I understand the Bears just dropped a game in an excruciating fashion, and as a competitive athlete he didn’t have time to come down after the loss, but calling the QB a good running back is kind of a d*** thing to say.

Call em like you see em?

It may not have been the nicest thing to say, but after watching some of the ducks Tebow threw it’s obvious that his greatest strength / threat is his mobility.

I don't have a problem with what Urlacher said

You can spin it any way you want, but Tebow has been the beneficiary of:

- luck
- a good defense(Denver’s)
- stupid mistakes by opponents(see Marion Barber)

…and he has shown he is a good option QB aka a running back. Tebow has not earned the stripes to avoid being called anything more than a running back at this point in his career, especially by a future hall of famer. He may prove everyohe wrong over time, or he may well get his bell rung enough times, but that hasn’t happened yet, ergo no prob with what Urlacher said.

His qb rating is 83.9%, just behind Cutler's 85.7%.

I think we would all agree this is Cutler’s best year for the Bears? So we call Cutler a franchise QB and praise his every move but Tebow is a joke? Also, the QB rating is based on passing stats only. When you factor in the running ability he brings, I’d argue Tebow is a better qb right now than Cutler.

by mick11 on Dec 15, 2011 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah Tebow is better

At overthrowing guys at the 1st 3 quarters by ten yards. He was horrible and every game this season he played was like that…Play like piss for 50 minutes, defense plays soft then he completes passes. Tebow isnt even close to Jay

Sometimes, overthrowing someone by 10 yards is what qb's are coached.

Have you seen his td/int ratio? I’ve seen him put the ball right on the receiver’s hands quite a feew times too when they were dropped. The guy is a winner.

by mick11 on Dec 15, 2011 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

But still arguably better than Jay?

The same guy that had only 2 completions against KC? Im going with my eyes and for most of that game he was dominated, looked lost, and then Bears D played that conservative prevent crap and got away with what has been stopping him… And all of a sudden completing the short dink and dunk passes that any require little difficulty to make because of the soft D and Zack Bowman’s useless hide…Not because Tebow is probably the best thing since sliced bread, he deserves credit for not screwing up. So imho he’s not, nowhere near as good as Jay Cutler. I can’t dismiss someone who plays like lion crap for 3 quarters and then looks decent in the 4th and then unexpected, inexplicable crap like Barber running out of bounds or the fumble giving them chances.

Ps. I don’t hate Tebow seems like a cool guy…I just hate the hype like he’s the chosen one like he’s the next elite guy yet he’s nowhere near him, good football player sure, but good QB or passer absolutley not

If you're going to cherry-pick stats, then QB rating might be one of the worst to do it with

Furthermore, you’re not even stating the stat correctly. It isn’t measured as a percent (83.9%).

Beyond that, you’re just dead wrong that Tebow is a better QB than Cutler. The ONLY reason that Tebow MAY be considered a better QB at THIS particular moment is because Jay has a broken thumb on his throwing hand and isn’t playing.

Most folks, in judging a QB, would look at things like completion percentage (TT: 48.6% this year, 49% career; JC 58% this year, 61.1% career), yards per attempt (TT 6.7 this year, 7.1 career; JC 7.4 this year, 7.3 career) and yards per game (TT 124 this year, 102 career; JC 232 this year, 234 career). It’s quite clear that Jay is a far better QB to anyone who either used the eyeball test or advanced statistics. It seems you’re caught somewhere in the middle. (As a side note, Tebow’s completion percentage and average yards passing per game are both currently ranked #32 in the NFL on NFL.com.)

In my opinion, I’d hazard to guess that one reason Tebow throws so few INTs is that he is so inaccurate. He’s completed less than 50% of his attempts for his career. And his per game passing average is pretty much spot-on, as he as very few yards passing (less than 100) off the bench.

In fact, during his entire career Tebow has only started ONE GAME where he has a completion percentage higher than Jay Cutler’s career average. Tebow completed 10 of 15 passes against Minnesota this season – and Minnesota sucks. That’s it.

Per the rushing numbers that you think put Tebow over the top, the add up to 51 yards per game this season. That means that in total yardage passing and rushing Tebow is still 57 yards behind Jay Cutler’s passing-only numbers per game. Meanwhile, Jay did manage to lumber his way to an average of 200 yards rushing per season between 2007-2011, so he’s far from immobile, even though he cut down his runs significantly this season (and rightfully so, because he can actually throw passes accurately).

And this isn’t, in fact, Cutler’s best year for the Bears, to which you suppose that we would all agree. Last season he completed a higher percentage of passes (60.4%) for more yards per attempt (7.6), as well has having a higher TD%, even though he had slightly fewer yards per game and higher INT . I think at this point it’s a stretch to think that Tebow will ever approach 60 completions for over 7.5 yards per attempt at anywhere near the volume of passes that an average starting QB throws, let alone Jay’s numbers for the pass-happy Denver Broncos franchise that Tebow now plays for.

My father and older brothers explained to me very succinctly, decades ago, why teams don’t run the option in the NFL: because QBs will eventually get killed. It’s why Mike Vick never won a Super Bowl and has since become a pocket passer. Tebow simply can’t consistently outrun the likes of Urlacher and Peppers, and sooner or later a guy like Suh will take his head off on a clean play, let alone a late hit. Tebow has already fumbled 10 times in 9 starts, though he’s only lost 4 of them, and that compares to an average 15-16 game season for Jay.

Even if your argument only takes into account winning football games, Tim Tebow has 7 wins as a starting QB this season, and 8 for his career. In relatively the same timeframe, since the bye week last season, Jay Cutler is 15-6 (including playoffs), with losses only to the Super Bowl Champ Packers (3x), Patriots, Saints in the Superdome, and Lions in Ford Field, and he was riding a 5-game winning streak when he was injured.

In summation, you could argue that Tebow is a better QB right now than Cutler. But unless you’re argument depends on Jay sitting on the bench with a broken thumb, it’s very unlikely that you would come out on top in your argument to any impartial audience.

by Sweetness Lives On on Dec 20, 2011 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

And for the record, I have no problem with what Urlacher said

I mean, look at the numbers: less than 50% of his passes completed for his career, and over 600 yards rushing in 9 starts this season. What do you suppose Tebow’s completion percentages are by quarter, i.e. comparing him facing standard v prevent defenses? If Tebow lined up as a RB, do we doubt he’d run for 1,000 yards for the season?

Tim Tebow is who we thought he is, an option QB and/or glorified RB. At this point he as a lot of work to do in order to become a guy who can complete 21 of 35 passes for 260 yards and 2 TDs in several consecutive games, let alone averaging that for an entire season.

by Sweetness Lives On on Dec 20, 2011 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

Meh

So he said something that lots of people already think about Tebow. Vintage Urlacher…No biggie

Do we actually know

whether or not he was being totally serious? He’s been known to be quite the joker. Not sure if it pertains here, because his team came off a brutally disappointing loss.

Either way, he’s not too far off with this statement. He was 3-16 or something before the Bears defense decided to drop deep. Shut down for 57 minutes.

I thought it was funny

I saw the interview and he said it in such a casual, light-hearted way that it seemed like a friendly jab instead of a genuine attempt to insult Tebow.

I can't believe all this animosity towards Urlacher

Nobody’s in the best of moods right after a loss, and it was an honest and true assessment. I can’t believe there’s so many people out there, that really believes this guy is a legitimate NFL quarterback.

by Big Ike on Dec 15, 2011 8:48 AM CST up reply actions

Urlacher doesn't have to be polite!

Urlacher has earned the right to objectively say what he and everyone else saw.
Tebow hasn’t earned the right to be a starting QB in the NFL and I’m sure that rubs the veteran old-school players the wrong way

Urlacher would have been better served in his comments if Tebow beat them on the ground vs. through the air.

I love Urlacher as a football player, but he’s pretty classless.

Tebow on the other hand, is the definition of classy.

This is a perfect example of giving someone a pass because he's on your hometown team.

If someone asked Tebow what he thought of Brian’s play and came up with “he runs well for an old guy”, everyone on this site would have been up in arms about how disrespectful he would have been.

It’s the reverse reaction from 18 months ago when Urlacher was coming back from his wrist injury and Gale Sayers questioned whether he would be able to come back 100%. He never said that he couldn’t or wouldn’t, he just answered a question about the state of the Bears at that point and listed that fact as an area of concern. Brian chose to be offended and responded with “how many championships has Gale Sayers ever won?” The answer, the same number as Urlacher.

I agree totally with Lester regarding Brian. He’s one of my favorited all-time Bears and I go back to the days of Ed O’Bradovich and Ronnie Bull, but this was a stupid thing to say. I love my kids, too but when they do something dumb, it doesn’t become justifiable just because they’re my kids.

by BearFan611 on Dec 15, 2011 6:36 AM CST reply actions

Kind of agree

Not that his comment was without merit, but I think it was a bit of a low blow in the heat of the moment. Still love Brian though, one thing is that he always speaks his mind, and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. But on occasion he can be a bit hotheaded.

As for Tebow… you know, yeah, he’s got an unconventional method of playing the QB position. He’s overrated, and he really IS more of a running back than a starting QB. And of course he can be annoying (Gators loss crying meltdown, yeesh). But at the same time, I find it hard to hate on the guy, mainly because he’s just so NICE. What was his response to Brian’s comment? He took it as a compliment coming from such a great player. I mean, REALLY! Sometimes hating on that guy almost feels like kicking a puppy, ya know?

so to diss him like he did, and if you think it wasn’t a diss, you are not paying attention, makes Urlacher look foolish and petty.

Urlacher meant that as a joke I think not a serious jab

I agree with everyone who doesnt see the harm in it but I also heard the interview. Maybe this is a case where if you didn’t hear Urlacher say it you might not pickup that Urlacher was kinda kidding, often humor like irony and sarcasm dont come through as clearly when reading text, much easier when someone is saying it.
