According to a Twitter report from Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic, Martz is interested in filling the vacancy created by the firing Monday of Sun Devils coach Dennis Erickson.

SMD has some great thoughts on this:
If this happens, who would the Bears have take over OC job? I think they would have to promote within the regime, which mean I could see Tice running the offense, because he could get away with running basically the same offense.

As long as Martz leaves his playbook behind, I'd be quite happy with this arrangement.

I’ve long thought that a good offensive philosophy needs both Dreamer and Realist in some form or another. Martz, to me, is the Dreamer. Tice, to me, is the Realist. I would have LOVED to have seen what would happen if Martz designed the plays and Tice called them. I just wish the opportunity didn’t come with Martz’s departure…

I got another replacment idea ....

….. Norv Turner . When the man can just focus on offense hes been pretty darn good . But lets be honest here if Martz leaves its gonna put somewhat of a kink in our offensive development . So if he goes we need a proven OC to replace him .

Just 1 problem

Will he accept a demotion? At least 3 teams come to mind for new HC jobs: Jags, ’Phins, and Colts.

why would the front office even let him try at Miami or Jacksonville

Both teams are aiming to improve on offense

Most likely both teams will be seeking an offensive minded HC. Jacksonville, in particular, has already made statements claiming their primary focus will be improving on the offensive side of the ball. And what is Norv Turner known for around the league? Offense.

Its a perfect storm in a way pointing to Norv Turner becoming the next HC of the Jags.

No team is gonna take Norv as a Head Coach in my opinion . Why ? Well thats ....

…. easy , he has one of the most talented rosters ( both offensive & defensive wise ) in the entire NFL and never got them over the hump . As an OC hes money .

by MidWayMonster54 on Nov 29, 2011 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

Here is my counter-arguement

Yes he always has had a ton of talent, and he has never had success in the playoffs. But, if there is a team that has an extremely good defense such as the Jags, and are seeking for a far better offense, then who else would you call if Norv Turner?

Another strange fact, it never has mattered who the HC was in San Diego, they have never had success with their current GM. Their GM deserves his fair share of the blame.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Agreed on the GM front to a certain extent . You can't really bag ...

… on dude too much though considering some of the players he drafted ( Rivers , Jackson , LT , Merriman & numerous others ) .

The Jags issues are more player related and talent related than coaching related in my opinion . They need better players period . There arn’t too many coaches that can get a limited talent team to play above their talent level . Norv would not fit what that team really needs , but thats just my opinion .

jay won't have to learn a new offense then

he was playing great before the injury and they were starting to call plays that were more suited to his strengths (moving pocket, rolling out) that he ran so well in DEN

by walterfan34 on Nov 29, 2011 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

Here is another thought into this equation

Jay Cutler has already made his mark on the offense, so perhaps the offense will be similar to what Tice opperated but will be a unique playbook made between both Tice and Cutler. Tice, after all, does not have a playbook of his own just yet.

When is Tom Clements contract up? I know it wouldn’t be ideal but an offense more in tune with what Green Bay is doing is way more conducive to Jay Cutler’s strengths than what we have going on now.

by Soldier Field Was Ruined on Nov 29, 2011 3:03 PM CST reply actions

I was just about to post this!

Anyway I’m thinking the primary candidate for the next Bears OC will be Mike Tice given that he was Jerry Angelo’s first choice until Lovie Smith convinced him to bring Martz on board. I’ll be looking through the archives of the Tribune because I know of an article describing Tice’s interest in becoming an OC.

But, if Norv Turner does indeed get fired as the HC of the Chargers, I’d love to see him as the OC. Problem is, I don’t feel he will settle for just an OC job given at least 3 teams will be searching for new HCs (Jags already have fired Del Rio, Colts and ‘Phins likely). Other candidates could include the Packers’ receivers coach and/or their QB coach, Jeremy Bates if he returns to the NFL given his prior experiance with Cutler, or really any of the assistants to Norv Turner.

He has been a member of some pretty prolific offenses over the years. The Vikes offense of the late ‘90s-early 2000s comes to mind. He also has had a hand in the offensive playcalling in Chicago with imputs of his own, so he should have a rather fair understanding of Martz’s playbook.

True but

Martz has a history with the program. He was a coach there back in the ’80s. That could be significant or not. That could be totally insignificant (because what are the odds any of the same people are even remotely tied to the football program that were in the ’80s) or it could be something (He has experience at the university and is familiar with the program and culture)

if this panned out, I'd actually go to a Sun Devil game.

But as a Bears fan, I am concerned about the transition for Jay and the offense… having an excellent back like Forte should give us a more lenient learning curve, but our division isn’t going to wait for us to catch up if we fall behind…

I hope he stays.

Unless of course we could lure Shoop back.

shoop is still at UNC

and I wish him to leave UNC, but not for the bears. god no. he’s still as horrible at UNC as he was with the bears.

we’ll have to wait and see how stuff pans out once the playoffs/ offseason starts.

The sooner Martz leaves the better

his playcalling and run-pass ratio is awful for the Bears. He was never a good fit for the team to begin with. He needs to go. Now.

Really ? How many losing seasons have we had with Martz as OC ?

you must understand, the foward pass should not be allowed

Bears made it to the NFCC because of the Defense

not because of Martz, Jay was playing okay in spurts and Forte was getting better- in fact, we lost a number of games like the NFCC because of Martz’ play calling.

OK how many games have we won / lost with Martz as OC ?

Go ahead and list out all the games we lost because of Martz

Man, if only the world was as black and white as Bears fans wanted it to be…

it'd be nice

to have an offense where jay can audible

by TR MacReady on Nov 30, 2011 7:27 AM CST reply actions

Well it appears he would be a long-shot to receive the job

But it may present a picture where the Bears decide to move forward without Martz unless he comes to terms with a new contract as the OC in the offseason.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Nov 30, 2011 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

Well, at least it sounds like he could leave the playbook with Tice and they could still run the same basic stuff

So Cutler won’t have to learn anything new. Same stuff, just a different guy calling the plays.
