Wow.....

Were those some nice things being said about the Bears by National Media Guys? Will wonders never cease? I’ll bet that King threw up twice while writing that…….

Which seems ridiculous to me

You can’t write off a team forever because you were wrong about them. A lot of people overestimated the Bears last year but as a sports writer you can’t take that and then just pick against them or bash them or whatever forever after because that is just stupid and people won’t take you seriously. How can you write about any team objectively or just in general if you are mad at them or whatever? That’s just incredibly stupid.

I didn't take it like that.

What was the question marks for the Bears in 2008?

A: Quarterback, WRs, and OL

I think King bought the idea that having a talented QB (Cutler) with all that high-potential talent on offense (Hester, Olsen, Forte, etc) and with a healthy defense that featured several veterans from the 2006 Championship year…

… The Bears could compete with any team in the NFC.

He also probably bought the fact that Pace would set the tone on the left side with Williams and Omiyale to his right.

NO ONE predicted the Saints to be good that year, right? The VIkings were high in his rankings, but he thought the Bears and Viking were mirror images.

Once he saw that Cutler had some inconsistencies in his game, he knew that he had “spoke to soon” on the Bears.

I think this year, there were a lot of question marks that we ALL discussed on this very website. How could he put them in the top ten? Top half, even?

Fun tracker for the season...

Someone (I am probably going to this week or next) should build a tracker (I will share it with any writer who wants it) to see where current Bears players are in regards to eclipsing team records for Passing and Receiving in regards to Single Game, Single Season and Career as we watch the “Martzfence” grow and take over. I am probably going to excel it or something tonight.

As a starter, some Career numbers:

PASSING (400+ attempts)
QB Rating: 80.7 Erik Kramer
Passing Yards: 14,686 Sid Luckman
300+ Yard Games: 9, Bill Wade
Completions: 1023 Jim Harbaugh
Passing Touchdowns: 137 Sid Luckman
Completion Percentage: 61.1% Shane Matthews
Yards per Attempt: 8.42 Sid Luckman
TD Percentage: 7.9% Sid Luckman
Interception Percentage (lowest): 2.7% Jim Miller

Cutler, so far (two sets, Total and w/Bears only)
Passing Yards: 13,339 yards (4315 with Bears)
300+ Yard Games: 13 (4 with Bears)
Completions: 1142 (380 with Bears)
Passing Touchdowns: 86 (32 with Bears)
Completion Percentage: 62.1% (61.39% with Bears)

That’s my first take, I have all the stats already but don’t want to post a “mega-post”

I think a lot of Chicagoians need to heed the words of this guy...

… And ease up on the kool-aid just a bit. It’s still very early.

But, it is good to see these guys playing as a team and with “a chip on their shoulder” again. I really lik the development of Cutler and I hope that this year is a season of growth for him.

Week 3 is a statement game; not so much a proving game. If they lose, then the national media will be ALL OVER the Chicago Bears proverbial “jock strap”. If they lose, it really doesn’t mean they are a bad team— just the better team won that evening.

True.

You can also bring up the 3-1 start last season too.

However, the schedule is equally tough for the Packers, Lions, and the Vikings through weeks 4-12.

With the Bears having one divisional game up on Detroit and (hypothetically) Packers, it will provide a bit of a cushion for a team who will face marginal teams in weeks 5,6, and 8.

I'm trying to remain cautiously optomistic too

Because of that 3-1 start last year and I think you can draw a lot of comparisons between then and now. For example, the Seahawks game last year was a lot like the Lions game this year and the Cowboys game this year was similar to the Steelers last year.

That being said, however, I think that this year’s team is playing much better and has a lot more confidence than last year and I think the upside going into week 3 is much better.

Offense is a lot more consistent

That’s been the big difference from last year, in my opinion.

The defense looks stout too. Last year, those variables weren’t present. The Bears played desperate to me.

At week 2 though, DT?

I’m more concerned about the Pack and if the Bears can pull of 9 wins in a make-or-break season for Jerry & Co.

The city of Chicago has been very optimistic about the positive effect that Martz has had on Jay “Big Investment” Cutler and the offensive scheme as-a-whole…

… And, then he tries to deflate the one thing fans are optimistic about. In week 2!? Where was this in the preseason, if he was so concerned (Hint: It wasn’t! He was talking about how he was going to fail.)

It’s sad that “THAT” is his M.O. almost every article…

In the meantime, doesn’t everyone in the NFL already know who Martz is? It’s not like he’s some up and comer, auditioning for a head coaching position. He’s Mike Martz., for crissakes.

I DID read Morrissey, and don’t let the headline fool ya’. He’s not admitting any mistakes, or REALLY making any “recalculations”…He’s willing to admit, that ‘a lot’ of people will have to eat crow IF they beat the Packers.

Packers and Cowboys

both use the 3-4 defense – I think this is good for our offensive line to play similar defenses two weeks in row.

'similar'

but a completely different style… dom capers is predicated about blitzing from all angles, two gap style, whereas wade phillips is more of a one gap, 3-4 hybrid style, less blitzing… they’re ‘similar’, but very different schemes, akin to comparing our 4-3 to the Giant’s 4-3.

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

by awfullyquiet on Sep 21, 2010 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Isn't Capers's D more conservative on first and second downs than Phillips's? Keep it out of third and long

and they won’t blitz as much as a Phillips team?

Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?
Neil Paine, basketball-reference.com

by snley on Sep 21, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

sorta. it's a year to year thing, but there's other major differences.

often phillips only sends 1 LB in at a time, yes, that’s a ‘blitz’, but, it’s more like a 4 man rush with a 1 gap DL than anything else… phillips style 3-4 is really more of a 3-4/4-3 hybrid than anything else, you see a lot of 5-2, 4-6 sets… but more often than not, only one LB is blitzing, whether it’s Merriman or Ware. From the offensive line standpoint it’s very different, as the DL is meant to penetrate and disrupt the backfield in phillip’s 3-4.

In Capers 3-4 though, its a bit different, as they’re sometimes playing two gap, sometimes playing one gap, overload zone blitzs, that generally phillips doesn’t call, is a common playcall in capers (and dick lebeau’s) 3-4. it’s a confusion defense, meant to confuse the linemen, and put pressure on the quarterback to read the zones. in capers you’re looking to find where the blitz is coming from, react, and address it. inside blitzes, overload blitzes… when you have the personnel to pull this off (as your linemen have to be amazingly flexible), it’s scary good (see pittsburgh’s last 2 weeks, and for that matter, GB has been doing spectacular at it).

so to sum it up, it’s very different from a ‘reading the defense’ and linemen blocking situation. yes they both blitz a lot, but, in very different ways, from very different looks.

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

by awfullyquiet on Sep 21, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Not sure about that

In theory yes, but I saw a lot of blitzing by Dallas well into the second quarter by DBs and LBs. GB may be a bit reluctant to go “all out” like Phillips did based on how the short pass countered it effectively

"They form a huddle- Whisper like they want trouble- I melt the ice grills into rainwater puddles- Make the proud-hearted leave on the humble- Black steel in the hour- Assemble my skill form my power" - Mos Def

by propheteer on Sep 21, 2010 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

i guess the major thing that separates the two is that...

phillips style defenses tend to have an LB that acts like a down lineman consistently. if it was a 4-3, it wouldn’t be a blitz, but a 4 man rush. yes, phillips brings pressure from DB and LB’s (clearly), but, schematically, it’s more of a ‘typical’ 3-4 style, where the OLB’s are the focus of the pass rush, from the outside, where lebeau/capers style is zone blitz.

to the OP’s statement though, i don’t believe facing 2 3-4 teams, in 2 different schemes is an ‘advantage’, unless it was like, facing denver followed by new england. or green bay and pittsburgh, because, it’s like saying facing the giants defense is like facing the saints defense… and it’s useful to face 2 4-3 teams in a row.

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

by awfullyquiet on Sep 21, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

The look is similar though

Maybe the coverage is a bit different, but I like our receivers chances if GB is more of a zone team. Martz’s pass to a spot design should be able to counter if given a little time.

But, I don't think that's the case.

I think there is still this belief, for most people, that the newspapers and newscasts are to share with you the information and details that you need to know throughout the day. Before the internet and the wealth of information that was thrown at you, you turned to the papers to get your facts and information on subjects— like the Chicago Bears.

Now, with everyone having a website, blog, Twitter account— any and everyone can have an opinion and can sell you their brand of opinion. Although there is some truth to these venues (Twitter sometimes is faster than the actual news), people would “like” to believe that the prints have a level of professionalism and integrity that is GREATER than the 14-year old on Twitter saying that “The Bears suck!” with no reason behind it.

I commented on Haugh’s article in today’s Trib, because it’s almost a “doom and gloom” article in a time when there is nothing really there. “Sure!” he can talk about the offensive lines woes, but everyone has talked about that to great depths (Hell? We do here!). He can talk about the near defeat in week 1, but fans have moved past that as well. He can talk about Lovie, but by everyone’s accounts— the Bears called a good game on Sunday.

There is nothing really “negative” to comment on about the Chicago Bears…

… And it’s Tuesday! haha!?

So, what does he do?

He warns Bears fans to prepare for the departure of Mike Martz in 2011 two weeks into the regular season.

Yep! He criticized him all through the preseason and in the same sentence that he gives him praise, he “smacks him” with an insult.

Now, he praises him for two weeks of games and essentially tells Bears fans: “He’ll be gone in 2011 and then what are you going to do, Chicago!?”

Point is— It’s not authentic! And it gives his craft a bad name. And there are A LOT of news anchors, news agencies, and writers that fit that bill.

didn't have your post

In mind when making the comment, more thinking of all the “omg how are they poweranked x when they are so good” comments from the last couple weeks. Which popped up again below. Nothing wrong with not liking an article.

Last night my friend(who is just now starting to get in to the NFL)

Asked me why ESPN and other networks haven’t talked about how the Bears have “won” their games, but how the Lions and Cowboys simply “lost” them. Told him I really didn’t know, but I honestly didn’t care b/c we’re 2-0 and they’re not.

Anyone else see the call on Terrell Suggs play...

where he got flagged for “roughing the passer” against Palmer? What the hell?!?

Bullshit call IMO.

Lewis was pissed after the game, I can’t really blame him. He got called for a tripping penalty after he was blocked to the ground, rolled, and Palmer “tripped” over Lewis’ feet, which eventually led to a field goal I believe and the loss. I hate to blame the refs, but they kind of boned the Ravens Sunday.

Complete crap......

On both the Suggs call and the Lewis call. For those that missed the COMPLETELY BOTCHED CALLS, here is the Suggs Roughing Call and here is the Lewis Tripping Call. Is it me, or does the refereeing seem worse this season than normal, especially in the area of calling (or not calling) roughing the QB and other infractions revolving around harassing the QB?

Mon night

To convince the national media, we have to win that game Mon. night. GB is a lot of these magazines’ Super Bowl pick and if we beat them the tone of these comments by Chris Berman and everyone else might just change to,“Wow, Chicago looked really impressive the way they dominated GB” or something to that effect. Then there won’t be any “Detroit and Dallas lost” anymore. They’ll have to talk about a 3-0 team who never got any credit before. A 1st place team, and that sounds good to me.

Been following WCG for about a year and am excited about this year thus far…I know we can beat GB but the night games always make me nervous. Thanks for great website, very entertaining and informative. Go Bears!!!

Don't be Afraid of being a lady

There are plenty of knowledgeable women posters on here, including our regulars HoneyBear (my g/f) and Allie.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

"We feel very good about this football team. We felt very good about our football teams in the past and it's no different. You've got to go out there and you've got to do it."
