I'm curious to see how they will do

I think Conte could be the future FS for us and I’m looking forward seeing him play. About Wright, I think most feel like he disappointed somewhat so far, but it’s not like all hope is lost imo. If he just cleans up his act, stops making fatal mistakes and starts making tackles, he’ll be fine.

Wright..

Yet another failed upper round draft pick…groan. Too bad Meriweather isn’t working out either..I guess they weren’t kidding about him lapsing so badly from his pro bowl form that they had to cut him. Or he just hasn’t caught on to our system yet.

by Pretender85 on Oct 13, 2011 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Conte at FS? He doesn't strike me as an in-the-box type guy...

BTW, is this Major’s last stand here? When’s he gonna make some plays and force a turnover?

by Steve von Horn on Oct 13, 2011 1:43 PM CDT reply actions

I guess I just feel Nick Roach is up for replacement, and maybe Meriweather has cover skills that are up to par as a linebacker.

His freelancing wouldn’t play well anywhere in this scheme (which is why the initial move was so questionable anyways), but he could do a lot less damage as LB and might actually work well as a blitzer.

Roach is far from amazing

but he is serviceable. There are worse options.

by Virto on Oct 13, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that he isn't an "in the box type of guy" points to him being a FS

Strong Safety typically plays closer to the line and is counted upon more in run support. Conversly the Free Safety is typically more responsible in pass coverage.

And to be technical about it, the FS and SS aren't as distinguishable in the Tampa 2 base packages anyways.

With Carimi out, U guys were wondering about Frank Omiyale in starting lineup. According 2 a source, Omiyale won’t be getting another shot.

I didn't really mind the actual pickup in 2009 from a depth perspective.

But then came the 4 year, $14 million (!!!) deal, followed by the left guard experiment, after which came all the shuffling that we saw last year. Despite all the lack of continuity he’s experienced during his tenure here, it has come to the point where none of that should serve as an excuse for all the mental and physical lapses we’ve seen from him. The problem is that the Bears, being stubborn/oblivious/afraid still keep him on the team. And even though they’ve moved away from playing him as a starter, they’re still keeping themselves in the position where they are dependent on him as a crucial backup.

I have a feeling that the Harris benching has ....

…… more to do with his injury than his play . Meriweather has looked OK to me , he just seems to still be learning the system . Conte could very well be the future at FS and Wright needs to show that he can handle thing on the big stage . Honestly I’m kinda exicted to see what Conte can do .

I didn’t expect to see much of him this year. I think a lot of people are very nervous about Conte starting a game having seen him as a wasted draft pick.

Since we are on the subject of benching, isn't Nick Roach next on the chopping block?

I understand they have been playing a lot of Nickel, but Roach has been a complete ghost on gamedays. I seriously can’t recall a single play he has made in run support or coverage all year. His name just plain doesn’t come up on broadcasts, and even after coach tape reviews to add tackles, he has 9 solos on the year!

Sure he’s not the most important guy in the starting lineup in this system, but shouldn’t the Bears be getting more out of that position? Depth at linebacker is poor, but somebody else could just as easily be a ghost, so why not try it?

I'd be fine with giving it a shot.

I guess there is the risk that Iwuh might actually get noticed for the wrong reasons, which at least Roach has managed to avoid when out there.

Maybe the strong-side LB in this system is supposed to be like a great cornerback—when you don’t hear their name they are doing a good job—but that’s not how I remember it, even going back to last year where I always saw Pisa flying around.

Now this nearly sent me in shock

I guess Lovie Smith must be pissed if he is going to do this. This sends a clear message to the lockeroom that if he is unhappy with their play NOW, they will be benched.

So, if Conte and Wright both play well, is this truly our safety tandem of the future? And if they both play poorly, does Lovie then hit the eject button on this experiment and go back to Harris and Meriweather?

What a mess this season has started off in…

That and also this...

Lovie realizes that outside of the GB game we’ve lost because of one reason…big plays. It’s what it symbolizes. It means that the formula of playing D, causing turnovers, great special teams, and the offense not screwing up is over. Because if Merriweather and Harris are giving up big plays in his Cover 2, then you might as well start the kids and see what you got because it can’t get any worse.

The trib

has an interview up with Harris…basically he assumes he’s done as a Bear.

I don't understand what he's whining about

He played terribly. That’s what happens when you play terribly, you get benched

Below is a direct quote as to the reason why both safeties and not just Meriweather are getting benched.
"I’m not satisfied," said coach Lovie Smith. "We talk about all of it. We haven’t done as good a job as we needed to, and Chris is a part of that."

Plain and simple. Now, its not saying that it is where both players won’t be dressed, rather I think its where both players are shown that if they don’t step their act up, others will get the opportunity. I still expect both to play, unless Wright and Conte prove otherwise.

Got to wonder how the vets on defense are feeling after this.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

So after McNabb has his first 400 yard game of the season

and Josh Freeman throws for 300 and 4 TD’s then we’ll switch back from Conte and Wright to Harris and Merriweather.

Or is this Lovie’s way of saying, “we’re playing to see what we have for next season cause this season isn’t looking too good”

Ya, since

getting gashed by CJ for 150 yds and Jahvid Best, I repeat, JAHVID BEST for 168 yds is so much better

I dunno..

Lovie has followed through on his demotions.

We will probably see both of them play, but miss the first series in an effort to make them miss a “start”

I think they'll earn it back

Heard they’ve been giving the offense hell in practice

brandon lloyd is available

Maybe we can trade merriwether and omiyale for lloyd and a 4th rounder.

Watch the Ravens OL and CB cuts carefully

Wright/Omi for Lloyd and a 4th.

Yes, please. IMO Brandon at least has something to give. Wright, OTOH, just looks lost and untalented out there…

Good

MAJOR WRIGHT SHOULD START. He is one of the few young Bears that actually has the potential to be a starter for years to come to not start him for Merriweather or Harris is/has been a bad decision.

Merriweather…. um let’s see, which decision do I trust more Belicheck getting rid of him or Angelo bringing him in.

Chris Harris…. that is one tall midget, but he is still a midget.

Play the game i play most often with the WRs… would they start for any other team? would they start for good teams? would they start on elite teams?
[lol, this made me think… Olin Kreutz could start for us]

meh

Olin wouldn’t be able to make Omiyale and Webb play any better

Normally I would agree with this

But i think that in fact Olin could and did. He is one of those high motor guys actually capable of getting his teammates to step up their own game(s)
