Breaking: Bears release Tommie Harris and two others
The Chicago Bears have announced the release of three players - DT Tommie Harris, LB Hunter Hillenmeyer, and OT Kevin Shaffer. GM Jerry Angelo said last week the team would start making roster decisions this week, and this is the first.
Recently, we pondered what the team would choose to do with Harris, considering his performance over the last three seasons, and they have decided his late-season surge was not good enough. This decision will undoubtedly have the team looking even harder at potentially drafting a defensive tackle in the first round of this year's Draft.
More information as it is available.

Wow!
I don’t know if I’m surprised but didn’t expect all three, all at once, right now.
"More cowbell" - Bruce Dickinson; "More bell cow" - Lovie Smith
eh, it's fair
If they want a chance to sign with another team by Thursday, this gives the players some time to explore offers.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Kinda of surprised they didn't try to get anything for him if possible.

Can't trade him
No player trades allowed until a new cba is reached and it’s unlikely that will happen before he was due his 2.5 mil roster bonus.

best to do it quick
i like this move, but it’s unfortunate that T Harris could not come back to his old self after the injuries.
"Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and f**k the prom queen."
Harris was... unexpected, but not exactly undeserving.
I guess they’re concerned about Hunter’s concussion history. It’ll be interesting to see if he retires. If so, what a bad way to have to leave the league.
Shaffer, I don’t mind. Couldn’t get anything for him even if they tried, and couldn’t get on the field.

Could've been worse
had they invested Haynesworth type money. Still too bad he couldn’t get his head out of his @ss.
Too bad
But he hadn’t produced, Shaffer is kind of a surprise, he seemed to be decent depth at the least, but maybe now if we draft another OT (which seems like a real possibility) Williams becomes our all around backup at all positions except C. Hillenmeyer should probably retire from the concussions he’s sustained. Wish them all the best

We got the same amount of production from Shaffer
as we did JSC. Funny, St. Clair was just released a couple weeks ago too.
Think we'll swap again...
he can play guard and tackle….(I kid I kid)

Or I’m a really sarcastic SOB and Dane has always hated on Shaffer. You pick.

Well this doesn't really surprise me
But I don’t want to correct something.
This decision will undoubtedly have the team looking even harder at potentially drafting a defensive tackle in the first round of this year’s Draft.
Take out “looking even harder at potentially” and replace with “will certainly be”
Mark it down. We will take a DT in the first round.
Jay Cutler is still my quarterback.

Veteran Re-Signings is why I never got stuck on "need" for the draft
There are so many areas that could use a boost of depth and/or talent along with the number of FAs on this team…
… That fans pigeon-holing their thoughts and wishes on a OT or a WR are going to be disappointed if they don’t get a backup QB or a CB or— now— a DT.
I am still of the mindset that whatever is the BEST PLAYER on the draft board at the Bears pick, that they pick him. He’s going to fill a need or create enough competition to supercede a 2010 starter.

"BRING GERALD HARRIS BACK TO THE UFC!!!"
I agree
Take the most talented player regardless of position. The bears actually seem to do this most of the time, unfortunately it’s in the 3rd round or lower because we trade down so much (or trade them away).

Then something went badly wrong with the talent evaluation two drafts ago, seeing as how neither of our 3rd round picks remain on the roster.

Trading down in hte first round
usually creates better value. The ideal talent to cost ratio is at the beginning of the second round

In the 1st round the "best athlete" on the board approach works
past the first round you have to fill specific positional needs. I agree that this almost seals a DT as our 1st assuming a blue chipp DT is available.

Freeing up money to go after Rice! Sweet!
Seriously though, I’m kind of surprised by this. Always been a fan of Harris’ and Hillenmeyer’s. Unfortunate Harris couldn’t get back to his dominant self but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Good luck to all in the future.

Sad to lose Hunter and Shaffer, and disappointed with Harris’ last years here, but good to see the team moving on and being ready to explore other options (i.e. draft 3 DT’s and get a 7th rd OT).
If its free, take two.

I’m a little disappointed to Hunter go. I think he could’ve done back-up duty at a reasonable rate next season. He might get re-signed, but this looks like the beginning of the youth movement in Chicago.

good moves
all together 2 million to harris 1.8 to hillenmeyer and 2 million to shaffer.. 6 .8 million saved NOW GO AND DO SOMETHING SMART WITH IT
Davin Joseph and Ryan Harris anyone? Or how about Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks.....
either scenario solves the guard and right tackle positions or both guard positions. That leaves draft picks for a LT, C, DT, CB and WR.

Harris...
Was reportedly worth “$11.115 million in cap money” because of bonuses and the like as well. He wouldn’t have seen that, but its a nice cap clearing move going forward with the unknowns about the new CBA.

I hope
this means Hillenmayer has decided to keep playing. If he was really going to retire, it is a very dickish move on a player that has been a class act for as long as I can remember, and is one of those guys that seems pretty capable of seeing both ends of the CBA discussion.
Tommie… heh. He’s a bit like Haynesworth (only with less baggage) – love his ability, hate his effort, or lack there of.
Gonna miss Harris
Loved his talent, it’s a shame he decided to show less and less effort these past few seasons.
This only means that a big move is going to be made in the very near future
This frees up an additional 9+ million dollars to spend on perhaps a pair of big names. Now, the question is…who?

Bye bye Tommie see you at the car wash in a few years. Extra juice on the leather please.
Hopefully they will use this cash to bring in someone who wants to play. How does Rice and Asomugha sound? Or deal Olsen and our 1st to move up and grab Shockey to fill in for Olsen and get one of these real live DTs coming out in the top ten picks? Then I would be ok with a DT pick in the first round. I would love that money spent on Atogwe and Nicks
There are a ton of good Corners in this years draft and we now need to sign a good player to start in place of Manning, who just turned down a contract offer. Major Wright could be that guy down the road, yet to pass on a player as talented as Atogwe that has played at a stellar level in a scheme that was extreamly similar to our scheme, and Asomugha has not had that benifit.
Now having Sidney Rice would be a nice pick up, he would add that missing element to our WR corps, size and physicallity, so long as he stays healthy. When Brett Favre played well, Sidney Rice was spot on. Jay Cutler is in a way identical to Brett Favre, so the transition between QBs is seemless.

My Dog
Tommie is the reason im a pot smokin clown…….no wait. Seriously tho he will always be my guy. You know like parcels got his guys and Madden got his guys. Tommie is one of my guys
Hunter is the classiest football player I think I've ever seen.
Here’s what he said in a letter to the Trib:
I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Bears organization. I do not leave this franchise bitter or feeling slighted by anyone in the building. In truth, I’ve known this day was coming since I landed on IR back in September. In that conversation with Lovie (Smith), he acknowledged that having been made aware of my history, and the number of concussions I had sustained on his watch, that he could not be a part of forcing me back out on the field.
While at the time I was frustrated with such an abrupt end to my season, I have sought out and continue to seek the medical opinions of the best doctors in country as it relates to brain health and concussions. I am yet to find one that thinks it is a good idea to continue playing football. In hindsight, that makes me grateful that Lovie cared enough about me specifically, but really any player, to take that decision away as it pertains to a medical issue.
Barring some unforeseen turn of events, I don’t think there was a set of circumstances where I would have been cleared to play next season anyway. The more we pull back the curtain on the long-term effects of head injury, the scarier it gets for players in my position, who have multiple diagnosed concussions and countless more ‘dings’ and headaches. On one hand, I feel lucky to have been relatively candid about my symptoms compared to some colleagues who do everything they can to conceal their struggles. I can only thank the Bears organization, from the trainers and the doctors up to Lovie and Jerry (Angelo), for trying to be proactive in the way concussions are handled. On the other hand, any player who tells you they aren’t affected by the tragic stories like Dave Duerson’s, that seem to be popping up all too often, are lying.
I’d like to thank coach (Bob) Babich, my linebacker coach for most of my eight years here, for playing as integral a role as anyone in my development as a player. It’s been an honor to play for such a professional staff and with such outstanding teammates. We had a very special group in our linebacker room. While I was always like Ringo of the Beatles, next to such a talented pair, I think we have had the best and deepest linebacking corps in the NFL for a long time. As long as Lance (Briggs) and Brian (Urlacher) are out there together, expect the Bear’s defense to remain elite.
While I won’t be filing any retirement papers tomorrow, if I’ve played my last football game, I’m glad it was with the Bears. Even though I was drafted elsewhere, I have absolutely loved my time as Bear. I love the city, I love the culture; the fans here make it especially easy to feel very at home in Chicago. I think guys like me who spend all of their career here don’t realize how good they’ve got it. It’s been a great ride nonetheless.
It was great having you with us, Hunter. Please, when you eventually decide to continue with the game of football in a coaching capacity, remember the team you played the bulk of your career for. I would LOVE to see you prowling the sidelines of Soldier Field with a new crop of ProBowl Bears Linebackers.

Thanks for the post...
I was sad to see Hunter let go but I understand the reasoning. I truly believe all players should have the kind of attitude and respect for the game and their organization that Hunter does. In this day of age, it is refreshing to see such a humble and great attitude.
While I am sure that he would like to continue playing, I hope he retires for his health, family and to keep Chicago as your final home.
It is letters like this that make me happy to be a Chicago Bears fan. You can see the appreciation of the players for their team, city and fans, which is missing from far too many orgainizations.
