Tuesday Morning Hangover: Bears Sit Atop NFC

CHICAGO - SEPTEMBER 27: Brian Urlacher #54 of the Chicago Bears gestures at the line of scrimmage against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field on September 27 2010 in Chicago Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Media perception and/or respect for the Chicago Bears is not something that ever concerns me, but it does make me chuckle when I woke up this morning with emails from my friends that tell me the Bears didn't win last night - the Packers just gave it away.

It make me chuckle because those same emails came after the victory over the Lions, and the win over the Cowboys. And, that's fine.  There are some things the Bears do not do very well, but there are other things that indicate we may actually be a legitimate force in the National Football League.  Honestly, I'm not completely sold on us yet, so let those emails keep rolling in.  For now.

no matter who we beat every week they said… the bears havent played anybody, or the team we played beat themselves.
on an interesting note they also said our defense carried us through games.

If it doesn't favor the Packers, Don Banks is against it.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

Lots of hating there, for sure

But the Cutler stuff? I dunno…it seemed pretty spot on.

The guy’s had a great first 2 weeks, no doubt. But last night was a little rough to watch. He keeps throwing off his back foot and it’s driving me nuts.

We furreal

It don’t matter how you win the game.
A win is a win. And ya know you gotta give credit to Cutler for sticking in there and playin man. He’s a baller.
How bout my boy hester? He’s the real deal man. Ya know ain’t no one do it better than him. As soon as he got the ball i said “He gone” and he was gone.
The Pack played a good game but they still ain’t on the Bears level ya know. We number 1 in the NFC right now, and we ain’t goin down soon. The Giants next. We gonna demolish them. Ain’t no one in the NFC can touch us.

I don't listen to the media anymore.

Want to talk about the Packers giving the game away? How about the Bears not blowing them out. If they didn’t forget about 1 missed FG and a dropped TD, all the so called “analysts” would be saying the Bears are for real.

I'm eating a nice bowl of crow this morning..... tastes great:)

Peppers was unreal last night. I have not seen a Bears defensive performance like that in years.
Jennings just catapulted up the depth chart with his play… that dude had a great night.

My only beef: Mike Ditka needs to call Mike Martz and tell him to put Halas’ QB sneak into the friggin playbook.

While I do agree...

to a point. The Bears have to be aware that they will not always get those calls, justified or not. The Bears were lucky to be at home and playing aggressively. I do believe the Bears made their own good fortune in the penalties department by forcing the issue and playing hard for that matter. It’s not about “deserving” a win, but seeing the places where improvements can be made so they won’t have to rely on favorable calls to win because it won’t matter. Still it’s nice to win either way and many of those calls were made because the Packers were being outplayed and over matched. It was refreshing to see the Bears defense beat up on other teams for a change. It’s been missing for the last few seasons!

We are a legitimate contender in the NFC at this point...

not because I’m completely sold on the Bears but I don’t see any other team in the NFC (actually, the entire NFL) that is great. Even the Saints could easily be 1-2 at this point.

The Bears players are playing with as much passion and heart as anyone in the league and their stars are playing like stars. Like any NFL team, the health of our key players down the stretch will dictate how far we go as well as if the older players (Kreutz, Urlacher, Peppers), who are playing great right now, can sustain things for 16 games and playoffs.

Lovie has to stop making stupid decisions because it will cost us at some point. That’s the one area where I have to agree with some of the talking heads that we have been “lucky”. The two 4th down calls against the Lions and Packers probably should have us at 1-2 (0-2 in the division) but the bad rule and a great play by Urlacher and Briggs saved Lovie’s stupid a$$ on those. That said, all winning teams have a certain amount of luck go their way, so I don’t begrudge the Bears for that but if Lovie keeps trying to give away points, the luck will run out.

We need to eliminate those errors, then we could be thrashing teams!

by Mathias-K on Sep 28, 2010 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep... we left 10 points on the field last night.

Fortunately… the Packers made many more mistakes than we did. Love that yellow flag!

But, we have to stop making these poor decisions. We’ve taken better care of the ball than we did in the opener vs the Lions. And that ball security is giving us scoring opportunities.. that we keep finding ways to muff up.

Not only are we a contender

but look at our schedule the next 5 games, all very winnable. And they have to be because our home stretch is brutal. All we have to do is finish 7-6 over the last 13 games and we go 10-6.

I agree, but while we're 3-0, we haven't played well enough to assume we can automatically beat anyone.

This team has to play each of these games against the “weaker opponents” like they’re playoff games or we could just as easily be looking up at the Packers in a few weeks.

I know a lot of the media complain about parity in the league, but I like it. It’s much more interesting to me to watch games where either team can win than boring blowouts by the Patriots, Colts, etc. This season is going to be interesting.

Is this team like 2001 or 2006?

I mean I don’t want to jump to conclusions and say we’ll end up 13-3 but is it luck or skill at this point? I always enjoyed that 2001 season because it was fluke after fluke and it was hilarious every time. When they lost I was just kind of like, “Yep, that makes sense.” 2006 was a heartbreaker though. Thought they could have won it all. They got lucky last night. Wonder how this season will play out.

i said it before and i'll say it again

This is the year Cutler smashes just about every Bear passing record, if the o-line can step up a lil better than they did yesterday, (1 of the sacks was a coverage one i believe) we will be in great shape, and i thought they actually didn’t do all that bad..i’ve definetly seen worse but i would like a little more consistency in the passing protection and a lot more improvement in the run blocking.

Better "lucky" than good

Screw the media. If a team we play makes mistakes and loses, it’s them giving to us. If we win and make mistakes, Oh the humanity, everything was gift wrapped and sitting on platters etc.

Both teams played with a lot of mistakes. We capitalized and won. So if the media claims we only win because we are lucky, oh well. Get the 4 leaf clovers and rub away, I’ll take those “lucky” wins all the way everyday!

Packers FS Nick Collins was seen throwing an unknown object at a Bears’ fan while leaving the field following the Packers’ 20-17 loss.

Fox 6 Sports Milwaukee is reporting that Collins was provoked by a fan who spat his way and called him a racist expletive, promoting Collins to “go crazy” and “attack”. The station reportedly has video of the incident that can’t be shown until Tuesday due to NFL guidelines. Stay tuned for more.

My thoughts:
  • Hester looks like his confidence is back. One near-runback and one TD runback is beautiful. Punter outkicking his coverage is bad news for the punter. Watch if Hester comes out bouncing and skipping like he used to; if that happens, look out NFC.
  • How weird is it that Jennings misses the tackle… and is right there for the fumble recovery. Goat to hero on the same play. Oh, props to Urlacher for, you know, forcing the fumble.
  • Should we just copy and paste the thread from the Detroit game about Lovie going for it on fourth while trailing?
  • Ladies and gentlemen, your leading rusher for the game (Not just Bears, but game): Jay Cutler! (3-37) So unless we’re dragging out the Falcons playbook of Vick and Dunn, can we shelve this idea of “We get off the bus running” for good now?
  • I’ve never seen a player dominate a game so completely while doing so little statistically. If only Peppers had some support on the line.
  • Aside from Greg Jennings (2 receptions on 6 targets), most receiving targets, if they were targeted, they were catching it: Finley 9-9, Driver 9-11, Jones 5-5 (and one key fumble), Jackson 4-4, Nelson 3-4, Kuhn 2-2… We have to cover better. That’s it.
  • Speaking of Kuhn… Kuhn’s a fullback masquerading as a part-time RB cause of the Grant injury… Why are we letting him bash his way down the field for 18 yards?
  • Attention Packers Fans. If you have 18 penalties, it does not necessarily mean the refs are out to get you; it means you were badly undisciplined, overly aggressive, and/or randomly throwing the ball forward when you shouldn’t be… Like on a Stanford Band-On-The-Field Lateral Session.

Great win

but Cutler looked like last year Cutler. He was constantly forcing the ball downfield. When he threw that pick towards Olsen, he had Knox wide open in the flat. Too many forced throws. That last PI call was a terrible decision by him. You can’t count on that PI being called in that situation. Peppers is unreal. Urlacher was great. Briggs is a hitter. Line is still poor. Can’t run and Cutler was getting killed. It says a lot about the Bears that they don’t play their best football and still win the game. Oh yeah, Hester was great on the returns and completely destroyed Hawk on a block. I can’t remember the play but he was awesome.

by McRipper on Sep 28, 2010 8:33 AM CDT reply actions

I still see Jay Cutler as a fit for what the Bears want to do with their multiple breaking routes, the skinny post, the deep 15-yard dig, slants over the middle in tight space.

But, there is always going to be some risk involved. He has no issue challenging the secondary or throwing off of his back foot into coverage. Will give the ball away and make a big play as well. The INT he threw in the end zone was a drive killer and the seam route he threw to TE Greg Olsen helped set up the winning field goal for the 3-0 Bears.

You take the good with the bad with Jay Cutler.

Get our due!

If you ask me, it is time for our Chicago Bears to get some respect from the sports media! We beat Dallas, and all you hear is the Cowgirls played bad. Beat the Packers and same thing! Do any of these loads ever consider that the team on the opposite side of the ball may have something to do with the Cowboys or Packers poor performance? I saw several holding calls on Peppers last night that would have been sacks. Maybe these calls are BETTER than the sack?

I didn’t have a problem with putting Tommie down to prove a point but what the hell could Aromashadu have done to get so far into the doghouse? I agree totally with you about Wooten, at least see what he’s got. The Mark Anderson experiment has gotten old.

Bennett is favored more than Aroma in the line up, since as we’ve seen in the past Bennett can take a hit.

And Bennett doesn't drop the ball 3 times a game.

The reason I’ve seen around the web for DA being inactive last week was that the coaching staff didn’t like how he graded out of the Lions game, and were unhappy with his 3 drops. Bennett then played clutch in the Dallass game, and that dropped DA down the depth chart.

I see the staff giving him another chance sooner rather than later, but he has to learn to hang onto the ball. Dropping three of 10 targets is a good way to get benched, I guess.

I think it goes down to more of the fact the the Bears have no stand out WR and Lovie or Martz could be disappointed with the drops from the Lions game or they could feel that Bennett in this situation is a better fit versus the type of D they are facing. I think Aroma would match up pretty well against the Giants secondary so maybe we’ll see more of him next week.

I just want the coaching staff to put the right guys on the field that can and will make plays. Knox had 4 catches for 94 yards, would like to see what happens when he has a break out game.

DA had a great game against the Packers last year at the end of the season

so I would have thought the matchups would have favored him last night. I’m not saying he should be ahead of anyone else but I just think one bad game shouldn’t dictate your feelings for the guy forever. Hell, if that were the case, Cutler should have been benched after the 49’ers game last year.

I think the guy still gives you something no one else on the roster can and that’s size in the Red Zone. Let’s not throw it away on the basis of one game and even in that Lions game, he did make some very good plays as well.

Penalties on the Packers OL & "The Julius Peppers Effect"

Eighteen total penalties!?

Holding calls, false starts, pass interference and the personnel fouls.

VERY undisciplined football and bad technique from the offensive line against the Bears front four rush. Julius Peppers looked the part. How many holding calls did he force? Quick off the edge and had an impact in the run game.

And WHERE O’ WHERE was Tommie Harris last night?

… I smell the end of the myth that is 3-gap technique beast “Tommie Harris” in Chicago.

I know what you mean. Another night game, and the Bears generally don't play well at night.

The only thing we have going for us is that the sports media is still dissing the Bears and saying they’re just lucky. This Bears haven’t played very well the past 4 years when being praised in the media. They take it to heart and start acting like the Cowboys and Packer have this year, thinking that they can just throw a switch.

by BigGeorgeTX on Sep 28, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Well this is definetly a trap game

But i have watched all 3 giants games so far this year. Even in the win they are looking very very spotty on offense and Defense. On offense they are getting a lot of penalties for false starts and holdings..cough cough Peppers coming to town. Eli and Co. have had some minor success with Bradshaw but seem to always get pushed back from a penalty or find themselves in a 3rd and long and fail to complete the conversion.

Also, i have never seen so many receivers on one team drop balls as much as they do. They not only drop them, they let it bounce off their hands and into a defender’s hands.

The defense..has been suspect as well. not sure who said it earlier but their linebacker corps cannot hold a candle to ours and they dont have a dominant pass rusher either..right now their pass rush is looking very pedestrian.

If the Giants can get it together for our game then it will still be close, If they can’t we will win decisively!

by Chitownproduct on Sep 28, 2010 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

we're def. gonna have to chip Peppers with TEs and RBs

The only saving grace for our LT is that Peppers is not a pure speed rusher like Freeney, so he won’t be getting beat off the corner over and over again.

i would say that we have a consistent pass rusher right now in mathias kiwanuka, who has 4 sacks on the season. our DC has been moving him around everywhere(LB, DE, DT) so i’m sure you’re coaches will be studying some tape on this week. Tuck is still Tuck, but he’s been more stout in the run game than in the passing game. as a matter of fact, our run D has been pleasantly good IMO. the stats lie here a little, because although we gave up 125 to CJ last week, it took him 32 carries to do it. and he didn’t get started til the 4th quarter, where he was avg. under 3 per before that. week 2 our DC made the mistake of setting our lineup strictly to stop the pass, leaving only one LB on the field, and one DT, for most of the game. Peyton saw this and audibled to run over and over again, and Addai got off. Game 1 we held the wonder Twins in Carolina down all game.

Gonna be an interesting game, glad its in the Jersey!

I just hope you guys get it together, the NFC East is gonna be wide open this year, you can tell already. The division games are really going to test the Giants mettle this year and i think you all have the advantage on those for the most part, Philly, only time will tell if they are really the truth this year, not buying it so far with wins in Detroit and Jacksonville.

Jeremiah Finley is the REAL DEAL!

Dude was a aatchup problem wherever he lined up on the field!?

He was on the line and blew up LBs, he was in the “X” and beat NBs down the field, and he was down field in the seam and Safeties couldn’t tackle him. He had his way against the Bears’ Cover 2 defense, but what is more impressive is what he can do running underneath routes

There are so many options you have as an offense when the TE is as dynamic as Finley is in the passing game.

He is a problem! Great game by him!

We all need to pump the breaks a little...

Sure we’re 3-0 and sit atop the division/ conference, with two of our “biggest” games behind us. However, for as much good as we’ve seen, there’s equally as much to be concerned about.

I’m excited, and impressed a little, that for as bad as we were playing the first half, we went in only down by three. However, some of Jay’s throws throughout the entire game, but especially on that last drive, made me cringe. And playing an undisciplined team (body slam on Forte?) that commits 18 penalties, without a running game, at home, after winning the TO ratio, and only winning by three is definitely concerning.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited… just trying to stay realistic about it. If everyone wants the media to change their minds on this team, we definitely need a statement win on Sunday night.

Allow us to savor this a bit though?

I certainly can understand your warning about drinking to heavy from the “juice bowl”, but this was a big victory coming off of a victory [Dallas] that not too many analysts gave the Bears credit for. It was a big game that will certainly thrust the team into the talks of “team to beat” on a national media level.

I think you have to savor this victory a bit, because of just how good a game it was against oir longtime rival. Even if the Bears were 0-2 before this game, I think it would be a very meaningful win.

I think fans are more excited about the Bears beating the Packers more than thinking it means championship.

You're right

There was a lot to cringe about, but there’s a lot to be happy about too.

Cutler seemed mostly reined in apart from the throw to Olsen and that last drive. I think over the last three weeks we’ve seen a lot of growth from our quarterback.

The O-Line looked fairly serviceable last night, especially in the second half. Clay Matthews who? If all we’re asking them to do is keep the pressure off Jay’s back, with Jay’s mobility you aren’t asking them to do a ton.

Not only did Hester return a TD, I think we’re seeing more of his growth at WR. Even though it was out of bounds, seeing him go up for the ball was a thing of beauty.

The defense has to cover the short balls better, Green Bay was dinking and dunking and missed-tackle-hopping up and down the field all night long.

by Steven Schweickert on Sep 28, 2010 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

One guy who kind of got lost in all the attention that Peppers, Hester, Urlacher, and Cutler deservedly received was...

Johnny Knox. Over the last couple of weeks he has come up with some big plays that have helped make drives and turn momentum around. There have been a couple of times where he and Jay don’t seem to be on the same page but you can say that about all the receivers including Olsen. Knox is becoming a very reliable, big play guy.

You know a good deal of those penalties

were holding calls that were result of pressure. I’m tired of the "Packers gave the game away " stuff. I didn’t hear much of that in our defense last year when Cutler was throwing ball games away and Forte was fumbling in the red zone. All I heard was that the Bears sucked. Well you know what? A SB team doesn’t commit 18 penalties. A Superbowl team plays discipline football and wins. That’s what the Bears have done.

Yeah but it worked!

I didn't have a problem with the 4th down call.

The Bears came out with their BIG package and had Olsen, Clark, and Malemanuna on the line with Taylor and Forte in the backfield.

They then shifted to show a different look to make the Capers defensive unit “think twice”…

… The Green Bay defense didn’t adjust and TE Desmond Clark was uncovered, had a free release off of the line of scrimmage and just needed a “bit” taken off of the throw from QB Jay Cutler and we are talking about a TD.

Gutsy call, but not a bad one.

We did this debate two weeks ago

and I’d rather not have the argument again…

I understand going for it on fourth and short, and I especially understand it when you’re in the opponent’s territory. The part that I hate about it is when it’s a risk taken from behind.

Lovie gambled twice, the first time he got bailed out twice by a putrid Lions offense. This time he got bailed out by Devin. The field position argument possibly works against the Lions; they weren’t moving it at all. Green Bay was dinking and dunking and missed-tackle-hopping all night long, and they were moving the ball far more effectively. This wasn’t an unprepared Shaun Hill, this was Aaron Freaking Rodgers.

Over three games, we’ve not proven we can get one yard when we have to, and with an opponent who was moving the ball as well as Green Bay was, I would rather not take the risk, and take the points. I know very well what your stats say, you posted them before in that very thread. Just personal preference based on what I was watching.

I'll believe

when with a lead in the 4th quarter the Bears run the ball down the opponents throat.
However, until then there’s a lot to like about this team. Defense and special teams are pretty darn good. Winning cures a lot of ills. The run game and red zone offense need to improve.

On Moon's Report Card

I find the glaring omission of the poor redzone coverage by urlacher disheartining, yes, he played a good game… but the LB’s weren’t all that solid in coverage, at all. Missing tackles. Yes the pursuit was good… but, jeez, they have to tighten up and tackle.

I disagree....

I thought the same as Quiet did. 54 was late into the break and left room for the throw, though it took a great throw to get it there.. It’s a rare coverage lapse by Urlacher, but it was definitely a lapse. That said, I don’t think it was that bad. Obviously neither did Quiet, as he still grades them a B-, which is the same place I would put them. Some of the tackling was disturbing, especially from Brian and Lance. You just don’t expect that. You Don’t expect Tim Jennings to be the best tackler in a game.

Answer: To bring up pitching prospects.

… And baseball contracts are TOTALLY different than football ones, Bears fan.

Tommie Harris has had the same “mental” problems that Haynesworth had—true enough.

But, he also has had multiple knee injuries and he is a “speed” rusher. Haynesworth has had injury, but more so from being out of shape and not being in “playing” mentality.

He has value, but the Redskins refuse to just give that away.

The only thing that is/was holding Tommie Harris in Chicago was Lovie Smith who courted him before he was drafted and has stuck by him through all of the BS that came with him over the past 4 years.

And the Pats are way too good to fall for that. Maybe Lovie can put them in a trance with one of his speeches or something and Marinelli can wave on of those spiral thingies around to hypnotize them, but until then probably never happen.

Penalties...

Turn on the radio or turn on the four letter channel and all they are repeating is that the Cowboys lost the game themselves (oh wait, that was the headline last week). I correct myself, the Packers lost the game themselves. But what they are forgetting is that despite the fact that Rodgers is an amazing quarterback (which I have heard so much from them that I would almost rather hear something new about Lebron), the Packers as a team did not work together.

When the O-line is getting beat, what do you do to protect your QB………hold.
When the corners/safeties are getting beat, what do you do……..interfere.
When you only care about putting as much pain on Cutler as possible, what do you do……..helmet to helmet.
When you try to get that first step to block Peppers, what do you do……..false start.
When the corners/safeties are getting beat again, what do you do…..again…..interfere.

As a team, the Packers play was terrible, and that is why the did these ILLEGAL plays, hence all the penalties. Its not as if the penalties appeared on their own. The Packers commited the illegal moves in order to stay in the game. That is what everyone forgets. These weren’t careless mistakes, these were corners saying “Shoot, Hester’s got a couple steps on me and will get this ball if I don’t grab him. Hopefully, the refs wont see.”

I cannot count how many holding penalties were not called on the line. Peppers had them beat all day long but wasn’t getting any calls. It was like the refs didn’t want to call those penalties because they didn’t want to make it look like the game was once sided.

The Bears played a fairly smart game. It was as if they noticed that the Packers had to cheat and told themselves to play as clean a game as they could and maybe the would be served justice.

The Bears played clean, the Packers didn’t and karma kicked in. You take away the dirty game the Packers played and the Bears still would have won.

by I Have Bearsititis on Sep 28, 2010 10:56 AM CDT reply actions

I didn't miss that the Pack needed the penalties to avoid giving up more than they did.

You have to realize all the media picked against us so of course they don’t give the Bears any credit for causing the penalties. That would mean they were wrong to them. Won’t happen. 18 penalties is far too easy to blame instead.

My quick analysis

How could the Packers beat themselves when they blatantly committed penalties that the Bears forced them to commit? Besides the hit to Jay’s head, they were all good or great individual plays made by the men in navy and orange. I believe Pepp caused 4-5 flags himself…so much for stats! Thanks to the refs for not letting the Packers get away with obvious holding, interference, and roughing calls.

Hester- your private plane is ready, and you’re still rediculous (should’ve had two return TDs). A

Peppers- you’re worth every penny, no matter how many sacks you record this year. A+

Cutler- a little erratic, but expected versus one of the best pass defenses in the league. Gets a B- soley on his toughness, and making a few big plays. See Olsen and Knox completions. B-

Urlacher/Briggs- all over the field making tackles again, and came up with the winning turnover by pursuing to the ball. A-

Omiyale- didn’t hear his name much, which is a good thing for a LT. B

Shaffer- solid job holding down RT; I saw a pancake block or two from him. B-

Forte/Taylor- decent job running and catching the ball, but Martz refused to establish a consistant running game (imagine that!). C-

Peanut/Bowman- both were terrible tackling the ball-carrier, and almost as worse in coverage. I thought our CBs strength is sure tackling? Stop trying the strip the ball every play roasted nut, and prevent the extra 5-7 yards! D-

Coaching- I wasn’t upset with him kicking the long FG on the first drive, but again, I’d rather tie the game with the FG at the goaline. It turns out he was redeemed in a big way by the Windy city Flyer. Martz and Tice had their line mostly prepared, especially in the second half. Not enough screens, quick passes, and draws. B-

Tommie Harris- your seat has been taken, and you may never get it back.

Aroma- don’t fret, you’ll see some PT the rest of the year. Just continue to work hard in practice, and learn the slot position better.

—A sloppy win is still a win. Steve Young and other non-believers can just continue to doubt this team, cause that’s the way they/we like it. Go Bears!

Thoughts

The thing people overlook on Cutler’s INTs, to me at least, are that on 2 of the ones that didn’t count he took big hits that didn’t allow him to get enough on the ball. Luckily, those 2 were called off because of penalties. Even if there hadn’t been pass interference of the last one to Bennett, it would have been a lot closer I think than just the guy jumping in and tackling Bennett.

I thought the running game got off to a good start, at one point there was a graphic put up that said we were averaging 5.0 yds/carry. Then we got away from it a little bit (and to some degree rightfully so since were were down 10-0) but then when we came back to it, it was gone. We need to get the ground game going.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

"We feel very good about this football team. We felt very good about our football teams in the past and it's no different. You've got to go out there and you've got to do it."

Cutler running for the 15-yd first padded that stat at the time.

I put it up there already but Cutler was the game’s leading rusher, at 3 carries for 37 yards.

The rest of the Bears’ backs? 14 for 40, for a 2.86 YPC.
