Venable moved to LB?

No doubt that Wright should be behind Hitman on the depth chart, but they really think a backup safety makes for better LB depth than Tinoisamoa?

Venable as I recall...

was originally an LB they thought would fit better at safety.

After all, now that Danieal Manning’s gone we need someone to move around willy-nilly!

And wasn't Dom DiCicco a safety they thought would be a better LB a la Urlacher?

Let's not forget guys like Rashied Davis and Devin Hester

I’m wondering if JA just throws at a dartboard to determine what position people will fill.

[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

You give him too much credit.

It’s a pair of bingo cages, one for offense and one for defense. Pull out a ball, that’s the position that player plays.

It’s a wonder Cutler wasn’t permanently moved to WR, or maybe that’s what they’re seeing with those Wildcat packages…

well, unlike the receivers

since he’s used to be bludgeoned by 250lb OLBs, I doubt he’d flinch in the sight of 190lb cornerbacks .

He pretty much sucked there too

If he isn’t physical enough to play WR, he sure wouldn’t cut it at DB

by TheMan1 on Oct 8, 2011 9:32 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

In his defense

he only really had 1 season there…and he did kinda deflect the hail mary in 06 against Detroit

I still think he should just be a PR/KR and in on a handful of offensive plays

But I also believe in putting a player at a position and leaving them there.

Just what I expected to happen

With the return of Chris Harris at SS, along with the combination of Wright simply not getting the job done as well as Brandon Meriweather being an OK starter at FS when pressed into action, Hitman and Meriweather would be the starters at SS and FS respectively, while Major Wright would ride the pines.

The photo caption confirms it all:

but I see no difference between Wright or Meriweather so far. Both have been mediocre.

Major Wright looked decent beside Chris Harris

Ive been saying all along Meriweather and Harris should start together. Meriweather is decent and will look better playing alongside 46… Major Wright is a Better SS(aka 4th LB) than he is at playing centerfield

Ya know..

Just think if Meriweather had been on the team since the begining of pre-season. He’d be up to speed and be preforming at a high level. Harris/Meriweather will be a great safety tandem, just give BM some time to catch up to the rest of the defense.

That is a major base to my arguement

Compared to players who have had far more time in the system (Major Wright and Craig Steltz) he has out-performed either of them by a considerable margin, IMO.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Oct 8, 2011 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

But the flipside of using that as a base...does knowledge in the system

far outweigh considerable difference in talent? I mean…Brandon Merriweather vs Craig Steltz…I’m taking Brandon over Craig in the talent department, unless its “who can knock out his own teammates better”

You could say that

But, coverage-wise Brandon Meriweather has done a far better job than any other safety not name Chris Harris who dares to wear the navy and orange.

and I think that speaks volumes about our depth…that a guy can come in and based on 4 weeks of practice and talent can outpreform guys in the system for multiple years

I'm happy with this.

No real reason to believe our drafted safeties will be good, so lets stick with the Free Agents.

Merriweather is getting better every week

once he gets the details of the defense down he will be solid. He has to know when he can freelance back there and when he has to be in a specific spot when the CBs are expecting him to be there. Once he gets these nuiances I expect the defense to start looking good again. . I am not sure Wright will ever get there, sad too the guy has the physical chops. He is going to have to really knuckle down and become a student of the game otherwise he will be our 4th or 5th safety bust in recent memory.

White Sox fans need not apply.

by Bears-Cubs Bulls on Oct 7, 2011 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

Seems a bit early in his career (1.25 seasons) to doubt if Wright will ever get it. Meriweather, on the other hand, was shown the door at New England because he showed that he couldn’t be disciplined over the course of 4 seasons – yet we’re surprised when he blew it when given a chance to start?

What does that say about either Wright or Steltz?

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Oct 8, 2011 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

You'd be surprised

Ever heard of the expression “A New Beginning”? Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to be reborn again in life. I like that they gave Meriweather a shot, and I like that it’s a one year try-before-you-buy deal. And who knows? Maybe if Major goes to a different system he’ll play better. The point is there is no sure a priori way of knowing who will play good.

by PatientBear on Oct 8, 2011 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed with Spongie

If his head game matched his physical talent level, he’d be a force. Would it really have been that bad, in hindsight, to pay Dman 4 mil a season? We would have spent .75m more than just acquiring Meriweather for a guy who was a great fit (and a special teams ace).

by Sound_Automatic on Oct 10, 2011 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Alot easier to get "IT"

when you have someone with knowledge of the situation explaining it to you. How much is a “rookie” in Major Wright teaching you as opposed to Chris Harris a vet? Major Wright hasnt been in the situation enough to have the hands on experience that Chris does lets see how they work together….

I mean we should be used to musical chairs at safety and o line by now

I respect your OPINION but i also value the FACTS, To save time, lets just ASSume IM NEVER WRONG

by Tommy Ohyeah Mcduffie on Oct 8, 2011 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

4 games?

Wow. In that case Cutler should’ve been cut after that 5 INT games against the 49ers in 09 and Tillman should’ve been long gone after he allowed that 90+ yard catch by Berrian a few years ago.

You have to give people a chance to actually prove something before you can say if they’re don’t have “it”.

He was given plenty of chances to redeem himself in NE, and he still played like a knucklehead

It’s not just one play where’s he’s failed to stay in position, its happened several times over the past couple games. He already came in with red flags concerning his coverage skills and inability to play the run correctly, and he hasn’t shown anything to quell those claims against him.

You can say that he is still learning the system, but you could also say that he had plenty of time to learn the system at NE, and he still couldn’t grasp it. Those same mistakes he was making with NE are being made with the Bears. The guy has had a history of being boneheaded at times, and it shows.

You can also chalk it up to not having Chris Harris by your side, but are we really going to depend on the Hitman that much? At what point do you expect Meriweather to start playing and acting like the veteran that he’s supposed to be? I understand Major Wright being inconsistent, but Meriweather really doesn’t have an excuse.

I want Meriweather to succeed as much as the next guy, but there’s a thin line when it comes to players with a rep like his.

And please don’t bring up the Pro Bowl argument, I can name 3 or 4 safeties that were more deserving to have his PB spot.

by Midway Bully on Oct 8, 2011 1:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

If you ask me NE's system just wasn't a good fit for Meriweather

He is indeed a guy who likes taking chances. In our system, it is a tad more forgiving on players of his type than the scheme in NE.

And bottomline, he is our second best safety on this team.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Oct 8, 2011 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

In our system, it is a tad more forgiving on players of his type than the scheme in NE.

In our Tampa 2 system, where the safety’s priority is to sit deep and prevent the big play over the top?

I know I poke fun at you for youthful homerism, but Steve Smith was a yard away from scoring on the 50-yard reception when Meriweather simply didn’t execute his one and only responsibility on that deep route – to pick up Smith after he’d been handed off by the CB. One mistake, 50 yards, 1st and goal on the 1. He was known for lacking discipline coming out of NE. Explain to me just how that makes Meriweather a better fit for the Tampa 2?

He doesn’t have to worry about run protection too much. Just stopping guys from running past him…

by Doshi on Oct 9, 2011 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

And that's the primary concern with him

He’d rather go for some ill advised hit than try to actually tackle the guy or break up the damn pass

This was a long time coming

I never liked Major Wright to begin with: the TD the Pats scored on the Bears in the last seconds of the first half in 2010 season was enough for me. The kid just plays dumb: he always bites into the fake, then takes a bad angle and tackles poorly to try to make up for it. No thanks. Bears don’t need this.

Meriweather should be next on the chopping block. Right now he should start, but with a short leash. If you wanna play for the Bears, learn the scheme and listen to the coaches. That simple.

by PatientBear on Oct 8, 2011 11:07 AM CDT reply actions

Indeed

Conte had better pan out for us

by BOBdaBEAR on Oct 8, 2011 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d say that Patriots score was 50% on the coaches. With time to run only one play and the Patriots needing to score on it or go into the locker room empty (albeit up by a load), why call a zone with so many defenders underneath, leaving a rookie on an island to be exploited? At the very least, a cover-4.

When I assume, I'm not "making an ass out of u and me"... I'm actually putting u between me and an ass.
