Toub happy Hester ended TD drought - Preaching to the choir, sir.

10 thoughts: QBs add zest to Bears-Packers rivalry - Biggs takes a look at ten things. Well, really, more like 12ish things, since the last one has multiple parts.

Lovie sends message by benching Tommie Harris - Our acquaintance Sean Jensen looks at the repercussions of Harris' sit-down last week.

Last year's Bears wouldn't have beaten Pack - Mr. Mullin points out that this team is an awful lot better than last year...

Follow WCG on Twitter. We'll tweet things at you, and at other people, and then everyone will be tweetified and then we can tweet about how all the tweets have caused a tweetsplosion in Tweetuania.

Star-divide

Asiata clears waivers, joins Bears' practice squad - YES. I wanted that to happen sooooooo bad.

No need to tamper with winning formula - Mully takes a look at why the Bears should keep on, keep, keep truckin'.

Must reduce risk of playing football for sake of children - Telander looks into why we need to make this sport safe if we want to have people to play it in the future.

*Side Note: I was going to include some ESPN links, but ESPNChicago's giant autoplay sportscenter made my browser throw up twice, so now I'm not going to do it out of principle. If you would like to hear all of the reasons the Bears won Packers lost the game, please visit them at ESPN.com.

I find all of the articles and interviews about Lovie "holding people accountable" kind of a joke...

it’s taken him only 7 years to figure that out? I’ll be more impressed when he holds himself accountable for stupid decisions like not kicking FG’s from the one yard line when you can take the lead or tie the game in a tight contest and not come off like an arrogant, pompous, “I know everything, you know nothing”, jerk. Also, as soon as he can actually challenge a play that has a chance of being overturned, let us know. Even the one where the Packer RB obviously hit the ground and we won the challenge, if it wasn’t for the fact that Briggs got nicked up and a timeout had to be called, it looked like Rodgers was going to get the next play off before Lovie even knew what happened. This guy is clueless and that’s not going to change whether our record is 16-0 or 3-13. Without a really strong team, he has no chance of outcoaching anyone in the playoffs, should we get there…..unless, of course, someone gets hit by a bus and the team we face brings in Wanny as their HC at the last minute. Even I might give Lovie the edge in that matchup.

On the flip side

the Bears ended up getting that TD when Hester made his latest dash to the EZ. That doesn’t happen without great field position. He wants to win, so I have no problem with him going for it. It was well designed; too bad Dez couldn’t come up with it after Jay threw him a fastball.

Kicking field goals

The detroit field goal I still quibble with, because there’s not much time and you need to give yourself a chance to win there with that play.

But in general — I like him going for it on 4th down. Challenge your offense, challenge your defense. I don’t know if you know this, but in the NFL the defensive team is more likely to score next than the team on offense when they’re at their own 1.

by dbt on Sep 29, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should never try for it on 4th down but

not when, as in these two cases, you’re in a very tight ball game and the FG either ties the score or puts you ahead. We weren’t playing well enough (or poorly enough, for that matter) to not take those points.

Regarding the field position, as per Propheteer’s comments above, you can’t tell me that anyone knew that for the first time in almost 3 seasons Hester was finally going to bring one back!!!! The way Rodgers was playing the more likely scenario would have been that the Packers would have brought it out to the 20 anyway. You can’t go back and say it was a good decision because it turned out in our favor. That’s like getting completely drunk out of your mind and deciding to drive home yourself rather than taking a cab and then justifying that, because you made it home without killing yourself or anyone else, it was the right decision….bad decisions are bad decisions and I didn’t hear one credible source (coaches, ex-players, front office people, etc.) agree with Lovie on either of those situations.

The Telander article was good,

but I thought he would get into some things that could be done.

On the youth level there is a growing voice calling for the banning of the 3 point stance, to help stop with so many collisions.

Blame it on the helmets...

The more the helmets turn players at all levels into human missiles the more problems you’re going to see.

When guys were wearing leather helmets or even the less protective helmets so the tackler actually felt relatively vulnerable you saw a lot less helmet to helmet or helmet to body collisions :P

I’d go with that. You don’t get the same kinds of hits in rugby – the scrumcaps that some players wear are essentially a thin layer of foam.

Well, yes, otherwise you’d be taping your head vertically, which would look silly :-D The point of using electrical tape is that it sticks to itself but only moderately to your hair so it doesn’t pull it out – perhaps you were using something stronger?

The nature of the game dictates that collisions and some injuries will happen.

I coached youth football for many years and the thing that needs to be more closely monitored is the coaching ability of the people out there. There are probably 10 really good teachers and coaches to every really bad one but it’s those bad ones that get kids hurt with poor technique, worrying more about the score than teaching the game, and living vicariously through the kids. If more time was spent on teaching the coaches and making ALL of them qualify through a certification program, certain injuries would be minimized.

I remember reading a few years ago that there are more serious injuries incured in kids soccer games than in youth football. Sports and physical play of any kind opens people up to injury, that’s just a fact.

Keep an eye on how Bowman responds. He was the hot player last season
for Smith and his staff and that is why he was switched to left
cornerback in the offseason. Run support is a big key for the left
cornerback. Can Jennings hold up there at 5-8, 185 pounds?

Considering he’s probably the only sure tackler out there?

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

by awfullyquiet on Sep 29, 2010 9:23 AM CDT reply actions

The only reason

Jennings is a hero right now is because he recovered a fumble…after MISSING a tackle.

Just like the reveling in the Hester return, we could have qb sneaked for a TD anyways…i’m just saying, it’s great he ran one back, but either way we should have had 7.

Everyone who gets into a car takes the risk of suffering traumatic injury or death.

We all weigh the risk/benefit in what we choose to do. Those in professional sports are at least well compensated for the risks they take. I’m sure miners, steelworkers, arctic fishermen, etc. would be pleased to earn similar wages for undertaking jobs that are much more hazardous, with fewer safeguards.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

I was waiting for these guys to surface again.

So, Briggs fakes an injury so that Lovie will have time to see the replay before burning challenge flag, and this is bad coaching? They have done this several times under Lovie, sometimes its the fans who are clueless or blinded by hate.

I have to admit that it’s flustrating, Lovie never answers reporters questions honesty, we never know what he is thinking and he never says anything bad about any player or the team in general.

I'm worrying a little.

But that’s the urge to panic. For the first few weeks, Sidney Rice was gone, Percy was hurt AND playing out of position, that left Shank and Lewis as familiar targets for Favre (Berrian was hobbled with a hammy most of last year), who was plain rusty due to not practicing.

I feel we’ll pick up strength as we go on and should be firing on most cylinders by week six. Week eight will let us know whether or not Rice will be in for the year. By the time we get to Soldier Field, we should be giving you our best shot.

Unless we’re injured. fingers crossed

2 bottle Jack as well

I think it will be an oustanding game…even better when we win 560-3, never too early to predict

2 bottles of scotch actually but I like how you think.

I’m good with the early prediction as well, didn’t think it’d be as much of the nail biter you are predicting.

I feel I should chime in here.

When I got my first game of Madden, the team I would play as was the 85 Bears. I’d run the option, run back 15 yards in the snow, and then run up the other side of the field for a touchdown.

I don’t actually believe that statement, but I feel it’s the one most likely to hurt.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

RR

I’m gonna say that, and if nothing else, it’s a trap game for Chicago.

Giants will no doubt be watching the could have been INTs from Cutler and all their own costly penalties… I’m not saying Bears lose, but I don’t believe it’ll be a blowout

No the Giants can't lose a game

they can only be beaten. I loved that safety that got called on the Bradshaw penalty.

I don't agree with this garbage
- Cutler got lucky monday should have been picked at least 5 times

Yeah, so should a lot of QBs. Three were the result of blatant PI calls, and another one on Zombo or whatever his name is for almost destroying Jay’s chin. The only other play that should’ve been picked was the one where a Packers defender dropped a catchable ball. Peanut dropped a sure Int as well. Woulda, coulda, shoulda….

I always

like hearing hubs slant cause if you listen close enough you can tell he still has not gotten over being fired by the Bears (or for the Bears firing his friend juaron)…..some of the stuff he will say is true but then he will go over the top when it comes to the Bears…..

It was very boring. Followed by a short period of terrifying….

DJ was fired cause he sucked as a coach

Agree

but just last week Hub called Juaron one of the great NFL head coaches but not having the “personality” to show it to the media…..What ever that means….

Uh

how is blocking a FG, a PR and flags luck…it’s playing the game, when you can’t beat a team, you usually commit penalties, you game plan to have players like Izzy/Pep block kicks..and Hester. well we’ve been waiting for this for 3 years, he was due

shut your piehole hub!

Bears got luck on MNF w/ Peppers block FG, Hester PR, and all the flags

Luck has nothing to do with blocking a FG… The Bears overloaded a gap.

The Hester TD was luck? Didn’t the 10 other players on the return unit have to do their jobs?

And penalties by scared $h!tless offensive linemen are lucky? Penalties by an undisciplined team are luck?

Hub is approaching Mark Schlereth territory.

Hub's just trying...

… to color his analysis to be consistent with his season prediction.

But geez, that’s about as off base as he’s been all year.

So the Raiders must feel really unlucky for all these years!

They were the most penalized team for like a decade. If I recall correctly, they were never a very good team. Thus, penalties are part of the game, and usually correlate to a team not being very good.

Take last season

gb lead the NFL in penalties last season so pretty clear that they have not cleaned that up….Well at least Monday night…I have noticed watching their games though seems like they have taken the approach of taking the flag and taking their chances rather than letting the play happen….

It was very boring. Followed by a short period of terrifying….

Just hopped over to the big blue blog

they list 5 reasons the Giants should feel good about playing the Bears

1. The Bears are just lucky should be 1-2 at best
2. Jay Cutler is Jay Cutler
3. Giants D
4. Eli Manning
5. No way they can repeat the # of mistakes they made vs the Titans

1. even if the Bears were 1-2 there is no reason to think they couldn’t beat NY
2. Jay Cutler QB rating is 109.7
3. Giants D is ranked #10 but we already beat GB ranked #2 and Dallas rankd #5
4 Eli Manning QB rating is 81.7 maybe he is the new Jay Cutler
5. it doesn’t take that many mistakes to lose

Can’t blame them for rooting for their team, but it sounds like they are grasping at straws.

Especially the first 5 reasons

Conjecture rarely helps without the aid of actual, concrete facts. I’m not afraid of the overrated Giants D after going up against the Packers and Cowboys Ds.

we also dominate the run game

the only area of their game that has ANY promise…and the Jay Cutler thing is getting really old, he’s top 5 qb already, where’s little Eli…oh right, he sucks

where’s little Eli

In Peyton’s shadow and boy is it a big one. Imagine that for the rest of his life he will never be as good as his brother even though they’ve both won a superbowl. Bet Dan Marino is jealous.

giants game

I think it’s important to have a fast start and take their crowd out of the game..score on the opening possesion or have the D take the field 1st and set the tone…rattle Manning from the get-go. Should be a great game Sun. 4-0!!! Go Bears!!!!

by walterfan34 on Sep 29, 2010 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

I agree.

If you shut the crowd up, you really amp up the Bears chances to call plays.

If Peppers can get to Eli once or twice, he’ll be fidgetty and scared the whole night, just like he was in Indy. There is a lot of speculation that the team has quit on Coughlin, and they just aren’t playing with any real passion right now. It’s an excellent chance for the Bears to capitalize.

However, the Bears have to approach every week like they’re facing an undefeated team. The Bears have always been capable of playing DOWN to another team’s level. The Giants won’t simply roll over and play dead. We can’t give them the option to turn the season around.

Two things
Our acquaintance Sean Jensen

I like the sound of that.
The second is the fact that Wolfe made the block that helped sprung the Hester return. Special Teams is important and Wolfe contributes a lot to that aspect of the game.
