The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly; my post-game summary
Good way to start off the (pre) season with a win on our home turf. There is a lot to discuss about tonight's victory, and we shall discuss what we truly liked and disliked from the game. Follow me after the jump and let the fun to begin!
First on a more serious note let us all hope Zachery Bowman makes a speedy recovery. Word is it was a head injury albeit I'm not sure how serious it was. Anyone with a good source; feel free to give us an update on the situation.
Now for the nitty gritty. Quite a few positives tonight to balance out the negatives.
The Good: Marion Barber and DTs
Henry Melton and Amobi Okoye looked rather dominant tonight, with Melton showing he can be a 3 down player at 3T and Okoye looking like a beast rushing the passer.
Marion Barber really looked great tonight as a tough nosed RB behind decent run-blocking. He definitely broke through tackles and was a force to be reckoned with. To be quite honest he is the most physical RB I've seen in quite some time. And to top it off he really outplayed Chester Taylor. Speaking of which...
The Bad: Chester Taylor
Did not impress me at all, looked rather bad compared to Marion Barber. Expect Barber to be bumped up the depth chart next week. But he definitely wasn't as bad as the obvious "ugly" for the night
The Ugly: Pass Protection (!!!!)
9 sacks tonight, with 3 surrendered by the 1st team. Thankfully we took Jay Cutler out before he got hurt again. Where the run blocking was adequate, the pass protection was anything but that. Long road ahead for Tice to evaluate. At least we have 3 more games to figure out the situation, with moves possibly in the fold.
Overall, a rather boring but solid debut for the Bears. A win is a win, and there is quite a few things to be optimistic about. Sound off Bears Fans!
**Update**
An honorable mention goes to Chris Spencer as he performed rather well in his debut with the Bears. I think he should be receiving 1st team reps this week, perhaps with Edwin Williams as well with EW playing at RG.

what about the d
other than the ubiquitous drive where the bears d allows even the worst offences score, the d looked good. The dline was penetrating, the linebackers were solid, and the dbs were more active then i have seen in a bears game in a long time actually contesting passes as opposed to just tackling after the catch. I wonder if that is just do to bad bills qbing or if the bears have actually changed what they are coaching and emphasizing, or if it was just a coincidence.
Oh and the 2 of the 3 sacks allowed by the first string oline were coverage sacks.
"snuffalufagus fucks my shit up"
The defense looked great last night
As I mentioned the DTs in particular looked fantastic last night.

the D was fine
they only gave up 3 pts. but, would have liked to see more sacks from the first team but, we weren’t gonna show to much just like with the stunt blitzes that their D kept trying cant believe the would blitz almost every play just shows u how little class this team has… and Shawn merriman cant wait until this guy gets hurt steriods and HGH such a joke.

Im beginning to wonder if Tice is overrated
Is the reason why we didn’t pick up a free agent or drafted a guard is because the Bears brass feels that Tice can somehow work his magic and build a line using his teaching skills with no regard for talent other than Carimi?
There was a reason why teams passed on Louis and Webb until the later rounds in the draft yet the Bears seem totally content with allowing 9 sacks on a preseason game.
I have a feeling this is gonna be a long season- especially for Jay Cutler!
Unfortunately - you may be on to something
I’m all for developing talent, but do we have 2 years to wait for Webb to evolve into a complete NFL left tackle – who can both run block and pass-protect? Left tackle obviously needs to be the best pass-blocker on the team. I wonder if Webb will develop into that complete player for us this year…
And I don’t know about Louis, either. Didn’t we draft him as a tight-end and then convert him to guard? Maybe he’ll settle down as Tice has more time to work with him…
If they're going to going someone a shot I think Levi Horn should get a realistic shot at either RT or RG. He looked good last night. Granted against 2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers but still. Looked a lot better than Louis

I don't think that it's so much that Tice is overrated
as much as it’s that Angelo is stupid enough to think Tice is a miracle worker and can make average o-lineman into mainstays just by being under his wing.

Or Angelo
just thinks he knows best when it comes to player abilities and talent u know due to his awesome draft record and multiple championships….. it would be awesome to get him so real linemen who actually natively played their postion spot u know a LT actually playing LT i know this is u heard of with the bears but come on not that chris williams is great but, we drafted him to play LT but hey were gonna move u to RT wait now LG o wait now we have another guy like corey graham or daniel manning not a big fan of either but let a guy grow into his own within a stable postion.

The only thing the bears have shown from the start of the season til now is
JA, Lovie, Martz, and tice should be on the chopping block! I love my BEARS but the only thing clearly improved this year is our D. That’s bad concidering we had the one of if not the worst offence last year. I wont even comment on the o-line. Barber is a good pickup, but Roy Williams not so much! Jonny (giveup) Knox was our best stat WR, but Hester was our best route runner. So what did JA do, he got another route runner when we need a go get it WR. Low risk low reward! Sims-Walker, Rice, Holmes, Burress, Edwards, andstill availible Randy Moss floor is almost as high as Williams ceiling. JA and Lovie should have picked one apiece and sucked them off like they did Pep last year. Concidering the fact they didn.t do it for a top O-line player. Chris Spencer, that funny cause he came from a shitty o-line! We wont have Urlacher and Briggs much longer, so give them an offence they don’t have to carry every game!
Can't wait to read.... The Bulls take the Heat in 7!
Chill dude, we haven't even seen Roy Williams do anything.
Its the first preseason game, get off the ledge.

unbelievable
seriously ppl we shouldn’t base ur expectation on a preseason game i’m really have u ever watched the preseason i’m sure this has been stated multiple times that we were win-less last year and lions went undefeated in their win-less season lol its a time of evaluation and shuffling of the depth chart.

Let's step back from the ledge..
we went 11-5 last year with those people leading us.
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
o-line sucks
it sounds like our o-line sucks our o-line sucks our o-line sucks our o-line sucks our o-line sucks. say it five times before and after sleeping. and all should be put right in angelo world
as bad as some people
might think we did in that free agency rush (myself included), there is a possibility that we might have built a defensive line rotation that could develop into a dominant force. melton looked good last year and looked pretty damn good last night, adams will be a solid player for a few more years, i think peppers is going to age pretty well, and if we can just get 3 guys out of okoye, wooton, toeina, paea, and gholston to just hit their potential we could have a situation thats similar to what the giants have had over the past few years

Da D
A lot of the defensive plays called for the 2nd and 3rd stringers was so that a lot of guys were in one on one situations to see who can really handle their responsibilities with little to no help. I was semi impressed with Mike Holmes. He’s a decent sized DB who showed a few flashes, granted it waas against the 3rd string guys. But i think the Bears should keep closse eye on this guy especially if Bowman is going to be hurt for any signifacant amount of time.
I for one am finally feeling like our saefty play
could be a strength and has been such a black hole for so long.
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
It was a strength last year
Finally have that position locked down for years to come with Hitman and Wright, possibly Conte down the road.

I don't know about strength last year
I think it was average. Harris had a good year but Manning was still out of position too much. Although I will say he improved over the prior year. I just don’t think he was that sharp and just lacked instincts to make big plays.
We are serving up Carimi Pancakes!!
Chris Spencer looked really good
in pass and run blocking

I think EWilliams should get a shot at 1st team LG
and i think it’s just a matter of Spencer learning the offense. Once he gets acquainted with it he will be starting..his contract is too large for him not to be

I thought C Williams looked decent at LG

I'd have Garza and E Williams compete for RG
Garza isn’t invincible, and didn’t look good the other night. He would be a valuable backup to both Center and Guard.

Yeah he was playing at a position he's not familiar with. He's solid yet unspectacular at RG and the real issue is Louis at RG and 1 OK performance by C. Williams at LG who is on a shorter leash than Garza so Williams would best be suited at LG

i think Garza gets handed the RG spot until someone proves
in game time situations that they are better than him.

Preseason isnt any indication of how good a team is
Only how good or bad they be. I thought the first string offensive line has the potential to either be totally awful or just servicable enough to win with, which my guess being the latter. The Bears to me are like an enigma, they don’t have a lot of superstars on that team, yet they play fundamentally sound defense and special teams is just outstanding.
The offense will probably still be smoke and mirrors with running the ball off of screens, misdirections, and draw plays. Look for Martz to try to air it out if the run game does stall or if the o-line actually keeps Cutler off of the ground.
I’m still counting the Bears into the division contention talks despite some of the major issues with the o-line and not ensuring help for Cutler with a true #1 receiver who has proven to be a consistent threat. The Bears are coached very well, play true to their scheme, and don’t take many chances. Its worked for them in the past so I don’t expect anything less.

O-Line and other things
O-Line: I was impressed with C. Williams (surprising), E. Williams, Carimi and Spencer last night. I was scared of Webb, which is where I left off last season…but of those 9 sacks we gave up, only 3 of them were the sub-2.5/3 second kind at 1st&2nd look (not that I stopwatch timed it, but I did rewind and re-watch the sacks a couple times). Hanie and Enderle both seemed to be holding onto the ball a bit more than they should have. Now, we didn’t have great pockets, but it didn’t look like the kind of free run at the QB we often saw last year. I personally thought the run blocking was stellar. It wasn’t perfect every play, but we opened some huge holes against Buffalo’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team defenses for Barber and Bell.
D-Line: I noticed that nobody talked about Gholston much Sat/Sun (before I had seen the game late Sun. night on DVR). His first step was disappointing, maybe a result of not playing edge rusher the last few years, but he had good push, got a couple pressures, tipped a pass, assisted Hurd with that ST strip (negated by penalty on Hurd). I liked his game in the “backup DE” kind of way. If Wootton won’t be 100% by week 1 we could be very thin and tired at DE again this year (last year Pep and Izzy just took too many snaps IMO). I don’t think it would be unreasonable to re-approach NYG about Osi and just lock the whole D-Line up. Okoye made some plays but Melton was slicing through and redirecting, he is going to be the starter. Paea and Toe looked good too.
The DBs: played a lot of 1vs.1, which I bet was done on purpose to evaluate their coverage skills, and I saw some say Buffalo had a lot of dropped passes…But I saw a lot of Bears DBs getting hands on balls and laying big hits on receivers. Jennings, Bowman, and Josh Moore showed up some on game day, Wright was EVERYWHERE, and Harris showed his typical power.
"just as Gary Fencik will go down as the last person to catch a Joe Namath pass, Wootton will be remembered in NFL history as the last player to sack Brett Favre." - John "Moon" Mullin
quick note
Webb took a beating, and all the articles mention his “sack allowed” and his “holding penalty”…but not all mention they were on the exact same play, and anyone can have a bad play, so let’s make sure we remember it was 1 play and not two separate failures. I didn’t like it, but fair is fair.
