Revenge is a Dish...: Bears' Defense Dominates in Win over Lions 37-13

When talking about the Bears' MVPs for this game, you have to go pretty far down the list to find the usual suspects of Matt Forte and Jay Cutler. On back to back Lions' drives, Matthew Stafford was picked off for touchdowns. Devin Hester was punted to three times - one went to midfield, another went for a touchdown, and another midfield return was called back for a penalty.

Of course, a dominant defensive and special teams showing by the Bears will be largely overshadowed by the brawl that erupted when Stafford attempted to pop DJ Moore's head off like a kindergartner on a daffodil and Moore retaliated, earning him an ejection. Of course, in another twist of appropriateness, one of the timely interceptions was caught by... his replacement, Corey Graham. Add in two fumbles by Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson, one of which led to Matt Forte's touchdown in the first quarter, and the Lions were in a hole the Bears' defense just wouldn't let them out of. Amazing what some actual defensive pressure will do for a team.

Quick, victorious numbers after the jump.

Star-divide

Jay Cutler: 9/19, 123 yards - 68.5 passer rating - fumble lost

Matt Forte: 18 carries, 64 yards, TD
Marion Barber: 13 carries, 27 yards
Earl Bennett: 6 receptions, 81 yards
Charles Tillman/Major Wright: INT TD each
Devin Hester: Punt Return TD
Sacks: Julius Peppers, Anthony Adams

Matthew Stafford: 33/63, 329 yards, TD, 4 INT - 46.3 passer rating (But he was wearing gloves! MVP!)

Maurice Morris: 10 carries, 44 yards
Nate Burleson: 9 targets, 8 receptions, 83 yards
Calvin Johnson: 19 targets (that is not a typo), 7 receptions, 81 yards
Tony Scheffler: 7 targets, 3 receptions, 37 yards, TD
Sacks: Cliff Avril, Louis Delmas

How would they get him time in the future? The one time they could have done that is over with Garza resigned.

I don’t foresee him surpassing Chris Williams (at least until his deal is over) Garza or Spencer.

He's not going to surpass Garza or Williams, for sure.

Spencer is possible, but I think he’s more a future look for when Spencer gets moved to center after Garza is done. They’ve been high on him since last year, though. Well before Spencer was in the picture or Williams was considered a lock to start.

But I think he’ll be around a while. He’s only 24.

Offense did just enough to help win the game

Not Cutler’s best night by all means, and the O-line didn’t open too many holes against a stout Lion’s D-Line. But, all and all pass protection was pretty good, and the overall play of the offense…was passable.

Game ball; secondary. 4 ints for the second time this season, with 2 of them going for TDs. Major Wright looked rather improved to say the least. Conte should have had an int of his own. All and all, 9 (or is it 10?) ints in the last 3 games by the secondary, just outstanding by all accounts.

Not according to the Bears site.

EW wasn’t on the injury report and was suited up and played tonight, so he must mean that Omiyale is the only backup left with EW starting.

Or he’s just missing EW?

You hacve to look at it this way.

Chris williams sucked at tackle too. If we ignored his abilities inside because he sucked at tackle, we’d not be worried now about losing him to injury.

You have to look at where players succeed. Omiyale is a serviceable guard and a horrible tackle.

Yeah, but mostly because he played the entire season on a broken knee.

He had his lowest missed tackles total that year and the lowest yards after contact per carry of any qualifying back in the league. Meanwhile, the Bears had more line-yards per carry in 2009 than they’ve had in 2010 or 2011.

So his down sophomore season was more about injury than line. Not to mention that Cutler wasn’t sacked as much in 2009.

Truth is, Omiyale got a raw deal.

He’s been DMS’d in Chicago, and everyone blames him for trying to fill a need he’s not suited for because he was asked to and because Angelo is too stupid to actually fill the need himself.

Omiyale was once a promising guard, until Angelo decided that an ancient Orlando Pace was an adequate replacement for John Tait.

Just saying....

there’s a huge difference between playing tackle and playing guard. Omiyale is a guard who was moved outside because Angelo was too stupid to go out and get a tackle.

Honestly, I have no problem with Omiyale if they would just leave him on the chart as a guard and actually bring in a frickin tackle. I don’t understand Angelo’s aversion to tackles. We currently have two actual tackles on the roster, and one of them is injured.

Omiyale has always been listed as a guard on the Bears roster page.

According to Football outsiders....

The Bears had the most yards per carry behind the Left Guard in 2009.

Fact is, that in 2009, the line wasn’t Matt’s problem. Not being able to break a tackle or make anyone miss due to a knee injury was Matt’s problem. The bears were top 10 in the league in 2009 for adjusted line-yards (yards before a player gets hit the first time) and Forte was last in the league among qualifying backs in broken tackles and Yards after contact per carry.

It’s amazing what a knee injury does to a back.

I don’t think the Dline for the Bears in 06 was great. It was made by Harris (I know the same is of Pep) and they were gashed after he was out and by the weak Colts rush unit and I know this unit wouldn’t allow it. Would fully take Peppers and this line over the Super Bowl Bears line of 06.

Really, cause they were gashed by Detroit in the first game. Detroit, of all teams.

Not to mention that every team that Chicago has allowed 100 yards or more rushing in six of their nine games this season. They allowed 100 yard rushing games in only six of their 16 regular season games in 2006, and allowed only three after Tommie Harris was injured.

So I’m not sure how you know this unit wouldn’t allow it, considering that they’ve allowed it in 2/3 of their games.

The hundred yards in the DET was on one rush due to poor gap control by the LBs.

2006 after Tommie: 7 games, 190 rushes, 705 yards 3.7 yards per carry. (and this include the actual manhandling that the team took from Adrian Peterson for 190 yards. without AP gashing them, they only allowed 3.2 yards per carry in the other six games)

2011 first 9 games (WITH PEP!): 188 rushes 960 yards, 5.1 yards per carry.

Who’s getting manhandled by the run again?

This team doesn’t have a playoff game to compare. You’re not trying to tell me the playoffs are the same, are you?

By the way, in case you wanted to know, the Harris-less and Mike Brown-less ’06 Bears had 17 sacks in 7 games compared to the 18 sacks the ’11 Bears, with Pep, have in nine games.

I disagree.

But even if you include it…..you might want to consider that Indy ran a lot of yardage because they ran 42 times, lol. So…..

2006 including playoffs: 290 (yes, teams rushed against the Bears 100 times in the playoffs, lol) for 1079 yards (yep, only added 374 yards on 100 carries in the playoffs) for….wait for it……still 3.7 yards per carry.

And the Bears still allowed 5.1 yards per carry through 188 rushes for 960 yards in nine games.

Advantage 2006 Bears without Tommie Harris.

You have to include it in the context that we were talking about the SB team

the playoffs were a part of that team, not just the regular season and must include their play during the playoffs.

Indy also passed for over 230 yards in that game, over 400 total…

The Saints and Seahawks were also king on our D.

The sum total and average was low in the playoffs because the Saints didn’t rush….at all.

I would still take the 2011 current collective over the final ’06 D.

We were talking about which line was netter at stopping the run....

But if you really want the stats for the team including the passing game, sacks and rushing yardage, I’ll hash them out. But your still not going to like the end result.

But there’s also a reason that playoff stats aren’t counted among record stats. Because the quality of opponent changes and weighs teams differently. That’s why the record books don’t allow for playoff stats to be included with record stats except when they state that they are playoff records.

And the Saints rushed 27 times against the Bears. That’s not exactly “didn’t rush….at all”

The Seahawks rushed 31 times and the Colts rushed 42 times.

I thinnk the part you're missing here is that I didn't make the rules, my friend.

I think yardage and points are horrible ways to gauge individual players. For example, Wright was horrible in Minnesota and lost his starting spot for the next week. But the Bears gave up fewer than 286 yards.

And other than the deflected interception, Wright was pretty bad in Philly. And the Bears gave up 330 yards.

By contrast, Wright played a good game tonight and the Bears gave up 393 yards.

But I was working within the defined parameters given to me. I was more arguing that even in the flawed measure, it didn’t help Wright and Conte.

I don’t care if bears D gave up 500 yards, the film tells another story. They made stops when they needed to make stops, they forced turnovers and capitalized on interceptions, and they kept the lions offense from scoring major pounts. That’s what counts in my book.

ATL, CAR, PHI and DET are the four opponents while they have scored 29 versus the Vikes.

You can only compare his rookie season to this one. They’re the only two seasons that he was only brought in as a situational pass rusher. He’s only played 153 downs in his first eight games this year. That’s on pace with his 2006 season.

And in that case, he’s not performing to the level he performed here.

the defense was fantastic, the offense was effective if not spectacular. HUGE WIN as far as the standings go. The Bears have the inside track to the #5 seed. CW injury an issue, but not a huge worry. Just move Louis and Spencer to G and put Carimi back at RT…all set. Impressed with the dominance of the Bears and the schedule sets them up to be 12-4, 13-3 if they beat the Packers. I’m excited to see where the Bears can go with this.

Deion Sanders better start writing Hester's induction speech

He has deserved a spot there already. Might not be a first ballot, but he will most certainly retire with the non-offensive TD record (he’s one or two short) and become the first player to reach 20, a feat considering he only returns kickoffs and punts. The biggest issue with ST guys is how to measure their impact on the game, but Hester has regularly shortened the field and put points on the board. His contributions are not only measurable, but also memorable.

I see Moore getting fined because he did retaliate and yada yada yada…

How about Pettigrew going after Moore for the 2nd retaliation?

I think Stafford gets fined over this. Clearly a show of frustration because all he could see was orange.

Schwartz coaches his players to be dirty. He should be suspended just for being a pompous ass about the situation. Everyone knows the NFL reviews each game and just because you didn’t draw a flag, doesn’t mean you won’t draw a fine.

I just wish they fixed their unis or logo. Hue is the right man for the team. I think they are the one team that can beat the bears out of the west, more than the Chargers.

Obviously, the Defense and ST won this game. There wasn't a question.

The offense only scored about 16 points…but that still puts them ahead of the 13 the Lions managed. And I would not have expected only 64 yards from Forte. Especially against the “Wide 9” defense that He had already demolished the previous week against the Eagles. Cutler didn’t have a great day either, but (to quote many strange sports minds) he “managed” the game very well.

This isn't meant as a bashing post, Congrats on the win btw

But alot of people do think that the Lions are ‘dirty’. Yes, there were some questionable after-the-play hits by BOTH sides, it wasn’t just the Lions today. I’m not defending Suh, Fairley, or even Stafford to some point for what they did, but there were equally questionable hits by the Bears as well. The hits later in the game that forced Calvin Johnson out of the game (possible concussion, dunno full details) in the endzone where he got sandwiched, the fact that Moore retaliated the way he did against Stafford (I don’t blame him, but overdoing the reaction, and celebrating it afterwords, probably wasn’t the best). Your defense is good, but you shouldn’t be calling the Lions ‘dirty’ because of the actions that they did. Overall though, this was a VERY physical game, the turnovers that occurred early in the game really set the tone for the game. Congrats again on the win, and hope to see you guys in the playoffs for a rematch, we’ll settle the score. As for the rest of the regular season, I wish your team the best of luck!

Oh it did get chippy(I won't deny the Bears stuff), but it seemed that the unnecessary stuff started with the Lions.

Suh, Vanden Bosch and the others had unneeded hits that forced the Bears to react, we won’t be pushovers on that front.

I don’t think Megatron will be harmed, probably a tact to get him out of their and as a precaution.

Good luck the rest of the year and hope to play you again to settle it.

I know that people probably dont get the best impression when it comes to Schwartz

but he really has changed the mentality of this team. I know it may not be ‘for the best’, but for some of the best defenses of the past (Steelers of the ‘70s, Ravens in more recent times for example) and considering the history of being the NFLs ’doormats’ for decades, he’s just trying to instill an new attitude for this team. Some of the things they’ve said and done, I don’t agree with, and it is something that they do need to work on. Hopefully this game really opens up the eyes of the Lions coaching staff.

My personal feeling on it is....

… they’re trying to show an identity that the Lions will not be pushovers anymore and that they’re tired of being everyones punching bag. Yes, what they have done and did today was going overboard, and borderline ‘dirty’, and I don’t personally like it too much. Hopefully the coaches do something to change it, hopefully the NFL says something about it as well. It’s sad that Suh visited the NFL just last week asking about the things that he was getting fined and penalized for yet he did those exact things today. Perhaps he does need to learn a bit more

Though I have to admit, I don’t like any time a tackle is made using anything from the neck up.

All know how the Refs are told ‘to air on the side of caution’. Though of course they should’ve flagged Stafford as well for what he did to Moore as well. Both were questionable to say the least.

The Rulebook says otherwise...

I didn’t get to see the Peppers hit, but at least he was making a play on the ball.

Rule 12 Section 2 Article 8(h)

(h) any player who grabs a helmet opening of an opponent and forcibly twists, turns, or pulls his head

= Unnecessary roughness = 15 yards, and DQ worthy if flagrant.

Having not seen the play, as long as he’s going for the ball carrier I’d call it a 15yarder but throwing a dude down by the inside of his helmet because you’re mad, completely away from the play = flagrant IMO.

by Jacob Hayes on Nov 14, 2011 12:05 AM CST up reply actions

He was making a play on the ball,

but it almost seemed like a byproduct of a clothesline. Peppers pretty much had his head wrapped from the front of the neck around.

If they don’t call that, I don’t think they can call Stafford’s.

Actually it doesn't look bad.

Peppers looks as though he wrapped the shoulders of Calvin and Calvin simply fell back due to lack of leverage, also, Johnson was making a football move so it is hard to call something.

Stafford purposely grabbed Dj by the helmet, held on for five yards and threw him down.

BIG difference.

Trying to find a picture of moment of impact, it's not working...

Cause the one I found shows the arm coming over the right shoulder, down across to the left shoulder, but a bit after initial contact when Johnson’s already started falling and the ball’s well out.

I'm not saying you couldn't call Peppers...

But it’s a tougher call to make due to it actually being a play on a ball carrier. It’s a tough angle, but it appears that Stafford not only has him inside the front of the helmet, but also got his fingers in on the back of the helmet as well.

It was also well away from a play that was basically already over. I mean, you watch Peppers hit and even with admitted bias you can go that was a viciously rough hit on the ball carrier, he should be flagged, but it’s hard to call it flagrant. It’s hard NOT to call Stafford’s throw anything else but flagrant.

by Jacob Hayes on Nov 14, 2011 12:17 AM CST up reply actions

Peppers didnt have his helmet. It was more of a clothesline...

And DJ Moore didnt have the ball. You cant just tackle people for the hell of it. Especially by the head.
