Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

When the Bears fail to make the playoffs again in 2010, who gets the job?

Lovie Smith is a lame duck... running out of excuses and options. Ditto for Jerry Angelo.

The rap sheet:

1. No playoffs in 3 seasons.
2. Promoting and then demoting himself as defensive coordinator.
3. Cleaning out the entire coaching staff.
4. And finally going on a spending spree to fix a laundry list of bad drafts and personnel decisions, which will ultimately be the worst decision, as he and Angelo set back this franchise even further, by giving money to guys on the wrong side of 30.

I voted Lovie, simply because of the looming lockout.

BUT, it would make me so very happy to see Jeff Fischer on our sideline in 2012.

There’s much less misuse of “core” when they mean “corps” these days, that’s for sure.

Hopefully none of the above

I like Harbaugh above the rest but not ready to make him the Bears HC quite yet. He wants a position job or OC barring Martz failing, give it to him.

by TheMan1 on Sep 9, 2010 8:13 AM CDT reply actions

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!...

Martz is an offensive genius. He should stay as an OC! Having been in STL during his tenure there, I can attest to the fact that he’s a terrible HC. He’s a thinker and a planner, but he’s not an executive leader. He’s great as the OC and a new HC could easily work with him. If he turns this offense around, pay him like a HC if that’s necessary, but DO NOT LET HIM RUN A TEAM!

Can we see what he does before annointing him our savior?

A weak oline and seven step drop scheme has me a little worried. Just because we are coming off “The Douche” Turner hangover, let’s not get desperate.

I did say "if he turns the offense around"...

and I agree, I have a long way to go before I am sold on the offensive line as anything but mediocre.

I agree with some others that the CBA/Lockout will affect this situation, but assuming things get worked out...

I don’t want to see any of the current coaching staff remain with the organization. This atmosphere has to change and change completely. It’s not an indictment of some of the newer coaches (Tice, although I didn’t think he was great as a HC in Minn) but we need to make a clean break and bring in a HC then let him name his own staff. We’ll be starting from scratch and that’s okay but any remnants of the Lovie/Angelo era will just be negative reminders.

Regarding Martz, I wrote this in another post. I think we have all been so desparate to see something happen on the offensive side of the ball that we tend to overlook some things about this guy.

I’m glad to hear someone else isn’t exactly sold on Martz. One thing I just can’t shake is the fact that his entire reputation was built on a couple of seasons. If the Titans Kevin Dyson were a few inches taller in that Super Bowl, would anyone really be all that enamored with the "Greatest Show on Turf"? Yes, they put up a lot of points and yards, but so did the old "run and shoot" which was the hot offensive scheme several years ago but defenses stopped it, too many turnovers, etc.

Also, it bothers me that for several years now, there haven’t been many teams that have been falling over themselves to hire him. He got two chances with the worst organizations in the league in the 49’ers and Lions when they were at their low points and no other coaches seemed to be interested. I have never heard of any good teams in the last few years who were interested in Martz. Hell, even this off-season nobody pursued him, including us until our first couple of choices turned us down. Can the entire NFL be wrong?

I don’t want to hear it’s because of his "hard to get along with" reputation either, because we see "problem" players and coaches get hired in the NFL all the time if teams think they can actually win because of their talent.

I hope I’m wrong and we do well, but I’m not sold

by BearFan611 on Sep 9, 2010 9:18 AM CDT reply actions

Bottom line Martz > Turner

by BearNecessities on Sep 9, 2010 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say that yet...

if Cutler gets ruined from the 7 step drops and constant sacks and throws even more interceptions, which is possible in this scheme, then I’d argue that the opposite is true.

by BearFan611 on Sep 9, 2010 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Here's the deal!

When it comes to offense, guys like Martz can bring value to themselves. Martz doesn’t have a lot of friends in high places like other coaches, and when you don’t have such, you’re pretty much hung out to dry. Martz won in St. Louis, but his bad health and attitude was his downfall. If it wasn’t for the 2 turndowns (and Lovie) , he’ll still be out of a job. He’ll make the Bears passing game relevant, but not great. They need a O line and better receivers before they can accomplish that. Overall, Martz is a victim of his own intellect. He’s brilliant and knows offense, but he’s known as a person who doesn’t take orders well from GM’s who don’t know squat! I know guys who haven’t done half of what he’s done, and are called in to be head coaches every time they’re fired…… Go Figure!!!!

by Shauns219 on Sep 9, 2010 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll take Harbaugh, Cowher, or Frazier.

If the season goes down the drain, Martz won’t be a candidate cause Cutler would almost certainly have another down year.

Wow...

It’s a tough choice. I do expect Lovie to finish his contract unless the Bears go 2-14 or some such horror! I have no expectation that Lovie will turn this team around, so I see a coaching change either in 2011 or 2012 depending on the labor issues. I have tended to go toward Les Frazier because he seems to have the outward football smarts, but he’s a Cover-2 disciple and I think a change in philosophy is in order. I would like to see if Cowher could restore the Bear’s total image, but I’m not sold on him either. IMO, Cowher represents the best break with the post-Ditka era flounderings of Wanny, Jauron, and Lovie. I am more interested in a change in FO and ownership than anything else.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!

by LostInSTL on Sep 9, 2010 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

The McCaskey's will never sell

and I’m okay with that. It’s Bears history, and that stands for something. Of course, it’s also the sole source of income for them, so they aren’t about to sell the goose that lays the golden eggs.

There do need to be pretty major FO changes though. The Bears payroll is one of the higher ones in the league, but the talent evaluation sucks.

by Virto on Sep 9, 2010 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Very true.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that they could possibly be stupid enough to not realize that winning will equal EVEN MORE MONEY than they get now.

But then I see them make decisions, and I say, “Well, that happened.”

You Bears fans aren't very optimistic

What happened to all the Supebowl talk and playoff chant that went on the last couple of years? I’ve heard nothing but who’s taking over at head coach if Cutler throws INT’s and Mike Martz’s failed scheme. Wow, never thought I’d actually say that it’s easier being a Lion’s fan than a Bears fan!

I’ll take 2-14 with marked signs of improvement over 7-9 with a front office making desperation moves to save their jobs.

Martz will end up being one of the worst coach hires for Chicago in a long time. His system puts a premium on protection from the front 5. Sadly for Chicago fans, the O line is not going to give Cutler the time he needs to make those throws consistently and he is going to end up getting killed. Add to that, his propensity for throwing INTs. He threw 5, 14, 18 and 26 in his four years in the league.

Simply put, Martz’s system is not meant for a QB that already throws INTs.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

63 in his first four years. Peyton Manning threw an even 100 in his first five seasons (81 in his first four), and everyone knows ol’ #18 is rubbish.

… there are a few optimists left, but when we speak we tend to be considered oblivious, etc. So usually, it’s easier to read about everyone else predicting doom rather than try to convince them otherwise.

Hopefully none of the above.

Im wishing for Mike Zimmer, Greg Manusky, or if the packers wreck @$$ this year maybe nab Dom Capers, that would be tricky because we would have to orient almost our whole draft to a 3-4 switch, which would weaken them.

what i dont get about the love stays because of the lockout excuse is...

if there is a lockout they are STILL paying him to do nothing…more likely they may not want to pay the NEW coach to do nothing…

but thats ONLY if they got for coach McRedFace ScreamerSpit (Cowher) or someone similar of that ilk…

if they go the cheap coordinator (leslie frazier, chico) route they will end up paying substantially less money and i could see them giving everyone the heave hoe

by thelastpoet on Sep 9, 2010 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

But

I could be wrong here, but I think if they let Lovie go, they’d still have to pay him on top of paying a new coach to not do anything either…

Bears need to hire someone other than Cowher

he coached forever, and basically won only 1 superbowl, and IMO was responsible for Tomlin’s superbowl, he put the team together.

but someone from like Belichek’s camp…like Tedy Bruschi, cause we can all say how hard it is to coach to a superbowl, but i believe the Patriots have a hell of a formula.

These choices were lame.

Martz and Tice have both failed as head coaches, so there out. I dont see Harbaugh leaving the college ranks anytime soon (by his own choosing), and besides Im praying to the football gods that he will take the job at Michigan next year. Leslie Frazier and Lovie were the only ones that made sense(the only eay Lovie keeps the job is if there is a lockout). I dont really care for Frazier, hes to Lovie’esque. Im pullin for Ron Rivera.

Voted for Les Frazier in the poll (the only 85 player on the list) but I agree with everyone here who says a change of attitude is the way to go. We need to get back to playing Bears football, the way it was when we dominated in the 80’s. Guys like Frazier & Rivera know all about that. Time for an ex-Bear to get the call. It’s long overdue.

I voted Lovie,

I think that he’ll still be here not only because of the lockout, but because I’m hopeful that this season won’t be terrible and I don’t want to make a prediction like this before seeing how it plays out. I’m hoping Lovie will surprise us. :]
