Mike Brown is back... as Major Wright (or Chris Conte)?

Let me start off by saying, I am a huge fan of Mike Brown and he was my favorite defender in the NFL. He was always underrated even though he made big plays for Bears. He was one of the best hitters in the NFL, and was good in pass coverage as well ( he played FS and SS). His career was shortened by injuries and that's one reason he was underrated. Now that he has been gone for a few years, I was thinking if if Bears will have a safety like him again. I am a Gator fan, and am curious if Major Wright can take that role. He hits hard as hell and is average at coverage( he should develop). If not maybe Chris Conte, the free safety Bears took this year could be like Brown. I actually have high hopes for Conte in this league. Even though the problem Bears have now is line, Wr, and aging on D, our secondary isn't that great. With a year under his belt, hopefully Wright gets better and better so him and Conte COULD be partners back there and be good.

P.S.: if both Conte and Wright be like Mike Brown then that would be even better!

The one that always everybody forgets about Mike Brown is what made him so valuable was just how loud he was. Mike Brown might be the loudest person I’ve ever been near, you can easily hear his high pitched shriek from just about anywhere. The man was loud, in the way he talked, the way he dressed, the way he hit people, the way he made plays. I highly doubt you’ll be able to replace what Mike Brown brought, since it was a lot more then just those plays.

Oh yeah, how could i forget that he was a vocal leader too

I hope Bears bring him back to coach, he could be a great coach!

Truth, but I'm a big fan of Gill Byrd

A lot of that has to do with the 2009 season of Jairus Byrd. Lets just say the man has earned my trust with the back end.

Granted, having Mike Brown in the coaching mix would only add a positive effect.

I think Major Wright is a faster version of Mike Brown

His coverage skills will improve with more reps. Thats why this lockout needs to be over besides signing FAs!!!!

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Personally

I’m high on both Wright and Conte for the future. Wright could start contributing right now, and Conte could develop and become very good.
They are both good coverage and hard hitters. However, I think Major Wright is a slightly better safety overall, and Chris Conte is a little bit better in coverage.
I like to think of Major Wright and Chris Conte our Strong Safety and Free Safety, respectively, of the future.

Right now major wrights closest similarity is his injury rate

That said I am very happy that the bears put resources into having a solid future at safety now, instead after a collapse. Tampa-2 is just brutal to watch with poor safety play.

First off let me say Im a big fan of both guys, but the question still remains......

Which is gonna play Free Safety and which is gonna play Strong Safety? Everybody is saying Conte to FS, but I think his skill set translates better to SS at this level.

Wright could

but he has quite a ways to go

Most of the scouting reports that I've read

Say that Conte probably could have been available in the 5th round – maybe later. So it looks like we really did “reach” for this guy, when we obviously had more pressing needs in other areas. That’s why I didn’t like this pick from the get-go. I don’t see the Mike Brown comparison, at all – and I don’t think he’s got the range to fit at FS in the NFL. That said, if he works hard he may develop into a solid strong safety, some day. They will probably groom him to eventually replace Chris Harris, or back-up the injury-prone Major Wright.

Most of the reports I've read said that.....

Conte was dashing up several teams’ draft boards and that he wouldn’t have made it to the Bears 5th round selection.

Honestly, I couldn’t care less. If the Bears wanted this guy the most at that pick then it’s ok by me, especially if they felt he wouldn’t be there in the 5th. They weren’t the only team interested and I honestly trust the guys getting paid to scout these kids more than guys getting paid to write about the guys that are being scouted.

Will it turn out to be a great pick? Only time will tell. But then, the odds of a first round pick being a success are only about 50/50, so if the Bears took a chance in the third round, I don’t think it will make or break them.

What us as fans need to realize is that in the team War Rooms those "reports" dont mean squat

Look at Tyson Aulalu last year. Most “reports” had him going in the second, but Jacksonville made him a top 10 pick and he played pretty decent for a rookie. And from what I’ve heard the coaches had Conte rated much higher then the “analysts” and at the end of the day its the coaches/GM’s who are pulling the trigger not the Mike Mayocks (although he was high on him too)

Since Brown left

There have been struggles at S, but it seems there are finally some potential stars there.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
