Bears' WR search not expected to end with splash

"I see PRIDE, I see POWER, I see a BADASS MOTHA WHO WON'T TAKE NO CRAP OFF NOBODY!"
this would be pretty ironic
after all the clammering back and forth of who we want or whos the better fit for the system/jay cutler…but ii could see it happening though with JA’s line of thinking being that they’re going to see what kind of strides Knox, Bennet, Hester, Olsen make before bringing someone in. And then LRT’s post about why we should we wait…it was just be fitting if we didnt get a WR
We really don't know who to believe at this point
Where there are reports suggesting the Bears will target a WR during FA and there are reports saying otherwise. Predictions and speculations are a tricky matter to deal with.

Yup
And we’ve heard so many reports like this turning out to be false. So nothing is concrete until FA is live.
My ultimate counterclaim against this article is that the Bears have over 40 million dollars in Cap to spend. Obviously someone is in the Bears sights as to top it off with George McCaskey declaring us in “win now” mode it is almost unlikely to NOT see the Bears making a splash or two in FA.

That's why i feel its a smoke screen
it wouldn’t make any sense to not add some key pieces when you was one game away from reaching the super bowl. The Bears defense is championship caliber, and the offense might be a couple pieces away from being on that level.

This isn't the first time Jerry has built a smoke screen
He’s done that in the last 2 seasons and we always come away from FA with the biggest move/splash in each of them.

I wouldn't get too attached to any idea about what Angelo might or might not do.
He’s pretty good about not tipping his hand. Loose lips sink ships.

haha!
I don’t think they’ll sign a WR. But I’m not opposed to stoking the WR fire… stay tuned at 5pm central for yet another wide-out speculation post… (someone shoot me)

I'd get Plaxico on the phone,
but somehow, I don’t think that’d go over too well.

How about guard speculation post?
As much as we want an upgrade at WR, getting a stud guard might end up being more beneficial.

Haven't heard speculation
about Nicks, but Dahl’s name has come up repeatedly in articles.

Yea it's been kinda surprising
I’m thinking with Nicks it’s more to do with the media playing it safe since Nicks received a 1st round tender before the lockout. Of course that tender most likely will be tossed out, so I’m certain that when he officially available then reports between Nicks and the Bears will skyrocket.
Now with Dahl that would be a good move on it’s own right, but does that mean Garza is on the way out of Chicago since Dahl is a RG?

Nope
Move Garza to LG. He played last year out of necessity, but I make that move either way. Let Omi and Williams duke it out for the swing tackle reserve spot.

... That's a joke based on Erik's bringing up Nicks more than any other free agent name at any position.

Angelo suprised us two years in a row
and I wouldn’t rule out a third surprise in a row, but will that suprise be a WR or and OG and several players to address the teams lack of depth. I think Angelo is desperate to win now, and it will be very interesting to see what he does to make that happen.

I know this is all just speculation and hear say but this still make me angry
If this ends up coming to fruition you can file it away under “reasons to hate Jerry Angelo”
Well, the Bears have never had a really great wide receiver.
So why get one now?
Above all; keep 'em guessing, never let them lose their sense of confusion.
WR has to take a back seat to G.
Spend the money at G first. Then see what is affordable at WR and CB.
Yes
And honestly I think CB is a greater need than WR. The upgraded offensive line will improve our recievers in a way, but I dont think we can consistently beat Green Bay with tim jennings starting. Enter Brent Grimes?

I personally don't mind this.
I sort of predicted early that the Bears might not even sign a FA WR this year. I would mind if they signed someone cheaper who also fits the system, such as Santana Moss, possibly a Mike Sims-Walker if they like him. But I don’t think the Bears are willing to go out and spend the big money on a receiver with the receivers that are in the market this year.
Sydney Rice is a concern, since he has only had one good year; granted, he has had very inconsistent QB play, but it is still only 1 year of success and a concern nonetheless. He is also just coming off of a pretty serious hip injury. I don’t think the Bears will want to pay the large paycheck for a somewhat risky receiver, even if there is a possibility he could be a fantastic one for many years to come.
Another top receiver who could be a great fit could be Santonio Holmes. However, it seems pretty likely that the Jets will make him one of their priorities to re-sign. He also has been in trouble with the law a few times, and so his character could be questioned. I don’t even see Holmes making it into the market really, and if he did, I’m not so sure the Bears would pay the large paycheck to a receiver with questionable character; I’m also not sure if Holmes would even consider the Bears, as he would no doubt be highly sought after, and has shown no public interest in the Bears so far.
I would see Vincent Jackson as a good, big, number 1 WR, but he will likely still be under a franchise tag when free agency comes, which leaves the only option of the Bears trading for him. I don’t see this happening, as the Bears like the players that they have, and are not too keen on the idea of giving up more future draft picks after trades for Jay Cutler and Gaines Adams sapped them of early round draft picks in recent years. So I don’t think Vincent Jackson is really a possibility this year.
What I could see happening is either no WR signings this year for the Bears, or a cheaper signing. Then the Bears could save that money for a splash in next year’s free agency (I know, we all want a receiver now, but what’s just one more year? Maybe our talent will grow exponentially and we won’t even need to sign a top WR? Unlikely that our receiving corps will grow that much, but possible.). Next year’s free agency will see some faces that I would really like to see come to Chicago, and I think the Bears would also like to see come to Chicago. Vincent Jackson would hit free agency again and would likely not be franchised again, provided he stays in San Diego one more year and doesn’t get traded and offered a contract extension.
More importantly [IMO], Larry Fitzgerald! would hit free agency, and the Cardinals will not be able to give him the franchise tag according to a clause in his contract. He has showed that he does not want to stay in Arizona as they are, arguably, headed for a rebuilding phase, and he has shown signs that he has respect for Chicago and Jay Cutler. This would be the ultimate signing, in my opinion, and would be well worth the wait of one more year for a true number 1 receiver.
Of course, like everything else this off-season, this is all speculation…-.-
If this is true
Then Martz and his coaching crew need to run drills to teach the WRs how to fight for the damn ball.

What’s up guys. I actually had an opportunity to read the entire article and I was surprised that he believes that size doesn’t matter. There have been fairly short receivers in the league that were able to dominate (Lynn Swan and Reggie Wayne to name a few), but they had such extraordinary skills that it didn’t matter. If we looked back at some of the best qbs in history they had elite receivers. Some we knew and some we didn’t. Qbs need those playmakers to bail them out when they get in a jam. There’s a reason why they thank them when they’re inducted into the hall of fame. They also teach new receivers alot in a short period of time. Austin Collie did work with Peyton, but Wayne was very instrumental in helping him understand routes and ball handling. He’s turning into a reliable receiver. From past experience, I can honestly say they’re not cheap by any long shot. Roy Williams didn’t work out so we dished out more cash to Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. We simply move them along. Two things are a qbs best friend:great oline and a dominating receiver. Some things can be taught and then there are things they must already have. Greg Jennings is a beast on the ball and was well compensated. When the bears bet the house on Cutler, they threw open the door to going after what is needed. He needs a Jennings prototype receiver so he can create the harmony that is needed. This is not the time for the front office to decide they can do without it. The packers are a very young and talented team so you have to go all in. I completely endorse the big, elite receiver at any cost. Don’t cut your qb off before he can really realize his true potential. The window of opprtunity doesn’t stay open very long.
Needagoodtime!
After taking a second look at this my feelings have changed
Just because they say the Bears won’t make a “big splash” move for a WR doesn’t mean they won’t get one at all. That just means that guys like Sidney Rice, Santonio and V-Jax could be off the board
However that still leaves guy like Santana Moss, MSW, Braylon, Plaxico, and (as much as I don’t hate to admit it) Chad Johnson (I think its back to Johnson now, right?) that could be had for much lower salaries and still make a significant impact. This in turn would leave the big money for some O-Line help
by IndyBearsFan88 on Jul 15, 2011 4:46 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
I think
Braylon Edwards is a pretty realistic target. I think he’ll get secon-tier money once Rice, Holmes and Jackson sign, so that would be appealing to the Bears. He’s big and fast, and despite his drops is generally pretty good. Holmes might become the highest-paid receiver in the league (big mistake imo), so Edwards will probably be signed to a lesser deal after the first wave of stars sign.
DEJESUS!!!
Never, ever, EVER on Edwards
I’m good with our current crop of WRs before I take a shot at the droppapotamus. I’d rather have Capitol Moss than Edwards. I’d rather have Justin Gage than Edwards. He sucked in college, he’s sucked his entire professional career, and he will continue to suck for the rest of his professional career.
He's not a "droppapotamus"
Do I have to link the info AGAIN?

Here are the LINKS
First off here is one from PFF showing that he was the best on the JETS and 12th best in the league in drop percentage last season (LINK)
And here is another from PFF that he only dropped 4 passes last season and 6 in 09- hardly a “droppapotamus”. (LINK)
