Chicago Bears 53 Man Roster - Cut List (And updated roster list)

Its over for 22 players.  At least as Chicago Bears and assuming they don't put any on the Practice Squad or go after them again later.  Head over to the official site for the full article.

The Bears on Saturday reached the NFL’s mandatory 53-man roster limit by waiving 21 players including offensive lineman Josh Beekman, safety Al Afalava, special teams standout Tim Shaw, defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert and wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias.

They also terminated the contract of tight end Richard Angulo, a vested veteran.

Other players waived were quarterback Dan LeFevour, fullback Eddie Williams, receivers Freddie Barnes and Greg Mathews, tackles James Marten and Levi Horn, center Tim Walter, defensive end Barry Turner, defensive tackles Edwin Williams and Mick Williams, linebackers Kevin Malast and Kelvin Smith, cornerbacks Cornelius Brown and Woodny Turenne and safeties Quentin Scott and Aaron Webster.

UPDATE: We've added the current roster after the jump.  There are subject to be a few changes, but this is the "final" roster that the Bears have reported to the league.

Star-divide

From the Trib:

QB (3): Jay Cutler, Todd Collins, Caleb Hanie

RB (4): Matt Forte, Chester Taylor, Kahlil Bell, Garrett Wolfe

WR (5): Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Rashied Davis, Earl Bennett

TE (4): Greg Olsen, Brandon Manumaleuna, Desmond Clark, Kellen Davis

OL (8): Chris Williams, Roberto Garza, Olin Kreutz, Lance Louis, Frank Omiyale, Kevin Shaffer, J'Marcus Webb, Johan Asiata

DL (9): Julius Peppers, Tommie Harris, Anthony Adams, Israel Idonije, Mark Anderson, Matt Toeaina, Henry Melton, Marcus Harrison, Corey Wootton

LB (6): Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Hunter Hillenmeyer, Nick Roach, Brian Iwuh

CB (6): Charles Tillman, Zack Bowman, Corey Graham, D.J, Moore, Tim Jennings, Josh Moore

S (5): Chris Harris, Danieal Manning, Major Wright, Craig Steltz, Josh Bullocks

SPEC (3): Robbie Gould, Pat Mannelly, Brad Maynard

I'm not saying he outplayed any of the others but...

I think we will regret cutting Iglesias loose at some point.

Maybe

But I don’t think so. You have to look at a guy like Knox Iglesias will never be better than him. He was drafted higher but has less talent.

On the plus side, Matt Jones was released today...

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

but i’ve seen others throw that name out and mean it as an upgrade, he’s tall……..anything else, i mean other than his skill at snorting coke? whatever we are stuck with who the bears have and now its time for them to show that they are in it to win this year and not just waiting for another draft……..sunday those guys need to show that this season isn’t gonna suck.

Yeah, Matt Jones has become sort of a mascot at WCG...

a mascot for what, I’m not sure. But, typically anytime a semi-big name is available from another team, or on the free agent market, we always have people who start with the “The Bears should go get _.”

So, Matt Jones is more of a metaphorical punchline than anything else.

Honestly, I haven't

seen anyone seriously state they wanted Jones considered. Jones will probably, finally and justly, be done in the NFL now.

Iglasias and Gilbert are eligible for the practice squad according to the Tribune

So if nobody picks them up on waivers, they may be back at Halas Hall soon. Doubt they want Iglasias, but maybe Gilbert.

If they put Hanie on the IR after the Detroit game, for how long is he out? At that point they can bring in a veteran at another position without paying a vested salary.

If Gilbert's only problem

was fitting onto a 4-3 line it could be attractive for a 3-4 team to try him at end.

They were awarded someone from the Cowboys that they’d placed a higher priority on. Gilbert is now a free agent, according to Biggs.

Yes, the PUP list means you're off the active roster for the first 6 games.

And when they do rutt-up a true prospect by mistake, … untill this year, … they didn’t have any Real Coaches that knew how to develope them.
Keep Tice and let him build us a O-Line.
Marinelli knowes the defense better than Lovie already and Martz will need another year with the offense.
Love is toast! He is not a Head Coach. OK! … A Position Coach, but not a Head Coach!
I don’t know if it’s because he can’t learn or won’t learn, but he has proven that the only thing he’s worst at than throwin the “Red Sock” is screwing up at chosing/cutting players and coaches.

Whats the point

of a running back that will NEVER start for an NFL team, and despite all his straight line speed (thus success as a S/T gunner) does not have the burst out of his cuts to be a true outside runner either (hence his inability to be a guy like Sproles). If he can never carry the ball consistently, what can he do? Make some ST tackles? I can get that in the 7th round. Wolfe is a bust, and because we won’t cut him, he is the bust that keeps on busting.

Why not Housh?!

We are undermanned at WR with 5 in a system that throws 5 out there occasionally and we have maybe, after the vikes, the smallest group of wideouts(Height wise) plus he’ll get his 7 million bucks regardless. We have some good receivers but nobody can argue that we do not have the toughest corps in the league. They get knocked out of their routes more than corps I saw last year. He would come in for the minimum and Seattle would have to pick up the rest of the 7. It’s not a pressing need but Bennett banged up and not playing anything during the last month and a half. It’s not a bank breaker and I’m not buying the whole cancer shit cause when cincy was circus he never said a peep but to back his teammates. Just saying… we don’t need necessarily need him but we could use him.

i agree/disagree

housh would be a good pick up, thats where i disagree, if anything he would be more of a decoy and with the talent we have at receiver i would wait to see a few games into the season before signing a demanding wideout. 23 and 15 give us the fastest starting receivers in the league and with 19 coming off the bench/slot receiver is deadly. he is already jay’s favorite target and lets not forget earl bennett when he is healthy has a nice flow with jay back to their college days… i just dont see housh fitting in

by Tommy Ohyeah Mcduffie on Sep 5, 2010 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree w/ this assessment

Basically, Borikua, we don’t need him and I doubt he’d sign for the minimum. Plus, remember last year when before he played the Bears he said he was going to make us “feel bad” or whatever for not signing him or even calling him when he was a free agent? Then he preceded to do nothing in the game against our mediocre secondary? No thanks I’ll pass. Plus, I tend to believe that receivers hands start to go once they get north of 32-33. I have no evidence to back me up on this other than my own thoughts and observations.

i definitely feel the confusion on beekmans end but i i also see the decision to cut shaw. Josh beekman could play center or guard which is why im confused its like losing two linemen in my eyes when we have a struggling o-line. Why not cut Marten since we kept webb and let beekman stay? Tim Shaw produces on special teams which is true but its been said for 3 days now Iwuh has beat him out on for a roster spot the last few years. It tells me one thing the coaches are noticing that Iwuh is a better all around player. Though i hate to see tim go theres no room for two special teams aces, now why Gman(garret wolfe) is still on the team WHO KNOWS?

As much as I like Caleb Hanie, I’d rather see him on IR and have another WR or O-lineman. The Beekman cut, while I don’t think he’s the greatest thing ever, could really hurt down the road if Kreutz or a Guard nicked up.

Wasted Draft Picks

It is readily apparent the Bears are poor judges of talent by the release of their top draft picks and then they keep a guy like Garrett Wolfe who is absolutely worthless and has not ever accomplished anything. The guys that need to be released are the guys running the organization. I will be surprise if the Bears win a game this season. They are putrid!

Thoughts on some Cuts.

The decision to keep Garrett Wolfe on this roster was an understandable one. It was evidence that they were trying to get rid of him by trying different players at his position on special teams and the less carries he got this preseason. When they saw that no one can play the personal punt protector position better than Wolfe, that was his ticket to a roster spot.

Iglesias should have never been drafted by the Bears for the fact that he’s the same player as Earl Bennett.

Beekman release was understandable since Johan Asiata has more upside and Garza can play Center in a pinch if Kreutz were to get injured. I just never understand the love for Beekman and was worried that he was the heir apparent to Kreutz.

The Gilbert pick is a clear example how incompetent their talent evaluation is. According to Biggs, the Bears never wanted Gilbert and instead wanted some DT from Purdue that Kansas City got before that pick. A 3-4 defensive end like Gilbert doesn’t fit in a tampa -2 where you value speed and athleticism at that position.

3 punts were blocked from failures in blocking from the punt protector

Wolfe has not allowed a single blocked punt and has still managed to lead the team in Special Team tackles. He was probably the one player chosen by Dave Toub and that says a lot about his abilities on special teams.

we kept K. Bell and Kellen Davis over Beekman!?

That was stupid: keep 2 guys who will never see the field (including on special teams) instead of a decent young player who is your #1 backup at 3 of the 5 O-Line positions (and was the heir apparent to Kreutz after this season).

Our 1st two picks from last year’s draft gone already — way to draft there Jerry!

Wonder if, as some have speculated, if Kreutz is done after this season, we’ll be looking at a replacement center who’ll never have played the position before. With the clowns who run the team, that wouldn’t surprise me.

counting on injuries

you must be counting on a rash of injuries if you think Bell and Davis are going to make any contribution whatsoever to this team (that goes for at least the next 2 years).

Why keep 4 TEs when you’re running a scheme that doesn’t emphasize the position!?

Why keep 4 RBs when you have a #2 RB who could start for 1/2 the teams in the league!?

Kreutz is done after this year (and should have been done 2 years ago). I guess we can look forward for a yet-to-be-named 6th round draft pick to anchor our O-line in the future.

Not saying Collins is Warner, but let’s be fair. Unemployed in the NFL before the season even starts doesn’t mean someone can’t play or isn’t any good. 2007 was his last meaningful playing time. There are no sure things in any round.

That is why you target and draft players you need. You don’t draft a QB in the 6th rd rd who, at best, would have been a 3rd QB(remember they said they liked Hanie and were going to keep him). You take a flyer on a player to develop for a team need. What we need was O-line depth. It was a wasted pick period.

I am saying that,

for whatever reason they want to use, a pick being released before the first regular season game(in the same year he was drafted) is a wasted pick. It’s amazing to me that you wiould still endorse that pick. It’s called managing risk. If you have a “franchise QB”, a young “promising” back-up, and terrible depth at certain(O-line) positions why would you waste a late rd pick on a QB? Common sense says that you load up on positions of need and see if one pans out. If they don’t, well, they are also wasted picks!

by Jhitt81 on Sep 5, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's where we differ...

I don’t think Martz thought much of Hanie when the draft came around. Neither did a lot on this sight, or a lot of the media. You’re calling it a position of strength, but before training camp everyone was saying the Bears were screwed if Cutler went down, and still were as recently as two weeks ago. I think the Bears did exactly what you described above. They saw a position where terrible depth was perceived and threw a pick at it that was roundly considered a good choice among writers and such. Then Hanie proved himself to Martz. Then he got hurt and the Bears were forced to bring in Collins. Collins turned out to be better than expected and circumstances left Lefevour the odd man out. As hard as I am on Angelo (I did just write a fanpost about the atrocities of the Angelo Drafts), I see this as bad luck and win now thinking rather than a bad pick. Had Hanie not been hurt, Lefevour would be on the roster.

Apparently the Bengals thought he was NFL worthy. Aren't they the same team that's.....

benefiting from the utterly stupid release of Tank Johnson and the ability to motivate Cedric Benson. I’d still say that Dan was a good pick. Sometimes circumstances change. I think the Bears thought he would be available for the practice squad, and misjudged what other teams saw in Lafevour in the Browns game. With Hanie injured, it forced the Bears to get Collins. Collins then shined in the Cleveland game and that changed Dan’s fate. Had Hanie not injured his shoulder Lefevour would still be a Bear, I think. It’s just the way the chips fell.

I’m certainly no Angelo apologist, but I don’t actually blame Angelo for dropping a 6th rounder on a guy like Lefevour. He’s a developmental pick and will make, at the least, a good backup in a couple years.

I think he would be a great fit over Hanie. Instead of using Hester in the absurd bears’ wildcat, we can use an actual NFL arm that can run if given a lane. Being that double threat is gonna catch teams off guard and it would be a whole lot of mismatches with Hester, Knox and Olsen on the field in the “bearcat”.
