen’s TD grab. I think Martz realizes the weapon he has in Olsen. I know they didn’t play the cream of the Browns (eww…) but that dive told me he wants to be a reliable guy as a receiver. I think he’ll be fine as Jay’s safety valve. Rash Davis looked like a competent receiver tonight (except on his drop…).

I’m not thrilled by our walking game. Forte didn’t play, but everyone else couldn’t put up a 3 YPC combined tonight.

I’m convinced the season can pretty much only be won by Jay’s arm and ability to escape large angry men.

How can you be encouraged by one man's performance (Olsen) in a meaningless game.

Yet not completely freaked out that when our starters played for more than 1/2 we still looked like dog shit on my sneakers after I mow the lawn? And Jay got sacked TEN TIMES in less than 1 complete game. Good luck with his arm and ability….

They're big ifs, I know...

But usually, the sacker’s on him too fast – I don’t recall any of the sacks he’s taken necessarily being “coverage” sacks. If he just buys himself some more time, I think the targets are there for him, especially that Olsen TD at the back of the endzone. If Collins can do that, Jay can easily.

I’m not attacking you, and I know it’s not all rosy (Good GOD can we look like a competent rushing game for once? >_< 2.6 YPC), but I think as far as Jay was concerned, the parts around him looked a little better. Davis played his way onto the squad for sure and Iglesias (!) got himself wide open for a big gain. I was fine with the WR/TEs in general, routes looked good, players got open. I know it’s backups but recognizing what to take advantage of is a thing regardless who you’re up against.

I haven't seen a whole lot of positives from this preseason, as most of us haven't

but I still have faith that Cutler can click with this offense and I’m still looking forward to watching Knox and Aromashadu in their second season with this team, both have great potential. Peppers is one player that has looked very solid in the preseason and the running game, despite the terrible, terrible o-line, has played well. So yeah we’ve played pretty terribly in the offseason, but I have seen a few things and am really looking forward to seeing some more positives once the football games that actually mean something start.

Fair enough...

I just wanted to argue/discuss an actual point. I agree many people are ledge surfing here. IMO, the current evidence weighs in their favor. This team has not looked good in any facet of play. We can chalk up offensive woes to the new coordinator/scheme/players, but the defense is almost beyond excuse. These guys have played this defense for years, many years in some cases. The ST is scary bad as well. I agree the team may coalesce by mid-season, but i see it as too little, too late.

As long as your smart enough to stay away from the bookies

its just a game.
Some people around here are -7 only happy if they have something to b*tch about.
Others want to see & think the best about their favorite team.

It has nothing to do with science, logic or the price of pork bellys.

Have you taken a good look at our schedule? take Detroit out and our opponents had an average 9-7 season last year and Detroit is a lot better this year.

preseason games mean squat, as far as wins & losses its about evaluating players and getting the basics down.

If you want some good news the D-line is better even without Sgt. Pepper. Major Wright can play and we will have #54 back.

I wish I knew what to expect from the offense, but I have a hard time thinking they will be worse than last year.

Personally I wasn't thrilled with our running game at all.

If Forte goes down, Taylor better be able to step up like he’s being paid to or the walking game looks like it’ll go nowhere.

As far as running goes

I actually like Taylor better, cause he seems more reliable in between the tackles.

So...

Wolfe was outplayed by Bell; bye bye Hamsta! Gilbert looks like he’s got a career in pool jumping. Q Scott is a PS guy, not a roster maker. R Davis outplayed Iglesias. Iwuh will make the roster, Malast will not. Final cuts coming soon. Don’t see many surprises.

OK, on a serious note,

The punter is not so much influenced by what string he’s playing with (aside from longsnapper), so here’s an honest question.

Is it time to replace Brad Maynard? He doesn’t seem to have the distance anymore. At all. His punts are puny and sometimes wayyy off target (out of bounds). It’s the kind of position we could replace 3 or 4 games into the season.

I say, Thanks Brother Maynard; it’s been swell. Happy Trails.

Let’s get us a punter who won’t be a liability, even if he’s not a game changer like the Chargers’ Mike Scifres.

With..

all the glaring holes on this team…you are worried about the punter? Even if he’s about average, what do you suggest the Bears do? What better punter is available?

I guess what I'm saying is, let's keep our eyes peeled for one.

Because it’s not crucial that he be there from the beginning of the season, let’s put him on the shopping list and be ready when/if the opportunity arises.

The way we’re playing, we can’t afford to give our opponents favorable field position. So we need some scouts checking out Arena, Europe, UFA, wherever those guys go when they don’t get signed.

I totally agree that the punter isn’t the most critical thing. It just might be one of the easier ones to solve, and I haven’t heard anybody else bring it up, so I wanted to see if I’m the only one thinking we could use an upgrade.

He may not have the same booming kicks he used to

but he’s still kinda serviceable. Agree that we should keep our eyes open, but dropping him isn’t crucial at the moment. Like STL said, we have a few other agenda items first.

it WAS admittedly pretty fast thinking of him to convert that terrible snap into a safety instead of a TD a few weeks ago.

I actually like Brother Maynard (I call him that after the Monty Python character—with the holy hand grenade of antioch, etc). Maybe that’s why i do feel like it’s a big deal to see him slowing down a bit.

I mean, sure we need an O-Line and some RB help and a new coach and new management. But a new punter is cheap enough and isolated enough to be do-able without all the rest coming to pass first.

Just because I can’t afford a new car now doesn’t mean i won’t buy new floormats for the one I have.
