"Any Given Sunday" = Chemistry & Deception

The old adage of "Any Given Sunday" holds true after countless years of professional and collegiate football. Yet with all the discussions here about what Chicago should draft first and what to do in FA, I would like to dedicate this first FanPost of mine to an angle that deserves more consideration.

Everyone remembers Kahlil Bell's 72 yard rush here that has yet to be repeated. Enough that one DB was out of position, one OL gave the extra effort to block up field, and you got a 72 yard rush. On the other hand, Bears 2010 season, 3rd and 8 on our own 35 yard line, the opposition knows exactly what to expect and plans accordingly. So basically what's required to be successful is 1. deception - that the opposition doesn't know what to expect, and 2. chemistry, that  all our players are on the same page and adjusting accordingly.

Bearing this in mind, let's apply it to our offseason moves this year. 1st round draft choice must be an OL ready to play. This can't be approached in FA. No matter how good the veteran player is, he played in a different system with different guys, and there's no guarantee of success. Additionally, shoring up the offensive line adds immensely to the deception factor. The running back might not be in to block but to run a pattern. Same goes for the TE or two TE. That draws off LBs and DBs. The QB has more time to set up and throw, and gives our speedy WR corps those valuable seconds required to get into position. and do their magic.

DT should be addressed in the draft as well due to the chemistry factor. On the other hand, CB and WR which are more independent roles, there's no problem that they should be addressed through FA.

I also believe that CB is a bigger priority than DT or WR. We do have that push up the middle in our front four (I don't believe we are that much worse off without Harris) but we were getting creamed on the quick dump-offs and jump balls. Getting a top-flight CB in the 2nd round (Ras-I Dowling might be available) should be a priority unless an available DT is clearly the better player.

Would like to hear your opinions.
