Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

29. Chicago Bears: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State. Sherrod doesn't get a lot of fanfare, but he'd start immediately at either tackle in Chicago.

62. Chicago Bears: Drake Nevis, DT, LSU. Another unheralded DT prospect, Nevis is a plug-and-play three-technique that could start for the departing Tommie Harris.

I'd be happy if the draft fell like this, wouldn't you?

In my opinion, saying Sherrod “would start right away” is not a huge compliment considering the known competition he would have to compete with during OTAs in Bourbannais this summer.

I think Sherrod is a project that will take at least one-year to get straight. I think he has size and athleticism, but his technique (for the pro-game) is not the same as some of his counterparts in this draft class.

My worry is that Bears fans will see this as the Bears addressing a “need” in the 1st rd that most feel is a “must have in the first” (i.e.— OT) and expect him to come right out the gates and stabilize the left or right side. I hope that I am wrong, if Sherrod is selected, but something tells me many fans will be disappointed at the learning curve that will be there for Sherrod in 2011-12.

Semper Fi!

Gems of the 2011 NFL Draft (Prediction Made 3/30/11 @4:39p)

Sherrod is pro ready

He looks real good on film

Most scouts have called him pro ready, his ceiling just isn't as high as some of the others....

The best description I have heard about Sherrod is that he does everything well and nothing really bad. To me that sounds like consistency and reliability. Perhaps with more coaching he can become a legit All-Pro but if he’s a solid LT, who won’t give up too many sacks then he would be a good addition. I think the best bet is for a guy like Gabe Carimi to fall. He lacks the solid technique that Sherrod has but with proper coaching he sure as hell would learn it and become a vicious LT. The kind of LT that no DE/OLB wants to line up against.

I would love Carimi at 29, but he's not falling that far

To me, you don't need a superstar at every position

What we need instead are consistant starters that compliment each other while fitting into the system. Derek Sherrod is definately NFL ready, as he has all the skill sets to go with great and polished technique. Plus I like his versatility, as he could also play at Guard if needed.

I am not a big fan of Carimi, as you stated his technique is no where near that of Sherrod. Having power is one thing, but if you have no technique to back that up then as an O-Lineman you will fail against solid pass rushers who know what they are doing, which the NFC North is full of. To be a good LT you have to find a balance between brutality and wisdom in a sence, meaning you have to balance strength with technique.

Now as far as the first 2 choices in this draft are concerned I really like both players, imo Terrell McClain would be the better option in the second round as opposed to Nevis. Also an O-Lineman I really want to see dress as a Bear is Marcus Cannon, who I feel can emerge as the best Guard of this draft in a short amount of time.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Well I disagree about Carimi....

He played and shut down some of the top pass rushers in this draft. Carimi’s footwork isn’t bad it just needs improvement. Plus the guy has all the confidence and work ethic to improve in that area so I think it’s a bit unfair to dismiss him. Plus he’s another NFL ready tackle. He’s best to start at RT before moving to LT. His demeanor and overall presence is exactly what Mike Tice looks for in his OL. Sherrod also has a lot of things to work on so he isn’t the end all of LT’s.

I think either Nevis or McClain would be good. Nevis is a bit short but can disrupt the sin out of the opposing line and McClain has the burst to get into the backfield consistently but he’s much more raw technique-wise than Nevis is.

Cannon will be gone in the 2nd unless the Bears trade away their 1st for an additional 2nd or if they reach for him in the 1st, which I don’t think they should and would be foolish to do. Just because recently he has been placed with a low 1st doesn’t mean he should be drafted that highly. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have him but not at the expense of a better pick or obtaining more picks.

That bit about Cannon is true

I want to see him and would be willing to see him as our first round selection, however even I feel that may be a reach and in an ideal situation I would nab him in the second round at our selection.

Trading down makes more sense as we approach draft day, we can fill alot more needs with quality players – the first round pay and worries of first rounder expectations.

That would be awesome...but ain't gonna happen!!!

good guards always fall in the draft

he might be there in the 4th

I don't know about the 4th,

but he should be there when we pick in the late 3rd…and he’d be worth it at that pick.

look at the drafts of the past

they are full of high rated interior linemen that fall into the later rounds. Unless a guy is a slam dunk G or C they usually slip. Since tackle is the harder position to play, many teams will draft a guy that has tackle skills then move him to guard if tackle dosen’t work out.

just a few examples of good interior guys that fell

G – N.O. – Carl Nicks 5th round
G – N.O. – Jhari Evans 4th round
C – Colts – Jeff Saturday undrafted
C – N.E. – Dan Koppen 5th round
G – S.D. – Kris Dielman undrafted
C – Atl – Todd McClure undrafted
C/G – Giants – Sean O’Hara undrafted
G – K.C. – Brain Waters undrafted
C – K.C. Casey Wiegmann undrafted
C – Ravens – Matt Birk 6th round

I didn't even realize Carl Nicks was a 5th rounder

Marcus Cannon really reminds me of another Carl Nicks

No way to know who is "pro ready" and who will need time

I remember everyone’s certainty that Tony Mandarich would be exactly this, a pro ready lineman that would be an immdiate plug-in upgrade. It didn’t work out the way we all thought it would.
Point is drafting is hit or miss and I don’t know anyone with a formula that is worth a salt. So my point is draft the best available talent at O-line and see what happens, I tend to think it could only get better than what we saw last year but again its always a crap shoot the draft.

White Sox fans need not apply.

Tony Mandarich had to get off roids in the NFL

I would be happy with that...

Or the DT Austin from UNC in the 1st(even though it’s a reach) but I think he’s going to be good.

then OL in rds 2 & 3

I would be satisfied if the draft fell like this.

throw in Johnny Patrick in the 3rd and that would be a solid first two days

by IndyBearsFan88 on Apr 18, 2011 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

I'll Take it!

Not going to get into all the other Zillion combinations and permutations,
(sans Trade downs/Trade ups) in lieu of, etc..
I’ll gladly take Sherrod and Nevis if they fall this way :)

And in the third?

Sherrod and Nevis work fine. OT/DT or DT/OT doesn’t matter. Lot of talent on both lines this year. Should be pretty much win/win in both rounds. Who do you like in the third?

Ton of talent in rounds 3-5. I’ll play Ben Stein here: “Taiwan Jones? Taiwan Jones?” Why? I think he’s a better 3rd round pick than Garrett Wolfe was and he could add yet another explosive option to the Martz attack on reason. View this as a pre-emptive strike on the evil green and gold empire of the northland—-the fools think they can get him in the fourth round.
