Chicago Bears sign Stephen Paea & Chris Conte: Overflow open thread
According to chicagobears.com, the Bears #2 draft pick Stephen Paea signed. Also signing is 3rd rounder Chris Conte. The defensive tackle and safety seem to be contributors early on for the Bears. The only draft pick left to sign is top pick Gabe Carimi.
Let this be the Friday Free Agent Frenzy Overflow thread!!! And yes it's rated WCG-MA... More updates after the jump.
Wide receiver Sam Hurd, a former Cowboy, was signed to bolster the special teams...

I figured the Roy thing was going to happen...
no question due to relationship to Martz and Drake (which may well turn out to be a good thing)…but no MSW? I get that some would say he would not fit into our system…but is that a Martz decision?
With all these player decisions hoping to appease Martz (Todd Collins, Manatee, Olsen trade)…it makes me wonder…is JA being blackmailed…I mean does Martz have naked pictures of him or something (I’m kidding, maybe)

Evidently the CBA has changed the way first rounders negotiate
Owners are trying to pressure players into signing quick contracts and deals.
Trib Article Herei dont like
anyone who holds out. I thought this guy MF was a genuinely a good guy with team first approach. but by holding out his fucking respect goes down immensely. I hope this is not true, but if it is what a punk.
How dare he try to get paid
The NFL owners are always very good at playing the victim here. While players can be jerks sometimes about contracts, the owners are making the real money. I do not really shed tears for them having to pay good players extra, more power to a person who realizes his advantage and uses it.
Keep in mind, many of these guys are not just feeding there family, but also there aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents etc
Lets not
get into the “poor millionaire” routine – for Forte, he deserves a new contract, definitely, based on his production and importance to the team. If holding out for a few days is how he wants to make his point, I’m okay with that.
If its free, take two.

Ya he's only making 500,000
this isn’t like a veteran with a 50 million dollar contract holding out cause he wants more, this is a guy who has way outpreformed his rookie contract and wants a new one…I just wish he’d waited till after free agency
"Word of advice, don’t join, Bears fans are crazy."--- D-Jackfan10
he is due for a new contract...
next year. He doesn’t have to hold out to make a point, the Bears already know they have to
a) give him a new contract or
b) let him hit FA at the end of the season.
I have no respect for any holdout, ever.

"Word of advice, don’t join, Bears fans are crazy."--- D-Jackfan10
its a team game first.
By not showing up not only he is disrespecting his coaches, but also his teammate. I understand he needs to get paid, but fucking holding out during training camp is lowest in my book. You know what type of players hold out? It should be pretty obvious. There are other ways to restructure your contract like a lot of team players/leaders have done in the past.
This is his job
Not many RBs are going to be excited about playing for Martz, especially younger ones like Forte who are trying to establish themselves.
Contrary to popular belief, players do not give a crap that they might play for the “almighty Chicago Bears”, in fact if anything the McCaskey’s have a reputation as being stingy and our ownership as being inept. I know, I know, “THIS IS FOOTBALL” blah blah blah. This is a job for these guys, not high school or college ball.
You don’t think that Forte see’s what this organization is doing to people like Kreutz and other vets right now? It makes sense he is not beside himself to play for this team right now.
he is getting paid a lot of money...
He signed his contract. I dont get paid or a raise if i dont show up to my job. Hoding out will lose him money in the long run. It is his job to play. Period. No play no pay.
by Ryan21 on Jul 29, 2011 11:32 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
It's a good thought
But it’s not a contract that works both ways, He can be cut/released any time with no pay…
Find out what the other team wants to do. Then take it away from them.
-George Halas
i usually agree with that side of it...
But this is a situation unlike any other season. Rather than be a distraction when we are trying to improve our team, he just give them to work this out. If he doesnt have a new contract by season’s open, then hold out. But not now. Not when we are hopefully trying to make moves.
by Ryan21 on Jul 29, 2011 11:58 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Screw your job
You don’t run the risk of dying at 50 or a concussion and memory loss on a given day. I hate when fans compare what they do to professional athletes. If you get an hour lunch break, don’t get pissed when some guy who only gets a 30 min break wants to bitch about it.
Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!
I don't think Forte should be force to take the risk on serious injury while a deal is worked out though either.
I wish he would show up and watch practices rather than sit home though
by timoteo1312 on Jul 29, 2011 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions
If you're a running back sitting on a 2nd round contract
That you outperformed and playing a position where your shelf life is 3 years, you damn well better holdout. Emmit Smith held out 2 games into the season and his team went 0-2 in that span. Needless to say he got his money and from all accounts he was a well respected guy who’s in the HOF. it’s a business and Forte is doing what he gotta do.
Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

I don't think he's a punk for threatening to hold out
But I don’t think it’s the best way to go about it. Everyone and their mother knows that Forte deserves to get paid, and I don’t think even Jerry is too dumb to realize this. Forte should know that he will get taken care of – he just needs to be patient.
by NorthSideBearsFan on Jul 29, 2011 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't be so sure of that
I hope the Bears pay him, but this team hasn’t inspired confidence so far
Well the situation is a little different this year
He wasn’t able to negotiate in the offseason and he is not going to take any chances right now. RBs have a very short time in this league and they need to make money right now.
Like I said, this team is jacking around their long time vets right now, which is exactly why Forte doesn’t know if he will get taken care of.
The Bears refuse to learn that they reap what they sow. Angelo and Co pulls this crap all the time and the McCaskey family lets them do it.
I am not saying I feel sorry for this players, they make tons of money. But I refuse to demonize them and side with owners who make even more then they do.
For Forte I think this is a question of security
In a normal offseason he would most likely already have a new deal. Now he doesn’t and he’s looking at the final season of a contract that pays him 500k. Not exactly enough money to be set for life should he suffer a career ending injury in game 1 of the season.
If I was him, I would make it clear that I want a new deal before I risk my body on the field. He’s outperformed his rookie contract by a lot and deserves a solid signing bonus and 3-4 year deal. I think the Bears understand this.
if he holds out...
We have Chester. If Forte can’t wait a week until we are done sign our draft picks, ufa. And get our roster filled, let him lose his 30 GRAND a day for 30 days and deal with it next season. He is under contract and most likely going to get a new contract before the season starts.

Usually agree, but this may be unique
Forte is only getting $555K. Taylor got waaaay more last year and Forte said nothing. In fact, G. Wolfe was paid more than Forte last year.
RBs have a limited career length in the NFL, especially with the numbers Forte provides. Chicago has no real backup options at this point – they should pay him. He significantly outperformed his rookie salary, an injury in 2011 would end his career. He has been patient, but playing on his current salary is a high risk/low reward prospect.
This is the right time, while there is still money under the cap.
Go get ’em FORTE!
Find out what the other team wants to do. Then take it away from them.
-George Halas
We should definitely pay the guy. He has clearly out-performed his rookie deal.
"No I'm not going to 'limber up'. You ever see a lion stretching before it takes down a gazelle?"
He absolutely deserves a new or restructured contract
the part that burns me is that he came out and said he’d never hold out, that it does more harm than good, and then he starts talking about holding out.
I see the Bears making him an excellent offer, because they really do love him, but stick with being professional and you’ll probably be happier in the long run.
Yeah but...
The Bears also came out and said they’d take care of Forte…
One broken promise deserves another.

But we aren't those sites.
We give you opportunities to let it all out, but generally, we try to be a bit more of a respectful family-friendly site – you never know who’s reading the place, and random Fucks (open thread, remember) dropped every five seconds may not be conducive to gaining readership.
Plus, it generally reserves those words for situations that deserve it, like when Jay gets dropped into the turf yet afuckingain.

I don't get it.
We’re going to get someone for our o-line, but we had so much money to spend, why settle for a minor upgrade? We could have made the o-line a strength. Instead it’s going to be marginally better and our receivers will be marginally better. Meanwhile our D is only getting older…

An organization that was one play away from going to the SuperBowl, then traded away our leading receiver/tight end and signed jizz hands who has caught 13 touchdown passes in 3 years on turf. He led the league last year in dropped passes. But got a draft pick outta the deal though. Hopefully he’ll be better able to catch the ball in cold, windy, Chicago – conditions that seem better suited that catching the ball in a giant living room where conditions are perfect.

Hub on the Score
- Went over RWilliams “attitude problems” (romo issues and yelling matches with martz when with lions)
- Not a bad guy just arrogant and can be annoying to team mates
- Viewed as soft by team mates Not a go up and get it WR Afraid to take the hit and drops balls he should catch
- Will catch 50 or 60 passes net you 700 yards and get 6 or 7 TDs
- Bears got their fourth #3 or # 4 WR on the roster in RWilliams
- If Bears got a 3rd round pick from carolina in olsen trade then GREAT job by Angelo
- Team is committed to martz and his offense mad mike martz offense is back
- Hearing niners making STRONG run at Olin Kreutz since they lost their center
- Olin wants to be and retire a Bear and thinks Olin will stay in the end but wouldnt be surprised if he went to the niners (money closer to home)
- Takes shots at the fans for not wanting Olin Kreutz and talking up RWilliams (“apparently we have TONS of NFL scouts that chose to work in another profession”)
- ohare is banged up and doesnt think he would pass physical
- Bears have no plan if they lose Olin to the niners
- Thinks martz calling shots on all O personnel decisions
- Thinks cowboys are leader for nnamdi

The only reason I’d keep Kreutz is for his leadership and to groom Linnenkohl. Olin’s play has seriously gone downhill over the past few years. There’s a reason he’s ranked 33rd best center. So one’s backup center is better than our starting center.

I think Bears should trade Hester right now
Of course they won’t, but he could probably give them a 1st rounder in return, and I think he’ll be incredibly useless next year. There’s no way he’s better than MSW. MSW for half of 2009 was far better than Hester’s ever been as a receiver.
How can you say
Hester’s gonna be useless and say we could get a 1st rounder for him? Especially with the new return rules?
If its free, take two.
Some GM will pay for him
NFL.com had their top 100 players list this year, ranked by fellow players, and Hester ranked 32nd overall. He’s a huge name.
See tfrabotta's comments below
And, Angelo’d get crucified if he did that, as he should. And 32nd on a poll doesn’t equate to a 1st round pick in a trade automatically. I don’t see anyone doing that, even for Hester.
If its free, take two.
Except he is the greatest returner in the history of this game and gives us a huge advantage
not giving that away.
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
That'd be true
if it weren’t for the rule change. And now with Roy Roy in town, I think Hester’s probably the #4 WR.
Rule change only affects kick returns
He’s pretty great at punt returns too, in case you had forgotten.
Sure he is
But (1) return guys usually have a very short period of dominance, and Hester’s window could end at any time. He’ll be 29 soon. And (2) yeah Hester had three punt return TDs last year, but he also has had three punt return TDs total over the past three seasons. His stock is probably as high as it’ll be.
So
since we made the NFC Championship last year, lets trade our not-so-secret weapon that singlehandedly affects field position on each possession for a future pick which won’t be a 1 (cus no one’s doing that deal)? You crazy.
If its free, take two.
If it's a high 2nd, that's fine
He’s a punt returner and #4 receiver who’s very likely nearing the end of his prime if you look historically at similar players. You could potentially pick up a high draft pick in return for him. That’s a steal.
It’d be one thing if the Bears were one of the favorites for a title, but they’re not. The chances of Hester being the difference between a championship or not is really low, and looking at comparable players historically he probably only has 1 or 2 dominant years left. A 1st or 2nd rounder in return could give the Bears huge longterm benefit.
Again not just a punt returner
the greatest returner this game has ever seen and gives us a huge advantage in field position for probably the next 5 years.
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
Look at historical comparables
That’s just not realistic. 29 for a dominant kick returner is like being 35 for a dominant receiver. I wish there were cases of return men dominating into their 30s, but there’s just not.
It’d be one thing if the Bears were one of the favorites for a title, but they’re not.
So says you. I don’t give a fuck, I’m calling it – BEARS 2011-12 SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!
by NorthSideBearsFan on Jul 29, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions
According to your theory
Hester hadn’t returned a kick or punt for a score in two seasons so he wouldn’t be able to do it again. Then this season happened.
During the two intervening years teams went to ridiculous lengths to avoid letting him catch the ball at all and it cost them dearly in field position.
Also people seem to forget that two years ago he had 750 yards in 12 games. I’d take production from any of our receivers at that rate.
Dante Hall was amazing too
So was Eric Metcalf. So was Brian Mitchell. They weren’t Hester-amazing, but they were big threats.
And then they got to age 28-29ish and then their numbers tailed off dramatically.
I bet you told her the same thing ;)
Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that
by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Jul 29, 2011 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Of course
So Hester could be really good this year and next year, when he’d be 30. Dante Hall crapped out at age 28, Metcalf crapped out after age 29. To expect more than 2 years is hopeful, to expect more than 3 years seems wishful.
So you don't think we
have any chance at competing for a Super Bowl in the next 3 years? Why not trade Forte too?
If its free, take two.
It's about making positive-value trades
What, a 1% chance of winning the Superbowl is preventing you from trading any aging veterans? The Bears have a dozen holes to fill, the Packers look like an elite team for the foreseeable future, and you want to keep a 29 year old punt return specialist because maybe just maybe things everything could go right.
Seriously
Your practically describing how team’s like the TB Rays in baseball used to be built. Keep guys until you either have to pay or they lose trade value, and perpetually rebuild by replacing the next old/good guy with the young potential guy. He’s 29! Not dead. By your logic we should have traded urlacher and briggs before last season since we kept missing the playoffs.
If its free, take two.
I'm not advocating perpetually rebuilding
I think the Patriots, for example, made a mistake trading Seymour when they were title favorites.
But let’s not act like the Bears are in the Patriots position. They’re maybe a top 10 team heading into next year. There’s a very little chance that (1) the Bears win a title in the next few years and (2) need Hester to do it. But if they get a 1st/2nd rounder for him and hit… that could make a big impact.
The problem
is thinking a sixth-year return man with a below-average amount of receiver mileage on him is an “aging veteran.”
And you don’t make “positive-value trades” just to make trades. You trade if it makes sense for the direction the team is going. And trading for draft picks doesn’t fill any holes this year, cause you ain’t getting a package of hole-filling players for Hester.
KR/PR means more to the team that has him than the team that will make a play to get him. It’s a lottery ticket position.
Weekend contributor at Windy City Gridiron
by Steven Schweickert on Jul 29, 2011 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Can you tell me what direction the team is going?
They’ve got an aging defense, and an offense of a bunch of 24 year old projects. I honestly don’t know what the hell the plan is.
The Bears were crazy-healthy last year, they had an easy schedule, and they got to play the Seahawks in the 2nd round to get to the NFC title game. I’m not pretending that that’s an indicator that they’re a title favorite, especially when they haven’t added an impact player yet.
Ah, you're one o' dem guys.
You’re conveniently forgetting that while the offense was 30th in yardage, they still scored points, and doing so while letting Jay be sacked 52 times, getting sub-par backup play, and playing mix-match with the line. You’re forgetting the Bears took out two starting QBs themselves and while they can’t do anything about the third stringers they did face, the defense still did their job and the offense still has to go against the other defense.
Safety’s younger, a new defensive tackle, increased play from Wootton – you don’t get “younger” overnight.
Those same Seahawks curbstomped the New Orleans Saints prior to facing the Bears.
Weekend contributor at Windy City Gridiron
by Steven Schweickert on Jul 29, 2011 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Sure, crazy things happen
The Seahawks curbstomped the Saints. The Chargers had the #1 offense and #1 defense by yardage and missed the playoffs. The Bears made the NFC title game despite having only a couple impressive wins all season.
There’s a lot of luck involved in a 16 game season. I think you’ll agree the Bears had a lot of it last year.
Fine, how much luck before you admit "good"?
You don’t faceplant “luck” into eleven wins.

I would kick the tires on trading him next year
This year, with just about no time for free agents to learn the system and no heir apparent for punt returns, I’m not sure a first round pick would be worth it, assuming a second would perhaps be available for him next year.
The problem with waiting
is other teams will see the effect of the new kick return rule.
You do realize he only returned 12 kicks last year
7 the year before. We’re talking about about one every other game the past two years.
Other teams would trade for him
to be their punt and kick returner, I’d think.
But not to the tune of either a first, a second,
or a Pro-Bowl player.

But you said
yardage KR are a dime a dozen. That’d be a horrible trade- by your logic
If its free, take two.
Right
It’d be a horrible trade for whoever makes it, which is why you dangle Hester now after he just had a huge season, and before the kickoff rule goes into effect.
If you can’t get a 2nd rounder, then fine, keep him. But I imagine some GM would pay that price.
A second for someone who you have spoken about as...
I don’t think many people consider them as integral parts of a championship run the way Bears fans see Hester.
Right but good-yardage returners are dime a dozen
Mitchell had 7 punt return TDs by age 29, and then just 2 from age 30-35. Who cares if Hester can average 12 yards per return, it’s his TD ability that has defenses punting away from him.
you want to keep a 29 year old punt return specialist because maybe just maybe things everything could go right.
There’s a very little chance that (1) the Bears win a title in the next few years and (2) need Hester to do it.
Dante Hall was amazing too
So was Eric Metcalf. So was Brian Mitchell. They weren’t Hester-amazing, but they were big threats.
And then they got to age 28-29ish and then their numbers tailed off dramatically.
So he’s not a big difference maker, his TD ability means a lot but players of his caliber tail off about this time, he can’t make the difference between a good team and a championship contender and even if the Bears were a championship contender, it wouldn’t be because of Hester?
You’re describing a fifth-round offer. Why would you offer a second for a player who in your words will “tail off dramatically”?
I said earlier that KR/PR is a lottery ticket; you get it yourself, it doesn’t provide much benefit for the majority of the time, but once or twice it can rip off 7 points for your team. Given how many games are within seven points, I’d say that’s a difference maker, and moreso than you give him credit for. Special Teams as a whole can win or lose a game, but given how much of the game they play, they aren’t bank-breakers. Hence, lottery ticket.

That's the thing, teams overpay for aging superstars all the time
Look at the contract Santana Moss got, or the contract Edgerrin James got from the Cardinals, or what the Redskins traded to get McNabb, or what the Browns paid Delhomme last year.
I personally wouldn’t give up a 2nd rounder for Hester, but I’d bet some team will.
Also, you're making a big deal about the possible
compensation, when that’s besides the point. If the best offer for Hester is just a 5th rounder, or even a 3rd rounder, then you keep him.
The question is, if a team did offer a high 2nd rounder for him, would you do that? I personally think that’d be a great deal for the Bears.
I am?
I think Bears should trade Hester right now
Of course they won’t, but he could probably give them a 1st rounder in return, and I think he’ll be incredibly useless next year. There’s no way he’s better than MSW. MSW for half of 2009 was far better than Hester’s ever been as a receiver.
Trade him! We can get a first for a declining returner and a “receiver” who will be useless!
Of course if an offer is too good you take it. You have to. But you don’t take just any offer. He’s more valuable as a Bear than what most teams will give up to upgrade their returner position, and contrary to what you believe has been a difference maker in multiple instances over his career. That kind of player isn’t given up for peanuts. I don’t think any team is calling to offer a second, much less a first; they’ll draft their own (Cribbs, Cobb, Logan, etc)
Allow me to rephrase. Why would you trade for that player? Not “I think a team would give up this…” If someone called you up and offered you Hester, what would you be willing to give up today for him.

and how old was Brian Mitchell???
In 2002, Mitchell was one of only two players to be ranked in the top seven in both kickoff returns and punt returns (the other being Michael Lewis of the New Orleans Saints). He was the only player in the NFC to be ranked in the top three in both categories. Mitchell was second in the NFC and third in the NFL with a career-high 27.0-yard average on 43 kickoff returns
In other words..34 years old and not as good as Hester.

????
The Kick/punt returners job is to create field position and put the offense in a position to score. TD’s are a bonus
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
But how hard is it to find a good yardage guy
Stefan Logan, Marc Mariani, Eric Weems all put up aging Brian Mitchell numbers, with good yardage and almost no TDs. I don’t think many people consider them as integral parts of a championship run the way Bears fans see Hester.
But those guys don't last
They have 2-3 year shelf life’s for whatever reason, mainly because teams figure them out. Hester is dynamically explosive still
If its free, take two.
A large part of the reason our offense in the season's second half was better was largely due to Hester's returns
He’s the most uniquely dangerous player on the team and they shouldn’t get rid of him until he can no longer take a punt to the house.
