Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

2011 Week 16: Bears at Packers Open Thread

Ways to not beat the Packers:

1. Let them complete whatever they feel like.
2. Leave points on the board.
3. Throw interceptions.
4. Let Aaron Rodgers chump your linebackers on a scramble.
5. Let them complete whatever they feel like, including that back shoulder pass that we've been watching him throw ALL SEASON LONG.

I put that last one in there for emphasis.

I'm thinking even with Cutler

and even with how well they played against Denver and KC a few weeks ago, this D would not have gotten us very far in the playoffs.

And yes, I know it’s Aaron Rodgers – but you gotta play QBs like Rodgers and Brees in the playoffs sometime. Our D is getting old, folks … they kept us in the playoff run longer than we deserved, but this is not going to be a D we can depend on next year, methinks

They are on the field too much

If our offense had actually shown up the defense would actually get to rest like a real team and the results might be completely different. Who knows about next year but to blame the defense for any of this is wrong

I thought that too

and that explains it some of the time, but that can’t explain the TDs tonight. Usually, that’s the case. But the TD’s tonight, and the way that Tavaris fucking Jackson went down the field on us last week right after half, that’s not exhaustion. That’s soft zone sucktitude

We're good at containing mobile QBs who can't throw

scheme and execution is usually pretty good. But pocket passers that we don’t get shit for pressure on – they rip us to shreds almost every time.

I disagree.

The defense has given up 35 points. They are absolutely to blame for that.

Remember that the Bears still have the TOP lead, so what’s the excuse again?

The defense is allowing TDs to fast for them to be on the field to long.

by iowaBear on Dec 25, 2011 9:55 PM CST reply actions

I'm rather impressed

One INT wasn’t his fault… badly thrown, but tipped.

The first INT was a bad throw, but 9 times out of 10, the LB does not have the body balance to stop himself and get his hands up and make that catch.

McCown has been fairly OK tonight, and he definitely uses his feet much better than Hanie could even dream of.

you’d be saying they were stupid for pulling Hanie. Two-sided coin.

by Virto on Dec 25, 2011 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but we're talking about what's actually happening

All we needed was a professional QB to not lose against bad teams. Hanie probably won’t be in the league this year. Every Bears fan should be pissed as hell that the coaches let a non NFL QB tank a season. This is bs

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Dec 25, 2011 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

but he is already in the league this year.. o.O

by GtM on Dec 25, 2011 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

I keep hearing this

When I bring up the fact that Lovie waited too long.

And at least for me, it is not the case. I was ready for Lovie to dump Hanie after the first start.

Todd Collins would have been an improvement over Hanie.

That was probably the worst 4 start stretch possible by a QB.

I’d rather my coach go down with a sinking ship while trying to bail it out and DO SOMETHING than to sit there and watch what’s failing continue to fail.

“Two-sided coin”… simply not true.

by dm1982 on Dec 25, 2011 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

but I’m sorry on the ‘only one team can play up here in GB in this weather and beat them’ canard:

(2) New Orleans, yes, is a warm weather team – but they are REALLY f’ing on-point this year. The ‘weather’ can only contain them so much

It's sad that during this 5 game stretch

- The running game didn’t suffer any setbacks in its ability to move the chains.
- The defense had 2 absolutely outstanding games, allowing 10 points in regulation in both.
- We found out there’s a QB on the roster that can go 18/25 for nearly 300 yards, use his feet to make plays and complete passes on 3rd down.

Aaaaaand, yet we’re 0-5 in that stretch.

Just 2 wins out of those 5 games… just 2… and we’d only need a win against the Vikings and the inevitable Falcons loss to the Saints tomorrow. Just 1 win, and we’d only need that loss plus a loss against Tampa Bay.

McCown really wants to return to the NFL next season

If he repeats this performance against the Vikings, even if he doesn’t stick around, he should get a couple of calls. Some good passes, distributing the ball, cool in the chi-pocket and scrambling like a mad bastard. And he made Roy Toy look a decent receiver.

by lmfsilva on Dec 25, 2011 10:22 PM CST reply actions

I'll wait until next week

But I’m happy with his performance tonight. 19/28 for 242, 1TD for 2INT and 8 for 28 on the ground is quite good for a 32-year old journeyman who spent the last months coaching kids.

by lmfsilva on Dec 25, 2011 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

But if he does get the start next week (knowing Lovie, there will be no way Enderle even comes close to stepping on the field) and does well, he should be one of the first considered for a job holding Cutler’s clipboard next season.
