The Inside Scoop: 15 Minutes With Bears Beat Writer Sean Jensen

Jensen_head_shot_small_mediumBefore the 2010 season, there were 100 questions about the Chicago Bears that no one knew the answers to.  One of the biggest had to have been about Mike Martz taking over the offense.  Well, three games into the year, I thiink we can check that one off the list.  The same could be said about whether Brian Urlacher could return to form, whether Matt Forte was the real deal, whether Devin Hester still had it in him as a returner... and many other questions.

But, we all know that there are still some relatively big questions that have not been answered yet - see: Tommie Harris, Devin Aromashodu, the offensive line, the pass rush, etc.

For many questions, we'll just have to wait and see how they play out.  Other questions though can be answered more immediately, and that's why Sean Jensen is coming back for another Q/A session with the best Bears fans on the internet.  He'll be here around 3pm CT, so you've got plenty of time to get your questions in.

In the meantime, don't forget to check out the S-T's blog Inside the Bears, as well as keeping up with all the latest from Jensen on his Twitter feed.

What has practice been like the last couple of days

in regards to Tommie Harris and Devin Aromashodu? Lovie Smith seemed to hint that Tommie would be back this week, but what about Aroma?

Tommie and DA

Today is the first real practice of the week. I would guess Harris back this Sunday, but I’m still not as confident about Devin A. Don’t think he helped himself with his comments yesterday to reporters.

I'm having a hard time believing that this team will continue to see success

unless we develop a running game. Is the lack of an established run game due to personnel, Martz’s offensive philosophy, not committing to the run, or other issues? Also, what do you think the Bears can/will do to address this?

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.

Running offense

It’s one of my biggest issues with this team. Be on the lookout: I’ve got some interesting things coming on that. But, they better be able to run the ball this Sunday; the Giants run defense is 26th in the NFL while the pass defense is fourth.

Forte has done a nice job as a receiver. But, he has looked real hesitant as a runner. The o-line, though, hasn’t helped him much.

i would also like to find out whats happening to the running game.dont get me wrong i am happy with the 3-0 but if we are in the lead and need to eat up the clock we would be stumped.

Offensive Line questions

The offensive line has been performing fairly well in the last couple of games since Williams got injured and Omiyale was moved to LT. At least, they have in pass protection. Omiyale seems at least as good at LT as he was at RT, and Schaffer looks right at home at RT where he wasn’t at LT. What are the scenarios that you see when Chris Williams comes back from injury regarding the starting lineup and the rotation? Which of them appear more likely than others?

Thank you, Mr. Jenson, for coming on and answering our questions!

by Doshi on Sep 30, 2010 12:06 PM CDT reply actions

Hey Doshi.......

Mark my words Chris Williams will be back starting at 2:12:56 PM and Frank Omiyale will be back at RT and Shaffer to the bench.

oops

I mean Left tackle for Williams.

by Dozjah on Sep 30, 2010 2:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Offensive line

Other than that one glaring mental mistake by Omiyale, I thought he and Shaffer played well. I think that allows the Bears to be more conservative with Chris Williams. Hamstrings take some time to heal. And, if you’re patient, it won’t be a problem. Rush it, though, and you could have an issue for the remainder of the season.

They’ll take their time with him.

SEAN, THIS IS CLEARLY MY QUESTION

Hey, you told me to make it clear. :)

The tackles for the Giants have looked like they’re struggling, in the action I’ve seen so far this season. Is there a matchup that you think Peppers will be more able to exploit than another? I personally am expecting it to be Diehl, for some reason.

Additionally, given that the Giants are going to have to double him most of the game (or just apply the Packers tried and true method of constant holding), will this finally be the week that the other 75% of the line really steps up their game.

I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.

Giants offensive tackles

Peppers is on a roll right now. Fact is, the Giants — after watching film of last Monday — will have two people to account for him. That could be an offensive tackle, and a running back trying to chip him.

Rodgers and Romo are both fairly mobile quarterbacks, so they were able to avoid several sacks. But Eli isn’t nearly as fleet-footed, and he’s also apt to take his fair share of sacks. He’s not as decisive as his brother, Peyton. Since 2008, Peyton has been sacked 27 times. In that same stretch, Eli has been sacked 64, including seven so far this year.

I’m still not sold on the Bears pass rush, but they did — IMO — do a solid job against the Packers.

Tommie Harris

I addressed that in my story in Wednesday’s paper (http://www.suntimes.com/sports/jensen/2755834,CST-SPT-sean29.article)

At this time, the Bears are not shopping him. He’s already guaranteed his entire base salary for the season ($1.2 million, if I recall), and they don’t really have — like most teams — a whole lot of depth at the position. Besides, what could they get for him?

As I pointed out in my story, they will have a big decision to make on June 1, when he’s due a $2.5 million roster bonus.

I would like to see the big receiver back on the field. I know they say he is uncomfortable in the slot but there has to be something more. 1 game is not enough evaluation of a player with the explosiveness he has. Thank you.

Do you believe Martz

will help Cutler relax and dump it off to his safety-valve versus the Giants more than he did versus the Pack? It sure seemed like he was throwing into double-coverage without giving his WR a chance at the ball. Thanks!

Cutler forcing the issue

Yes, I thought he did force the issue a few times in this last game, especially after making great decisions in Dallas. With Jay, it’s hard to know. He seems to have a little bit of Brett Favre in him, in that he seems to make a couple of questionable throws a game. The key for a defense is to make them pay for those misreads. The Packers obviously didn’t; I recall at least one drop by Nick Collins.

The Giants are clearly

a bad run-defense team, so do you believe Martz will dial up more running calls on Sunday night?

What’s your take on why Shaffer was benched during the Green Bay game?

I was totally surprised when I saw Webb in. I thought Kevin was doing pretty well. I don’t mind Webb getting some playing time, but not against a good defense like the Packers. Especially not against Clay Matthews.

He wasn’t benched. The Bears had planned to give seventh-rounder J’Marcus Webb a few snaps during the game. They like what he’s done, and they wanted to see him play in an actual game.

by TheMan1 on Sep 30, 2010 2:13 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

What player to pick up via trade?

Of the available players, I’d have to say McNeill. He’s a two-time Pro Bowl selection, who is 26 years old. He also happens to play one of the most important positions in football. And given how well Cutler has looked, it might not be bad to help him out. But, again, the cost could be prohibitive. Not only in terms of a contract (which would be huge) but also the draft pick/ picks.

Forte is a weapon. But, I haven’t been real impressed with him as a running back. He seems too indecisive and hesitant. Yet it’s hard to discount his rookie season. Let’s see what he can muster over the next few weeks.

The team has given him the rock a lot. But, if he doesn’t produce more, you better believe they will give the ball to their high-priced backup RB, Chester Taylor.

Making it stand out again…do DA and Bowman just not want to see the field or something? They seem to be unwilling to acknowledge that their poor play could have something to do with their not playing.

Publicly questioning your coaches generally speaking, is a poor idea, especially for those who aren’t exactly upper-echelon players. Should we watch for them to get a lot more chances, or do you think they’ve gone and dug themselves too-deep holes?

Today is the first real practice, so I’m not sure what the plan is, at this point. But, I’ve got to believe Bowman will be given every opportunity to resume his role. Jennings has a great attitude, and he doesn’t seem to mind his role. Bowman, meanwhile, came in thinking he was the starter and fixture as a starter. Now, his ego has taken a ding, so let’s see how he responds. I’m guessing it will be a good wake-up call.

Well, Toeaina earned Monday’s start, but he didn’t exactly shine. He wasn’t credited with a single tackle or play against the Packers. Melton, meanwhile, had one tackle, and Harrison had one quarterback pressure.

Pass rush-

The arrival of Rod Marinelli last year brought high hopes of an increased pass rush, something that had been missing for a couple of seasons.

2009 did not show that improvements that were expected, and we subsequently added Julius Peppers to the mix.

While Peppers has certainly contributed to our three wins so far this season, there have still been long stretches of time during each game this season that the pass rush is non-exsistent.

Image vs. Reality

We continue to see the “we’re still underdogs” in interviews with players, and coaches, but are they just exuding pure cockiness/confidence/Old Spice Swagger/whatever you want to call it during practice?

While some of the situations they were in lend themselves to luck more than skill, necessarily, this team is exactly where it was telling us it could be. An offense on the rise, a defense that seems to be back to its normal self, special teams are resestablishing themselves. Do they think they can take the world on right now?

Running Game

With regards to the running game, which we all agree is pitiful, why do you think we aren’t seeing more pitches, sweeps etc.

With a few wide receivers who seem like they might be willing to try blocking, and offensive linemen who look like they’d be better at pulling (as evidenced by the screen game), wouldn’t it make sense to try and get these running backs to the outside and in a little bit of space?

I mean, the Matt Forte “bounce off the right guard and get a two yard loss” is about as effective as Turner’s old standby “FB Dive”
