The smartest thing to come out of the decision to bench Tommie

Was to do it early in the season rather than to let it be an issue later on down, when they could be fighting for a spot in the playoffs. To be honest, D.A. Is the more suprising of the two. He was made some errors in the detroit game, but week 1?

Keep in mind, though.

His issues came right as Bennett was coming back, as well. They wanted to work Bennett into the gameplan anyways, and the receiver who had simultaneously the best/worst game was DA

DA does not

Oh boy. I sure can't get enough about the special teams edge.

Seriously, though. I thought he’d be more of a factor this season. Deactivating him was unexpected.

And Downfield Blocking

Earl blocks his but off. With guys like Knox and Hester, often one good block can spring them after a catch. I think several of DA’s drops were understandable in game 1 — he got clobbered just as the ball arrived. I think what got him in trouble as much as anything was he would stand there after a teammate made a reception. Got to run to the action and knock someone.

by Shuffle85 on Sep 30, 2010 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Bennett is a good blocker.

DA is just miscast as a slot guy. I’ve said it before, DA should get about half the reps at X, allowing Knox some time at the slot.

bingo.

DA, Knox and Hester on the field are still probably the 3 best receivers we have.

‘We put the best 45 on the field’. Mmmhmm.

Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

by awfullyquiet on Sep 30, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

+1...

DA can get separation in bump-and-run coverage and tends to catch best over the top of the defense or behind it. He’s not a slot guy who runs drags, hooks and crosses and looks for YAC. He’s a tall burner, and a damn good red zone threat. IMO, he needs to be the short yardage WR or the home run ball compliment to Knox/Hester. Bennett is a better across the middle/slot WR. T Harris has a long history of underperforming, DA does not. I do not get the DA benching.

You Are Correct

That seems like a logical rotation.

by Shuffle85 on Sep 30, 2010 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

On getting clobbered...

If anyone could shed some light on the issue, because this is largely my own speculation. It seems that DA had a comment or two about Cutler’s passes getting him clobbered. The next two weeks he was benched. Cutler said he was banged up and Martz said that he didn’t understand the slot. I was thinking maybe he got sat down because to understand the slot, you need to know that you’re going to get hit often and sometimes really hard. IMO, Martz and Cutler may have been offended by his complaints. Thus Cutler might say he’s too banged to play (because he complained about getting hit), and Martz might say he doesn’t understand the slot (because you will get hit there). Potentially, they are making the point to him that other guys are willing to get hit and if he’s not he can hold a clip board. Again, this is just a thought. Please let me know if anyone else got this sort of feeling from the comments over the past two weeks.

agree with Scully, disagree with L.A.W jr.

I got the same vibes from JC and Martz. I only disagree with Les because I think the situation on the field should determine where these guys line up. I like DA on the outside in the red zone but Martz wants to be able to move his receivers around and keep the D off balance. If DA won’t play slot aggressively they have no choice but to sit him down and go with the guys that will do what needs to be done.

guys seem to indicate that DA had went to Martz about playing the slot and not liking it so now he is being benched or not played….So take that for what it is worth…

I want to see the Bears either get Henry Melton goal line carries

Or add a big bruising RB from somebody’s practice squad. Anyone get to see what LeGarrette Blount did for the Bucs on the goal line last week vs the Steelers? And he was claimed off waivers from the Titans.

We NEED a runner like that, because we cannot convert any short yardage situations. Look at John Kuhn from the Pack… Leron McLain from the Ravens… these guys don’t get stopped on short yardage. We need a guy, and Harvey Unga is on IR.

by SackMan on Sep 30, 2010 8:14 AM CDT reply actions

I'm not sure if it's our lack of a bruiser,

or just our OL being very, very poor in the trenches. While Martz and Tice can make in-game adjustments to counter the pass rush (screens, cuts, traps, pulls, misdirections, etc), when it comes to running inside the tackles, our OL gets pushed stright backwards.

There’s not a RB in the league that could run through our OL going backwards, PLUS the oncoming DL.

by Dane Noble on Sep 30, 2010 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions

For the last two years I've watched Forte get stopped over and over and over again.

He doesn’t have a nose for the goal line… runs upright, and can’t keep churning to move a pile.

Yes our Oline sucks… but the right runner can move the pile for a yard, or find that little crack and push through.

by SackMan on Sep 30, 2010 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

True about Forte,

he is definitely more of an open-field, shifty type RB. That’s what he was at Tulane too… that’s just his thing.

BUT, I wouldn’t necessarily write Chester Taylor off yet either. I agree that in a short yardage situation, a bruiser RB could move a pile forward a yard. But that is also in a situation where the OL is at least holding their own, not getting blown backwards. When both the OL and DL are a yard deep in the backfield by the time the RB is moving forward, it all goes out the window, no matter if it’s Chester, Melton, or the Fridge.

by Dane Noble on Sep 30, 2010 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Ditto from me

I’d give Melton a shot, cause Forte obviously doesn’t have the vision in short yardage either. Did you see the 4th down play against the Lions? Manu, I believe, was the lead and Forte had a crease to bounce it outside. Instead he ran right into the backs of his linemen. He would’ve walked into the EZ if he followed his lead.

I think the vision thing...

is Forte’s problem. He is shifty in open space, but he really just lacks the instinct for between the tackles running.

by Shuffle85 on Sep 30, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Henry Melton

I agree with SackMan get Melton in the game and Wolfe. Let Wolfe get behind Melton so thet can’t see him or are unsure of who’s going to carry the ball. Also Melton has been getting to the quarterback in his limited playing time, and he is aggresive.

by lama bear on Sep 30, 2010 8:21 AM CDT reply actions

Melton, yes.

Wolfe in the goal line? No way homie.

by Dane Noble on Sep 30, 2010 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

That's why Wolfe goes behind Melton.

Everyone assumes Melton has the ball, they all pile on him, in the confusion somehow Wolfe squirts through and dances in the endzone while eleven other guys are piling on eachother.

by Steven Schweickert on Sep 30, 2010 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

The only way Wolfe squirts through anything in short-yardage situations

is if he squeezes down one sprinkler head behind the line of scrimmage and pops back up through one in the end zone.

by Dane Noble on Sep 30, 2010 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

It's an imperfect plan, sure

Could always just piggyback Wolfe on Melton, that’s a combined 400 pounds of RB and I’m sure Melton could carry him.

Manu at fb/H-back?

Five Questions with WCG (over at BBC)

BBV: If you could take one player off the Giants roster and put him in your lineup, who would it be? Why?

WCG (Dane): Great question. I’d probably say Eli Manning, because it would be nice to have a solid #2 QB behind Jay Cutler.

On the goaline

does anyone else want to see Forte, Taylor, or whomever is the RB try to dive over the pile instead of trying to act like a battering ram? The line hasn’t got a push, but they’ve certainly held their ground enough for the back to get a running start.

I beleive there is a penalty relating to illegal leverage

It was called on the Fridge in 1985 or 1986 for trying to pick up Payton and carry him into the endzone. Dont know if the rule is still on the books but I remember Johnny Morris talking about how it it illegal to setup any kind of gadget play involving what your describing.
