Late Night Free Agency Chicago Bears open thread

Photo

The Chicago Bears had a busy day.  All their draft picks are now in the fold.  They re-upped with a couple of their own free agents, for eleven overall, and Matt Forte plans on being in training camp.  Reports are that Jerry Angelo assured Forte that a new deal will get done.  After the jump I'll blockquote their moves from chicagobears.com;

Star-divide

Within a short timeframe, the Bears agreed to terms with 11 free agents and all five of their draft picks. The free agents include two of their own defensive starters in tackle Anthony Adams and linebacker Nick Roach.

Those from other teams are receivers Roy Williams (Cowboys) and Sam Hurd (Cowboys), tight end Matt Spaeth (Steelers), punter Adam Podlesh (Jaguars) and defensive end Vernon Gholston (Jets).

The Bears also agreed to terms with fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou, restricted free agent quarterback Caleb Hanie and two exclusive free agents, running back Kahlil Bell and offensive lineman Edwin Williams.

I'm not seeing a new offensive lineman on that list...  All the speculation points to the Bears being active in the secondary free agent market.

Gholston

Gholston can be the biggest signing so far, but Williams will make the most impact.

by Shuggs on Jul 29, 2011 10:20 PM CDT reply actions

I'm confused as to the distinction.

Wouldn’t the “biggest” signing be either the one that will make the most impact or the most expensive one? (Which, IIRC, would be Willliams in both cases.)

Disagree

Being a decoy is not as good as helping out your most valuable defensive players.

Gholston can impact the entire defense. He would help Peppers and that would help the secondary. And Spaeth is actually the biggest.

by Shuggs on Jul 29, 2011 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct

Spaeth is 6’7" 270 pounds.

And Gholston is returning to the system that made him a star in college, coming in as a 3rd down pass rusher could pay off in spades for the Bears.

The Bears pretty much have 4 things to do before rock'n'roll time

1- Resign Olin Kruetz and Corey Graham.
2- Sign a guard, Blalock being the best option right now.
3- Add linebacker depth, which also helps out special teams.
4- Pursue Richard Marshall (Panthers) and maybe add some safety depth?

All have the pedigree and history as performers on teams like the Pats, Colts, Eagles, Saints and Chiefs. Brown is the youngest, while Bell and Light are the most consistent.

Waters has the lowest upside, Andrews the longest drop off and Brown the most inconsistent.

The problem is KR. Knox can’t do it and Manning is gone. Hester could shift their but he isn’t as effective.

Why will Hester not be effective?

In all likelihood he’ll get far fewer snaps at WR this year, so he should be able to focus on returning both kicks and punts.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Jul 30, 2011 2:43 AM CDT up reply actions

He is a talent

but returning kicks is much different for various reasons.

The Kick return, without the wedge is essentially sending your returner to smack into a brick wall. His history shows that, while he is a good returner, he excels more on the Punt return. Blocking and running lanes are different. There is also the new rule that gives Hester less space to operate.

I would rather see a Jerry Azumah/Brian Mitchell type come in to do the KR, a straight line running back type returner that has the leg strength to break tackles and head upfield than a shiftier, finesse returner. If he doesn’t dance, he would be good.

Hester’s heart isn’t into KoR as much as PR.

Hester and Knox are fine, although it's not suggested they always do it

Graham is pretty quick… Perhaps they can use K/PR duties from time to time as an incentive to sign him, and see how he does?

Graham is not going to do it since Toub would prefer him as a blocker.

by Wally&Mac on Jul 30, 2011 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

All things considered, this was a productive first official day for free agency.

The Bears managed to:

-Move on from trying to make Greg Olsen work in the scheme and adequately replaced his production with the Roy Williams signing, plus a first round pick.
-Signed Matt Spaeth, so him and Davis should be an improved blocking tandem.
-Signed all their rookies.
-Signed what appears to be an improvement over Brad Maynard, at least in power.
-Signed an improvement over Rashied Davis.
-Sign Roach and AA, the two defensive players we really needed back.

I would have loved to see Kruetz get re-signed and Justin Blalock brought into the fold, but he’s still out there and Jacob Bell was released so there’s quality out there. Hopefully the O-line will be much improved by this time tomorrow.

Manning was rated

as one of the top safeties in the NFL last year. We also lost Greg Olsen, who was one of our top receiving targets. We also don’t yet have Kreutz.

We are also playing against a lot of teams that got incrementally better, and we didn’t. That makes us relatively worse.

We also aren’t likely to have the same string of health or miraculous schedule like we did last year, which makes us less likely to win as many games.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 30, 2011 7:01 AM CDT up reply actions

We didn't get better?

Paea instead of Harris? Camiri instead of Omiyale? Not using Spaeth instead of not using Olsen? Roy Williams instead of Devin Hester? A punter who actually has a leg?

Yes, we lost Manning, which is regrettable, but then, we did draft two safeties in the last two years. You don’t draft a third rounder for depth. I really like Conte the more I look, and for all of the surprise he was to us, Angelo went personally to eight games to scout him. And Wright was a guy we were all high on when he was drafted.

They resigned AA and Edwin Williams (who i think is the only linemen Chicago had last year with a positive rating and was the only interior line prospect that I thought was worth keeping).

I mean if…..ouch…..wait, wha?….was that a piece of the sky falling? Damn, move over dude and let me in!

Last thoughts of the night for me

1) The 90th roster spot is being held for Kreutz, I can feel it. It’s almost like JA is doing it symbolically like “Hey we’ll get it done”

2) Is it bad that I got like little-kid-at-Christmas excited when I scrolled through the last thread and saw Training Camp press conferences. Finally, fuckin’ FINALLY we have real live football talk about football, not “Lovie Smith at a Bulls game saying he hopes the owners and players get a CBA done before August” but real live “Jay Cutler giving his throughts on the season” and “Lovie saying Jay is in the best shape of his life.”

AAAAAHHH I’m SO excited. Football is here, it’s real, I could almost cry!!! This crazy fun week of offseason has been just the thing I needed to get over the lockout and now with real, actual training camp too?! For a 1st official day its been a rather solid first day

And as stated in my post even if we have 89/90 players only 53 are going to be on the final roster, that out of the 90 whomever we signed 37 will get cut. So if the Bears see someone they want to add in particular a Guard then simply cut someone that is doomed from the beggining and sign your guy!

Its not the end of FA, and there are still a good chunk of available O-Lineman out there for us to sign with our still massive cap space, no one we signed today is commanding a high salary.

As I’m going to compare our signing of Roy Williams to the trade back in 2007 where a disgruntled WR in Randy Moss went to the Pats for a very low price and “kaboom!” he was a star once more.

We didn’t even surrender a draft pick, and Roy Williams is only getting paid for one season. If he returns to stardom in a similar fashion to what Randy Moss did in New England, we have ourselves a hell of a football player for Cutler to bomb it to.

Can't really compare Moss to Williams...

Moss was a true-blue super stud WR who went into a small rut in Oakland. Williams has pretty much been a disappointment since he was picked.

by The Kaiser on Jul 30, 2011 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't see how

his numbers in Detroit were a disappointment, especially since he was the only weapon on that team for the duration. He isn’t Moss, but he had a better past than Marshall did in Denver.

Moss also had Chris Carter, several tight ends, Michael Bennett, and Robert Smith not to mention Randall Cunningham and Culpepper. He had weapons and quarterbacks to help him where Williams didn’t. Which is why he failed in Oakland, Vikings II and Titans.

Who knows what would have happened in Detriot if he had a competent QB and a RB.

bout JA right now. like the gholston move, Im okay with giving Roy williams a shot. I am surprised that Olsen only went for a third rounder, but whatev… maybe a lineman at some point? but its lookin good so far. im getting excited bout being the first team to go 19-0 this year.

From the last few “open threads” and not heard this…. Apparently Carimi is starting at left tackle to open camp.

also…. new punter apparently runs a 4.4…. and has “great hands” according to Toub… uh oh.(Jim Rome style)

Gholston is a huge gamble

My sister who lives in NYC says he sucks terribly. But we will see, I guess the Bears can treat him as an undrafted rookie.

by Gaak on Jul 30, 2011 12:56 AM CDT reply actions

The reason he was terrible

is because he was out of position. At Ohio State, he played a 4-3 DE. The Jets drafted him as a 3-4 OLB. If anybody can get him to produce, it’s Rod Marinelli. And as you stated, this will be a low risk and very high reward kind of situation.

by zoltarian1114 on Jul 30, 2011 1:00 AM CDT reply actions

Honestly, I'm not happy at all right now...

The Bears Number 1 priority - and I mean number 1 BY FAR- coming into free agency was to improve the offensive line.

At this point we have done nothing INCLUDING re-signing Kreutz.

If I had to grade the Bears moves thus far I’d give them a D-.

Resigning Roach, Adams is fine but the complete failure to make even one move on the O Line spells failure to me.

This could change with even just one move but up to now, we haven’t seen it.

by The Kaiser on Jul 30, 2011 1:05 AM CDT reply actions

Don't have to...

but I just did. What’s your point? You are fine with the O line we’re kicking off camp with? Are you fine kicking off the season with that too?

by The Kaiser on Jul 30, 2011 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions

We have plent of time and plenty of options

Kreutz is imperative, but other line spots have lot of options.

Fari enough...

But as it stands now, the grade is very close to fail. You could mark it an incomplete I suppose but no way can we be happy with the lack of progress on the OL

I dont think they’re done shopping. They’ve done a fantastic job of keeping literally everyone in the dark so far on everything else they’ve done.

by firebirdsix7 on Jul 30, 2011 1:16 AM CDT up reply actions

This years 'big splash' will be JA not entirely messing up in FA.

I don’t like JA.. Never have, an ya I’ve been a lil ticked about how he’s handled FA this year, however the more I look into the choices he’s made this year the more an more I like them. I’m not doing cart wheels down the street or anything but I feel he gave the fans what they wanted in a bigger WR while pleasing Martz. The UDFA corps, while mostly just roster bodies, does have a few potential gems. Between draft picks/free agents they strengthened the depth of the team some. And there is still time to acquire a few last min pickups for the O-line

by edenburnz on Jul 30, 2011 1:32 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I will copy and paste another post(which you could have read above) showing available o-line
Brian Waters , Derrick Dockery Evan Mathis Jacob Bell , Jamal Brown , Ryan Harris , Nick Kazur , Matt Light , Jonathan Goodwin , Samson Satele , Max Jean Giles , Chris Spencer , Stacy Andrews , Nick Cole , Vince Manuwai , Doug Legursky or Justin Smiley

Ya, plenty of options left.

Actually there sort of is

NFL pledged to commit 90% of the cap this off-season and a hard floor comes into effect in 20-13.

So there is a floor all teams must reach, but it isn’t league penalty enforced.

OMG! Jerry Angelo SUX!

He’s been doing nothing but sitting on his thumbs! He hasn’t even triedto sign a kinsman, he brings in a washed up never-was of a receiver, trades away Greg Olden for a third round pick he probably will spend on Garrett Wolfe and Michael Okwo’s love child and he hasn’t even tried to get the bears a offensive kinsmen. He also resigned QQ when he’s nothing more than a mediocre tackle who does nothing to help Peppers.

SOMEBODY PLEASE FIRE THIS IDIOT!

Agreed.. remember where the Bears are...

They had low body count drafts the last few years. They also had a low body count FA period last year because they went “BIG”. At some point you need to stockpile players. So maybe the whole value driven FA play this year and the unrestricted rookies is a way for the team to get younger and better at the same time.

No big names isn’t a problem. Marrinelli has guys he likes, Tice has guys he likes (and will most likely get a few more.. Jay Cutler will be much better this year. Real good possibility that our #1 receiver from last year is now our #3. How about that?

Hello Bears Fans

Quick intro and kudos. Bears fan since birth -1961. Live in Washington DC area. Get back to a game per year. Direct TV NFL Ticket Addict.

This FA period had me looking for Chicago Bears Blogs for the first time ever. Normally the news gets to me quick enough on the Sun-Times or the Trib. Looked at 5 or 6. The worst was the one at www.cbssportsline.com (whining and whining about not getting the top 5 WRs.. clearly a fantasy league sort of group). Found this blog and see a good balance of comments by bloggers. (more positive and insightful, than simply “Fire Angelo”).

So thanks.

Thanks for the welcome. The lockout sucked. But I am enjoying the compressed free agency. Can’t wait to see how the roster comes together. Hated to lose Olsen. But it’s a move that makes sense. I hope he does well. He was in a tough spot last year, and he manned up. Played FB, got better at blocking, lots of guys would have complained a lot.

Excited about all of it. New WRs, New DTs, New DEs, New OL. More experienced Cutler .. (he went to the Pro-bowl the only other time he ran the same offense 2 years in a row).
