Put yourself in Jay's shoes.
Lets discuss the scenario in story mode.
- Cutler gets hit, tears a portion of his MCL which is a ligament that supports your knee, prevents it from medial displacement.
-What happens when you tear a ligament? inflammation. Your Knee is in a capsule that surrounds the joint. It fills up with blood and fluid. With the swelling and edema comes the pain.
- So Cutler throws a pick to Knox, he realizes he cant plant and thats the reason he underthrew that pass. Hes been playing with the pain and hasnt complained yet.
- Half time, they go check out his knee.. its swollen, now they have a choice, bench him or let him play. Cutler says, lemme give it another shot. Note that when players get an injury and want to play through it, they take a cortisone shot which sort of blocks the pain, Cutler cannot take a cortisone shot because he is a type 1 diabetic, and he could suffer severe hyperglycemia with it. So for people who question his toughness, he wants to give it a shot with all the pain he's feeling, he intends to play through it all, so its not pain thats altering his decision, and its not giving up because the score was 14-0 the whole time.
-3rd quarter, he gives it a shot, he plays a drives, risks getting hit and tearing his MCL and ACL which is a risk of aggravating the sprain, he put his knee on the line this drive. He goes through the drive and realizes his knee is stiffer, more fluid, and he cant put weight on it, and anyone who's thrown a football knows if you cant put weight on your plant leg, you cant throw. Forget about mobility and the fact that he is a sitting duck with Capers' special blitz packages coming his way Raji, Matthews Woodson or Williams. He put all his trust in his O line that gave up an NFL high 52 sacks this season. He doest perform, he realizes he cant throw, and hes basically hurting the team, theres no way he could play 2 more quarters in that state. The bears game plan around his mobility and around his ability to scramble, any logical coach would pull him at this point. So they do, they pull him.
-Todd Collins starts warming up (bad coaching decision), Cutler steps off the field. They tag him as questionable, hoping for a miracle that if needed he could come back for one more drive.
-While Collins is sucking it up, Cutler does some routine tests, like riding the bike etc, to see if its possible for him to make a return, but Collins gets injured, Tactical error, now the 3rd stringer has to come in. If the 3rd stringer comes in before the 4th quarter, Cutler cannot make a return.
-Hanie plays better than Collins. Puts some life into the team. The fox camera crew takes about 4-5 10 second clips of Cutler bummed on the sideline (He injured his knee in what may be the most important game in his life), thats a minute out of about 100 minutes. For some reason people who cannot see whats going on the rest of the time assume Cutler sits there the whole time, even though Hanie himself says cutler coached him on the sidelines.
- Cutler sits and stands on the sidelines. The MCL prevents medial displacement, these activities do not favor your knee collapsing inward. As for walking up the stairs, the inflammation has probably calmed down by now, he could be wearing a brace, he could be on pain killers, or someone could be lying, it makes a hell of a story for the guy who wrote the article doesnt it. It doesnt matter, an MRI doesnt lie.
- After the game, reporter tell Cutler about the fans and fellow NFL players reactions. His eyes fill up with tears, he wishes he never got injured, he wishes he was able to plant, he wishes he could have carried his team to the superbowl, but injuries happen its a part of the game. People act like they want it more than him, this guy took 52 sacks and a concussion for this team and city, he stayed in the pocket for second longer just to make a throw knowing he would get hit. He's never complained once since he's been here, hes never criticized a teammate or a coach. You dont think he wants it? He's not doing it for the money. He could own this town if he wanted, with endorsement deals and basking in the limelight. But he's said it, hes not worthy of it just yet. Yea he's a p***y, a b**ch, and a baby.

Anyone who dogs cutler dose not know him or football
If it wasen’t for cutler bears would not make the playoffs plain and simple. The guy got sacked 57 times and probly hit anthor 150 and he still played. It was only a matter of time before he got hurt..If the bears dont get him help on the OL and at WR angelo should be fired. You can put any qb on this line they wont do any better.
What is it with espn and fox always dogging the bears are you guys freakin serious..? I think they need ti change there reporters and put some people on there that know something about football or report what there supposed to report.
Make that two , Great write up !

Uhm
Didn’t it come out later yesterday that Collins wasn’t actually injured. I believe Zaidman reported it.

He did.
The only problem is that coaching staff didn’t realize that it was a career-ending injury.

forgot about that
i remember him holding his shoulder after his last drive, so i guess i assumed that factored into the decision of putting in hanie.

Well said
Poor Jay. Hope his teammates and family are giving him all the support our dumb fanbase won’t
Vic Koenning is my homeboy.
I hadn't considered the impact of his diabetes on his ability to have an injection.
Regardless, I still support Jay as our QB, have NOT burned my #6 jersey in effigy, and will strongly support Jay to anyone that wants a piece.
I've been quiet long enough!
I’ve been reading stuff here for 2 years and when all this Cutler bashing started, I finally said enuff is enuff (and yes i know i spelled it wrong). First @the online bashers – Have you ever had an injury like this? Have you ever played a down of football (Madden 10 doesn’t cout)? I played 4 years college and 3 years pro and have had significant knee injuries and can tell you that each one is different. Now @ Deion Sanders, Torry Holt and all the other bashers…None of you have ever had this injury have you? I’ve been out of ball now for 16 years and I still have pain every day due to these injuries. So to you I say SHUT THE HELL UP! This kid took a beating most of the early season and proved to me that he’s tough as hell. I’m a Chicago native and life long Bears fan from a line of life long Bears fans and he’s the best Bears QB I’ve seen in my lifetime! Good luck Jay and shot out to Urlacher and Lovie for putting you GD FOOT DOWN AND SUPPORT YOUR QB!

I only played in HS, but I sprained my MCL in practice.
Mine was only a Grade I, which isn’t as severe as Jay’s, IIRC. It hurt like hell. I could walk and climb stairs and whatnot, but if I had to sidestep someone in the halls, holy balls, it was like I was dying. Didn’t MJD miss his teams last 2 games when they were struggling for the playoffs? Didn’t Deion miss a whole season for a SPRAINED TOE?!? C’MON, MAN!

No thank you!
I’d rather give myself a frontal-lobe lobotomy than put up with the abuse.

Bronco fan here. Loved Cutler when he was here, devastated when he left. I couldn’t, and still can’t, understand why trading him was even considered a possibility in the first place. Oh well. It’s in the past and we can’t change that. I never doubted his toughness. Diabetes, hit at an astounding pace, nine sacks in one half, never complained, just got back up and went to work.
Loved the article. I was floored by all the other FB players who were tweeting the crap they were tweeting. If anyone should have been able to understand what was going on, you would think it would be so-called fellow FB players. The players who did this, may end up regretting they ever opened this can of worms next time they get dinged and have to come out of a game.
I believe that something like this can make the team stronger. Make Jay even better. He was certainly looking good ever since the bye week when they figured out the pass protection.

Anyone got a list of names on all the active and former players that tweeted or gave a negative comment on cutler being a quitter or sissy? Like to see all of the their injuries in relation to cutler and how credible they are for what they said.

Right on!!
Listen Cutler truly did EVERYTHING the Bears asked out of him this year. Between all the sacks and M. Martz as an pass happy O coordinator I thought Cutler would be on pace to throw 60 picks this year. Instead he stood in pocket when he had to and he took many shots (and not shockingly really got hurt once this year), used his legs to extend the play, or smartly threw it away.
Is he perfect?? No but perhaps two year straight with the same O coordinator would fix that. In previous Bears team they won IN SPITE OF their Quarterback this year they won game BECAUSE OF their Quarterback. He is still young in the system I don’t really relish the thought of playing him twice a year.
So everyone lay off him and enjoy having a top tier QB in your backfield for a decade or so!!

i am looking forward to
a lot of cutler vs. rodgers battles for years to come. if stafford can stay healthy and continue improving this division could actually be a good one for this position.
