He lost out to Iwuh...
and joins a growing list of ST standouts that found homes on other teams. I don’t think he will be unemployed for long.

yep
I was surprised, but this means they only carry 6 LBs

Noooo...
… He lost to Jauquin Iglesias.
This is what I was harping about over the past two weeks. Someone with TALENT would lose out because of a player with POTENTIAL.

Just my opinion.
There is no link, hence why I followed it with my reasoning.

Crap
Somehow this pisses me off, I liked shaw. Must say that Iwuh is looking pretty good out there, but I didn’t think they would cut Shaw.
This means they're keeping an extra DB.

Or even Wolfe.
I read somewhere the Toub gets 1 pick. If his standout Shaw got cut, maybe Toub backs Wolfe to stay. Don’t know.
by Mike Mueller on Sep 3, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions
Surely Shaw would have had more value on STs than Wolfe? If Wolfe isn’t sticking as the 3rd running back, I don’t see that they would keep him for special teams and cut Tim Shaw.

I agree with that.
But does Dave Toub? We’ll find out soon enough.
by Mike Mueller on Sep 3, 2010 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions
why?
Wolfe was leadin the team in ST tackle before he was injured, and led the year before. Shaw is known solely for ST tackles, so why would he be kept over a guy who has led the team the last two seasons when he wasn’t injured?

We have other people who can return kicks. Shaw is (was) a playmaker on special teams last year. I don’t have any agenda against Wolfe but, while Shaw is admittedly strictly a ST coverage specialist, Wolfe seems to me to be much more of a luxury to keep on the roster unless he beats out Bell and serves as both 3rd RB and STer… but, as I said above, if he’s not filling both roles and is kept on purely for his ST contributions, I would have gone with Shaw (reportedly lackluster preseason form notwithstanding).

So....
Shaw makes ST tackles, which makes him a keeper, but…..
Wolfe actually led the team in ST Tackles in ’08, and was leading the team in ST Tackles in ’09 before the injury….plus he contributes more in other areas, and he was a luxury?
This is the train of thought I don’t understand. Can somebody please explain how this works? Cause to me, it looks like style over substance…….

Not the question I asked......
So I’ll repeat it. How is Shaw leading in ST tackles once better than Wolfe Leading in ST tackles twice? Why should we have kept Shaw for leading in ST tackles, but let go of Wolfe if he isn’t doing more than leading in ST tackles? Clearer now?

Here...
I’ll repeat the whole thing for you:
but, as I said above, if he’s not filling both roles and is kept on purely for his ST contributions, I would have gone with Shaw (reportedly lackluster preseason form notwithstanding).
This is EXACTLY why I asked the question. Why must Wolfe contribute on more than just ST to be good enough to keep in your eyes (even though he HAS produced when called upon) while you deem Shaw, with his truly awful play outside ST, worthy of staying when he contributes less on ST and doesn’t contribute (and I wouldn’t want him to, ouch was he bad) to anything else.
Repeating the double-standard over and over won’t answer the question that it spawns.

Objection withdrawn, yay for Wolfe, goodbye Shaw. Wouldn’t have been sorry to have seen him go either (not sure about Bell’s ability as a backup runner).

I would have no problem saying goodbye to Wolfe if he was replaced....
either by someone who was a better STer than himself, or by someone who was a better backup RB and still contributed well on ST. (For example, TJ’s little bother would work.

After injecting some caffeine and sugar into my neurones and trying to work out what the hell I was talking about, I may have been overly swayed by the report that Shaw earned a record-breaking score on Toub’s special teams evaluation system last year – but with the problems that the punting unit faced this preseason (and I believe Wolfe is Maynard’s personal protector), and Iwuh’s presence, plus the need to keep extra safeties and QBs, I suppose he would have been one luxury keep too many. Really not sure about having both Wolfe and Bell on the roster, but I suspect you may have something to say about that in your upcoming post.

Which goes back to my point.
… Someone who you KNEW could contribute in 2010, would be cut for someone that the coaching “hopes” will figure it out and contribute in 2010 (Wolfe) or 2011 (Iglesias). It also could come down to saving Angelo’s busted draft picks.
I knew this would happen.

How can you "know" something that hasn't happened?
Iwuh and Shaw are essentially equals. The Team doesn’t need both. I would guess that it was a tough decision.

Shaw recorded 30 P/T tackles in 2009.

My point is not that it was Iwuh vs Shaw
It was Shaw/Iwuh vs. an extra player on the offensive side.
You can mark that as the extra TE, the unproductive Igelsias, or the unknown variable named Garrett Wolfe.
… These players are what caused the team to have to make the tough decision that is in excess (as you suggest) for a player that has “might” show promise in the future.

You mean Iwuh
who led the Jags in ST tackles.
I like Shaw. He did a great job. In a crappy season he was a shining star. We elevated him to Icon status. We loved him. We worshiped him (not in a Greg Olsen way, though). He is a “better” player at his position than some guys who will make the final 53. He was also expendable.
Iglesias has proven nothing and he may very well be cut.
"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith
Thanks for the correction.
(More passion, than patience in that reply)
I agree that he was expendable, but I also think that he was “hosed” a bit by politics of preferential treatment.
I make no bones about it— I think Iglesias, Wolfe, and the extra TE will make this 53-man roster a tough one. Not because they have proven anything, but because they were “Jerry’s Kids”.

You shouldn't be surprised by the moves
you know weather we like it or not some players will stay with the team longer based on draft status. How many people here are ready and willing to publicly admit their mistakes? I’d guess not many.

I don't think Wolfe makes it
He’s looked like crap in the preseason, and has no place on this team. I’d be very surprised to see his bubble not burst.

I too think that Wolfe’s “goose is cooked”, but I wouldn’ be shocked to see him still in Chicago.

Iglesias is out........
Shaw was contributor, sure enough. So was Wolfe. Led the team in ST tackles in ’08, and was leading the team in ST tackles in ’09 before the injury.
I’ve made this point on other threads. Why do the same people who say Wolfe should be gone, even though he contributes on all 4 phases of ST, and provides some limited contributions to the offense then throw a hissy fit when the Bears cut a 2 phase ST player who also led the team (once) in ST tackles, and looked like garbage on the defense in the pre-season.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Shaw, and before the pre-season was sure that Iwuh was going to end up being cut before Shaw. But Iwuh outplayed Shaw. Period.

Precisely
Iwuh is better as a backup for Briggs, and can hold down Shaw’s position as a ST ace. Shaw looked lost out there with the defense; we all saw him trying to run down RBs and WRs ten yards down the field.
"In order to have a winner, the team must have a feeling of unity; every player must put the team first- ahead of personal glory" - motivational sign at Halas Hall.
Awesome
Shaw was the only thing that made some games watchable last year. Stupid safeties and their injuries. NOT HAPPY.
Colt's fan friend - "This is our dog, we named her after Peyton Manning."
Boondocksaints812 - "You named her Bitch?!? Did you train her to lie down when you run towards her too?"
By cutting him this soon, the Bears are actually giving him more time to find a new team.
Silver lining for him I guess?

Ironically, Brian Iwuh, who was part of the reason why Shaw didn’t last in Jacksonville, may have factored into Shaw being let go in Chicago.
Iwuh better watch his shoes, shampoo and jock. He might get some of that icy-hot Chris Harris was talking about, Shaw might be getting a little pissed already.
I seriously doubt it was Iwuh.
Jeff Dickerson was VERY high on Iwuh throughout camp, but said that injury led to him only being able to showcase his wares to a limited degree.
It really boils down to a lot of talent in the LB units and a lot of “potential” and draft picks kept in others. Look at the offensive side and see where there will be an “addition” that was kept because of either reasons.

cuts
Really disappointed to hear Shaw & Malast both cut. I honestly thought Malast played well enough to make the team. Also am not surprised Afalava was cut either. Hopefully we can get some of the young guys on the PS, Malast & Turenne in particular.
