Revisiting an old post in the midst of a possible new CBA. UDFA style!

Fellow Bears fans, Let me say first off, I am so excited for a new deal to be done so we can see our team back in action. Nothing would make my summer better than to see the Bears prepare for the upcoming season. I have become ill watching our Chicago baseball teams try and salvage their mediocre to poor season. I would like to revisit an old post in spirit of the upcoming training camp. (if a deal is done in time) Let me show you one Undrafted Free agent that I have been hoping the Bears consider bringing in for a shot at a spot on the team. Insert - Kyle Glazier.

Star-divide

Kyle Glazier (LB-Wester Illinois University)

6'1 225 pounds  4.6 40, 20 bench reps 225lbs, 33" vertical

-Runner up for the Buck Buchanan award for the 2010 season

-Ranked 2nd nationally in tackles with 167, and set the record for most tackles in a game (FCS) with 25

- Over his career at Western, he posted 35 starts with 393 tackles, 5 Ints, 3FF, 3 QB Hurries, 7 Sacks, and 29 TFL.

My take on Mr. Glazier.

Kyle is a bit undersized as far as weight goes. but that can be fixed with the right training and weight room. He is a very instinctive tackler and obviously puts up the stat sheet to confirm that. He isnt that fastest LB out there but can get to the ball using his instincts. His biggest upside is that he doesnt miss a lot of tackles. Once he gets a hold of the ball carrier, there is no where to go. His biggest downside is that he gets blocked pretty easily in the run game. If he can learn how to shed blocks, there is no doubt that he would be a great linebacker. Im not saying that he could come in and challenge anyone for a roster spot immediatley. But I do think he could start off as a great Special Teamer, (Tim Shaw) and possibly step in someday to vie for a starting role. I am a personal fan of Mr. Glazier and I grew up around him and his family. He is a very good football player on and off the field and I would love to see him suit up in a Bears uniform. Please feel free to comment on wether or not you agree!

Looking at his specs,

I could not figure out what position he played at first. Then I saw you mention LB.

I wouldn’t exactly call 225 lbs undersized, and I’m not sure how much more you could add to his frame without slowing him down too much. Could he play SS?

Briggs is only an inch taller

and plays at 242. I wouldn’t say Briggs is too slow, and I could easily see him adding some weight.

Very good point, as Briggs was considered under-sized after his senior year,

and he added bulk after being drafted. Definitely similar in those terms.

But, at the end of the day, Briggs is still a three-time All Pro and a six-time Pro Bowler, and this guy is an UDFA.

I too see more of a SS...

than a LB. It’s not necessarily about hitting or toughness, but at 225lbs. I see him having durability issues. I do agree the Bears need to add some talent/depth at LB to have success this season. Hopefully Roach gets signed and perhaps another journeyman LB for depth’s sake.

Not to come off as a total jerk..

But if he is so good, why wasn’t he drafted? Sure, plenty of players slip through the cracks, but what are the big knocks on him (besides undersized and inability to shed blocks)?

jerk....

lol, just kidding.

Glazier’s biggest knocks are speed (4.74 40 time at his pro day), athleticism and the lack of elite competition at the college level.

He’s a heady kid who puts himself into position to make plays, but his playing speed might be worse than his track speed. At the college level, he was able to make up for it with his instincts, vision and football IQ, but his speed and athleticism are going to be a problem in the NFL.

I’m not sure where the 4.6 40 time that is posted in the OP came from, but his Pro Day 40 time (link pops) is the one I listed above. He was not invited to the NFL combine and he attended the ELITE combine in Detroit, but ELITE apparently only makes their results known to the players, scouts and agents, as far as I can tell from their website.

The only significant video I could find of him is here (pops, skip to 2:03 if you don’t feel like sitting through two+ minutes of reading about his accolades) and I was really impressed by Glazier’s nose for the ball and his vision, as well as his ability to diagnose a play, but I was taken aback by how slow and stiff he was in the same sense. Imagine that speed at the NFL level. I don’t think the kid will translate to the NFL.

Yeah agreed

He seems like he wouldnt be able to play at the next level and doesnt seem fast enough to contribute of special teams. I’d pass…
