2011 Offseason Moves
Well, that was tough. I hate the end of a season, unless it brings with it a championship. Knowing this was the Bears goal as well, (and Reading the Hitman's post) I know our boys in the locker room felt the same. But let's face it: there's no logical argument for us "falling off" next year. True, our drafts haven't been the stuff of legend, but like him or not, we wouldn't be here without JA's free agent signings of the last 2 years. Here's how we get better by addition; I'll leave out who needs to go because I'm thinking positively. These can come via Free Agency (which I know is messed up this offseason) or the draft. This is my first FanPost; follow me after the jump for some honest discussion of what the Bears need to do to win it all next year.
First, my philosophy: games are won in the trenches. We all agree, right? Seeing as our defense held the NFC Super Bowl representatives to 14 points in the title game, but our offense was impotent at best, obviously we need big guys up front. I think Tice likes Webb, and he's young, so keep him. Garza has been better, and is getting old, so RG should be our first priority. Kreutz is a badass. Old, but mean, experienced, and a true leader. Williams is young, but I think he's the turd Tice was talking about. He's served a purpose (filling in a hole [TWSS] where a better man should be) and could be a great all-purpose 6th man lineman so-to-speak. However, if we could get a true LG a-hole like Steve Hutchinson or Logan Mankins, we need to. Omiyale impressed me this year. But again, how many better quality guys are out there that we could lay our hands on? All in all, I say go for the middle of the line first, then the Tackles.
How to get these big boys? I think at least one should be part of this year's "Big Free Agency Spending Spree" in order to basically guarantee what we're going to get. I know things go poorly sometimes (Haynesworth) but Tice will have enough input to make sure we get the right one. Draft the rest, again, Tice knows his proverbial OL stuff.
Next, the receiving corps. Again, our weak offensive skills couldn't produce when needed most. Come on, it's 14 points!!! I'm talking big bodied, go-up-and-get-it (copyright JC6) guys. This should be the other part of our Free Agency. If these things aren't being discussed now in our front office I'd be surprised. The best take I've heard from someone here was we've got too many of the same type of receiver. Yes, I know MM likes small shifty guys, but Cutler would sure like a Calvin or Andre Johnson...and what QB wouldn't? Give us these guys, and we're in the Super Bowl this year, with a chance to beat the Steelers (unlike the Packers).
That's it, as far as I see it, for absolutes. However, if we're smart, we'll at least look at...our defense. I love it. But...a real DT, like Suh or Kevin Williams pre-StarCaps would make our line do bad, bad things to people. Say what you will of the Tampa-2, but if we had faster closing speed in our corners and safeties, those 14 points don't happen. Who here didn't know that Rodgers was going to come out throwing the typical Cover-2 beaters for big yards? Our corners knew it, they just couldn't stop it. We don't have the best personnel in the secondary to make the Cover-2 as dominant as it could be.
Finally, what would you say to Clay Matthews little brother from Oregon coming in to be Urlacher's understudy in the peak/decline of 54's career? He's not as big, but there's a LOT about that scenario that I would like. If GB produces QB's correctly, why can't we do that with our signature position?

If you want a DT like Suh, look no further than Corey Liuget

As an Illinois alumn
I would LOVE to draft him! Dude is a monster and flies under the radar
Vic Koenning is my homeboy.
My good friend Akeem Spence is a player for yall
I was on his High School football team as a matter of fact. Anyways after watching a few games as well as researching he is absolutely the ideal fit at the 3 tech. Big with frame for more weight, yet just so damn quick!

Yes!
Like Spence a lot. Has a ton of potential. Hope he can pick up the slack next year with Liuget gone
Vic Koenning is my homeboy.
I believe in him
He was always that large, keeps getting bigger. It was a real treat to play LB right behind him lol. Back to Liuget; he is THE ideal replacement for Tommie Harris, bigger, much stronger, and still as every bit as quick if not faster that Tommie.

I brought Liuget up a little while ago...
As a fellow Illini, I have watched Luiget play and he can be the best player on the field when he wants to be. I question his drive/motor sometimes. While I feel like a OT/OG would be the best for us in the first round, I wouldn’t be too upset if they took Luiget if he fell to them. Instant upgrade over Adams/Toenia/Harris combo.

You know who else was questioned about their motor?
Julius Peppers. Hot Rod just has something in his coaching that brings the fire in his players. Liuget would instantly become a star in Chicago. Mark it.

I just noticed the bears have less payroll than the cubs..
but they’re still at $120 million or 10th most in the league in 2010 – not sure about 2011 projections, but considering a 53 man roster there’s only so much money to spread around to important positions… This is the biggest deal though – finding good players without overpaying. This is also why poor drafts have hurt us – FA’s are expensive. That’s why we can’t just sign the best player at each position off the FA market – we’d have to pay them. Just upgrading the bears to high-elite level at 4 positions would cost them $20-$40 million in additional payroll that they either don’t have or won’t be able to spend under next year’s Cap. The BOTTOM five payrolls in 2010? The Kansas city Chiefs, the Baltimore Ravens, the Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots, and.. the Green Bay Packers.
You don’t win via free agency, you revert to it when poor drafting and player development leaves you desperate.

True, but
we have a lot of money tied up in a some players that just don’t deserve it. One in particular being Tommie Harris. So while you are adding money to the cap allotment you should also be freeing money up.
I do really like the Matthews kid from Oregon.
I think in around the 5th round we should find a big reciever like you said. 1st round needs to be G/T. I think John Clay may be falling to round 2. If would could pick him up to change the pace up in the backfield, that would be extremely nice. maybe 3rd round go with a C. I feel like Kreutz may start to really decline next year, even though I feel like he’s been taking small steps back for 3 years now. We should also target a backup running back sometime.
Like the guy said above me… It’s ALL about drafting. A solid FA here and there is always a necessary bonus, but drafting is what builds a championship team.
i dont think puncey will fall at 29 but there should be one avaiabe in round 2.
i say if baldwin fallx to us take him. we can grab a tackle and og/c in 2/3 rounds. i would look 4 clay in about the 4th. if u want a power back Leshoure is the way to go.
I kind of like this kid in the 5th.......

He looks good but he
is exactly what we already have at WR. We need a big guy like Baldwin from Pitt or(a guy i like) Pettis from Boise.
I dont know who you guys been watching buttttt
Bears dont need running backs we have forte whos very young and taylor enough said.We need offensive tackels both left and right,we also need a number 1 wide reciever.I think with some of the guys were gonna cut we have enough to get all 3 in the free agent market.I think williams inside is ok for now and webb can be moved inside hes to slow to play tackel on the outside.I think with the 29th pic in first round you have to take the best ol there,2nd round u go either ol again or dl
Not sure about this
Say what you will of the Tampa-2, but if we had faster closing speed in our corners and safeties, those 14 points don’t happen.
If you noticed during the first Packers’ series the Bears were inexplicably playing the run instead of the pass. Which opened a ton of space in the middle for Jennings to run those inside patterns. Check out our LBs especially Briggs; he was caught peering into the backfield a few times. I don’t believe it had anything to do with our CBs. They prevented the big play all year long.
I’m not sure how Garza rated out in his metrics this year, but he’s been steady for the Bears. Either way, I agree they need to look inside first. Center and LG depending on what they plan on doing with CW.

The safeties
in the first half looked lost. They either lined up 15 yards deep and backpedeled on the snap (even without the WRs running deep routes), or they were on the line of scrimmage, when there weren’t any receivers running short routes.
Harris looked tentative on the first series, and imo was a big reason they shredded us that first series.
DEJESUS!!!

Call me the pessimist
but I am not sold on our tackles.
DB blitzes and pass-rushing LBs stormed our castle all year long because our Tackles don’t have the speed to get out to the edge rushers/blitzers.
Omiyale surrendered 13 sacks this season and Webb 10.5 (in 12 starts).
That almost makes me miss our 2008 O line.
Corey Wootton, the Favre Slayer.
Draft...
I think the draft should be a combo of these… (Angelo could also take a DE in any round)
1: OT/OG or possibly DT?
2: DT or best available OG/OT/C?
3: OT/OG/C or possibly WR if they have someone in mind
4: WR/C
For those who feel we should draft a RB, remember that we have Forte, Taylor (still has a lot on his contract), Unga (who we gave up the 7th rounder for) and Bell. Unga was stuck on IR this year and is a big 237 lb. back.
We do need a WR with some size as I believe Aromashodu will not be a Bear next year. I don’t expect them to draft a WR in the first three rounds. They will most likely draft someone later and then bring in some UFAs for tryouts in the spring.
I have to believe that they will take a DT in the first three rounds as Harris may not be with the team next year and if he still is, he isn’t the player we hoped he would be. Toenia and Adams are good backups/subs. Melton may end up a starter. We need someone who will dominate and thats why they may take a DT in the first if Angelo has his way.
I’m sure Angelo will also insist on a DE somewhere since it just seems to be Peppers/Idonije and Wooton.
Lastly, they need to take a corner somewhere in the first 4 rounds since Tillman will be a year older and Jennings/Bowman aren’t the longterm answer. I would prefer they got someone with a little more height because Tim Jennings against Calvin Johnson will give me a heart attack every time.
They could also pick up a QB somewhere late as a project/3rd stringer if there aren’t any FAs that seem appealing.
They will probably look at a few punters after the draft to give Maynard some healthy competition. Maynard has been great but he has lost some leg.
Cant wait for the draft.

With Martz now playing a role in draft selections I wouldn't count on this draft being one of the usual ones.
You just may see a WR drafted early, perhaps the 2nd round as Martz always wants as many weapons as possible. Nobody expected the Lions to select Calvin Johnson and BAM he gets drafted by the Lions.

No one expected it
only because the Lions had just spend three first rounders in a row on WR… and two years later, still needed a WR. Or a QB. Or an offensive line. Or, well, a team.
Actually, given the state of the Lions at the time, I think most people expected it.

I think people are forgetting the severity of our situation.
WR and LT are out major needs. Period.
Earl Bennett is a good route running possession guy. Other than that, we have NO ONE that can or will fight for a ball. Johnny Knox has REPEATEDLY shown that he prefers to either catch the ball with his stomach or pads in traffic, and cannot or will not create separation with his body. He actually showed some positive signs of a being a legitimate #1 against the Jets, and then reverted to form for the rest of the year. And I love Devin Hester, but he and Knox are the same player…short, extremely fast in space, but best served as a #3 option. Personally, I think drafting WR’s in the 1st round is risky. I would rather go get someone in FA that hasn’t exactly risen to stardom, but has proven that they can run routes while providing a bigger target than what we have.
Next, Frank Omiyale gave up around 17-19 sacks this year. That is NOT tolerable. Frank Omiyale, while performing admirably after being thrust into a tough spot, is NOT our LT of the future. We NEED to take advantage of a draft that has a good stock (3-4 first rounders) of talented LT’s. Anthony Costonzo from BC sticks out as a guy that might be around late in the 1st. If he is there, I think we have to take him first.
