The correct answer is "no".

It is impossible to have a winning season when no games have been played in said season.

is this a riddle?

If you go in the bathroom, turn off the lights, and say "Da Coach" 5 times while facing the mirror... Ditka will appear and slap the wussy right out of you.

If you were to ask me if the New England Patriots will have a winning season this year...

I would give the exact same answer. NO. They would have a 0-0 season.

Unfortunately, I am now firmly in the camp of there will not be an NFL season next year. Not a game. Not until Fall 2012. Neither side will allow it to happen.

by Doshi on Jun 8, 2011 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

If there isn't a season in 2011 their record wouldn't be 0-0, it would be nothing.

Non existent… Nil… Nada… perhaps even incomplete?

I meannn...

Assuming we have a full, 16-game season…

They went 6-10 last year. A winning record would mean 3 more wins this year in a schedule that includes two games against the Super Bowl champ Packers and two games against NFC NORTH DIVISION CHAMP CHICAGO BEARS, as well as games against playoff teams like New Orleans, Atlanta, and Kansas City.

The answer: Nope. 8-8 MAYBE at best. I’m thinking more like 6-10 or 7-7 with 3rd place finish in the division.

Bears were given a win by the officials in week 1 and that was the game that WON you guys the division. . .We beat the Packers at home last year without our starter, and we almost beat the Pack on the road and all those game were with our back-up QB. . .

Hey thats why we play the games. Yes even the Lions fall under any given sunday now. I expect the only NFC north team with a losing record to be the Vikings this year. Someone will finish 8-8 two others GB being one will have a winning record.

I see 3 teams having a better than .500 record. . .

I really do. for all my hating on Cutler, he will be in Martz System for 2 years and should have a better grasp on what him and his WR’s are suppose to do, and the Bears D is just that the Bears D one of the better D’s in the league that alone will get you a few wins. The Packers have Rogers and that wide open offense and they are going to be better on defense with another year under their belts in that 3-4, and the Lions (if Staff stays healthy) will win more games than anyone thought they would. . .Say what you all want but he won the only games he completed last year and was leading every game he started referring to the Bears and Jets games. 3 teams that are going to make the NFC South look silly this year and screw the EAST! they are all OVERRATED!

Okay, then when a ball rolls on Earl Bennett's chest until it's called a catch

to win a game, I’ll be more than happy to hear your complaints then.

You know what, yes, it should be decided by arbitrary distinctions sometimes (not really arbitrary, cause a rule’s a rule). Or, he could have made the whole thing a non-issue and hung onto it (I’d prefer this option, wouldn’t you?).

He threw the catch away. That is all.

he slammed the ball on the ground and stood up

After catching the ball with both hands, passing it to one hand, then passing it to the other hand before slamming it to the ground. All the while falling to the ground.

If that is not completing the process, I do not know what is. Sadly, everyone in the league not in the rules committee, including a hall of fame coach of your very own team thinks it was a terrible call and even more rotten rule.

Your team was gifted a win. That is all.

Gifted a win by a player who couldn't restrain himself from celebrating.

If you’re blaming anyone, blame it on your receiver. I’m not denying we lose if that’s the catch it should have been.

I’m done with this, because it seems your only point of contention is the number that ended up in the loss column. They aren’t changing that.

Next time, I’m listening to my own “Oh No, Not This S*** Again” protocol.

God forbid he celebrates like every other player who scores an obvious TD in the league.

Not everyone can be Barry Sanders and his eternally classy handing of the ball to the Ref on the way to the sideline.

Honestly, I do not care about the win or loss anymore. The rule and the resultant decision by the rules committee to not change said rule leaves me dry heaving. Compound that with everyone with a working set of eyes, who can be objective, coming out saying it was a catch and TD and I always get heart burn thinking about it.

I love the game of football. Have since I was a kid and even back then I would have been able to tell you it was a catch. It is a rule that is not good for the game of football.

I don't mind celebrating after the play.

If he stands up with it, I don’t care if he does Ocho’s Irish jig while fake-dropping his drawers and signing the ball, he earned the TD.

That’s all he had to do.

Stand. Up. Holding the ball. TD Lions, game over, shame Bears.

If anything, I’d bet it was called because he was still on his arse when he spiked it and I suppose it could have looked like the play was still in progress – after all, don’t celebrate until the play’s over. I mean, I suppose someone could have wandered over and slapped it out of his hand, incomplete.

Look, I agree it was a catch… All he has to do to render the whole thing moot is stand up.

Personally, I like to discuss issues I think are bad for football.

That particular rule is bad for football. I don’t think its even possible for me to care any less about who got the win. You’re right, its over. However, its still a bad rule and its near the top of my list of items I feel the NFL should address. I’m a fan of the forward pass and I hate any rule that limits its effectiveness.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

I don't have a problem discussing a bad rule.

I have a problem with the statement, you didn’t really win that game we did. So if we want to discuss the rule itself and not go the other route that’s fine. I actually think the rule the way it’s written is terrible, but it was enforced properly.

by Ditkavsworld on Jun 9, 2011 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I begrudgingly agree

I hate the fact that I can’t find fault with the way it was enforced. I’m way over it though. The only reason I’m still upset about the rule is that the competition committee refuses to change what I think most people can probably agree is a bad rule. I personally feel like the won’t look at it because they’re afraid the fans will view it as them admitting it was called wrong.

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

I think the Lions will have a breakout season

However, it will be as an 8-8 team and their first non-losing season in quite a while. It’ll start off well, then Stafford will get injured for four or so games and they lose all of them, then try to finish the season in a flurry but get rolled by divisional opponents that can pick apart their back 7.

This was exactly what I was going to post...

8-8 will be it this year, until they can shore up their secondary and fix a leaky OL. Stafford is also going to have to play careful and smart as to not get hurt again. Personally, I really like Stafford and his ability, but he has to stay on the field. This year will be an improvement, but not a winning season, yet.

The Packers are going to be their usual self next season. 11 to 12 wins. They had mass injuries and still had an amazing season.

The Vikings are going to continue to wallow in the basement. I love saying that. It just feels good.

The Bears are going to slip from last season, there is no way in hell they stay healthy two seasons in a row. It is a near impossibility in one season, let alone two. Last season was a blessed season and one that will not be duplicated.
