Some were upset that the Bears offense, in particular the play calling of Mike Martz, wasn’t more effective. To those people I say, get a clue.

but,but...Martz must be denounced for the villainous dinosaur he is!

Thanks wilt

I was arguing this at the game on Sunday. Martz’ job after going up 20-0 is to not turn it over, play filed position, and time off the clock as fast as possible.

Nice Article

I especially liked the point about Martz not showing his hand. There are 2 times (not) to do this, during preseason and during a rout. I really don’t understand fans who can’t just say, “Good work Bears” and enjoy a victory.

The other factor to consider in minimizing the offense is to finish the game with minimal injuries. I know losing Chris Williams was bad, but at least the coaching staff had the sense to take Forte out early and reduce Cutler’s role to handing off the ball.

Martz hasn't been too bad in recent games.

The things that have bothered me most about his play calling are the HB option plays and other weird wildcat stuff/end arounds that don’t seem to work very often. These aren’t fireable offenses by any means though.

Unimaginative play calling.

I wasn’t able to watch on tv, the game not shown locally. But, I can’t help but get the feeling the the Bears ran on 1st down 90+ percent of the time. And, screens seem to be a play of the past.

The Bears had a 20 - 0 lead before the Lions could even get out of the locker room

so all Martz had to do was run out the clock and not turn the ball over the whole game

Hold on a second here

You tell critics to get a clue, but then you end with this.

I would have loved to see Martz attack down field with some play action passes, but running it up isn’t Lovie Smith’s style.

Seems kind of like you agreed with them; to an extent at least.

My problem is Martz went conservative very early on. Obviously I can’t complain about the outcome, but this offense is still a work in progress and needs more time to improve. Calling a vanilla offense sets the unit back a little.

It's like the old political adage

When your opponent is putting his foot in his mouth, don’t say anything. Likewise, when the opposing offense is giving up 6 turnovers. Keep your offense out of the way. There wasn’t really any reason at any point past the first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter to get our offense involved in any part of the game except for the the game of “keepaway”.

And no, our offensive unit was not set back even a little because of it. They all were very much aware that the defense and special teams had completely taken over the game. It was a good adjustment by Martz to tone it down and win the game.

by Corncob Justice on Nov 16, 2011 1:29 AM CST up reply actions

Sure

The game was won early, but they can’t rely on poor offensive production when playing the elite teams. The defense and STS taking over is exactly what I fear come playoffs. Jay and the passing game need to be “on” their game to beat the best.

I would have liked have to seen the Bears step on their throats.

Give the Lions a good old fashioned behind the woodshed ass kicking… because I’ve grown to despise their dirty cheap shotting ways and their coach is a grade A d-bag. Not to mention many of their fans needed to be brought down a notch or two. But, that wasn’t the smart thing to do.

The smart thing to do was exactly what they did.

i think some people have forgotten the lions early season comebacks

The Vikings and cowboys are wishing they would have taken the Bears approach after losing big leads in the 2nd half vs Detroit. There was no need to do any more than what was done on offense. Period. What would b the purpose? Smart playcalling with the lead and we got the win.can’t ask for much more than that

The difference is

The Vikes and Boys D weren’t or aren’t as good as the Bears D. Good approach on offense in the short term, but not conducive for long term success versus better teams.

i dnt think u can gain much long term from doin something in a blowout

So a play action pass works when ur up 20….is it good execution or a defense entirely keyed on tha run because ur up 3 scores? There isn’t a scenario where the offense benefits in that situation other than successfully running the ball when the defense is expecting it. To b honest, short term success is all that matters on the midst of a blowout win.

The idea is to try

Completely blow them out with better offense. Like I said below, the team can’t count on the defense and special teams to win games against better teams with great offenses.

Go for the throat mentality.

I would have preferred Td's instead of Fg's off the turnovers but

There comes a point when you play to what’s working and it’s different game to game. In this game it was protect the lead and get out with a win. The next game might be different. Had the Bears started going for the throat and turned the ball over it would be they shoulda just ran the ball and kept the lead. Damned if you do damned if you dont.

Long-term success?

I’d say learning how to finish a game with a big lead is good for long-term success. That’s nothing to take for granted.

by NorthSideBearsFan on Nov 16, 2011 7:43 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly what I mean

The team can’t count on four INTs to help close a game out. If they have a big lead early versus the Saints or Packers, they come back if the offense doesn’t put up more points.

one thing that bothered me was martz getting cute early

Forte throwing the ball? What?? Other than that, when your defense is doing all (most) of the work, all the offense has to do is run the clock. Though there were a few 3 and outs I didn’t like.

May the Oline hold, May Cutler not get sacked into oblivion, may Urlacher break some legs, and may they come to their senses and pay Forte. AMEN.

by Jessica312 on Nov 16, 2011 6:33 AM CST via mobile reply actions

I'm actually ok with Forte tossing the ball every once in a while.

As long as the only two outcomes are an incomplete pass or a huge gain, that is. That he had the smarts to toss it out of bounds when the primary option was covered shows that he knew what was expected of him. Plus, defensive backs may hesitate for a split second on run support if there is a receiver in the vicinity, opening the possibility for a bigger gain on runs.

It’s just something else that defenses have to be prepared for, and the more things they worry about, the less they can key in on one.

That was the perfect time to try that play

near midfield, early in the game… You show that play every so often and then opposing defenses have to be wary of it. You may get a safety staying back a little longer on those outside runs by Forte because he has to play the pass, then when Forte turns it up field he has one less defender at the point of attack.

Ravens ran the same play and it ended in a touchdown

Had the Bears gotten a TD off of it it would’ve been genius play calling

People forget Walter Payton used to run that same play all the time, except he threw INTS

Yep, knew Payton used to do that - touchdown pass to Mcmahon rings a bell, I think?

I have no problem with the play itself. I just don’t think that early in a must-win game is the time for it, especially since with Forte we haven’t had a whole lot of success with similar plays. It just seemed a tad risky to me. JMO

that's the perfect time for it

Mid field, up 7-0, it was like 1st or 2nd down. There’s no better time to call a trick play. the Lions were keying on forte in the run game so Martz had to call a play that could possibly get the safetys to think twice before darting in against the run.
