Game Ball of the Week: Julius Peppers

CHICAGO - SEPTEMBER 27: Julius Peppers is a grown man, and earned this week's WCG Game Ball. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

In awarding this week's Game Ball, a few different guys came up for consideration, including Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.  Both linebackers were completely dominant (for the third game in a row), and were making plays all over the field.

But, while statistically he might not have had a great game, Julius Peppers single-handedly disrupted the Packers offense, and created penalty after penalty due to his ferociousness.  He was a god among men last week, and is certainly deserving of the Game Ball.

Urlacher

It doesn’t get any better than Urlacher’s disruption of the Packer’s offense—he was everywhere and if it weren’t for his cleaning up missed tackles, we would have lost. It honestly looked like he was in camera view 75% of the plays.

+1

not just this week but every week he has been flying around delivereing major blows ask Jason Witten……nvm he might not remember it.

Week 1 Sack
Week 2 Fumble recovery
Week 3 HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE fumble forced

I would have to give it #54 without him that drive continues and who knows what happens

I love me some #54, and Brian definitely makes a difference. But tacking was poor from both our star LBs. Additionally, Brian was late in coverage in front of Greg Jennings, allowing room for the Rodgers to Jennings TD toss. None of this says he had a bad game. I still think he had a decent game, and his hustle and forcing of the fumble that Tim Jennings recovered was instrumental in the win. But I wouldn’t give him consideration for the game ball.

Not to mention

old Brian probably would’ve put Rodgers out of bounds before the rushing TD.

If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

Ill give you that

but not even considering him? I dont agree with that at all. He was definitely in the conversation its hard not to go with peppers but #54 made a the play of the game which allowed us to even have a shot at that game winning drive.

Peppers played amazing, Urlacher definitely earned his check as well.

but #54 made a the play of the game which allowed us to even have a shot at that game winning drive.

ok, but to be fair, he also missed on both of the plays that allowed Rodgers and Co. to score TDs. He blew coverage on Jennings, then he let Rodgers outrun him to the corner when he looked (I haven’t watched the game again yet, but I’m going off of what I saw the first time I watched the game) to be in “QB spy” on the play. It’s possible he was in a short zone across the center, but being that he wasn’t covering anyone, he still should have broken zone to keep Rodgers from having a completely open lane into the end zone. Now, I’m not saying he played a bad game, but I’m also not willing to give him consideration for player of the game when he clearly was not the most important factor or the biggest impactor, nor when he was directly involved in both of the Packers TDs.

I love Brian, and sport 1 of the 5 Urlacher Bears Jerseys or 2 Urlacher New Mexico #44s I own every Sunday. But I’m not just goin to plop him into the game ball conversation when he clearly made some serious mistakes. He had an off game (for 54, anyone else would call it a decent, if not great game.) and I’ll probably call his number in half the games this year for a game ball, but not this one.

And I’d say Devin’s return was the play of the game, though the forced fumble was top 3 plays.

Well

The td to Jennings was on urlacher it’s obvious
But for the Rodgers td he was in a rock and a hard place had he began to chase Rodgers as soon as he fled the pocket that would have left his zone open and we may be talking about how urlacher should have stayed in his zone on a rodgers pass td.
Urlacher did cover alot of ground as soon as he began to chase Rodgers. I beleve Pisa was in was closer to Rodgers not sure but I knew he was there at the end to try and knock Rodgers out

It’s fun to back and forth after a win though isn’t it?

Not including my usual choices (IZZY and Wolfe)

I agree Pep was number 1, and that The Lach and Briggs were beasting once more, but someone who deserves some pops is Knox. He quietly had a nice game and made some key catches.

Tim Jennings....

He came in and his tackling seemed to lead the rest of the team into better tackling. Maybe some of the linemen and linebackers were thinking “I’m not letting a Corner show me up tackling” or something to the like, but tackling seemed to improve once Jennings replaced Bowman. I thought Jennings played a fine game, and earned consideration.

I agree

he did a LOT better than many of us expected. Am I saying he’s game ball worthy? Maybe not quite yet. But if he keeps up to par like he was Mon. night, then he could easily be one of the top contenders!

Peppers is the real deal...

and he is such a singular force, it’s astounding! Give an honorable mention to Tim Jennings, Daniel Manning and Devin Hester. Outstanding effort across the board. If the Bears can be half that motivated the rest of the season, they will go far! I was worried about this defense, but they have played like men among boys these last 3 games. Now about that Harris guy…

peppers

I agree with Dane’s assessment that Peppers should have the game ball for all the reasons he stated, with emphasis on the fact that he didn’t have a statistically noteworthy game. That tidbit is where a lot of football big-brains go awry. They look for the stats and fail to see how the flow of the game is changed by a dominant player like Peppers. Having said that, I also think that Urlacher deserves a mention in the same breath. Yeah, I’ve heard the static about him being late in coverage and how the old Brian would have put Rodgers out of bounds, blah blah blah. He clearly brings something to the table you can’t measure, and to be blunt I say the Bears wouldn’t be 3 and 0 without him in the middle. He brings intangibles such as leadership, intelligence, a feel for the game, along with the stats-worthy stuff. In fact, I say it should be a Co Award this game ball – both Peppers and Urlacher, because they really demonstrated what team work is required to win a game, and you could throw Briggs in there too. I don’;t think you can point to one person yet, as there is not one clear winner of a game ball – yet. Yet, if I had to pick, I’d say Pep. Go Bears!

Shaffer was a bum last year,

but Tice seems to be molding Shaffer into a decent swing tackle this year. More power to him.

According to FO, he wasn't a bum.

Take it with a grain a salt, but he was the Bears second highest rated linemen, just behind Kreutz.
