Poll Of The Day: Who is the Bears worst player?
After asking you guys who you believed to be the best Chicago Bears player yesterday, we thought we'd go the other direction today. A quick note, only current Bears players will be included in the poll. If you go with "other", at least make sure your guy is on the roster.

I'm Surprised You Didn't Include Josh Bullocks
since you put in Steltz- those two are identical twins.
Reverse image, maybe....
Steltz is a heady guy who lacks athleticism.
Bullocks is a athletic guy who lacks the heady element.
Two sides of the same coin. Put them together and you’d have a All-Pro.

Honestly
I have totally given up on Williams.
He doesn’t show any sign of progress, not even at guard.
If the bears were able to run the ball at all last year was because Kreutz got healthy and Garza too. Not to mention Olsen is getting smarter with run blocking.
Manumaleuna comes in as a close second. This guy needs to GO. If he’s not 100% during this training camp, cut his ass.
Steltz isn’t bad. He is just limited. There isn’t an athlete who is universal and can do it all on any NFL roster. Danieal Manning was one that looked everybit as one dimensional could get, and turned out that plugged in the right place he blossomed.
Don’t know why he’s on this list.
Monsters of the Midway Incoming
Manu is
Williams, Harrison and Steltz are all on rookie contracts, so at least they’re semi-cheap while sucking…Manu is paid to be a speedbump but has been worn down to a rumble strip

That’s the problem with the wording… it can be worst in absolute terms (Harrison doesn’t even suit up most games) or worst relative to expectations and/or contract (I wish Manumaleuna didn’t suit up most games).
Cosmis: JESUS LORD IN HEAVEN DANIEAL MANNING JUST KILLED A MAN
That's not a problem.
That’s a polling/discussion technique – it’s up to you to define “worst.”

It muddles the poll, though. Each of the three – absolute/expectations/contract – leads me to a different player (Harrison/Williams/Manumaleuna) and I can’t vote for all three… much as I’d like to!

I never judge the money someone makes against his output
It is what it is, the two have no correlation…
If someone were to do that then they better do it the other way too. Consider the guy that gives the most bang for the buck.

That’s part of the problem with the wording – you might not but others might. The players I least want to see on the Bears’ roster in 2011 are not necessarily the least able players; people with a win now mentality could think differently from those with who are looking to the future.
Cosmis: JESUS LORD IN HEAVEN DANIEAL MANNING JUST KILLED A MAN
It's a poll...
No one will be graded on their answers. Everyone can interpret the question how ever they want.
I’ll never begrudge a player for making the most he can make, regardless of skill level.
I’ll bash his on field ability if warranted, or bash the contract itself if it’s handcuffing the team moving forward, but I’ll never say this guy’s play dosen’t match up to his deal as the basis for my criticism.

Given that the newest comments I’ve just read in this thread all mention contracts, you might be a rarity in that regard…
I still say the poll is worded imprecisely and thus any conclusions we can draw from the results will be muddied (psychology background: if you’re ambiguous in questionnaire design, the answers you receive will be equally ambiguous) but it serves to generate discussion, which I suspect is the real aim here. I’m not falling for such an old tri… oh, bugger.
Cosmis: JESUS LORD IN HEAVEN DANIEAL MANNING JUST KILLED A MAN
I see where Les is coming from.
Once the player is on the field, contract is irrelevant to production. It does, however, create expectation, one that the player is tied to, and since the player agreed to the contract, he is in essence agreeing to what is expected of him, although he’s not necessarily the cause of the deal he signed. Obviously a guy’s not going to turn down a contract for far more than he may be worth, but the difference between what he’s “worth” or what he produces and what his contract pays him leads to a degree of amplified “worse-ness.”
I’m with Les in that regard of holding a contract against a guy. But I wouldn’t say the contract is completely irrelevant.
And Manu did have an awful season.

True, I guess I never thought of it like that...
but for me its still Manu…he’s paid to be a blocking TE…and he struggled with it. To me, Williams still has slight potential to pan out, while I never expected Steltz to be anything more than depth and ST. Harrison is disapointing since he was 1st round talent in the third round, but other than his rookie year he hasn’t done anything, so I’d say its between him and Manu

Because if he cannot get on the field with THIS offensive line group, then he’s got to be one of the worst players in the league.

I voted for Williams
Because of the expectations for someone that was the 14th overall pick in the draft. He’s basically looking like he’ll be a career backup at the NFL level.
Maneumamena is probably right behind him.
Harrison has been up and down, mostly average at best. But he was only a 3rd round pick.
Steltz?
I voted for Williams HOWEVER
if you want to get technical, I suppose you could argue the worst player would be someone who is on the bottom of the depth chart and clinging to a roster spot and is inactive on game days but as it is.
I forgot about Todd Collins, whew, he’s awful.
Jay Cutler is still my quarterback.

Jay Cutler
He fakes injuries. His body Language is horrendous. He hates orphans. He did it, in the boardroom, with the lead pipe….Oh sorry, I was channeling my inner Dilfer for a second. I voted for Manu.

Manu
Mostly cuz of his contract and that he took Dez Clarks roster spot

Harrison is hands down the worst player on the roster....
I don’t think anyone else is even close. Even given his contract, $1.2M, he’s still just the worst player on the roster.
I’d argue that he’s the worst player who’s been on the roster in the last decade.
Some want to point to Todd Collins (who isn’t even on the roster) but let’s face it, Collins at least tried. Harrison isn’t even appearing to do that. He’s a waste of a jersey and a roster spot, IMO.
He’s been so bad that the Bears should be able to get a refund.

Someone should have told him that just becasue his surname means “Son of Harris”, he doesn’t need to suck like post-injury Tommie Harris…
Cosmis: JESUS LORD IN HEAVEN DANIEAL MANNING JUST KILLED A MAN
Not even fair, my brother from another motherland....
Harris tried. He was just broken. But he gave it his all. Look at the shape he got himself into last offseason to try and bounce back. He worked his butt off, literally. His Body just couldn’t do it.
Harrison doesn’t appear to try. He’s just collecting a paycheck. By contrast look at the shape he showed up in last offseason (hint, the shape was round).
Harris was done, but by no fault of his own. He just broke. Harrison couldn’t hold Tommie’s jock when the former beast was at his worst.
At least the deflated Harris suited up most games.

Chris Williams hasnt lived up to his draft status
And Manu is the most overpaid blocking TE in the league. I say its a wash honestly between them two. I wouldn’t say that Chester Taylor deserves to be on this list, but I don’t think he was worth the money either for a 3rd down recieving back. He was a lot better in Minne and was cheaper too.
Of the 3 high priced free agents Angelo acquired in 2010, Peppers is the only one that I think deserved the money. The other two seem like desperate moves to improve the roster so Angelo/Smith didn’t get the ax.
This season Angelo should be making another huge splash, but you have to wonder if they will bust like last year’s high priced free agents did. He needs to get a legit #1 reciever and he cannot miss because the Bears NEED that true #1 to take the pressure off of Cutler.
The other recievers are decent, but not great. Just one true great #1 will put the Bears in the talk for a Superbowl run.

You're not a Bears fan, so you wouldn't know.....
Harrison, or you’d change that opinion.
But all your points are pretty true.
The only exception I would take is to Taylor. Taylor was miss-used. Badly. I’d love to blame him, but I can’t. Martz tried to make him into a short yardage back, and that’s just not his game. It was pretty ridiculous, really, and very unfair to both the offense and to Taylor. Would have been smarter to bring in Bell for short yardage.
I know everyone is high on the #1 receiver thing (whatever a number 1 receiver is) But I think the Bears will be fine if they don’t get one. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be complaining if a better receiver is brought in. I’m just saying that the Bears made the NFCCG with this group of receivers and with the Matadors of the Midway.
I’m willing to do something completely outragious in Chicago. I’m willing to wait and see if these current players can d-e-v-e-l-o-p. Chicago is infamous for never giving players time to develop into their roles, especially QBs and WRs. Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to follow in GB, NE, IND and PIT’s footsteps an actually focus on developing the talented young players we have instead of ditching them when they aren’t top 10 in the league in their first couple of seasons under first an idiot and then a madman at the coordinator spot.

No, Im not a Bears fan
But Ive watched quite a few Bears games and have in-laws who are religious Bears fans who watch Bears games with me so that’s why you see me on the WCG site discussing the Bears.
The thing is, Harrison is a 3rd round pick on a rookie contract. He isn’t what Angelo envisioned he would be, but his contract isn’t breaking the bank. Manu on the other hand, has a fat contract for a blocking TE and he wasn’t worth the money at all. Maybe that is Martz’s fault since he doesn’t utilize TE’s but he struggled at what he was brought in for. For that reason, he was my pick. Same goes for Taylor, Martz mightve been to blame as well.
A #1 reciever is the go to guy, a guy you count on to catch the winning pass, and the best reciever on the team. If you have a Calvin or Andre Johnson on your roster, that would qualify as having a #1 reciever. Johnny Knox or Earl Bennet? Maybe one day but not as of right now.
The Bears made it to the NFC Championship because of the defense in my opinion. The 2010 Bears had a few decent games through the air, but nothing groundbreaking.
Its hard to say that the Bears will repeat the same success if they don’t get a #1 guy in Chicago. Its a passing league now, quarterbacks dominate games not running backs. Defense don’t just win championships anymore, quarterbacks and defense do. Just look at the last few Superbowls for evidence of that. If Cutler doesn’t have that true #1, I’m not so sure that opposing teams won’t figure out how to stop the Bears offense.
The Bears defense is aging so the offense can’t just rely on running the ball and defense like they’ve been doing for decades. I truly believe if Angelo doesn’t get that #1 guy or misses on one than Jay Cutler will regress in his devlopment in Martz’s offense.
Sidney Rice is a perfect #1 for the Bears in my eyes.

Knox and Bennett don't have the chance to prove that they can be "true #1s"
if their QB can’t reliably stay upright for 5 seconds. WR would be nice. But it’s not the top priority of this team right now. IMO, it’s priority 3 to 5, depending on where you place DT and CB in the hierarchy. Our first two priorities are a starting Guard and either another starting or a Swing Guard. That is currently the weakest position on this team. When Chris Williams is your starting LG, you know that something is wrong. Chris Williams is a Tackle, without question. Gabe Carimi is a Tackle, without question. Webb has the possibility of being a good Swing or Starting Tackle. We have only one legitimate Guard on this roster, and he’s clearly on the downside of his career (Garza). We need a young-ish starting Guard at the worst, and at best we need two and a Center to groom under Olin.
Offensive line is important
I agree, but you can pick up a decent couple of guards or a center just about anywhere whether its through trades, free agency, or later rounds in the draft. Its a lot harder to obtain a top flight #1 reciever and it also costs a lot more.
Its not very often you can get a #1 reciever for chump change. When you can even get one for a decent price, you pull the trigger. Offensive lineman are a dime a dozen outside of the tackle positions. Guards and centers are among the least paid offensive players in the NFL for a reason you know.

Manumaleuna is one of Martz’ former players and was brought in specifically as a blocking TE in his system. You won’t find anyone here who would disagree with you that he wasn’t worth the (or in fact, any) money.

Steltz is an okay STer, so at least there’s a contribution. They might be able to squeeze something out of Williams yet. And for all the crap we give Manu, he’s at least had a purpose and a reputation in the league, even if last season was pure… well, something too strong outside of a game thread.
Harrison’s hardly contributed anything since day one.
