Late Developments: Interest in Tatupu, Kreutz Not Done, and Tommie's a Colt (Open Thread)

News just keeps breaking around here. Per Jeff Dickerson, there's mutual interest between the Bears and recently released Seahawks LB Lofa TatupuJohn Clayton reports that Olin Kreutz isn't ready to retire just yet. And multiple sources, of which I'll link Sean Jensen, report that Tommie Harris has signed a one-year deal with the Colts.

With that, this is your open thread for the night. As always, open-thread responsibly.

But please remember that Tommie Harris knee injury rendered him useless.

Please please please give me the Lofa

As an outside Linebacker. That would be nice to make up for the lack of a new offensive lineman (though, isn’t Jared Gaither still available? Why is no one going for him?)

So if Tatupu lands in Chicago

Would he compete with Roach for the starting job at Sam?

I definitely don’t think he is coming in to be a back-up

Lofa played in the middle for the Hawks , but seems like he could play SAM backer . One issue ...

… is his production has dipped after some injuries . Also anybody think Olin comes back to us if nobody else makes a play for him ?

Doubt it

They can’t expect Spencer to move back to guard after five years. Can they?

Not sure if Lofa fits at SAM, but anything is possible I suppose. It would be great if he competes at that spot, but would provide valuable depth as a backup.

Just found this little ditty .....

….. This from Martz on Spencer …..

We’re not going to anoint anyone a starter over any of our guys," Martz said. "He may not make it, I don’t know. He’s got to come in and compete at that position. But he’s a veteran that’s played very well. He’s a good player. If he’s not better than what we have, then he won’t be the starter.

So maybe its not so far fetched that Olin could come back after all .

So… he’s going to swallow his pride and come back to the Bears a few days after they hurt his feelings with the deadline after refusing to go to 4.5Mil? The implication is that the offer was withdrawn, so a return seems unlikely (barring the Bears finding that none of the candidates can do anything at center and a subsequent “injury crisis” clears the way for Kreutz to be lured out of retirement).

If Spencer doesn't start

it’ll be because they really like Lance Louis and will be starting Garza at center. That or Edwin Williams stepping up at Center and Garza going back to guard.

Still doesn’t leave any room for Kreutz

No

The Bears just signed Chris Spencer and he will compete with Garza for the starting job at Center.

Spencer can play guard . And personaly like I said below we need competition ...

… at just about every position . While I’m fairly sure Olin won’t come back we really need more competition along the O-line .

I wanna see Jacob Bell brought in for competition at guard

by all accounts he is a solid player, and pretty decent in pass protection. Plus he’s only 30, which if he could take Garzas starting spot would make him the oldest member of the line

by IndyBearsFan88 on Aug 2, 2011 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think he'll be competing with Garza....

Especially considering that before he was signed they were saying that E Williams would take first string snaps if he were there, not to mention the UDFA (forgot his name). Honestly, Garza is far to important to the running game at right guard. Moving him to center would hurt.

I'm not either....but...

you don’t promise a guy a starting spot to lure him back and then snatch it away. That isn’t good business and don’t think it would go unnoticed to other potential free agents now and in the future.

That’s why players shouldn’t be told they are going to start unless they are a sure bet to win the spot. The franchise shouldn’t have held out that carrot if they were just going to pull it away after they got what they wanted.

Lofa’s is in his prime

Jeff Dickerson disagrees:

…he struggled with injuries the past few seasons and has seen a decline in production. He missed most of 2009 after tearing a pectoral muscle. Last season he played in all 16 games, but his 88 tackles were the lowest of his career in a full season, and he needed surgery on both knees in the offseason. Tatupu’s prime was his first few seasons when he recorded more than 100 tackles and went to the Pro Bowl each year between 2005-07.

Exactly, and if you start reneging on promises you made to get....

players to sign contracts, your going to find fewer players who are willing to sign with you.

I generally agree that players should compete for spots, but in this case, a promise was made to get Roach to sign. Pulling away that carrot has nothing to do with loyalty. It has everything to do with good business as well as honoring one’s word. If the Bears organization is throwing that away, they had better be ready for the consequences.

Past his prime – maybe
Injury Prone – so what if he’s only getting back up money + playing time
Experience – TONS

Our line backing Corps is one injury away from mediocre. We have 3 Solid Guys – 2 Probowlers, if one of them is hurt production drops off substantially.

Urlacher is what 46? How many more years of Studliness does he have left? Bringing in another experiences MLB who can actually play all 3 positions makes sense if the money is right. Clear a roster spot for Lofa.

Quite. I’ve torn a muscle in each of my shoulders playing rugby. Each time it healed up. Tore a hamstring a few years ago and, because it gets a lot more use and is under a lot more pressure, have re-torn it 4 times since and now walk with a limp. After nearly 24 years of rugby and then martial arts, my days of active pursuits are almost certainly over because even trying to go running is too much of a risk. I can still do stuff with my arms.

Knees aren’t wrists.

Just Dave (on possible new OL signings): JaMarcus Russell. He's been standing in front of better quarterbacks his entire career.

F that... you gotta sign him to a new deal.

yea JA might be everything...

but passing on a good DE he is NOT. Actually passing on any DE he is NOT

I say no

I like our D-line a lot. We have a lot of talented young guys that could very well turn out to be high-impact players. Let’s see what we have there first. Also, our team is rather old, mainly because we traded away our 1st and 2nd round picks from 2009 and 2010. I think we should be very hesitant to trade away anymore draft picks.

Pat Riley is the devil.

I agree

Please, no more defensive linemen- we need a Cb and an OL or two.

With needing a veteran CB

I don’t see how we can pass up on Asante Samuel, yea maybe his best years might have been left in New England, but he still tied for 2nd in interceptions last year… give him a shot, wouldn’t mind seeing him opposite Peanut in the navy and orange!!!

Also, since Aromashadu left and Hester cut his off… I think we might have the lowest number of players with dreads in the league.. We already got Barber, so Asante, lets sign him… what the hell!!!

Terrible, terrible tackling corner – one of our X & O guys can probably pull up the website which rates him as the worst tackler by quite some way of all DBs in the past 3 seasons. He jumps routes well I believe, but our scheme needs guys who can tackle.

Ask and you shall receive....

Sameuls ranks 96th against the run of 100 CBs who played at least 25% of snaps for their team last year. He ranks 8th in that same group in coverage.

Quarterbacks have a absolutely horrible 31.7 rating when throwing his way, and the percentage of targets thrown his way that were completed was 7th best in the league (46.3%) and he also allowed only 7.4 yards per reception against him, also a league best……..but…..

He missed 10 tackles, which is the tenth most in the league among corners. Note that he missed 10 tackles and only made 24 solo tackles and 26 total., which is the worst tackles to miss ratio of any of the 100 corners listed.

Thanks T-Train. Can’t throw at him, can run at him… which, if I understand the cover-2 (thanks to Wilt’s fine posts on it), would be a major weakness in a 1-gap scheme.

Off topic

But from everything I’ve seen an read floating around the mighty interwebs it’s quickly looking like Chris Conte is gonna be a stud! Between his own reps he’s been lining up behind the 1st an 3rd teams an mimicking plays 15yards back.. Kids got heart if nothing else.

IMHO Conte will be the hidden gem of the entire draft. Thought that once I started watching videos/hearing reports about him following the draft an I’m pretty excited about what he’s done in camp so far. Thoughts?

Heard yesterday on ESPN 1000

Dickerson saying they Bears will probably sign another OL, probably at the end of the week. Apparently C. Williams is sucking it up big time at LG.

Is Blalock still available?

And how much difference would having a good left guard make if Webb doesn’t cut it at left tackle?

Stacy Andrews? Brian Waters? Any former Jag O-Lineman?

In my opinion, the best guards still available are:

Nick Cole – PHI (The best of the rest now)
Leonard Davis – DAL (old, but better than what we have now..)
MIke Gibson – SEA (not a probowler, but can be solid – Young enough to learn a few tricks)
Quinn Ojinnaka – NE (NE hava a good Oline, and I was affraid of his pic on nfl.com..)
Reggie Wells – PHI (Started allgames in 2009 for the Cardinals. They had a heel of a OL that year.)
