Well Mr. Knox if you start to protect your QB, run better routes, finish those routes & get better at blocking, you may just get that starting spot back. Honestly I think when the season starts Roy will show up big.

Barber looks better & plays better than Chester and I think Chester will be a goner when the season starts .

He had 12 sacks his rookie season. Twice as many as Brown that year. How did he not earn it????

Doubt anything changes 'til the real games start

Roy looks to be coasting, just making sure he doesn’t get injured. Now, if this is what he does when the real games start, no doubt Knox should pass him. But…also, even though it looks like he’s just coasting, there is a ridiculous sample size issue. How many balls has he had thrown to him in 2 games? Is that more or less than we think he might get thrown his way in the opening quarter of Game 1? I think less

He also had the third-lowest catch percentage in the league over the last three seasons. Williams caught 48.1 percent of the passes thrown to him (111 of 231), which put him ahead of only Braylon Edwards (46.6) and Bryant Johnson (47.3).

My fault, I wasn't being clear...

I only was trying to point out that there are negative stats you can find on anyone and it’s not like Roy Williams has been this unbelievable “go to” guy.

I feel like too many fans make these statements about Knox screwing up routes or Williams being in exactly the right place when there is no way any of us can know that. We don’t see coaches films or know the actual plays or adjustments they’re supposed to make. That doesn’t mean that Knox hasn’t made some mistakes or Williams isn’t ever in the right place but I just don’t see how any of can make these definitive statements. Regarding Knox and running the wrong routes all the time, how many of those happened because Jay made the wrong read and didn’t adjust when he should have? I know I’ll hear that I’m a “Jay Hater” for saying he could make a mistake but the reality is that probably happened a few times last season as well.

Bottom line is, Jay and Johnny were both learning a new system last year and, in my opinion, they both performed pretty well under those circumstances but need more time together to develop and I’d hate to see someone with Knox’ potential be pushed aside for a guy who hasn’t performed as well in the last couple of years.

by BearFan611 on Aug 24, 2011 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I think

that they did well last year considering. But I also feel that Knox lacked some basic things that receivers should do, regardless of what play is called or what system they’re running in. He bulked up, may have improved route running, but maybe didn’t excel in getting a better grasp of the playbook. Also, a receiver has to have the ability to recognize when they have to change from a receiver to a defender to keep the defense from getting a turnover.

With Jay throwing to a spot, and the receiver not being there when the ball appears, you tend to believe that someone got the play wrong. When it happens over and over and over with Knox more than any of the other players, you tend to place the blame on Knox and not Cutty6.

Now, trust me, I recognize that catching the ball is something that should be a skill that receivers should posses, but I feel like with this offense, the first priority is being where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there. Only then can you attempt to catch the ball. Jay has to trust that, when he releases that ball before the WR makes a cut, that he’s actually going to make that cut and wind up where Jay threw the ball.

Checking out my sprunjer?

by Chicago Faithful on Aug 24, 2011 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with anything you've said other than

I don’t think we can really know how many times Knox made mistakes. Last year Darryl Drake was pretty upset later in the season saying the WR’s were not in the wrong place as many people accused them of and Cutler never seemed to blame Knox for that. Not that he would have openly called him out but usually that kind of thing comes out during the course of a season.

Again, I’m not trying to say he was never in the wrong place or ran the wrong route but I don’t ever remember his attitude or effort being a question. One thing Chicago fans will not tolerate is lack of effort or making excuses, something that Williams seems to be displaying thus far, hopefully for all our sakes, that will change.

by BearFan611 on Aug 24, 2011 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

nope

Knox posted an amazing 50.1% reception percentage, a stunning 2% higher reception % than Williams, while leading the league in ints by target….So pick your poison, 2% more receptions and 11 more interceptions on the season, or 2% less catches and a few more drops.

I get the Williams anger, I don’t get the Knox love fest. I guess Chicago fans are still that starved for a good receiver they will dress up anything.

I get what you're saying and I was joking around.

I will admit I’ve never been a Roy Williams fan from the time he came into the league but in reality, I just want the best players on the field and if that truly is Williams, so be it.

I just think Knox has more potential, even though he does need to improve in areas, and I just don’t understand how you don’t let them actually compete rather than annoint either of them the starter if you really want the best guy out there.

Here’s a question, and I don’t know that there is a right/wrong answer, but curious about what your opinion would be. Going into this past off-season, if you went to the other 30 teams (leaving out the Bears and Cowboys) and said you could trade a 3rd round pick for either Johnny Knox or Roy Williams, which one would you take? Who do you think the choice would be? Also, to make it fair, Knox wouldn’t be able to return kicks.

My guess is it would be Knox by a landslide, but that’s just my opinion.

by BearFan611 on Aug 24, 2011 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

If Knox couldn't return kicks it would be Williams

He’s the better WR. Now if kick returns were involved Knox would be the guy, but without kick returns it’d be Williams.

The stats that i can’t get over is that Knox lead the league in INTs per-target last year. I would rather have a guy who drops a pass every 46% of the time as opposed to a guy who can’t beat out man coverage and who gets owned on slant routes.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders

It's all about THE []_[] baby!!!

by suckmyditka on Aug 24, 2011 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really know how that number is compiled but does it take into account

throws into coverage, under throws or overthrows? Not every interception thrown his, or any receiver’s, way is all their fault. It also stands to reason that those receivers who get more targets could have a higher percentage as well. I would think that if he couldn’t beat man coverage or run slants, the QB wouldn’t keep going to him for an entire season.

Again, I don’t know all the ins and outs of this stat but it’s not something I would be overly concerned with. For me a higher “drop” percentage is more telling because it does reflect that receiver’s individual ability more, in my opinion.

yeah I can see how two passes in a preseason game can totally seal someones fate

Roy was far from my first choice for a F/A WR signing but he has proven that he can get the job done. Knox has proven that he can make a big play every so often but Cutler can’t count on him when he needs to convert a 3rd down. I truely hope to see Knox grow as a receiver but until he does we need someone to get the job done. Since Angelo likes to shop from the bargain bin Roy is about the best we can hope for. Slight flaw in your argument there: that’s still more than Williams has shown so far, and was Cutler able to count on Williams when he needed to convert a 3rd down?

Yes, only a couple of passes thrown his way so far, but coasting when you’re on a 1-year deal to impress with a new team to revive your career + turning up too out of shape to run in the offensive scheme you’ve been brought in to be a star in (not a problem we’ve heard about for the other receivers)… well, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, I can only hope it’s miraculously going to transform into a go-to receiver after 4 seasons of underachievement. I’ll take no pleasure if he doesn’t.

cute, but it doesn't change the fact that Knox has never been a go to guy and Williams has.

how is being right where you are suppose to be when those 3 passes were thrown your way coasting? Knox nearly had a 1000 yard season in only his second season after being drafted in the fifth round. Knox comes into camp in great shape, williams doesn’t. What’s the argument for R. Williams again?

If you don't see the Roy Williams train coming then you aren't paying attention.

It was never a competition to begin with. It’s not about being Pre-season, it’s not about Knox all of a sudden becoming Rex Grossman, it’s about an out of shape veteran coming into camp and being given a job when it’s obvious as hell that he isn’t the 4th best WR on the squad.

This needs to get nipped in the bud before the season starts because it’s nothing but another Mike Martz roster power play where “his” guy gets superstar treatment at the expense of another player. Knox gained 10 pounds of muscle and has bust his ass over the offseason, and to not be able to compete for the starting job to that goof is ridiculous. If Williams doesn’t do better in against the Titans than he should be demoted.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Aug 24, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with Dils on this point and in response to your theory that it was to motivate Knox

wouldn’t it have made more sense to actually make it a competition and tell Knox that you don’t have the starting job automatically but may the best man win? Also, with Williams performance the last 3 years, wouldn’t that true competition have been a way to motivate him as well?

That’s where I have the problem with this whole situation, if you really want the best person to have the job then don’t annoint anybody and give them equal time during practice and the games to see who comes out on top.

I really don’t care who wins the position as long as it’s the most deserving candidate.

I think he’s the 4th best WR on this team (and I’m counting #23) What about Earl Bennett?? I think people forget about him sometimes, he makes catches on 3rd down and blocks as well as any WR I’ve seen. Roy Williams has been all talk except for 1 year in his career. If I were Knox I'd be pissed to the point of demanding a trade.

Last 2 seasons for Knox: 96 catches, 1487 yards, 10 TD’s.
Last 2 seasons for Williams: 75 catches, 1126 yards, 12 TD’s.

Knox did that in his first two seasons, Roy did that in what should be his “prime.” Furthermore, Knox did that for the Bears and established himself as the best WR on the team. Williams was brought in on a one year deal hoping he’d regain some of his old Martz magic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Adam Archuletta 2.0. An old, coach’s favorite brought in hoping the system brings out the best in him. Same shit different day. Like Troy Aikman said last year(or the year before), the Bears insult the WR position by continuously conducting experiments at the position and not placing enough value on getting a real playmaker at that position.

by dakoose on Aug 24, 2011 4:50 PM CDT reply actions

Uhm you just proved MY point

Williams stats 75 catches, 1126 yards, 12 TD’s.

That;’s as the THIRD string WR!

If he can do that as a third string, he can do better as a first.

Knox barely had better stats, with less TDs than Williams and he was first string last year.

Dude...

Knox was a 5th round pick and in his second year put up numbers comparable to Desean Jackson. Roy Williams is a former first round pick and do have any idea what Dallas gave up to get Roy Williams? That guy hasn’t been productive since Bush was in office and the only reason he was the third option is because he lost his spot to an undrafted FA by the name of Miles Austin that wanted more than him.

Williams is an underachieving Diva and for him to be given that spot was a controversy waiting to happen. He hasn’t earned anything and if his name was Roy Johnson, he’d be in danger of getting cut.

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 24, 2011 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't hate Knox

Simply pointing out that Jackson beats Knox in all statistics you can throw out. You can’t compare Jackson to Knox. At all.

My beef with Knox has nothing to do with Knox at all. I like Knox, he’s fast, very fast, that’s about all he is. No my beef with Knox is not Knox at all, but the Chicago fans who at the end of last year were clamoring about how Knox “needed to step it up” and whatnot and how he didn’t preform up to par, but yet this year they are talking about how he should be handed the #1 spot over a guy who has produced more than Knox over the past 2 seasons (yes Williams has you can’t deny it). Williams was brought in to be the #1 WR therefor it’s his job to lose.
Are you saying that had we brought in Vincent Jackson, Syndey Rice, Brandon Marshall, or even OchoCinco, that they wouldn’t be handed the starting job, that they would have to “beat out Knox” for the #1 spot? That’s ludicrous. They would be brought in to play the #1 spot in the offense and would have every chance to be the #1 until they were clearly beaten out by someone else.

Knox is not better than Williams.

If anything the battle should be between Bennet and Williams.

It’s not low risk, because this team’s window at a super bowl is not wide open with the defense aging. Hoping that this guy can help carry the offense and not going after a bonafide stud WR may possibly derail this team.

He’s preformed every year in the pros so far.

I believe fully

his hype is totally deserved. He’s good. Period.. i know it’s hard for us Chicagoans to believe hype by a player of another team, but for real, this dude is legit. I believe him to be the 4th best receiver in the NFl (behind Fitz, Megatron, Andre Johnson ).

Well then

Good for your opinion…clap, clap, clap :) Although I would have Roddy White over him and B Marsh over him. (I personally like my all rounder types with size and speed than the pure speed type…but it’s my opinion).

Yes Roddy White is really good.

But idk. That whole offense is really good. Lol

Last 2 seasons weren't fair for Williams

When Tony Romo happened to be BFFs with Witten as well as being on a team who loves to run the football, you’re not going to get as many looks as he would have in a pass heavy offense like ours. And the coaching staff…not the best there is.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 24, 2011 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You all are wrong, wrong,wrong

Williams is the best WR on this team. He runs the cleanest routes and can beat press coverage better than anyone else.

Bennet is the second best WR on this team with Hester a close third. Knox is the 4th best Wr on this team because he doesn’t posses any skills other than the 9 route and the fade. Yeah he’s fast, but he also drops passes and he cannot beat press coverage or run a friggin simple slant route. Period.

Agreed

Lets also look at some more stats shall we? In 28 starts under Martz as a Lion, Roy Williams with a little over 130-140 recs had over 2,148 yards and 12 TDs. Let’s think about those numbersfor a minute. He didn’t even start all 16 games in 2007 due to injuries, yet he was just a little over 100 yards shy of tying Knox’s production with yards, and matched his TD total with 5. Johnny Knox is coming off his best year, which didn’t touch 1,000 yards. Roy Williams at his best = ALL-PRO, with 83 recs 1,310 yards and 7 TDs.

What separates these two further are the facts Roy Williams not only knows where he is supposed to be, but he also doesn’t cost his QB ints like Knox did last season. If Johnny Knox did what he was supposed to do, then we wouldn’t have brought in anyone to begin with. Knox has dug himself into this hole, where he is competing against someone more familiar as well as productive in the Martzfense.

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Aug 24, 2011 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Knox is in his third season and has gotten better each year.

You want to compare this to Roy in his prime? Lets look at what both have done recently. I’d say they’re about even. Yes Roy was the 3rd last year but in an offense than passed first ran second. Does Johnny have some areas to improve upon? Of course. Is he showing improvement? I think so. I think Knox is developing into a fine wide receiver. Anointing Roy the “Best” because of past accomplishments sounds a little grandiose and more than a tad desperate. But what do I know, I’m one of the wrong.

Above all; keep 'em guessing, never let them lose their sense of confusion.

by Just Dave on Aug 24, 2011 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey I can be wrong too for drinking the kool-aid on Roy

He can simply stay in the form he is in now and piss us all off. I was just pointing out to when Williams was in the same style of offense as Knox is in now, rather than compare two different players from two different offenses.

I see...

Well I’m on the fence then; he has the resume and the potential, and while its only preseason, he has yet to show the once pro-bowl WR can return to his former greatness.

Bottom line…at least we didn’t give him some monster contract….

Jay Cutler is our QB, and I for one am proud of that

Oh and...
If Johnny Knox did what he was supposed to do, then we wouldn’t have brought in anyone to begin with. Knox has dug himself into this hole, where he is competing against someone more familiar as well as productive in the Martzfense.

We brought in a number 3 to compete with a bunch of 2’s. Roy will fit in, but I doubt he shines. Knox’s arrow is pointing up, Roy’s has been declining for a while.

Said #3 used to be a #1

Its a tricky issue. And its not like Roy Williams is 33+ years old, rather he is 29 so he still has some time left to return to glory.

He signed his big contract and then apparently decided that was enough.

His "performance" could be seen that way

Or it could be simply becuase he didn’t fit into what Dallas was trying to do with him. This is the year where if he wants to be legit once again, he has to show it this year.

I for one would have taken Braylon over Roy

They are both pretty similar aside that Braylon is younger (and imo a better option) and only had 1 drop last year for that one year contract (He’s dumb) But played better than Roy(and NO I DONT care about what he did in Detroit) cause that’s years ago and before the (blah blah Martz guy blah blah) I only care about recently, and i know this. if he does suck this year (which I think that we would be average to a bit above average and not suck) but if he does then I will be incredibly pissed. But im gonna wait until the reg (minimum 5 games) season to reserve judgement…
